All too easy to get stuck in the mud, using your default search option. Been trying out different ones for a while now and https://duckduckgo.com has won out for me.
The FF Addon is clean & simple to use too
> https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/duckduckgo-for-firefox/
They just work. Simples.
[Edit: And no tracking neither... and anonymous saving to the cloud of settings. Nice touches]

Cracked Glass
Enterprise Products DEMAND Enterprise Security.
Think about it, running enterprise systems/hardware/software on open source software (android, linux, etc) is all well and good.
... tweek it by all means.
... shore up the flaws (its opensource so hackers can easily weed these flaws out)
Heck, a huge percentage of the world's web servers have Apache servers somewhere in the mix.
But for cryin out loud, lock down the security as a priority if you expect people to pay big bucks.

Whats the point in fines for illegal data collection when the sums involved are so paltry in comparison to the profits made?
Quote: “As long as violations of data protection law are penalized with such insignificant sums, the ability of existing laws to protect personal privacy in the digital world, with its high potential for abuse, is barely possible,”

There can be no friendship where there is cruelty, where there is disloyalty, where there is injustice.
And in places where the wicked gather there is conspiracy only, not companionship:
these have no affection for one another;
fear alone holds them together;
they are not friends,
they are merely accomplices.
The Politics of Obedience: The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude – Étienne de La Boétie
To learn more of Étienne, a little known writer of the 1550's, I wrote the following piece about him in bygone days.

Interesting relaxed interview with Mr Schmidt
One snippet jumped out when I read it...
__
"There's a lot of discussion in the world about the two billion that are connected," he says. "We spend all day talking about the issues of e-commerce and start-ups and globalisation and so forth, and we forget that the majority of people are not online and that they will come online, the majority of them in the next five years.
"It's going to happen very fast. It's going to happen in countries which don't have the same principles that we in America have from the British legal system – around law and privacy and those sorts of things. All sorts of crazy stuff is going to happen. Human societies can't change that fast without both good and negative implications."

That last line was just a bit disconcerting. The idea th... more »

This is a really good primer on Lean Startups, from HBR.
But heads up, its the cover story (May 2013 ed.) so only online for a month.
Lengthy, but worth a read. Also, gives a nod of the hat to one of my top 5 favourite books - Business Model Generation.

ROBERT GREENE & 50 CENT - The 50th Law
Bought this book in an airport years back as something to read while on the road. Turned out being a real game changer for me. Robert Greene was already impressive (48 Laws of Power, 33 Strategies of War, Art of Seduction) but teaming up with +50 Cent was an epiphany.
And if you've came this far, then maybe you'll go a bit further and pick up a copy of the book.... Will teach you to Fear Nothing

My Open Letter to Inventor of Iran's New Time Machine
Dear Dr. Ali,
I represent a group of investors from the present who are excited to invest in your future machine. Though we realize that you already know what we are willing to pay. If acquisition is not possible, we'd like to partner 50-50 on all profits, which we will bankroll.
So we know your technology works, please tell us who will win tonight's baseball games and this season's +So You Think You Can Dance.
We are also interested in going back in time, as well as forward. One of our investors, a brilliant dwarf scientist, is eager to help. He will live inside your machine until it can travel back in time so he can post dinosaur photos on Instagram.
Here are some of your other inventions we'd like to discuss: the hoverbaby, edible self-healing limbs, and the P-Diddy exo-s... more »

Inaccurate nomenclature, stop the madness!
Desktop. What a poor descriptor. Technically a desktop computer would be one that you'd place on the top of your desk, but not all form factors consume such tiny amounts of space. To throw another wrench in an otherwise lack luster description most identify a desktop as where their shortcuts reside, which has absolutely nothing to do with hardware. Maybe I should have said PC? That too is an over generalized and somewhat inaccurate description. PC actually stands for personal computer and isn't constrained to any one single form factor. A PC can be a notebook, a tablet, a smartphone, or even a pair of smart glasses. Additionally PC is a deplorable descriptor to differentiate operating platforms such as Windows or Mac because inherently both are personal computing devices. It's funny because we also used to refer to these things as IBM... more »

Jaron Lanier's been thinking along these lines for a while. An earlier book of his – You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto – argued that the internet was eroding human interaction, stifling creativity and changing us as people. Lanier was particularly scathing about remix culture, which he viewed as not only ethically dubious but also self-defeating in the long run. If we have a world in which original artists cannot earn a living from their work, ultimately we will run out of stuff to remix.

Bring Back the Mom & Pop Shop
On my trips to the UK & US I find myself reminiscing of my earliest trips abroad. Especially discovering little Mom & Pop shops - cafes, family run petrol/gas stations, hardware stores, bookshops, diners, B&B's, etc.
Just seems the more I travel the more beige everything becomes.
NY is London is Dublin is LA.
The bland chain hotel, the evergreen chain coffee shop, the lurid chain gas station.
Thing is, when a big chain stumbles then thousands of employees experience the ripples of austerity.
Whereas, an archipelago of Mom & Pop are resilient.
Moreover, our archipelago of Mom & Pops help distribute the profits across a community.... f**k it, these people ARE our community.
You buy into the chain then you line the shareholders pockets.
