YouTube Launches Paid Channels

Digital Theatre, for example, brings the British stage to any screen in HD (TV, Tablet, Phone, Laptop) for $4.99/month.  Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods, Jonathan Price in King Lear, & David Tennant in Much Ado About Nothing are a few of the launch programs.

I know I'll be taking advantage of the 14-day free trial on this channel.  It looks like there are 53 channels in all, starting at 99 cents a month.

As I'm typing this at around 16:45 PDT on April Fools' Day, Google's YouTube is running one of the funniest stunts I've seen in years.  

On this currently live video feed (YouTube Announces The Nominees For Best Video (Day 1)) we have a pair of presenters reading the titles and uploader descriptions of seemingly rather randomly selected YouTube videos.  They're not showing the videos mind you (except for a few being "spotlighted") -- just reading texts from large piles of red and white YouTube cards, in a manner reminiscent of some twisted awards ceremony from an alternative universe.

And in fact, this April Fools' Day event is part of a larger gag (one of many deployed by Google for today -- others included&... more »

First Sale Doctrine

SCOTUS has decided 6-3 that buyers of foreign copyrighted works can resell them in the US.  A graduate student from Thailand set up a business doing just that on eBay, and the publishers, who set lower prices overseas, and higher prices in the US for the same book, didn't like that. 

I expect we'll see more folks trying to arbitrage items now.
