KQED SCIENCE371,107Join @100526514195087244555 for a Hangout On Air on black holes! You'll be able to watch the live discussion right here on our Event page. Please feel free to post your questions for our panelists on this page and we'll do our best to get them answered during our Hangout.  Black holes are some of the most mysterious and misunderstood objects in the universe. Since the confirmation of their existence roughly 40 years ago, they've captured the imagination of astronomers, the public and sci-fi authors who have helped give these invisible giants a bad rap. Join our discussion which will separate fact from fiction and hear the latest developments with NuSTAR, a black hole hunter launched in June by @102371865054310418159  which is swiftly scanning the skies for these space oddities. We have some special guests lined up, including: Moderator: KQED QUEST TV producer @107722122431088291351  *Ben Burress*, Staff Astronomer, @111818234279875467079  *William Craig*, Instrument Manager, NuSTAR NASA Mission (http://goo.gl/pQM48) *Alex Filippenko*, Professor of Astronomy, @115631634705580814770  *Fiona Harrison*, Principal Investigator, NuSTAR NASA Mission *Watch this trailer embedded on our event page for an upcoming QUEST TV story on black holes!*Black Holes: Objects of Attraction - An Astronomy Round Table Discussion2012-09-25 18:30:00412

7 year old girl, Zea, ain't got no time for #homophobic preachers
(。◕‿◕。)
Zea stood firm in the face of #hate over the weekend at a celebration of the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage. When a preacher began ranting at her through a microphone, little Zea quietly waved her rainbow flag and never backed down.

Updated cautionary signs for the Tim Hunt scientific era

As the intermittent output from solar and wind further threatens the stability of the German electricity grid, a new market is springing up to profit from this: businesses selling electricity which can be quickly patched in to compensate for the gaps left by solar arrays and wind turbines.

Without these increasingly more often and rather expensive interventions, Germany would be suffering frequent blackouts, as its solar and wind sources are simply unable to cope with the realities of a national power grid.

Forget the sunny image Germany has been trying to create of a nation powered by solar and wind. The real backbone of the German energy industry is coal, providing most of the electricity used in Germany, followed by the remaining nuclear plants, nuclear power imported from France and finally by a bit of PV solar and wind energy.

Strip mining is continuing today in German coal mines and will continue to do so for the coming decades. Razing down ancient villages and towns for the sake of expanding these mines, there's no saying when Germany will finally be able to stop its addiction to coal. Solar and wind seem unlikely to ever do so, even in the long term.

While it was originally reported that China's Moon rover Yutu had ceased functioning shortly after landing due to a malfunction, Chinese controllers received a signal from the rover as communications were restored. While the rover is incapacitated and cannot move any more, most of its instruments including its ground-penetrating radar are still functional and are being used to perform science on the Moon's surface, leading to very interesting findings.

Sadly, due to the earlier malfunction, Yutu is unable to properly shut itself down to prepare for the night, leading to its instruments being damaged a little bit more with every night. Every day may be the rover's last one.

Analysing the claims being made in a recent New York Times article on Iran's supposed strides towards a nuclear weapon of its own show that said claims are either sorely mistaken, uninformed or misleading at best.

It's both another worrying chapter in the trend of bad scientific journalism, as well as a dangerous element which could further destabilize the shaky relationship between Iran and the US. I doubt anyone needs to be reminded of the fictional 'evidence' produced by the US in the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Journalism is a big responsibility. Taking it not very seriously like the New York Times has done here can have disastrous consequences.

Cases like these simply serve to underline again why capital punishment is a terrible idea. If there's no incentive to even ensure that innocent people don't end up in prison, then what's the incentive to ensure that innocent people don't get executed?

Justice systems are problematic in all countries, but this level of corruption as seen in the US places it among the worst implementations today.
