I'm so happy to find out the hard way that Windows 7 Home Premium doesn't allow remote desktop connection, so even though I own Windows 7 on my desktop, I can't reach it (and all the windows-specific programs I need) from class with my linux tablet. Lovely artificially handicapped software!

Hey, I'm going to be running a tabletop RPG based in the Firefly Verse this summer, and I'd like story ideas please :) Here's the setting thus far:
Setting: after Simon has rescued River from the Academy, but shortly before Miranda is broadwaved, the nefarious government-sponsored institution is still operating on exceptionally talented individuals, trying to craft an elite force "ideal for defense deployment". But when the Serenity gang exposes how they created the Reavers, their entire operation(s) is(are) at great risk. Problem is, how do you shut down a group of highly trained psychic assassins?!?
In this world, PCs will get to be a student in the Academy at various stages of training. (One is actually a graduate who is deployed to help the up-and-coming recruits with their field work) After a couple of sessions to help establish relationships and... more »

Cough cough. Hack hack. Stay back.
Looks like I'm taking a final tmrw morning and infecting all my classmates with this 48+ hour fever thing. Oh, and failing it in the process, since I've been sick and slightly hallucinogenial throughout my entire two day study period. But since I don't have a stupid doctor's note, I must be faking it.

If corporations are persons with all the rights of a person, than are persons corporations with all the rights of a corporation? Does is work both ways, or are corporations the most free people around?
This article piqued my interest because it has the strange affect of inducing two conflicting ideas: First, "That's horrible! People shouldn't be able to sell themselves into this quasi slavery." and second, "What a great way to ensure you're getting quality advice! People work harder when potential profits are at play." and "I wish I had known about this when he was offering shares..."
But as I think more heavily on this, I'm struck by how this reduces quality of life to a question of money.

Hey Advertisers, I've got a question for you?
Why, baby? Why?
You see, the staggering information in the article below, is COMMON knowledge within your industry, yet you persist in degrading the web experience for many, wasting time, money, resources and bandwidth feeding the public what they DO NOT WANT.
You look at Google, and the fact that they manage to generate ten times the revenue of Facebook, while on their platform (the only one that actually works) they deliver less than half the advertisements.
When does it occur to your industry that a huge majority of people only want to see advertisements when they are looking for them, or in the process of purchasing something relevant to your advertisement?
This is not rocket science, people. What works, is Adworks. What works is Adsense. What doesn't work? Practically everyt... more »

Appearing as a guest at a big convention like MegaCon is a lot of fun, but it’s also exhausting. People always ask me if my arm or hand or wrist is tired near the end of a long day of signing, and I always tell them the truth: my body never gets tired; it’s my brain that is exhausted. Signing is so much more than, well, signing. It’s listening and engaging and sharing moments and meeting hundreds of people in a relatively short amount of time, doing my best to not rush people while understanding that the person in front of me and the person still waiting behind them may have been in that line for over an hour. It’s drawing out shy kids who are excited to meet me, but don’t know what to say. It’s handling people who can be a little strange — if harmless — who may not know when it’s really time for them to move on. It’s telling someone that I’m sorry, but I can’t sign that thing, or I can’t pose for that pic... more »

Part of the problem of trying to learn how to write a pop-up box for a website, is that all the sites that know how to make pop-ups...make pop-ups.
Disclaimer: I'm not trying to put ads on my site, these are info boxes I'm trying to write.

I love how our TA copyrights the project instructions he gives us. Like anyone is going to want to reuse his obfuscated, poorly-worded, and inevitably incomplete directions.

So I'm watching through Buffy and Angel in airing order, and I'm in seasons 7/4 right now. This is my first time through, so don't tell me stuff! But I was talking with some friends the other day and we realized I missed something pretty stinking important...

When the Watcher's Council blows up in "Never Leave Me", it is NOT clear that the random building that the film cuts to is the Council. In fact, because the speech wraps up so well, I thought the explosion was the beginning of the next scene, and was expecting to find out what it was later. Did anyone else think this when they first saw it?

BREAKING: Mississippi bans slavery.
An immigrant from India, inspired by the movie Lincoln, did some research and discovered that the state of Mississippi never officially ratified the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which bans slavery.
Ranjan Batra, who is an associate professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, went home after seeing the movie and went to the site USConstitution.net. There, he discovered a footnote on ratification of the amendment that said: "Mississippi ratified the amendment in 1995, but because the state never officially notified the US Archivist, the ratification is not official."
Wait, 1995?
It turns out that Mississippi refused to ratify the amendment in the 1860s, then forgot all about it until 1995. When lawmakers in the 1990s realized that the state still hadn... more »

The geometry of music revealed! The red lines connect notes that are a major third apart. The green lines connect notes that are a minor third apart. The blue lines connect notes that are a perfect fifth apart.
Each triangle is a chord with three notes, called a triad. These are the most basic chords in Western music. There are two kinds:
A major triad sounds happy. The major triads are the triangles whose edges go red-green-blue as you go around clockwise.
A minor triad sounds sad. The minor triads are the triangles whose edges go green-red-blue as you go around clockwise.
This pattern is called a tone net, and this one was created by David W. Bulger. There's a lot more to say about it, and you can read more in this Wikipedia article:
