About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse.  At the time I didn’t think much about it.  But my voice never fully recovered.  So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis.  This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly.  Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold.  It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.

While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord.  But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.

It's time to decriminalize nature and legalize food.

A dairy farmer in Wisconsin is facing two and a half years in jail for selling raw milk. 

Even the charge is legally false. The "buyers" of the milk were actually part of a "buyer's club" who bought shares in the cows. 

But let's be honest: The dairy farmer's crime was offering people an alternative to the massive and politically powerful Wisconsin dairy industry. 

The problem with raw milk production is that it cannot be industrialized. So it's not a product that giant companies can produce at scale. Therefore, they want it to be unsafe and illegal and they press government to make sure that happens.

It looks like Google+ has launched some new help pages. At least the design is new:

Grooming Your Google+ Circles in 4 Simple Steps

People who aren't on Google+ will trot out a variety of reasons why they are afraid to make the jump ... 

 1. Facebook is just fine. 
 2. G+ is a ghost town. 
 3. G+ is confusing, especially this Circle business.

While I can't relate to the first two reasons, however, I can relate to number three.

Circles are simple in their nature: add people to Circles based upon topic or relationship. Create one for close friends, family, co-workers, heavies, and so on.

It's fun at first. But eventually -- and it happens to all of us -- we run into Circle fatigue (http://goo.gl/pMrE4) because you are forced to decide upon each contact how they fit into your life.

Very Interesting interview with writer and author +Demian Farnworth  who is a writer for +Copyblogger .He wrote some interesting articles about SEO and author rankings. Tips for new writers and great insight. By listening to him I got the feeling that the passion that drives him to write will take him to "higher grounds" soon as he talks about his writing like something he cannot be without. A sort of "daily bread" for the soul.

Hi Google+ - 

I know this has been addressed before.  Plenty of feedback forms have been sent.  People have posted about it. And it’s now way past time for this to be fixed.  
I like to share posts.  A lot of us like to share posts.  It’s the nature of the community and central to our experience.  However, when I share posts, all the comments and plus ones stay with my post and do not attach to the original post as they should.
I can disable commenting and tell people to click through, but people don’t do that and why should they?  They assume it’s like Facebook and the original person is going to see the Likes and be able to read the comments.  Logical.  The way it should be.  
When a post of mine is shared, I’d like to respond to any comments, but unless I track down every share and share of share, it’s not going to happen.  That’s wrong.

This story will warm you better than a coffee in a cold winter day:
"We enter a little coffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. While we're approaching our table two people come in and they go to the counter -
'Five coffees, please. Two of them for us and three suspended'
They pay for their order, take the two and leave. I ask my friend:
'What are those 'suspended' coffees ?'
'Wait for it and you will see'
Some more people enter. Two girls ask for one coffee each, pay and go. The next order was for seven coffees and it was made by three lawyers - three for them and four 'suspended'. A few weeks ago we revealed that we were seeking Explorers to help us shape the future of Glass. To do that, we asked people across Google+ and Twitter to tell us what they would do #ifihadglass . We could never have imagined such an enthusiastic response! There were so many creative, diverse, and (sometimes) crazy applications. We’ve certainly learned a lot through this whole process and it’s inspiring to hear how much passion there is for Glass. 

Now for the really exciting bit... we know you’ve all been waiting patiently, which is why we’re pleased to announce that the results are in. Over the next few days we’ll be sending out invitations to our Explorer Program through Google+ and Twitter. If you saw +Matt Steiner 's last post he announces that you can now put your personal GIF into your +Google+ profile photo space. Great news but how do you do that?

Here is how: (very easy, trust me, if I did it, your grandmother can too)

1) *Go to : http://makeagif.com/*
2) Select as many photos as you like from your computer
3) Click Continue
4) Set Speed to low-medium fast or custom
5) *Download to your computer
6) Go to your profile on +Google+ 
7) *Click on "Change Cover" bottom right on your profile picture
8) Upload from your computer
9) Enjoy

Open Thread: Is Google+ getting worse?
Since Google annoyed me by cancelling Reader, I've become more attune  to some of google+ flaws. The "improvements" got worse. Do you agree?

1. Search used to remember who I correspond with most. Now, search gives anything to market brand names and users I'm not even associated with.

Example: I visit "Ron's" page frequently. I type 'R" in search. It brings it up first. It's now changed so it brings up random results.

Improving accessibility in Hangouts

Accessibility is something we care a lot about on the Hangouts team. The Hangout Captions app, for example, enables live transcription services for the deaf and hard of hearing (http://goo.gl/4RujF). And "Take the Floor" makes it easier for sign language speakers to do a Hangout together (http://goo.gl/chyKS). Today we're rolling out two accessibility improvements in Hangouts - a Sign Language Interpreter app, and a fuller set of keyboard shortcuts. 

1) Using the Sign Language Interpreter app, deaf or hard of hearing users who prefer sign language can invite interpreters to speak and sign for them during a Hangout. They'll always see their interpreter at the top right of the window, and they'll become the focus of the Hangout whenever their interpreter speaks for them. I've been at TED this week, and in the interest of staying fully present and trying to digest all that it offers, I've been mostly offline.  (I'll try to post some takeaways over the weekend.  As TED themselves point out, they do an astounding job of documenting and sharing the event so that the audience doesn't have to...)

It has already been incredible...  Really loved +Elon Musk, +Sergey Brin, +Amanda Palmer, +Lawrence Lessig... and the many many other incredible artists, thinkers and doers that I've discovered.
