Harvard researchers grow garden of nanoscience delights
"Spring is like a perhaps hand," wrote the poet E. E. Cummings:
"carefully
moving a perhaps
fraction of flower here placing
an inch of air there...
without breaking anything."

With the hand of nature trained on a beaker of chemical fluid, the most delicate flower structures have been formed in a Harvard laboratory—and not at the scale of inches, but microns.

These minuscule sculptures, curved and delicate, don't resemble the cubic or jagged forms normally associated with crystals, though that's what they are. Rather, fields of carnations and marigolds seem to bloom from the surface of a submerged glass slide, assembling themselves a molecule at a time.

By simply manipulating chemical gradients in a beaker of fluid, Wim L. Noorduin, a postdoctoral fellowa... more »

Center City Job Fair For Ex-Offenders Is Canceled After 3,000 Show Up

The City of Philadelphia shut down a career fair for ex-offenders today after an unexpected crowd of thousands showed up, résumés in hand. There were lots of disappointed job seekers and potential employers this morning. The city was expecting about 1,000 people to show up, but about three times that number were standing in a line that wrapped around the Municipal Services Building, across from City Hall.

Also Cannes film festival suffers $1m jewellery theft. More than $1m (£650,000; 777,000 euros) worth of jewels have been stolen from a hotel in Cannes, French police say. The jewels were to be loaned to stars appearing at the famous annual film festival on the French Riviera. They were taken from the hotel room of an employee of exclusive Swiss jewelers Chopard in the early hours of Friday morning.

Scientists reported this week in the journal Cell that they had used somatic cell nuclear transfer techniques to create a source of embryonic stem cells from the skin cells of a patient.

Scientists have successfully reprogrammed human skin cells to become embryonic stem cells capable of transforming into any other cell type in the body.

I still think there might still be a possibility of rejection of new tissues from these stem cells because the mitochondria is from the egg donator.

We should all hope news of this work reaches the widest possible audience, including (perhaps especially including) nonscientists.

I have always amazed with the new changes of any +Google  Applications. I do remember people criticized much about the black bar when it first arrived, and now I could barely remember how it was before. So the most recent changes on #Google  Plus are a bit sudden and I know people don't like quick changes. For example, I currently don't see my contacts on hangouts window next to this post, it is all white. I am sure +Vic Gundotra and his team will work and improve this new layout and tiny problems. I can't stop laughing as one of the Plussers posted a cute dog picture which was saying "I was on Google+, before it was #Pinterest . Another "Turkish" recipe from my mom: KARNIYARIK, which translates as "split belly".
It is widely made and loved by every Turkish. I just want to warn calorie watchers as this is not very light but delicious. It is almost always served with Turkish rice cooked with Sehriye (Capellini Corti) and butter; and also with some yogurt.
You need to buy eggplants immediately before cooking as eggplants get softer in the fridge. Huge American eggplants are not suitable for this dish as you need to look for little ones or Asian eggplants.
After pealing the eggplants (1 1/2 lb.) in stripes, leave them in salty water for about 15 minutes. Put some vegetable oil (preferable olive oil) in a fry pan and heat it. Until the oil gets really hot, dry the eggplants, then fry them, and put them on a paper towel after frying. Place the eggplants on an oven dish, preferable a glass one.... more »

"The best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool"
Daisy Buchanan
from The Great Gatsby’s

"...Is there any female character in American literature more coquettish and coveted than Daisy Fay Buchanan? She’s the most desirable debutante, the ever-evading maid. She’s warm, feverish, thrilling, intoxicating—a siren, an enchantress, a blossoming flower. She’s Galahad’s chalice; she’s Guinevere and the Grail. She’s the quintessential Southern belle, cool in her white dress with her white mansion and her little white mobile. She’s the enchanted object, the great American dream, all bright eyes and a voice full of money—and of course she’s the light, that green light, drawing men, mothlike, to her flame. She’s the golden girl and the incorruptible angel and all the Platonic ideals that artists and poets throughout the greatages have required thei... more »

This mesmerising whirlpool is as deadly as it is beautiful.

The image was taken by paraglider Scott Patman in Western Australia, just south of Perth, on Friday.
Dr Rob Brander, who describes himself as a “surf scientist” and beach safety educator from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, explains:
"Some crazy rip action in Western Australia south of Perth. Giant swirls heading off the beach. Looks like you can get sucked into one! Well, they look worse than they are... When you get big, clean swell hitting the beach at a strong angle, you get strong longshore currents that can peel offshore forming eddies. Very impressive though."

A 110-foot whale-shaped hot air balloon called the Skywhale has begun floating above Australia's capital, Canberra, but critics are divided over the "esoteric" design and public cost.
The 1100-pound balloon was commissioned to mark Canberra's 100th birthday at a cost of £200,000. Another £32,000 was funded privately.
The balloon was designed by the internationally renowned artist and former Canberran, Patricia Piccinini, who said the artificial creature suited the capital, which was a planned city.

Istanbul's historic İnönü Stadium will witness one last derby game, before leaving its ground as a new stadium will be constructed.
The historical stadium, home to one of Turkey’s most heated fans and located in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district, will be demolished and rebuilt as a modern, new stadium with newer facilities. The club had been planning to renovate its historic stadium next season to turn the venue into a more lucrative one; similar to what its rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe did in recent years.
