Curious: is anyone experimenting with peer-to-peer/bittorrent for distribution?  At #io13 , I was talking to a Chrome engineer about WebRTC, a new web standard, and they see peer-to-peer distribution as an important motivation for it. It saves publishers wads of bandwidth by spreading the load. Same way Skype and Spotify have always worked (roughly). It can still be tracked centrally via other channels.

It makes me wonder if we might see a bit of a revival (I recall Engadget trying this out years ago, just after starting their podcast). It's crazy that videos and audios are still following the model of hammering the publisher's servers, punishing them for making a popular show. Your next-door neighbour could already have the same content and it makes no sense to go and fetch it again from some distant server.

Mobile HTML5 and Offline Storage

I'm sure this newly proposed storage API solves a unique problem and is for a good cause,  appreciate it's a modified version of an existing API, but ... I'm feeling a bit of Offline Fatigue at this point. So this rant is nothing about chrome.managed.another.offline.api.for.your.perusal, but offline in general.

HTML5 must have at least 10 significant offline storage APIs, if you include appCache and Son of AppCache, as well as vendor-specific APis. Browser apps are really no better off than two years ago, as there's still no consensus across the 5 majors. LocalStorage isn't feasible for complex apps, while half the browsers support Indexed and half support WebSQL. Neither of which are suitable for large media anyway .What is suitable is FileSystem, but Firefox went its own way on that too... more »

As I suspected (http://softwareas.com/thoughts-on-blink), Opera made the decision to switch to WebKit without knowing Blink was coming - I was curious and Mike Taylor confirms it here (10:18), also confirming Opera (at least the top brass) knew about Blink in advance.

I doubt it would have made much difference, other than they probably would have waited for Blink details before diving in.

He also notes that Presto development continues for TVs, for now.

Apparently Google doesn't index HN properly. I was looking for this:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5698370

But it doesn't show up with the following query and even if you type the HN title into Google, HN doesn't show up, only mirrors of it (https://www.google.com/search?q=Show+HN%3A+Create+Javascript+charts+with+one+line+of+Ruby). Anyone know about that? I can't see how HN is on a blacklist.

I just realized that my kids will never use phone numbers.

I can communicate with text, pictures, and video using the new Hangouts app. The structure of a cell phone number doesn't make sense (http://xkcd.com/1129/) and it's tied to a specific device. In the future I expect you to contact me, +Chris Cartland, wherever I am.

We're not quite ready to completely throw away phone numbers yet, but the idea that you need to know a string of numbers in order to talk to someone is going to be hard to explain to a kid.

concatenate.js
I sometimes get really annoyed with things. I then try to channel that negative energy into writing a program that fixes my annoyance (AKA rage driven software development). https://github.com/google/concatenate.js (https://npmjs.org/package/concatenate-js) is the newest product of this creative process :) My colleagues at Google may know the technique as "super uncompiled".

Over a year ago I added source map support to our JS serving stack, but it was really not that awesome. First of all: In order to have a source map you actually have to compile your JS. Depending on how much you have of it that might actually take a while (thus me being annoyed). Turns out we have so much JS, you can't really deliver all the files in individual HTTP requests during development (where you want that because it is really awesome for debugging); it then turns out that... more »

Can Asm.js give us Vim in a Textarea?

So a Vim share from earlier today has over 100 shares...gives me hope someone will start a kickstarter for my eternal Vim-in-a-textarea wish. I want this for general web interaction (like the Plus status I'm typing into now) and it's obviously important for Cloud IDEs.

The important thing is it must be actual Vim, not a JS simulation, so the project is mostly a Vim-specific C-to-JS transpiler. (Of course, there's other stuff too like managing config files and plugins.)

I'd hoped NaCl might help here, but porting 20-year old games has been the priority. Now there's a new hope. asm.js is built to compile C/C++ into JS, so textarea Vim might actually be possible to pull off in the near future.

Hacker News was initially built by YC co-founder Paul Graham as a demonstration of Arc, a new programming language he’d been working on. He quickly realized that it could help bring together the companies he was supporting and the rest of the folks who wanted in. With 1.6 million page views and 200,000 unique visitors on a given weekday, it’s now a key part of the venture firm’s success.

HN is one of those sites with an interesting model. Similar to LinkedIn, it's become a media company - and taken readers away from other media sites - but without having any interest in direct ad revenues. GitHub is another example - took coders away from SourceForge, but with a completely separate model that precludes ads even for free users.

The humble headphone socket

We saw a big part of #io13 's keynote dedicated to music. Audio is a huge part of the smartphone experience these days. Both music and podcasting have benefited from powerful devices and displays; mobile bandwidth; moar storage; better batteries (still sucks but hey, those machines are doing 10x as much as they used to).

One thing people might forget is a more mundane innovation: the headphone socket.

This used to be a cash cow for manufacturers, each coming with their own messed up little adaptor format, so the dear customer could forget to take it on vacation and find themselves tracking down the item again in a store and replacing it for a handsome sum. Or paying more for a car adaptor, etc.

No-one cared that much because you could fit hardly any files on the phone and the UI was too rubbish to bother. Only real... more »

Quick Android #io13 notes

Excited about several new features introduced here. Google is clearly thinking hard about +Developer Experience .

* Android studio - IntelliJ is a wonderful base for an IDE, and this looks like a well thought out integration, with intelligent UI previews augmenting the code.
* Translation built into console - you just choose a language, it does you a menu of providers and prices...and a few days later, there's your Russian APK ready to upload.
* Alpha and Beta testing - circle your testers and the app will roll out to just them. They can leave Play reviews and they remain private.
* Analytics built into console - nice touch.

Made it! And finally made it back online too after much adventure.

The actual checkin took all of 5 minutes (around 5:30pm).

Okay looks like my patent-pending "survive til IO" plan paid off! I was at 99%, dropped it to 94% thanks to +Brad Parks' suggestion, and was worried about upgrading because I'd have to upgrade every user on my domain, forevah, and it only goes to 25 anyway.

My IO gift arrived 2 days early -the leaky hole is plugged for another year- ...

Edit: Actually, this is even better. One can now pay for extra GMail storage. Awesome! (Previously, paid storage couldn't be used for GMail, a point of constant confusion.)

A brilliant article by +Luke Wroblewski "New Layouts for the Multi-Device Web".  Myself and +Michael Mahemoff were exploring something similar two year ago at IO and we developed FormFactorJS (https://github.com/PaulKinlan/formfactor) to allow you to specialise interactions per formfacto.
