Hilarious. What lost productivity. We should all meditate during takeoff and landing, sending the plane up and down with our energy

About 14 years ago, I got a bad cold, and my voice became hoarse. At the time I didn’t think much about it. But my voice never fully recovered. So I went to a doctor and was diagnosed with left vocal cord paralysis. This is a nerve problem that causes your left vocal cord to not move properly. Despite extensive examination, the doctors never identified a cause — though there was speculation of virus-based damage from my cold. It is quite common in cases like these that a definitive cause is not found.
While this condition never really affected me — other than having a slightly weaker voice than normal which some people think sounded a little funny — it naturally raised questions in my mind about my second vocal cord. But I was told that sequential paralysis of one vocal cord following another is extremely rare.
Fast forward to last summer, when the same pattern repeated itself... more »

There is still a digital divide, and it may be growing wider.
Four brilliant, privileged and geeky friends of mine,+Katherine Barr, +Josh Elman, +Robert Scoble, and +Randi Zuckerberg, appeared recently on a panel at the First Ever MamaBear Conference hosted by 500 Startups. (Yes, they’re also friends of mine.) The topic was how their children interact with technology. Their kids are toddlers. I watched because 1)I love these people and 2)I’ve got grandkids.
Most of the discussion revolved around how their toddlers relate to iPads and iPhones, and how naturally technological literacy comes to them. Josh’s daughter tried to swipe a TV set in a hotel room. Some of these parents were concerned about how much time their children spent with devices as babysitters, or how their kids picked up on the parents’ habits of multi-tasking and not giving their kids their full attention. While th... more »

I'm so proud of my foster son, Jerry Kirkpatrick and his wife Jamie Kirkpatrick, who are graduating from community college this year after struggling, having a child, and always working full time. Congratulations, Jerry and Jamie. Jerry is the first member of his family EVER to go to and graduate from college.

Today wore all my sensors all the time. At the end of the day: Nike Fuel Band says I took 7280 steps and had 3759 fuel points. Jawbone says 8823 steps. Basis? 5552 steps. And the Pebble says I got a phone call from my son-in-law. We're just at the beginning of sensor technology.

I made this comment on a post of +Robert Scoble this morning and I liked it so much I thought I'd post it here, too. It's a response to privacy concerns about Google Glass:
Let's go back a bit, into the past, when we lived in communities with shared outhouses or crapped in fields right next to each other. People also gave birth in the fields, in front of each other.
Privacy is a relatively new concept, and bathroom privacy didn't really exist before the age of the bathroom. Outhouses existed to removed the stench from a home, not for privacy. Bedroom privacy didn't exist either, and still doesn't in many countries.
I am beginning to think that privacy, like cradle-to-grave job security, was an artifact of a brief moment in time for the developed world. A luxury we can no longer afford. And it's over. It was over when dads went into the delivery ... more »

My two-week review of Google Glass: it all depends on the price
This week I gave five speeches while wearing it.
I passed through airports four times (two more in a couple of hours).
I let hundreds of people try my Google Glass.
I have barely taken it off since getting it other than to sleep.
Here's my review after having Google Glass for two weeks:
1. I will never live a day of my life from now on without it (or a competitor). It's that significant.
2. The success of this totally depends on price. Each audience I asked at the end of my presentations "who would buy this?" As the price got down to $200 literally every hand went up. At $500 a few hands went up. This was consistent, whether talking with students, or more mainstream, older audiences.
3. Nearly everyone had an emotional outburst of "wow" or ... more »

I mentor at least once a month at Gangplank, and often elsewhere. There's never a day when I don't feel gratified to be able to help, but today was an extraordinary day.
My first appointment was a man from Flagstaff. He is a flight nurse, and had developed an API for transferring patients from hospital to hospital--which is now done by fax and phone call. Without experience as an entrepreneur and without investment, he had found a technical co-founder, developed a solution that integrates with major EHRs, sold it to several rural hospitals, and was now on the verge of deploying his first large urban hospital system. He told me I was the first person he had been able to talk to who understood the industry and could help him go further. In a long conversation, we discussed the drawbacks and merits of bootstrapping vs. taking investors. I admire him.
My next appointment was a w... more »

Good heavens, compared to last week this seems like a slow news day. Which means only followups and nothing really new.
I'm being facetious. I'm happy to have time to digest what happened last week, and even in Canada.
