European Photo111,169Come join +European Photo  #EuropeanPhoto  and +Charles Lupica +Janusz Brakoniecki +Jean-Louis LAURENCE +Manuella Betaille +Manuel Votta +Michael Muraz and +Susanne Ramharter for our first event. Please tag your images with #EuropeanAutumn  and #EuropeanPhotography  - no other tag is needed but you can mention one or more curators if you like. This event is for sharing images that say "autumn in Europe" or "Autumn festival".  In Europe many of the biggest festivals of the year take place in September, October, and Novemeber.  In September and October there are many "harvest festivals" such as the Fete des Vendanges in Neuchatel Switzerlland or perhaps you went to the Octoberfest in Germany?  Both Europa Parc and Disneyland Paris put on extensive Halloween themes.  So this weekend, Friday to Sunday, pleass join our event and share with us your images of autumn in Europe.  We would especially like to see images that show autumn in classic European cites or landscapes, like this image of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Lavaux, Switzerland.Image credit: +Charles Lupica © All rights reserved.European Color and Festivals2012-10-26 00:00:00377

Justin Hill22,577338 Photographers :- Due to a post I saw float past in my stream today I am suddenly aware of the fact that I have not shared any of my circles for a very long time. So to rectify that here's my circle of photographers. If you are missing from this circle you are most probably in my other photography circle that is HDR based...if you are also missing from that one then I am sorry as I simply cannot add everyone that crosses my path or stream. Enjoy...2013-10-11 14:09:1333813311

Peter Tom12,449The plan a few weeks ago was to begin sharing my favorite images in groups of 10 for the photographers in my circles.  I have finished the groupings and will begin sharing the images from those groupings this week.I'm sorry for this delay - real life has taken over yet again.2013-06-22 22:56:08308641696
Max Huijgen46,779The 100 most relevant people on G+ you really should check out. It´s impossible to select the people which contributes most to my experience on G+ so I´ll let Google do the dirty work. These 98 people (and 2 pages I helped founding) are the most relevant ones according to Google´s circle sort so they deserve a spot in the Friday sun.  If you´re not in it, be assured I really enjoy your posts and/or comments. I meet a lot of great people here, but this self imposed limit to 100 is just to make it easier for others to circle the whole bunch and check them out.2013-06-21 19:32:111001221459
Peter Tom11,733I've added all photographers from my various circles into one circle. Please feel free to share as you wish.Over the next while, I will be sharing my favorite images from each of you - in groups of 10.Thank you for your participation in these circles - without you they would be meaningless.2013-05-26 02:00:26318523673

J. Rae Chip0Had to add 2.... sorry.Back in the day I used to share a circle a month, with completely random inclusion criteria.I'm reviving that now. March's criteria is people who I caught being nice to someone else. This could mean they were nice to me, or I saw them going out of their way to be nice to someone else. I just like nice people, and I think they deserve to be rewarded. So here you go.(If you're not in here, it's not that I don't think you're nice.... I left out a few people who I have shared in circle after circle after circle..... gotta give other people a chance too!)2013-03-14 06:07:023213012

What do you think of this analogy of crap content being the equivalent of fast food for the brain, and that its effects are similarly worrying?

“Driven by a desire for more profits, and for wider audiences, our media companies look to produce information as cheaply as possible. As a result, they provide affirmation and sensationalism over balanced information. […]

Just as food companies learned that if they want to sell a lot of cheap calories, they should pack them with salt, fat, and sugar—the stuff that people crave—media companies learned that affirmation sells a lot better than information. Who wants to hear the truth when they can hear that they’re right?”

Vodafone officially reveals what we've been suspecting all along

Kudos to Vodafone for formally telling the world that this invasion of privacy is happening, and I hope they help set something larger in motion here.

Chick Magnets

Good day all!

Puns are wonderful. I really love it when someone takes it far enough to actually create a product out of one. I love it even more when someone can buy you a gift like this without feeling awkward about it :)

The box came with 6 magnets and a little book with "Things chicks like". Each page of the mini book includes a cute illustration of a chick doing something they like: "Terri likes going to Museums." or "Brian likes playing jazz."

Wishing you all a lovely week :)

Yes, we took the ‪#‎IceBucketChallenge‬. Yes it's not the right thing for a cynical dumbass like me to do.

But I did it. I did it together with my teammates at +Switch Digital.

I did it because sitting on a sofa and criticising people who are doing good never changed the world. It never changed anything at all. So to hell with it all.

Do it, donate, whatever, just do something. Even if it just makes one person smile, then it's worth doing.

The blog post at the link below explains my feelings about it. Feel free to comment, share your experiences, criticise or add to it :)

And this is what I found on my monitor when I walked into the office this morning.

Mixed messages from my colleagues - who wish me a happy birthday but also threw in an insult ;)

Kudos to +Ed Muscat Azzopardi for creating the GIF after the fact.

And no, despite my best efforts, I did not manage to work with all the stickies on my monitor.

Most of the people who read this post probably prefer living on Google+. There are too many advantages to list, this network seems to work much better for so many reasons.

But we also have to earn a living. My career path includes social media marketing, and part of this, quite naturally, involves helping my clients thrive on Facebook.

Malta is a small country. Facebook thrives most in a local context, and over here local and national is a very blurred line, which is probably why no other social network has really taken off.

Anyway, this blog post goes some way into explaining why Facebook reach is taking a nosedive.

Do you manage any Facebook pages? Have you felt the decline of organic reach too?

Organic reach is declining, there is no denying it. This is happening for people and brands alike. Facebook finally spoke about it, we analyse their take on it.___Most of the people who read this post probably prefer living on Google+. There are too many advantages to list, this network seems to work much better for so many reasons.

Vodafone officially reveals what we've been suspecting all along

Kudos to Vodafone for formally telling the world that this invasion of privacy is happening, and I hope they help set something larger in motion here.

The company said wires had been connected directly to its network and those of other telecoms groups, allowing agencies to listen to or record live conversations and, in certain cases, track the whereabouts of a customer.

There is a very fine line between security and invasion of privacy - and this is usually crossed by people who want to abuse of their power.

I'm also in favour of giving up some privacy in favour of more security, however, at the very least, I expect this to be done transparently. I expect to know exactly what this information is being used for, and what we're being protected from.

...

Vodafone's group privacy officer, Stephen Deadman, said: "These pipes exist, the direct access model exists.

"We are making a call to end direct access as a means of government agencies obtaining people's communication data. Without an official warrant, there is no external visibility. If we receive a demand we can push back against the agency. The fact that a government has to issue a piece of paper is an important constraint on how powers are used."

....

The Malta Perspective
In Albania, Egypt, Hungary, India, Malta, Qatar, Romania, South Africa and Turkey, it is unlawful to disclose any information related to wiretapping or interception of the content of phone calls and messages including whether such capabilities exist.

Shame on the Maltese government for being on this list. Shame on both parties who have been in power over the past few years. One party implemented it, the other allowed it to stand.

&

It shows that Malta is one of the most spied on nations in Europe. The former British protectorate has a tiny population of 420,000, but last year Vodafone alone processed 3,773 requests for metadata.

Interesting apparent change in tack by Facebook

We all know that children are on Facebook anyway - some with and some without the knowledge of parents. Might as well build in a control mechanism for parents.

I must admit that I found the whole slender man stabbing issue disturbing, but it would have scared my shoes off if I was a parent.

So please, change channel. Stop reading and watching crap about the dysfunctional lives of others. Stop giving these idiots even more power.

Smile

I can't say I don't love the subject in this photo, or that I don't love her smile, because I'd be lying about both, but that's not the purpose of sharing this picture here. I did that, sentiment and all, on Facebook, where most of the people know the both of us in person.

I'm sharing this picture here from a purely photographic point of view. I borrowed a prime lens from a friend of mine and remembered what a real pleasure it is to shoot with longer primes. This one in particular is a Canon 100mm f2.0, but the one I owned (and hope to fix eventually) is an 85mm f1.8.

The super-shallow depth of field was something I had forgotten, next time I use this lens I'll have to change focusing to the centre spot, focus where I want to and re-compose. The number of wasted shots I had in this set was stupid. Then again I managed to get a shot... more »

As some of you might know, I started a business about a year ago, and have been working very hard at it since. I employed someone about four months ago and will be adding my next employee tomorrow.

I've outgrown trying to keep track of projects on papers and in rudimentary excel sheets and have been looking around for a tool to help me:

   -> one off jobs
-> pre-defined sets of hours per month on a particular job (like a retainer)
-> large, complex projects that might involve multiple members of our team and various freelancers

I've been looking around for software to help me with this, but most of the time I encounter the same problem. The software I have found is either too complicated and focused on sales (I don't really need an advanced CRM element) yet - I'm the only one who handles sales and I don't really have problems coping with leads etc (yet) - or too project-management focused and doesn't help me out on the financial side.

I'd like something that can help me figure out:
- What quotes I have worked on
- What projects I have going on (their progress is handled in Trello, we're kinda sorted that way)
- What they were quoted at
- How much I'm paying freelancers (if any) for the project when I get it,
- and therefore how much I'm earning, how much I'm paying, how profitable jobs/clients are...

I don't really need the accounting side of things because invoicing/debt collection etc is handled by the mothership. I just need to make sure that once a project is done I get the information over to the accounts guy.

I'm not sure if anyone out there can help me, maybe you've tried something yourself, maybe you have used something similar? Am I looking for something that doesn't exist, or am I overlooking a very obvious solution?

P.S. apologies in advance for the notification. I try to use them sparingly!___

Good day to all

We hit the streets of NYC in a very foggy and rainy day. Rather than being deterred by this, I tried to make the best of it. I, for one, am not used to seeing buildings vanishing into low-lying clouds.

This is probably one of New York's most famous buildings (well there are too many famous buildings to count there, but anyway...) the Public Library. It really stands out as the only low building in blocks and blocks of high-rises.

Peace

Some of the photos I took last weekend were used by +Sarah Micallef in her blog post:

I must agree with her that the holiday was the definition of peace. It was really short and we did quite a lot of things in it, but we really managed to get away from all the stress and panic of work life.

As an aside, I also aim to post some other photos I took during the trip, but I need to find time to organise them...

Well, she's counting the 7 things she's learnt in 7 years, but it would be practically impossible to quantify the number of things that +Maria Popova has taught us with +Brain Pickings

I'd love to summarise what she said, but I would never do it justice, so head off and read the article. Then subscribe to her newsletter, like the page on Facebook, stick it in your RSS reader, whatever, but make sure you read it every week.

Finally, out of the 7, the one I need to find more time for is:

"Build pockets of stillness into your life. Meditate. Go for walks. Ride your bike going nowhere in particular."

I was doing this regularly and need to start doing it again. The difference it makes in your life is incredible.

"Il-King" (The king)

Good morning all

Yesterday morning I went out to one of Malta's most popular car-boot sales, which is held every Sunday morning just outside the old city of Birgu.

Visiting a car-boot sale is always an enlightening experience for many reasons.

First there is the human element: I can't think of a single in Malta place in which you can see such a wide variety of people of interesting people, including this man, who calls himself "Il-King" (the king). He was not very happy that I was taking a photo of him because he's usually photographed with his hat on, it's his trademark.

It was also very a very productive morning in terms of photography, I managed to get a few good shots in.

Last but not least it was great for +Sarah Micallef, who found quite a few things to use in her up-cyclling endeavour.

You can see some more photos I took on her blog post here: http://www.thesecretrose.com/2013/09/the-return-of-the-perfect-sunday-morning/

I wish you all a lovely week!___

Pancakes, or how I learnt to bring the joy back into photography

For some reason, Summer always seems to be a very quiet period for me and photography. I guess it must be the extreme heat on the island or maybe the fact that the social calendar becomes so full. Or it could be a combination of both.

Whatever the case, I slow down and then find it hard to re-start my passion. Once it comes back, it comes back with a vengeance, and that is what I've been experiencing over the past few weeks.

I offered to help my girlfriend out with setting up her blog on a self-hosted domain (she was on blogspot before). I aim to build a full-fledged site soon enough, but in order to do so we need some more photography.

So here goes, a new project. Building her site should be fun,  but taking photos of all the things she does on a regular basis should be even more of a challenge, but great because I have a constant muse.

And, as you can see from the photo below, I also benefit from the job directly. I got to eat the pancakes after I photographed them :D

And if you want to read more about the pancakes, you can do so here: http://www.thesecretrose.com/2013/09/a-new-home-a-little-housekeeping-pancakes/ - but if you do visit, take the time to see some of her stunning creations.

Wishing you all a good day :)___

Shoes

Good morning all,

Just back from (yet another) vacation in Sicily. I know I end up going there far too frequently (it was my third time this year), but I really love the place. There is so much to do there and it is a brilliant holiday for us because we don't feel the need to visit every landmark or see every village. We just go there to chill out, eat some lovely food and forget about the world for a bit.

We were staying on my parents' boat in Marina Di Ragusa and this shot was taken as we were walking to shore on the pontoons. My sister and my girlfriend both had funky shoes, the light was fantastic so I made them stop, Got down on my belly and shot this from floor level. As you can imagine, they were both pretty amused.

Wishing you all a lovely week ahead!

Summer vibes
Good morning and happy Monday!

Haven't posted photos in ages, here's one I took and edited on my phone yesterday...

I'm hoping to start posting more regularly. I know I keep saying it, but it becomes harder and harder to find the time I need tio shoot, edit and post properly, so I usually end up not posting at all. I need to take a leaf out of my ex-boss' book and stop letting perfect getting in the way of good.

Wishing you all a great week!

Hi all :)

I'm working on a microstock project and would really appreciate it if you could take 5 minutes to answer this short survey about microstock sites.

In the meantime, as thanks, I'll be taking 30 requests for objects to be photographed around the Maltese Islands. The requests can be as vague or specific as you want, from any genre pf photography - I promise I'll do my best to fulfil them to the best of my capabilities.

Summer evenings

Got this shot half way through a commercial shoot for a client of ours. I knew it would be useless for them since they're obsessed with showing product, but I love the way it turned out.

And this shot reminds me that we're moving into that period of the year where it is far too hot to survive outside during the day, but the evenings become delicious.

Long live the Summer!*

Social media. The constant dilemma.

Is it a waste of time? is it a community builder? Is it a good tool for driving traffic to your website, and if it is, is it driving the right quality traffic?

I'm still not convinced either way. I think that most social media are great community builders and help for top of the funnel awareness, but direct conversions to sales mainly work with very specific (mainly uber-local) companies.

The one thing I'm pretty sure of is that, no matter to what extent, you need a presence. If you are looking into it, this is a good checklist to use before starting off or to check against if you're already in process and want to see you're doing all you can.

Super detailed panorama...

I never realised how much resolution the Samsung Galaxy S4 can really handle until I tried shooting a panorama shot with the native camera app.

This was on a beach in Marsala, in the North-west of Sicily.

The beach itself is pretty mundane, as you can see it sits in front of high rise towers and is more of a low-tech fishing harbour than anything else, but I will be shooting more panoramas in the future, because they really give you a good feeling of the place you were in when travelling.

”In six months I have lost a 13-year love but kept a great friend, I have fallen in love again, I changed jobs, I sold my house and I’m living in the fourth different house since.

I’ve decided to come out of a barren period of writing by describing my twenties, with a special focus on the roller coaster of emotions that I went through over the past 6 months.

Positivity is a great thing. I remember reading a book about an old lady who was being picked on by a troll. He’d curdle her milk and she’d make sour cream sweets. He’d turn her flowers into thistles and she’d use them for cushions. Life is really what you make of it, and here I am, trying to make the sweetest and most refreshing lemonade possible out of the lemons handed to me.

Caution. The post is long and quite personal, but I’m hoping it is worth your while reading.

Thirty.
The story of my twenties. And the past 6 months.

Retrospect is a great thing. Hindsight is an even better one. They say that in hindsight you’d take wiser decisions. Fuck’em.

I’m in love. I’m in love with this incredibly beautiful girl. It seems insane, and rather scary, to say it, but it feels like she loves me back too. As I write this I’m sitting in the garden of a little rented house in Naxxar, a relatively little village in Malta. Tonight we’re having friends over for a barbecue.

Seven months ago I invited the same group of friends over for drinks at my house. In Balzan, another little village in the centre of Malta. It was a lovely house that I co-owned. And I was hosting drinks there with my wife. Last week I was helping my (soon to be ex-) wife and her girlfriend move the last remaining items from the house in Balzan.

I have just travelled past an age milestone (turned 30) at the end of one of the most tumultuous six months of my life. One of my brothers described my recent history as something only Quentin Tarantino could pull off. Maybe he’s right. Or maybe life throws spanners in everyone’s wheels and we just don’t get to hear about them that much.

Six months ago my life seemed to be relatively straightforward. I was happily married to a girl I had been going out with since I was 16. I was in a steady job, getting some work done on the side whenever time allowed. I was writing regularly and uploading a photo on Google Plus and Facebook every day. I had a close circle of friends which was relatively firmly set in stone. I knew where I was, and I was pretty sure where I was going.

I had started my twenties pretty much like everybody else around me. I was at university, doing quite well, but never really taking it seriously. My parents brought me up thinking that results are not as important as living life, because at the end of the day it is your attitude to life that counts. I got some part time work done, was active in our course’s association - president for a couple of years. I was going steady with the girl I had been going out with for a few years.

Work life
In my second year at university a friend put me in contact with a friend of a friend and we hooked up to discuss some potential business dealings. Originally I was meant to help him out with handling a magazine he was trying to publish for someone else. Things progressed, and within a year or two (before I was done from university), we were in partnership and we were buying off the title from the old publisher. The magazine took off beautifully, we increased its circulation drastically. Started off another few magazines and had seven employees by the end of it all.

The original magazine, which was a boating publication, always remained our flagship title, and even gave birth to a spin-off title, a boating insert with Malta’s top newspaper. But things change. My partner moved away to Ireland for personal reasons. Splitting the company seemed to be the obvious option, but then one of Malta’s largest publishing houses came knocking on our door. It seemed like the blessing we were waiting.

So we sold off the company. Boom. But all that I knew was still in my head. As part of the deal, the new publisher wanted me to be the editor of the magazine for a couple of years. I could edit a boating magazine in my sleep. I was paid decently to do the job and basically did not really need to do any other work at the time. I sat prettily for six months, doing very little work and enjoying my time catching up on the life I had not really lived for the previous 4 years of insane publishing which included 80 hour shifts with micronaps at the office on a regular basis.

After 6 months someone sent me a clipping from a local paper. There was a vacancy for a magazine editor. I read the description and realised they really wanted a publisher, not an editor. I went for the meeting feeling as cocky as ever. I knew pretty well that I could do the job better than anyone else around. When I ran my own publications, at different stages in the month I’d handle (or help out with) every aspect of the process, from content to photography, sales to printing, design to layout.

I got the job, employed a team, and set up another great publication (if I may say so myself). But two years later I started getting ants in my pants. I had been in publishing forever. Even my part time jobs at school and university had been in publishing. I had studied computers as my secondary area at university. So I thought I should move into IT somehow.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine, who decided to send in my CV to a friend of his who worked at a US behemoth of an IT company which has its marketing department in Malta. After a couple of meetings I landed a job there. Up to six months ago I was working there, super happy in the environment and learning all there is to learn about the IT world and online marketing.

I was also doing quite a bit of writing on the side. I wrote for a few online publications, contributed to a friend’s IT blog and in October last year I published a specialised study of the cloud computing business. It included interviews with giants in the industry and was picked up by media all over the world. By the first week of December I had been asked to publish a summary on Wired and had my work quoted by Forbes. Not too shabby for a guy stuck in the middle of the Mediterranean sea.

Personal life
As I already suggested, I moved into my twenties going steady and deeply in love with a girl I had met at school. We did everything together, she even worked with me on the magazines. She kept the place running smoothly, she designed when she needed to design and wrote when she needed to write. She dealt with clients brilliantly.

When we were 23 years old we decided to start looking for a home. We had been together for ages and it seemed like the next logical step. After seeing about 50 properties, we finally found an apartment and were prepared to buy it. But our notary was not happy with the original deed, so she advised us not to buy it. So we moved on. Within a week we had fallen in love with a little house in Balzan. We bought it on the spot. Since we had a house sorted we decided the time was right to commit our love and get married. We organised a super quick wedding at my parents’ place and in September of 2007, when we were both just 24, we got married and moved into our house in Balzan.

We did so much together. It was a great relationship. We were everything to each other. We were lovers, we were siblings and we were best friends. We trusted each other with everything blindly and had a great time travelling all over the world together. That’s really about it. It seemed like the ideal relationship. We were the couple people looked at when they wanted to describe stability. We’d never argue, we’d never fight; we were what appeared to be the perfect match.

The past six months
Fast forward to December 2012. We celebrated our 13th anniversary on a Friday. We went out to dinner at this fantastic fish place. Shared a lovely meal and then went out to meet a friend of mine. We are both great sports when it comes to going out. We enjoyed the night out, but she appeared to be a bit distant.

Over the past few months she had started losing a bit of weight. She seemed to be concerned most of the time. Every time I’d ask what’s going on she’d say that her work was getting at her. I know she had nearly left her job a few months earlier so I thought nothing much of it. I started looking around for potential jobs for her to apply for. I also started creating projects we could work on together, so at least they would keep her mind off things.

But there was more to it. She was still not looking happy. We had just come back from a group holiday in Paris and throughout the trip she was never really with us. On the Tuesday after our anniversary I spoke to her again. She was not in a good place mentally. She told me she was questioning everything around her. It was the first time we had discussed the issue and I asked a direct question: “Does this include us?” She nodded.

The next day we took the car out. I dropped the roof, even though it was December and freezing weather. We drove for two hours. Stopped at a beach and walked along the beach. We didn’t really speak, we didn’t need to. We just held each other.

Thursday went by in a blur, I was all over the place, feeling completely lost and not really knowing what to do. On Friday, after work, I had a work do and she said she was too tired to join. So I mustered the courage and we spoke again. I asked her what was wrong. I told her I loved her and that anything she did or will do will be OK in my books. She had not done anything, but was she was falling in love with someone else. Falling in love in a way she had never felt for me.

I said it was OK. There is nothing much I felt I could do in this situation. Even though I loved her madly, part of loving someone includes knowing when to set them free when they need it. I would never want to be in a relationship with someone against their will. I told her to get up and go out and meet her. I’d go to my work do alone, no problem. So I went out, stayed sober, and after my work do I met one of my closest friends and told him about it. I remember it clearly, we were standing on the terrace of another friend’s house and I was telling him all about it. He happened to be one of the few people who knew the other girl, and gave me a raving review.

We spent the rest of the week discussing our love and the way forward, but there was really nothing much we could do about it. We loved each other. We still do. But we were no longer in love. We were like siblings or best friends, and that’s not enough to keep you in a relationship with someone.

It was hard. It was very hard, but I knew that my only option was to set her free and be as supportive as I possibly could. I knew it was hard for her too. She was coming out of a relationship that everyone expected her to be in. She was moving into a relationship that is very hard for people to accept in such a conservative community. I did the very best I could. I did not try to stop her. I made it very clear to all of my friends and family that if they loved me, they should accept her and help her out in the process.

She told me that rationally I was the best husband she could ever expect to have, but sometimes emotions fumble with our heartstrings more strongly than reason can ever hope to. Love is not something you should ever deny anyone.

I paced. I thought. I wrote poems. I wrote an emotional piece thanking her for the time we spent together and posted it for the world to see. It was scary, but it helped me. Writing always does. Writing this is helping me again.

One of the things that helped me most along the way over these weeks was a book I had proofread for a friend a few months earlier. In it she described the loss of a loved one, her partner had died a few months earlier. Though devastated, she moved on by focusing on the beautiful time they had spent together. Thinking about the things they would not do together would only drag her back. I feel that getting to proofread this book at the time I did was a true blessing. It prepared me for a loss I could never have predicted.

I moved out to give her the space she needed. I went to live at my brother’s house. He was in Spain with his wife for a month or so, so I moved in there to find some space. I started walking every morning. It was my kind of meditation. It was the space that I needed to find myself, find my thoughts and be alone for a while. I stopped writing and I could no longer really take photos I loved. I was drying up.

My brother came home before his wife and I lived with him for a spell too. I went out with him a bit, made some new friends, and planned a skiing holiday with them, even though I had only known them for a week or so. During this time I made friends with someone who was also just out of a relationship. She grabbed me by the hair (metaphorically, since I have none), and dragged me all over the island doing a hundred different things to keep my mind off my thoughts. She was a great help and probably one of the biggest reasons I recovered so quickly. She was just the friend I needed at the time that I needed it.

Then I made the best decision I made over the past six months. I decided to move in with another brother and his wife. They live in Dingli, a remote village set on Malta’s highest cliffs. It is relatively far away from everywhere else on the island and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. I walked all over the cliffs and the countryside around the area every morning. But the real gems were the people in the house. My brother and his wife took me under their wings. I always had a lot of respect for both of them, but over the past five months I learnt what great people they really are. They became my parents. They became my best friends. They became my source of solace and advice. They became my endless source of entertainment. They spurred me on.

As if what was happening in my life was not enough, half way through all this I had a car accident. I stopped by the side of the road to make a phone call and a drunk driver rammed my car from the back. He left the country the same day and I never managed to get an insurance claim out of it. It was probably the best time to have such an accident, because it paled to insignificance. I just shrugged it off. Luckily my brother kept on proving what a great guy he is and lent me a car he was not using until I get mine fixed.

Yet another brother came knocking at my door (I have three of them, plus a sister). He said that his company needed a digital marketing arm and were looking for someone to spearhead it. I’d be a partner in the agency if I accepted. Even though I was happy in the job I was in, this seemed to be an offer that was too good to refuse. I thought about it a lot. I discussed the offer with people whose opinion I valued, including family, friends, a few colleagues and my former wife. Everyone was of the opinion that this was not really an offer I should refuse.

I had a holiday planned with my sister in March, so I decided that the week away from all the hustle and bustle of life to ponder on it. The holiday was fantastic, we got to see The Gaslight Anthem again (the same band we had travelled to Paris to see in November), and met all the band members. I thought a lot about life and the job, and thought that this would be the perfect time for another change. So I resigned the day I came back and took up the new role a couple of weeks later.

Then something happened. I was not really expecting it. It is still far too close to go in all the intricate details, but over the past few months I started spending a lot of time with an old friend of mine. Initially we’d just hang out as friends, but soon enough it became quite clear to us that something else was brewing. We were spending more and more time together and things just progressed from there. We were falling in love, even though we did not want to admit it.

I was discussing it with her recently. It was scary. Falling in love is not an easy thing when you’ve just had your heart broken. Opening your heart up to someone new feels like giving someone else the opportunity to break it. But I feel that it is much more of a loss to not open up in order to avoid the risk of loss, than it would be to risk the pain of another loss. If my reaction to losing a love were to never love again, then the damage would have been devastating.

So here I am. Falling in love and not worrying about the potential risk. Giving it everything as if I have never loved before. As if I have never been hurt before. I have to admit that there are moments in which I am terrified, but overcoming them only strengthens my resolve.

I only had one unresolved issue left. When you think about it, I was lucky enough to have the most civilised breakups possible, but I never felt prepared to meet my former wife and her girlfriend together. I knew it had to happen at some point, but my girlfriend insisted that it would help me greatly if I could get over this. Goes to show what a great girl she really is.

Then the perfect opportunity knocked and I took it. The week we were selling the house we both needed to move quite a few things out of it. I had moved most of my stuff, but my ex-wife and her girlfriend needed help. I offered to help them out, did so and made contact for the first time. It was much easier than I had feared it would be and I was really glad I took the step. She seems like a really lovely girl and in the future I hope to get to know her better.

So by the end of it, in six months I have lost a 13-year love but kept a great friend, I have fallen in love again, I changed jobs, I sold my house and I’m living in the fourth different house since then. I met my former wife’s girlfriend, made some great new friends and learnt a lot about life. There were periods that were incredibly challenging. There were others that were rewarding. And there were others still that I’m still trying to understand.

Sometimes I sit and think about all that has happened. All the change in my life. All the things I will never experience in the way I expected to. All the new things I will experience. And I’m happy. It might sound fatalistic, heck, it probably is, but I do believe that everything happens for a reason. It might not be immediately apparent. It might not be what you were expecting or what you were wishing for. But if you open your heart and mind to change and deal with it in the best way possible, every challenge can be turned into an opportunity.

I’d like to think I took the spanners that were thrown into my wheels and tuned the engine to perform better instead of letting them stop me. And if you really want a view in hindsight: I stand by every decision I took in my twenties. They took me to places I would never have imagined I’d go to. Enjoying the sunset...

Good morning, and apologies for the super long absence.

I really need to get back to shooting and posting more regular updates, and this here is my start. I definitely won't go back to posting once a day right away, I need to build that stamina back up, and Summer is really not the right time to do so.

But anyway, here goes. A shot I took a few weeks ago, I was out walking and shooting a set of photos for a specific (personal) project. The sunset was not really what I had on my mind, but when I saw these kids fooling about exactly in line with the sunset I could not resist the opportunity...

Come right in...

A gate which lies along my current morning route. Should be moving away from Dingli soon enough because my own place is nearly done. I'll miss the company, but I'll also miss the lovely countryside and lovely views!

The new layout: I think I like it...

It looks and feels much sleeker, like a social network from the future.

And below is a song most of the people in my circles will not really appreciate, but it describes my sentiments precisely.

Hi all, apologies for the super-long absence. My main computer is dead and I haven't had the time to fix it. That means I'm not exactly able to download and edit photos from my SLR, which therefore makes my morning photos impossible.

I've been dipping my toes in the mobile photography pool lately and try posting a photo a day on instagram while I wait for my computer to be fixed (or until I find a way to get photos off my camera and onto my laptop).

In the meantime, here are a few notes about the mobile photography experience.

Wishing you all a lovely day!

Rows

Good morning all!

In terms of weather, springtime is in and out of Malta at the moment. The crops, however, keep on growing well enough from what I can see.

My morning route takes me through quite a bit of fields and it is really nice to see the different crops in various stages of growth.

These are rows of onions, all perfectly lined up and probably close to being uprooted.

Wishing you a lovely Tuesday :D

Chick Magnets

Good day all!

Puns are wonderful. I really love it when someone takes it far enough to actually create a product out of one. I love it even more when someone can buy you a gift like this without feeling awkward about it :)

The box came with 6 magnets and a little book with "Things chicks like". Each page of the mini book includes a cute illustration of a chick doing something they like: "Terri likes going to Museums." or "Brian likes playing jazz."

Wishing you all a lovely week :)

Blossom (Oh Jupiter, I missed you (5/5))

Good morning and happy Friday all!

The last photo in this mini-series is probably one of the areas the Jupiter-6 excels in most (and is the hardest to use at).

Closeups of small objects are incredibly hard because the depth of field afforded at this proximity and aperture is minimal, probably just around a centimeter (half an inch).

The payoff, however, makes the effort worth it. The subject is isolated and the resulting bokeh is delicious.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend!

A man needs a bench (Oh Jupiter, I missed you (4/5))

Good morning all!

No matter where I walk, I always try to find a quiet spot with a bench. This particular one is at the very edge of Dingli Cliffs, in one of the highest spots on the Maltese islands.

It is about half way through my morning route and, when I'm up early enough, I like to sit there and just absorb the lovely view and fresh air for a few minutes.

Wishing you all a lovely day :D

P.S. Just in case you missed it, the photo's title is an hommage to Neil Young's song: Neil Young - A Man Needs A Maid
