PAGELESS | Branding The Bookstore of the Future

I came across this idea from an MBA student who worked out the details of a "pageless" bookstore of the future as a final project for a business Branding class. I was (and am) mortified entirely by this idea; it is anathema to book collectors and a rare bookseller like myself. I'll allow that I can envision stores opening exactly as is shown here, but I don't have to buy into this. See what you think.

Sometimes You Have To Be A Vader

Er - maybe not literally, unless you have your own Empire to run, but in terms of love, and life - work, and play - when we stand out, we're noticed. I'm not talking about wildly flailing your arms around in the middle of a busy highway or anything. But I am talking abut nuances and degrees of getting seen. I'm thinking along marketing and promotional lines.

If you have a start-up, or a new product - or maybe you're a struggling artist or writer - whatever your field - sometimes we all need to push just a little bit more than we normally would.

Sometimes - we need a presence not unlike Darth Vader. He stands out in a crowd. He gets noticed.

Anatomical Pinball Machine

Canadian artist Howie Tsui redesigned a pinball machine to turn it into a crude simulation of a musket-ball rattling around a soldier's guts for a War of 1812-themed exhibition currently running at the Agnes Etherington Arts Centre at Queens University in Kingston. It's meant to demonstrate the way that repetition and concentration can inure you to the horrors of war:

The first part of his exhibition is a re-themed pinball machine, which now, having been Tsui-ed, is called Musketball! Tsui repainted the front glass panel and it now shows a British soldier reeling back as his guts explode from a musket shot (no rolling around inside for this one). The playing surface is painted with organs, tissue and bone, with the words “mangled viscera” at midfield. King of All Motorcycles: Red Baron Bike is Powered by an Airplane Engine

Now this is one roarin’ motorcycle!

The Red Baron is a souped up bike that had its engine pulled out and replaced with a Rotec Radial R3600, which is a 150-horsepower, nine-cylinder engine. This type of engine was most commonly used as a replacement engine during the World War I-era airplanes. The bike is Frank Ohle’s baby, who spent 18 months turning it from concept into reality.

The Tenth Doctor

"The pieces are all made from scratch! 32 pieces is quite a lot, I tell you... I like some pieces more than others, but I guess that's unavoidable. I wish you could all see this in real life though, it's much better than the photos. For instance, the Doctor's hair came out wonderfully, but can hardly be seen here.

Size: the board is 31x31 cm (exactly 1 foot square). The tallest pieces are the kings, they are almost 7 cm tall (2.75 inch). The Daleks are the smallest, they are about 3 cm high (1.2 inch). All pieces are made out of polymer clay.

The Ghost Army

Shortly after the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944, two Frenchmen on bicycles managed to cross the perimeter of the United States Army’s 23rd Headquarters Special Troops and what they saw astounded them. Four American soldiers had picked up a 40-ton Sherman tank and were turning it in place. Soldier Arthur Shilstone says, “They looked at me, and they were looking for answers, and I finally said: ‘The Americans are very strong.’”

Patriotic pride aside, the men of the 23rd were not equipped with super-human strength. They did, however, have inflatable tanks.

Shilstone was one of 1,100 soldiers who formed the unit, also known as the Ghost Army.

They were artists and illustrators, radio people and sound guys. Handpicked for the job from New York and Philadelphia art schools in January 1944, their mission was to deceive the enemywith hand... more »

Giant Photo Booth Pictures

This is a fantastic idea for home decoration, and so damned simple. Years ago, I used to hang giant concert posters, and it was so easy (and inexpensive) to get a sheet of foam board and spray adhesive (glue). It was a 15 minute project and the end result looked incredible. You can do the same with blown up photo booth pictures!

Adventure in Contentment - Vintage Air Travel Posters and Airline Nostalgia

As a young boy, I had the opportunity to fly frequently, often from the coasts to the Midwest. Every trip  was an adventure. Sometimes we flew in the summer, sometimes in the harshest winter conditions, watching the planes get de-iced minutes before take-off. I vividly remember flying on some of the puddlejumpers of Ozark Airlines, and I remember the good days of flying on United.

Each airport fascinated me, and the travel bug hit me at a very early age. To this day, airports still intrigue me, and I'm addicted to any vintage item related to the Golden Age of flying. It's stayed with me my entire life.

What I Love About Google+

I posted a still from this film earlier. +Matt Ingrouille liked it and used it as his new profile pic. +Shannon Shoffner then saw it and said  she liked the video, though it was a bit sad. Of course, Matt then asks which video (which I would have done as well) and she said, "It was a film student's thesis film in film school" Then she found the link, and this is that music video.  It's a music video for Dave Armstrong's single, "Tambourine," off of his album "Your Voice; A Violin. Your Tongue."

That's a circular path in a nutshell, and that's how we roll on the +!

This health awareness center is a non-medical facility to help kids find the resources they need to help with medical issues. We hope to help kids with issues like diabetes, cancer, and a host of other issues kids run into.

The Idea
I started this project to see what the POWER of G+ and social could do. The idea was that if everyone that circled you gave you $1, that'd be a big PLUS chunk of change to do some #awesomesauce  in this world.

The 1st campaign launched showed heart and I wasn't sure how it would turn out (it could have been worse & it can still be way better). I am proud to announce that $115 was raised for the initial #PLUSdollar  Project.

May 20, 1873, is considered the birthday of blue jeans. Jacob Davis, a tailor in Reno, Nevada, came up with the idea of riveted pants in response to a customer whose pockets kept ripping. He feared someone might steal his idea and recruited Levi Strauss, owner of dry goods wholesaler Levi Strauss & Co., as a business partner. They obtained a patent on May 20, 1873.

The Two Horse logo demonstrates the incredible strength of Levi's clothing. The logo is first branded onto the leather patch of the "XX" jeans in 1886 and is still used today.

Consumers in the United States buy approximately 450 million pairs of jeans every year.

On average, U.S. consumers have seven pairs of jeans in their wardrobe, according to Cotton Incorporated.

The Art of Leonid Afremov

"I found the work from Leonid Afremov while I was navigating on deviantART and I have to say that his paintings really got my attention. Leonid Afremov is a Belarusian painter who was born in Vitebsk, in 1955. Coincidentally or not, he was born in the same town as Marc Chagall, the famous artist who also founded the Vitebsk Art School along with Malevich & Kandinsky.

Leonid Afremov graduated from Vitebsk Art School in 1978 and is one of the elite members. His painting are often colorful landscapes, cityscapes and figures, and are typically painted using a palette knife and oil paint.

The General Motors Motorama 1961

The General Motors Motorama was an auto show staged by GM from 1949 to 1961. These automobile extravaganzas were designed to whet public appetite and boost automobile sales with displays of fancy prototypes, concept vehicles and other special or halo models. Motorama grew out of Alfred P. Sloan's yearly industrial luncheons at New York City's Waldorf Astoria, beginning in 1931. They were almost invariably held in conjunction with the New York Auto Show, that for many years was held traditionally in the first week of January.

The final Motorama show was held in 1961 in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. More than one million visitors attended.

How To Teach The English Punctuation System

Did you know that you put in a comma in your writing whenever you take a breath? (I assume that means while reading aloud.) How about a period? Well, I guess that’s a deeper breath.

You might also try putting a period at the end of a “thought.” And what about semi-colons and colons? Well…maybe those are for exceptionally long breaths and thoughts? Okay, I guess you can see that these are no official “Struck and White” rules about usage but rather the kind of myths about standard punctuation that are perpetuated, sometimes by educators, I’m afraid.

Star Wars AT-AT Walker - An Inner Look

Deployed as weapons of terror, the gigantic Imperial All Terrain Armored Transport walkers advance inexorably on the battlefield like unstoppable giants. Of course, some of us know better...

There's something about schematics and cut-away diagrams like this that sings to my inner geek. This one is interesting and it fascinates me. I'm reminded of The Way Things Work by David Macaulay, who piqued my interest as a young kid.
