Scorpions are secretive, mysterious, and patient animals. What are they thinking as they wait for hours in their burrows? Although we can’t answer that yet, we can use a trick called electrophysiology to listen in to their nerve cells and to get a sense of what they perceive. It looks like mad science, but I will lead you through the maze of equipment we use, demystifying the process and explaining how easy and useful it actually is. _Cara Shillington, PhD (Department of Biology, Eastern Michigan University)_ *Male versus wild: Radio-tracking tarantulas*. Despite their notoriety and popularity in the pet trade, surprisingly little is known about tarantulas in their natural environment.  Where do they go and what do they do when they’re free of the glassy confines of your home aquarium? I will discuss many aspects of their life history and behavior both in captivity and in the wild.  Compared to most other arthropods, these animals are exceedingly long-lived (surviving 15 years or more in some cases).  Females remain in burrows for much of their lives, but matuScience HOAs2014-06-23 01:00:0078

And Americans wonder why the rest of the world think they're arrogant and ignorant.
Obviously a massive generalisation, but this really is a very pervasive cultural conditioning - that the USA is the whole world and everyone knows it.

I saw it again and again while I was travelling around the world. Even intelligent, relatively well travelled people, just assuming that everyone knows all the US state capitals and presidents and such, and that everyone speaks English and you can use US dollar bills everywhere.

The USA isn't even the only country in the world whose official name starts with "The United States of" and it's only a small part of America, yet the world is expected to follow along in calling them "The US" like the other United States counties don't count, or "America", like the rest of the continent doesn't count. ... more »

88 year anniversary of the publication of The Call of Cthulhu
Any time I hear the number 88 I think of 88mph and Back To The Future. But literary classics transcend the space-time continuum.
As established, I'm not much for shoes and I generally think high heels are evil and damage the musculature and skeletal systems... But these are particularly #tentacular

I just can't even. Of course there's fury over this. I don't even want to think about it. I don't want to reshare his photo. But I hope that everyone sees it and women cross the street to avoid him, men shun him, employers throw his portfolio in the recycling... I hope some Australian court finds a way to lock him away.

How do we, as a society, even get to a point where people think this way?

It's 4 in the morning...
I can't sleep. I'm far too afraid of sleeping. I'd give a long speech, but I'll just thank my producers who created an environment that nurtured me into feeling that sleep is an unsafe place, and I'll thank my friends who exacerbated the process. Thanks of course to the sociopath. And those who prop the system up.
I couldn't have done it without you.

Bye forever!”

I now live in a world where there are virtually no "safe" people in my real life. Because almost everyone I knew would rather not think about abuse happening in their own community, and definitely not talk about it. They'd rather hang out with a violent abuser than face the reality. Even my own family. It's a very alone place to be (and I can only say 'almost' rather than 'all' because there were 2 or 3 people out of a couple hundred who actually stood up and said “Sorry, buddy, you attacked our friend. Bye forever!”)

Resharing am old #intrepidtravel post for +Gizmo the Sane - you can see the devils swimming pool in the background of the third shot.

The fun part of this - a group of my friends and I decided to sneak into the national park on the full moon at midnight and stay for sunrise. We hiked into the jungle and jumped over a fence. At some a security guard started chasing us and we all scattered. One guy vanished... We were a bit worried but when we got back to camp the next day he was there, rather scratched up from running through acacia groves and climbing over barbed wire.

At some point I walked around a baobab tree and came face to face - or I should say, face to knee, with a wild elephant. That was a terrifying moment; my heart in my throat I backed away very slowly behind the tree and ran away. We all know African elephants are big, but you never really realise just how big untily... more »

My travels in Africa

I've been in over 50 countries, mostly long-distance overland travel. I hitch-hiked from Indonesia to India, from Cape Town to Cairo, all around Europe. I've travelled with a baby the length of the Pan-Americana from Patagonia to Quebec... So I figure, why not share some travel-nostalgia photos.

These three were taken at the same time, at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, at sunrise on the full moon, July 2001. The first view is looking east, to the sunrise, the second is looking west, to the full moon setting behind a rainbow, and the third is looking north, directly at the falls, with me posing.

The pictures were taken with a kodak disposable camera, printed in Zambia. The photos were scanned some years later.

#travel #Africa #Zimbabwe #VictoriaFalls #photography #nostalgia #flashback___Resharing am old #intrepidtravel post for +Gizmo the Sane - you can see the devils swimming pool in the background of the third shot.

We all know African elephants are big, but you never really realise just how big until you stumble within arms length of one.

And we watched the sun rise as the moon set, and then hiked back to our camp.
I miss Africa.

Today I'm grateful for Shark Girl.
Today is two years since our first date. She took me to a gloworm cave at midnight, with a waterfall flowing from a gap in the roof of the cave.
Clearly this is the right way to woo a faerie.
I'm so very grateful. She's awesome. I bought her a small chilli bush. Because flowers are... Dead. And chillis are tasty.
Shark Girl made a very tasty dinner.
I know it's meant to be three things, but it's been a very long weekend and I'm so exhausted. Besides, this is a big thing, so it counts.

Star Wars lipstick?
I totally understand Star Wars ALL THE THINGS...
I even realise that 35 years ago when the original trilogy came out, there was a load of merchandising, so it's hardly a new thing.

But limited edition Star Wars make up really feels wrong (and it's not marketed as cosplay, but just normal makeup, but 'Star Wars' themed.

And... Rey doesn't even get done up like this! She barely wears any makeup through the whole movie, which is one of the things I really love!! A freakin awesome kick ass female lead who is totally gorgeous with a natural look.

#spider

Eriophora biapicata

This garden spider that I found in my eucalyptus tree was well hidden wrapped around the small fork of some branches during the day but at night she spins a web which collects not only insects but also pollen which is a rich source of protein for her when she eats her web at the end of each night.
The spider recycles 90% of her web in making the next night's web so is very efficient in her use of energy indeed.

Yesterday a fellow #ingress agent popped over yesterday to bring me a gift - a custom made laser etched perspex agent tag :) even more unique, it's possibly the only green #resistance swag in the world.
Just a little thing, but I feel that little tingle of a smile. It's awesome to feel like there's a wider community out there who care about me, and I've got friends. I'm grateful. It's not easy being green.

More fun times - my car had a flat battery today (apparently Shark Girl didn't realise the interior lights don't all turn off automatically, and she was the last one to drive it... About a week ago. A week running an interior light leaves a car battery dead dead dead). No big deal, I've got roadside assistance premium membership... Only they can sometimes take an hour or two to arrive, so my housemates decided we can jump start it with cables from their spare battery. But it didn't work, so it was decided (to my trepidation) that we should try jump starting my car from their car.

In theory it's a logical plan. Only I park my car at the back of the house at the top of a steep muddy, rocky track, the only way to get to it was to push my car a bit and let it roll down the track a bit into the rainforest. Naturally it slipped in the mud, but thankfully didn't go over the edge into the Gully, so I'm grateful to the tree that broke the car's fall.
So there's a small ding and a scratch in my car. But I'm glad to have not rolled into the creek.

Eventually my housemate got his 4wd up and jump cables attached... But after half an hour we still couldn't get it started, gave up and I called the auto club anyway. Eventually the guy came out and he got my car started, but it took a double battery pack and several attempts.
Of course irony would have it that it was the same guy who came out a few weeks ago the last time shark Girl left a light on in the car and got a flat battery and it rolled into the pond.
Anyway, it's all sorted out, for which I'm grateful. And the whole debacle killed some time, which is what we were going out to do anyway.

Hope springs a kernel -- Denny Crane

Kidlet and her friend deigned to complain of boredom (!) so I suggested they make a cake. Because it will kill an hour, and at the end of it all they'll have a cake.
This was apparently the most incredible idea they'd ever heard!

(in their defence they'd planned a day at the beach and it's currently bucketing torrents of rain, and due to impending storm I unplugged the internet and all the tech things)

#GooglePhotos collage of my super awesome Breton Bonnet spirit hood made by +miri dunn, which only multiplies the awesome. I still wear it often and I still love it so much. And it's got a spoon built in!
Funny, most of these google photos flashbacks come up and I think 'wow is already been three years? I can't believe it's been that long!'... But with this one is the opposite. I think, really? Only 3 years? I know that's right, but I feel like I've always had this hood. I guess it was really made for me. :)
Also, damn, I'm really very green.

Simple things

1. Shark Girl bought me a beautiful green citronella candle. Because green, and candles and mosquito repellent properties. So I'm not slapping mozzies all evening, and that's nice.

2. Sharks! Just taking time to play with toys. They have claimed the rug, and called it This Land. Fun times :) just being silly

3. Laughing. Today kidlet decided that our big speckled hen Zoe looks like me, and even further, she is me - not a reincarnation, but me from the future; a future in which somehow we have the power to change into other animals and time travel, and for some reason my future self decided to use this power to turn into a chicken and come back in time to be my own protection. And I can't even prove her wrong. But it is hilarious.

Performance art raising awareness about self-hatred - level: Costume design
Kidlet and her friends are choreographing and putting together a performance for a local Arts Week show. They're doing mostly circus acrobatic stuff, and all their own costume design and sewing, combined with holding up placards with messages, all set to artistic music.
And the message of their performance is to talk about self harm, raise awareness about it and encourage other teens to seek help. Because it gets better.
They came up with the theme themselves, they're doing all their own choreography, set and costumes...
And yes, I'm damn proud.

Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel
Today feels utterly hopeless. I can't see the light at the end. I'm just trying to keep believing that there is one. So I'm grateful for holding onto blind faith.

So 3 things...
1. Classic Doctor Who. My NAS drive mysteriously stopped working so I lost virtually all my digital media. But I still have multiple backups of Doctor Who (and season 1 of Firefly). So I'll ignore yet another thing breaking that I can't afford to replace and the loss of the bulk of my collection, and focus on still having what I have.

2. I will be grateful for the sanctuary I have here in this place. I won't look too far into the future at the reality that we may very likely lose this home very soon and I have no idea what we'll do. But for as long as we're here, I will be ever grateful for it.

We couldn't find the chickens, usually at bed time they start milling around by the coop of their own accord. But this evening they were not to be found. After much searching, I nearly bashed my face into this guy hanging in the doorway to the henhouse.
No wonder the clever little dinosaurs had hidden in the rainforest somewhere.
I hope they survive the night.

I noticed two rainbow flags flying over different parts of the University of Cambridge today, and wondered what was up (I mean I know what the flag is for, just that they're not usually there so I was curious), and I found this: http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/Rainbow-flag-fly-Shire-Hall-county-plans-packed/story-28618678-detail/story.html

So 1) the flags worked because I totally didn't know it was LGBT history month, and...

I actually feel sleepy. It's not even 1am. I might be able to sleep.
That counts for 27 things.
I'm not going to risk missing my window to think of 3 things.
Lights out. Good night

Garden orb weaver grabbing a tasty snack
I was photographing this gorgeous spider, who had built the most magnificent web right outside my back door, when suddenly a moth flew into the web.
Within seconds the spider had raced over and wrapped up the meal - so quickly I didn't even get a chance to switch to video mode or get a decent shot of the bug before it became a #buggylunch

The USA isn't even the only country in the world whose official name starts with "The United States of" and it's only a small part of America, yet the world is expected to follow along in calling them "The US" like the other United States counties don't count, or "America", like the rest of the continent doesn't count. ... more »

Aftermath of the Tasmanian bush fires - this is what climate change looks like. This is system collapse.

The loss of these 1000 year old trees and cushion plants feels even more devastating given that it's world heritage listed wilderness that people fought so hard to protect 30 years ago. This forest probably isn't growing back.

Daily gratitude
1. I'm very grateful for having wifi in the house. I shall not be taking it for granted. Yes, it's an inconvenience to have to be constantly vigilant and unplug everything every time there's a hint of a thunderstorm, but I'm already used to being vigilant to move the cars if there's a storm rolling in lest we get flooded in, and we keep a good supply of clean water in canisters and non perishable food. All minor inconveniences, to be sure. But I also grateful for that stuff. Everything's a trade off. I get to live in the rainforest and have my internets.

2. I'm grateful the store we bought the dead router from just replaced it without undue hassle or fuss. It was only a few weeks old and it's spoons I don't have. So it's nice when something resolves quickly and easily.

3. I'm grateful for my opal. (referring to my... more »

3. I'm grateful for my opal. (referring to my post yesterday about green opals) - this is a picture of me wearing it, and being a black and white film photograph taken in 2002 and scanned circa 2005, you can't really see the detail of the opal. But it's a beautiful rock. And like I said, I kept it on me for all of my travels, kind of as a last resort. I figured if my situation ever got that desperate, I could sell it and get a couple hundred dollars - enough to get me safe.
In hindsight, there were a bunch of times my situation absolutely warranted using that rock as an emergency fund. But I never did. Somehow being in the middle of a situation never felt as bad as it is looking back (with the wisdom of years). regardless, I'm grateful for having had that safety net, even if I never used it.

I was 23 when this photo was taken - it's amazing how young I looked.

Because sharks are friendly, not the fearsome beasts the shock media likes to make them out to be. We just need to respect them and their place in the environment.

That magical moment...
Peeling off the plastic is Kidlet's favourite thing. It drives her crazy that I'm the opposite - I leave the protective plastic on everything. My laptop was more than two years old before I finally pulled the plastic off the back. My phone still has the plastic around the edges for about six months.
But Kidlet lives for peeling the plastic off new tech.

We got a replacement wifi router today and kidlet was extra awesome - she even cleaned the bathroom, so I let her have the honour of peeling the plastic.
She savoured it like it was the world's last bowl of gold-plated ice cream.

And there's another storm rolling in so we already unplugged all the things.

Carpet python - guarding my car keys
Also my drinking water filter.

Remember when we snake-proofed the chicken coop and I joked that the chook shed was more snake proof than my bedroom?

Well I just went to fill up my water bottle before smuggling into bed, and I almost didn't turn on the kitchen light. Glad I did. (The light switch is about six inches from the snake's head)
Coz I was surprised to see this little guy curled up around the water filter, keeping a watchful eye over my car keys.

And when I say "little", well, he's little by our standards and hard to tell when he's all curled up but I think he's around the 150cm (5 foot) long range.

He didn't seen to mind a few quick snaps but he started being unhappy about the flash. So I gently refilled the water filter and turned out the light. Maybe he'll fix... more »

1. Fresh human loves snuggleshark. It's adorable and it autoawesomed

2. Pork chops.

3. I still have data on my phone so the dead modem and dead computer aren't the end of the world. But I'm pretty sure it's a sign of the end of days. I miss wifis

And who am I kidding? I don't feel positive or grateful at all. I feel angry and frustrated and helpless and overwhelmed at all the things. I can't handle the pain and I can't get to see the osteopath who kinda helps.
But adorable fresh human smiling at snuggleshark is a good thing.

Okay seriously, what the actual fuck!?
Universe, you're clearly messing with me.
Remember a few weeks ago my modem/router died... And it was plugged into a surge protector that technically had a warranty that will replace it but it may take weeks, so I bought an interim router...
Well the new router died today. While plugged into the new replacement surge protector that the company sent me already to replace the previous one.
I'm still waiting on the replacement of my original router.
And another splitter died.
My computer is dead.
I just can't even.
Halp!

I'm grateful for kidlet cooking dinner. Her culinary skills are being better and better. She made gnocchi with a nice garlicky tomato sauce with lots of fresh herbs. Nom

I'm grateful for successfully adulting. Today I managed to complete more errands than I can count, and I even had to set alarms and get up in the middle of the night (7am!) and I didn't get home till late. So I accomplished many many things and I (hopefully) won't have to leave the rainforest again for a few days. I know tomorrow I'll be paying for all the spoons I used today.

I'm grateful for having an awesome mechanic. Seriously, he's worth his weight in gold. Fixed up my TARDIS, got me parts at cost price and only billed me 1/4 hour labour (so barely the time it took to fit the replacement part, not counting actually going to the repco to pick up the part that he... more »

I was almost lured to another mechanic that's a little more conveniently located and comes highly recommended and has great reviews. They quoted me some 3x what my guy charged and said it would take a few days. My awesome mechanic fixed it in a couple of hours, with no booking ahead.
This means I can never move out of the area, because once you find a good mechanic, nothing else matters.
