Take A Walk Along the Coast
I totally LOVE it when a painting is more fun to paint than it probably should be. This piece was just that. It tied my love of paper, of color, of mark making, and of the coast all in one and my heart smiled big through the entire process. It is hard to grasp the scale of just how big this piece is...4 feet by 4 feet...on paper. You can click through to my blog to see the work in progress, view up close detail shots, and see its size. Today I am loving so much the fact that I can work hard...but work hard creating things I love. Worth every minute. http://ardithsart.blogspot.com/2014/07/take-walk-along-coast-by-ardith-goodwin.html

Trailblazer
There is something to be said for a beautiful self-confidence in a woman to the point where she is comfortable in her own skin. This was an abstract on paper that I had painted two years ago with a great connection to the earth, nature, and the flow of of all living things.

Today, I transformed it into a vision of a confident woman who is connected to the flow of energy that is beautiful, transformative, and a reflection of how she loves. She was a supreme joy to paint.

The Wearers Of The Mask
Masks have always fascinated me. Coming from a family of professional clowns and the home of Mardi Gras, I learned that there is a shift in the mind when a physical mask is placed in front of the self. It can lead towards confidence, toward a connection to the emotion one wishes to avoid, or to the jubilation of celebration and revelry. Masks are an integral part of art history, my history, and play a powerful role in the story I am writing.

For we are all, at one time, "Wearers Of The Mask." The key is learning when to wear it so that it doesn't overtake our true self from seeing the light of day.

Teaching is a calling of the highest order in my mind. It is not for the timid, for the unsure, or those who seek to control rather than guide. Teaching is the calling that holds the power to create thinkers and dreamers and beautiful seekers of truth and it also holds the power to wound the spirit deeply for some. For those who are called to teach in any capacity, may that knowing be what inspires them to master what they teach, master their emotions with a strength of love, and strive to leave a lasting legacy of excitement and joy in the hearts and minds of those in our charge.
For every teacher who is beginning a new year or currently teaching, may we know this, may we live this, and may we have the best year yet!

The Journey Of The 12 Painting
This piece has so many lessons contained in it and I love and adore it for that. During my workshop, it was the canvas that I tested out ideas and showed techniques on for my students. Because I had purchased paints and had them sent ahead (brands I had never used) I was faced with using hues that were not my norm. Few I liked, some I hated, they were simply too neutral so I was eager to wash this and keep going, so I did. Toward the end of the workshop I spent a bit more time on it and then prepped it for shipping.

When I pulled it out of the box at home I was pleasantly surprised with how much I actually liked the muted palette, now that they had settled. I also LOVED the energy of the piece because it was a reminder of how wonderful my time was with the 12 artists in Seattle. I also LOVED the energy of the piece because it was a reminder of how wonderful my time was with the 12 artists in Seattle. What I opted to do, rather than pull my usually imagery out, was to let this breathe and remain an illusive abstract with the nuance of deeper areas, wildly humorous hidden things, and an energy that is palpable.

I lightened up areas, I created contrast in some, and I danced with the notion that the beings in this piece, if there are any are quite similar to the ones that would live in The Land of Ardithian. My guess is, there are 12 ;) "The Journey of 12" 36" by 36" fluid acrylic, charcoal, and oil pastel.___

The Legacy Of The Storyteller
This was such a complex piece, especially being 4 feet by 4 feet. After I decided to go in the direction of a figurative abstract, I knew I wanted to portray my love and belief that storytelling is vitally important, especially the stories passed down from the elders and ancients of our way of life and the cultures we all hold dear.

This piece celebrates the energy and flow between the elder and the child, the magical connection they share, and the movement of self and knowing that comes with the tradition shared from one held in high esteem. "The Legacy of the Storyteller" is a piece that embraces the complexity and elements of a rich imagination, all tied in between the two characters who adore one another.

To Honor The Wednesday 9
Today was hard. It wasn't as hard as the families and friends living the tragedy of Charleston, but as a victim of gun violence myself, it was hard figuring out how to process it and honor the lives of these beautiful people.

I prayed about it, said their names, and chose to use my art as a way to create a visual reminder of the impact they made as they gathered together to pray and study the bible. I also created it in the style of my art journal figures and pages because it was inspired by a previous page.

What a broken world we live in. I choose love over hate.

"The Dreamspinner"
This being has been walking around with me for weeks. She has moved in and out of my heart like a whisper and I couldn't put my finger on how to capture her until today. I love the mystery about her, the wonder of her story, and the fact that inwardly she seeks her own beauty and not that of anyone else. She is what dreams are made of.

The WishGiver
Somewhere between that place where I dream and where I send my wishes I found this being waiting patiently for me. She was moving in and out of my understanding that my wishes are being collected, carefully tended to, and some selected to be honored based on my willingness to see what is unseen, yet connected to my heart.

She is a complicated one, filled with the knowledge that not all wishes should be given and that in the act of wishing, I should be careful to tread. In The Land of Ardithian, she is The WishGiver...and she is a magical force to behold.

She is also one where the fracturing of the spirit has created an inner beauty that is profound.

Perpetual Motion
"Perpetual Motion" is an older painting that I loved when I painted it but there was something about it that stuck me right in my craw. I couldn't put my finger on it so I let it sit for three years....and sit it did...which is a complete oxymoron to why I painted it.

Today, with fresh eyes and a new set of ideas with paint, I immediately understood the impact this piece had in my world. Sometimes we move with the idea that forward is always the best way, but if we are on the wrong track forward may be the worst way.

Perpetual motion is a metaphor for direction, and most importantly, understanding our path and movement based on what our heart and our faith in the belief of love can show us. Sometimes, being still to consider our direction is what we are called to do, in spite of the motion all around us. This piece is part of my Marks ofAb... more »

Wear Your Own Crown
The message of beautiful diversity keeps coming up in my work and I am loving the lessons it is teaching me. In every family, group of friends, or congregation of common folk there are people struggling to embrace their true gifts. They sense that being like everyone else is a way to happiness. They sense that they are not enough.

Although I know there is a time and place where common bonds are important, ultimately what I know about life is that when I wear my own crown, the beauty of how I am made by my creator shines like the stars. I want to shine....I want others to as well. I want them to wear their own crowns!

"Wear Your Own Crown" 4 feet by 5 feet mixed media on canvas (It is outrageously colorful)

We Were Once Dreamers
Within every child exists a magical imagination...it is the substance of what dreams and play are made of. As we age, lots of factors cause us to loose sight of our creative gifts and brilliance...but they still remain within us...covered...hiding...and longing to be let free again.

This piece was painted to remind every single person that at one time they were a dreamer of dreams...and a master at everything that could be.

The Wayshowers

I had a dream about Wayshowers...about people who's energy fields were visible to others, because they light the way for love, for compassion, for knowledge, for creativity, and for faith. My dream was a clear as I have ever experienced, and I woke knowing I was called to paint it. This piece is my execution of that dream...sharing a love of fluid line, of geometric plane, and of unexpected, dynamic movement. It was meant to resonate with the energy that I feel around and in this magical world we live in. May we all by Wayshowers to someone. 30" by 48" acrylic on canvas www.ardithgoodwin.com

The Lines of Connectedness
I have been in the process of revisiting older pieces and fracturing them to achieve a look that is more cohesive with the body of work and elements that I am building now. "The Lines of Connectedness" is a new piece that gave me a lot of insight about how we are each unique, filled with our own peccadilloes, but we are still connected to the energy and flow of the universe. The Knowing
For years I moved through life with a knowing that I was meant for greater things. Not in a famous way, but in a way that my gifts were important and I was meant to be of service to others. Despite that knowing I struggled with my insignificance. No matter what positive things happened in my world, there was always a voice that said, "I am not significant."

Today, I stand as testament that the voice that spoke was a lie, every whisper, every thought that put an arrow in my heart, every single time. Every one of us is meant for greater things. We are meant to know our significance, embrace it, and use it to send out love and guidance into the world. My faith was a huge part of shifting that voice for me and I am grateful that I no longer live with a mask on....so very grateful. "The Knowing" 12" by 18" acrylic on paper (unframed)

For the Love of Glazing Acrylics
I have been smitten with a love of glazing. This piece alone has over 50+ layers in it to achieve this color intensity. There are moments I think I have gone mad when I say....just one more layer lololol. You can view my steps in progress pics for this piece on my blog. http://ardithsart.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-power-of-glazing-acrylics.html

I have learned so very much from studying the perception of the artists showcased in the Persepectives On The Arts book, 1961, that I have been altering over the last year. Today, Proust was heard loud and clear with how we each must consider the artistic point of view of the other. Loved letting the paint flow to consider this. You can see the work in progress pics of this page on my blog.

I so adore watching the young ones embrace the use of their art journals. Working With A Primary Color Palette
I am LOVING working with primary colors in this series. Although I have always been drawn to pops of red, I have not embraced these colors so boldly until now...and am loving their interactions. These three pieces are each 18" by 24" acrylic/mixed media on paper. They make my heart sing to look at them so I know I shall spend more time with red, yellow, and blue for sure.

For the Love of a Small Town 18" by 24" acrylic on paper
Ask me where my heart lives and I will tell you Mobile, Alabama. As a youngster growing up in the south I have vivid memories of the downtown area as a child, particularly the Gayfers department store and the blooming azaleas. When we piled in the car It was as if we were going to New York or something because of the vast expanse of those buildings, colors, and life that filled my eyes. Today, I am a co-owner of one of those little shops in that very downtown and there are moments I stand outside the doorway of our gallery, two blocks away from where that department store used to stand, and smile at the feeling of being that little one full of excitement again. Quaint little towns fill the south, many are being forgotten, and some are no longer in place. I hope I never live to see the day that small town America is no more.... more »

For the Love Of a Bird 4 feet by 5 feet aquamedia on paper
#5 in my series of "The Journal Speaks" celebrates my love of friendship, birds, and the quirkiness of being a bit different. Just as I work in my journals, perfection is never the key. Being free to explore glazes and marks, and layers within the context of the image and text is the focus on this larger substrate as well as my journal pages. Loving this entire process! You can view the series here: http://ardithgoodwin.com/the-journal-speaks/

Easel People Miniature Oil Paintings
I have fallen in LOVE with oil paints for the first time in my life because for the most part I have been allergic to the smell. Holbein makes some that I can actually use, so I have been loving getting to know my new medium. These little miniatures are 5" by 5" on panels and ship with mini wooden easels. They are a riot of fun to paint. http://ardithgoodwin.com/easel-people-paintings/

Community News Update PLEASE READ
I am looking for a couple of moderators to help me moderate posts here. Our group is amazing...but getting very large and drive by posting or link posting without dialogue is becoming an issue. I need a couple of folks to help me encourage members to follow our guidelines and some to help me remove posts that don't follow them. Any takers?
For all of our members, especially those who stay active, if you see a post that doesn't follow our guidelines, PLEASE help me by gently sharing with them how to post here. Many folks come for the first time and fail to take the time to read the guidelines. If we all pitch in it might be easier. Thoughts?

Cousin Esther is a Ham!
18" by 24" mixed media (oil/acrylic/ink)
Sometimes I have to let my imagination out to play just for the helluva it. This deliciously odd piece came to fruition as I as and laughed my way through her quirkiness...and birdish friend. Paintings like this one are what refill my well after a large, emotional piece. They are ever so important for play. www.ardithgoodwin.com/mixed-media-gallery

A mixture of paper, water soluble graphite, water color, fluid acrylic, Inktense blocks, and gesso. Total bucket of fun this one.

Worth every minute. http://ardithsart.blogspot.com/2014/07/take-walk-along-coast-by-ardith-goodwin.html___A mixture of paper, water soluble graphite, water color, fluid acrylic, Inktense blocks, and gesso. Happy Tuesday Friends
This is the 4th in a series of my larger, art journal pages created on really large canvas. I am loving the entire process but it is hard! This piece as collage, acrylic, graphite, charcoal etc and is 3 feet by 4 feet.

For those of you who are new to our community or haven't read our guidelines PLEASE do so. This group is too big now to message each person so if you post and don't follow our guidelines I will simply remove your post. Hope I won't have to, give us some insight into your process!

Hope your Tuesday is full of beauty friends!

To Peel Through the Layers 3' by 4' mixed media on canvas
This is #4 in my series, "The Journal Speaks," which is a body of work that showcases my love or art journaling on a much larger substrate. The concept of beauty is one that I study a great deal, find fascinating, and believe it is one of those aspects of human nature that lives invisibly...with great power. Transparency was the running thread for me, as I wrote about beauty, considered how complex it is, and finally, listened to the canvas for the message. You can read about my entire process and see work in progress pics if you click through to my blog. http://ardithsart.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-journal-speaks-about-beauty.html #abstractart   #artjournaling  ___Happy Tuesday Friends

Hard Work Pays Off
I was inspired by a Drawing Club post that showcased a graphite artist's first sketch and current sketch so I dug into my archives and found one of mine from 3rd grade, of George Washington.  I paired it with one of my current pieces and love how it reminds me that I am doing so much better than I give myself credit for sometimes. I didn't go to art school, but what I did do was take a love of doodling with me from when I was a child. If your child loves to draw, make a big deal out of that. That one skill can take them so many places!

Flowers After the Dance 18" by 24" acrylic on paper
Lately I have been really enjoying the play between marks and structure within my paintings. They begin with a connection to the paper, a dance if you will, as I lay down line and dot and movement within the space. Color actually comes afterwords, and changes and adapts as the light and play of subject matter begins to evolve. This piece gave me a visual shift from the ordinary to the unexpected. It reminded me why I love the dance so much, of not simply painting, but of mark making as well and finding its voice through the paper. http://ardithgoodwin.com/mixed-media-gallery/

The Gift of a Blue Butterfly
I haven't seen a butterfly in months, probably years. I am sure they have been around, but for some reason none have captured my attention, until this morning. I was setting up my outdoor studio and this little guy lighted upon the handle of my dolly, right beside a pine tree where a fence post lizard was perched. He sat that and ever so slowly moved his wings...seemed not to mind that I was inches from him, and then flew off. A few minutes later he came back and rested about two feet from me while I painted, just watching, just taking it all in. I have never seen a blue butterfly like this in my lifetime, I do hope I am lucky enough to see one again. He was simply beautiful!

Riding the Wave 12" by 36" acrylic on canvas
The call of the ocean is a powerful voice in the hearts of so many, especially those who play along the edges of its laughter and excitement as it hits the shore. Surfers seem to understand that call at the deepest level. The ocean seeps into their being, calls them back time after time, and captures their love for an eternity. Riding the Wave is a an abstract expression piece mixing the love of that call with the tremendous texture and movement found within the waves. It is a piece that speaks about passion

The Fabulous Family of Five 18" by 24" acrylic on paper
Every family has a story to tell. Be it hilarious, sad, challenging, or down right hard to believe. This piece reminds me so much of the family that heads out on a journey and fills it with memories that will stand the test of time. Laughter is shared, wonders are experienced, smells are everlasting, and life is beautiful.

Mother's Fruit Bowl 18" by 40" acrylic on paper
My mother used to have a bowl of plastic fruit on the table when I was a child and one of my fondest memories was pulling one off and chewing it when she wasn't looking. Kind of weird yes, but for some reason, that memory makes me incredibly happy and I miss those grapes to this day. "Mother's Fruit Bowl" is a combination of bold and soft colors with much happiness and love mixed in between the marks. Its a larger piece, 18" by 40" acrylic on paper. http://www.ardithgoodwin.com/mixed-media-gallery

The Conversation Is Divine 32" by 32" acrylic on paper
The art of table setting, for some, is a necessary part of living well. It is their way of creating beauty and sharing it with friends, family, and the occasional unexpected guest. As I worked through this piece I wanted to capture the love I have for a life filled with moments around such tables. They have been filled with the lessons of youth, tears of the loved, and laughter between friends. We gather together....around tables filled with life. (This piece is one in a series of Asemic Writing abstracts) #abstractpainting   #asemicwriting

I LOVE when I come back to our group and find so much amazing artwork and conversations! Makes me swoooon! I have been painting like mad. This piece is a new series incorporating marks, Asemic writing, and my new color palette. Having a ball working big and loose these days. Fluid acrylics, graphite, and Inktense Blocks. This piece is also larger 32" by 32" on paper.
