A four month old Siberian tiger cub (panthera tigris altaicia) successfully captures and kills a large plant. This guy is a wildlife rescue that found a home at the Wildlife Waystation, the rescue facility I have supported since 1987 (www.wildlifewaystation.org)
He did grow into his feet and now successfully attacks and brings down redwood trees!
The Siberian tiger is highly endangered in its native habitat due to extreme poaching pressure. There are estimated to be well under 1000 wild Siberian tigers.
Hope you enjoy the image.

Our place in the Stars
I wanted to see how the new update to G+ works with a vertical image. This is from last month - from up the coast in Santa Cruz, CA at Davenport Beach. I used a tilt shift lens, a really bright flashlight, and a smaller bright flashlight to create this. Hope you enjoy it.

Tower of Babel Radiating Dawn: April 2 2013 © Copyright Stephanie Sawyer - all rights reserved.
Arches National Park, Utah
If only I had been to Arches National Park before. This was the best I could do driving into the park in complete darkness, not sure where to shoot. I wish I would have been able to find a much better foreground. Also, I didn't want to run around in that soil too much. That dark almost black looking stuff in the foreground is cryptobiotic crust. It's super fragile. It takes years to recover if you stomp on it.
I was hoping to get a nice sky like that again the next dawn now that I had a better orientation of the park. But nope, got clear blue skies the next day. Anyway, I shot the Tower of Babel with two vertical shots which I merged in Photoshop.

Corona Del Mar, California
This is about all I've been able to shoot with my new 16-35mm f/2.8L. Stuff down by the beach. It's not far from home and I can decide last-minute if the cloud potential will be good. This day it looked really good. I was not disappointed. Instead of shooting to get the arch, I went to the side of it to get a different perspective that would work with the cloud formations and breaks. Also there were at least a half dozen photographers at this beach. It's becoming almost too popular. So I moved far away from the crowd.
Sure enough.... as soon as I found a couple of comps I wanted to work, another photographer literally set up right next to m... more »

Yes, It's the Ever Popular Watchman Tower View From the Bridge: November 1, 2012. © Copyright Stephanie Sawyer - all rights reserved.
Zion National Park, Utah
Should I be embarrassed that I actually stood with at least 100 other photographers on the Bridge to get the ever popular Watchman Tower Shot? And even more embarrassed that I'm actually posting it???
I know, I know. But I consider it a souvenir shot of being in Zion. I was coming back from checking out the Emerald Pools before meeting up with Steve Sieren and his workshop. There just happened to be a parking spot open. Well, it was sunset and there were some clouds in the sky. Some nice colors were starting to happen. Oh look, several photographers just left the bridge on the right side and a spot opened up. So, I set up took a few shots, and less than 10 minutes later left. It's not original, and joins ... more »

Second Beach, Olympic National Park
This was our second day back to Second Beach during last summer. The kids wanted to swim and play in the sand, so I made them go early in the morning to get some photography in. It was overcast, but the clouds were thin, letting in a bit of a warm glow. I thought this made a nice vertical comp with these larger rocks lined up and leading the way to a sea stack, or a line leading to an anchored ship!

The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah
This was taken during a Steve Sieren workshop in Zion National Park. It's almost overwhelming to focus on one comp at a time in the Narrows. There is so much good stuff. These rocks caught my eye. They lined up nice and pointed the way down the canyon.

North Lake Fall Sunrise
October 5, 2012. © Copyright Stephanie Sawyer - all rights reserved. This photo is copyrighted and is not to be used, copied, shared, or posted in ANY WAY without my written permission.
Eastern Sierra Nevada, Calfornia
I know that this is an extremely popular lake to photograph, but I can't help coming back every fall to get another shot. Each time I have gotten different conditions, and this was the first sunrise shot I got with mostly clear skies. It's not overly dramatic, and the skies weren't killer, but the whispy clouds that were present held a nice pink glow for awhile. There was also no wind, so of course that made for a great reflection.
It also wasn't swarming with photographers for once. Only 5 others that I could see. This allowed me to move around more to get a better foreground comp.

Reflection Lake, Mt. Rainier National Park
Man-o-Man! Did I get lucky here! I rarely get a sky like this. I decided to take the drive up to Reflection Lake to scout it out for a sunrise shot the next day. I almost didn't from being so tired and knowing that I had to wake up pretty early for the sunrise shot. But I didn't want to try to find my around in the early morning darkness, so I drove up the hill from the little Inn we were staying at after dinner.
The sky was almost clear when I first arrived and I was surprised at how much snow was still on the ground. I knew that I was a bit early in the summer to get wildflowers, but was still disapointed that there was mostly snow with no flowers at all. Oh well. As I was checking out the view, clouds started to roll in from behind me, but was staying clear to the west. I decided to set up my gear.... and before I knew it this... more »

Night Light... Donner Lake, 1am, Truckee, California
A good night light makes you feel safer. Lets you see in the dark. Is discreet and doesn't sear your eyeballs out of their sockets if you have to get up in the middle of the night and don't want to run into the door frame.
A good night light kisses you on the forehead and says quite tenderly; "It's time to sleep, sweet thing. Good night." And you always reply "'Night, light. Sweet dreams."
A good night light is timeless.

Here’s one from my archives which remains a favorite image of mine. I was at Umhlanga Beach on the South Coast of South Africa in the early morning for some seascape shoots. It was quite a cloudy and muggy day and hope’s of anything fantastic happening with the sunrise seemed slim. Heart of Stone... Truckee River, Winter 2013
It is a cold, cold heart
That will freeze the world around it,
Stuck in time where nothing can move.
Except for the strain of discontent, like echoes of a distant scream.
-------------------------------------------
Hey, how about THAT ditty for a Thursday night? haha! This rock in the frozen river reminded me of that famous painting "The Scream" for some reason. The story got all dark and tortured and sci-fi.
That was fun.

Gazing Down a Lazy River... Truckee River, California
This is a photo from new video "photo tips" tutorial I just posted on my blog: http://goo.gl/TxRhH. My point in doing this one was simply to show some ways to think about capturing photos from vacations or road trips under less-than-idea conditions. When you see the video, you'll get what I mean!
I know I've been places I may never visit again - and it's either grab the shot right then or go look at someone else's online. Not an option for me! I mean, say you're driving between destinations and you're on a schedule. You've got limited time and don't have the luxury of waiting around for the perfect weather and lighting conditions. Suddenly "Oooo!" you see a beautiful spot, slam on the brakes and jump out for a closer look. Dangit... no clouds, light is just "meh". ... more »

What Her Heart Had to Say About It... Truckee, California
Her heart was an impressionist,

--------------------------------------
This photo is actually a couple of years old. I ran across it looking for something else. It struck me how my processing style has changed in just a couple of years, but that it doesn't take away from the marvelousness of the moment. I like that. It takes some of the pressure off of always trying to be so danged perfect. I mean, sure I might do something different with this now... but dang, what a moment it was! And as I recall, I didn't have to process this all that much.
I could go back and do something different with sharpening and contrast. But honestly, I have other projects calling me... and there's something kinda cool about enjoying a blast from the past simply fo... more »

Threatening Elephant
The threat posed by this elephant to the photographer pales into insignificance when compared to the threat posed by the photographer's species to the elephant population in general.
According to Wikipedia:
Poaching significantly reduced the population of Loxodonta in certain regions during the 20th century. In the ten years preceding an international ban in the trade in ivory in 1990 the African elephant population was more than halved from 1.3 million to around 600,000.[30][31] An example of how the ivory trade causes poaching pressure is in the eastern region of Chad. There, the estimated elephant population was 400,000 as recently as 1970, but by 2006 the number had dwindled to about 10,000.
Additionally, the magnitude of poaching during 2006-2012 has been large, including some 3,000 elephants slaughtered during the three-year p... more »

You are all ensuring my kids may not see a live rhino in the wild by the time they're grown up.

More than 260 rhinos have been poached in 2013 alone!
RHINO HORN IS NOT MEDICINE - IT'S BASICALLY FINGERNAILS!
You may not like to see this, but it's necessary that many people see the reality of rhino poaching. If you report this photo as unsuitable you are more concerned about your own comfort than getting an important message out.

Hey, When Did You Get Here?
No one knows the official story of how Sloan's Lake was created and I have no idea why I always thought pelicans were strictly a coastal bird, but no matter - I am glad both are here.
Alone for now, I hope to see the rest of the colony, if there is one. This one was not upset at the gull but at a cormorant that swam by. I did capture that moment, but I liked this image much better.
Next goal - catching them in-flight.

These two, plus another owlet that remained hidden for much of the time I was there, are roosted in a cavity of a red rock in the western suburbs. It was a short, but entirely uphill, hike on a well-used trail to get to the location.
I allowed the FG to go overexposed in order to get enough light into the cavity and then brought the FG back in post. Make sure you view it LARGE!
