This article strikes an optimistic note - I would particularly see these "platforms to reduce risk" they discuss.   Risk is a part of all business, but unlike corporate workers who can get rewarded with up to two years of unemployment insurance, the self-employed can be devastated by a down turn in business.   ___

This guy is obviously very smart - and brutally honest about his condition, so I would like to learn more about him and his journey.  He mentioned his ADD which certainly must be a factor and I would like to know how he changed.

Google's dysfunctional "Top Contributor" Program.  Do you know the true source of outrage?   I think I do.   It it when two very different human characteristics are combined.   Either one, by itself, might be "annoying" or even aggravating, but individually they cannot really cause outrage, together, however, they can.   The two characteristics are "arrogance" and "incompetence".

Think about it.  Imagine you hire some guy to do some home repair.  He is not all that good at it but he is really nice, and polite and listens to your concerns and tries to do better.   You might not be happy with this guy, but it would be hard to be "outraged".  Now imagine you hire someone else to do the same job, but this time the guy is totally arrogant, bordering on rude.  His work, however, is stellar - he is great at what he does, and hiswork is of... more »

His work, however, is stellar - he is great at what he does, and his work is of very high quality.  You might not like that this guy is so arrogant, and even think the guy is kind of a jerk, but it is unlikely that you will be "outraged" - he did a great job.

If however, the home repair guy you hire does a really crappy job, while at the same time is an arrogant jerk, you are going to be really pissed off - maybe even "outraged".

I bring this up only because with the "Top Contributor" program, Google has somehow managed to find people who are both extremely arrogant, and at the same time, incompetent - and they have put them on the front like of the company's product support.   I have written about this before expressing the opinion that Google's using unpaid workers for its technical support was a bad idea on many levels - filled with the potential for "unintended consequences," and a post I made about this was actually trending on Hacker News for a while.  https://goo.gl/hA6VgA

I wasn't going to write about this again at all, but I had still another run in with one of these jerks, and the situation was almost exactly the same.  It was not in any community but was on a member's post where the conversation turned to trying to get any information at all about Communities, since Google seems to not be supporting that technology recently.    Some guy barged in who obviously didn't know what he was talking about, and started giving "advice" right and left - in a way that demonstrated that he didn't have even a basic understanding the questions or issues.

Everything he said was said with complete certitude - even though he contradicted himself, and issued rebuttals to things I and others had said with no proof - just because.  Unlike the first time, he did not reveal he was a "Top Contributor" until his third or so comment, but then used that as an argument "I am right because I am a Top Contributor".   Even before I knew that, I was thinking "what a clueless jerk" - just like the last time, he know less than everyone on that thread, and was addressing questions is a far more superficial, almost childlike level.

This guy really was a dick - essentially a "Google sponsored troll" - he responded to a comment I made about communities by saying I had announced I was "rage quitting" - when I never said anything remotely like that.   He bragged about how he often has to "admonish" users and continued to throw out clueless insults about community owners, saying that they "don't want to collaborate' and blaming the owners of business communities for "duplicating each other".   He spewed other drivel, and I was once again left with the impression of someone who knew FAR less than the average user here, but still managed to be completely arrogant about his lack of knowledge.

We bashed head for a bit, but since it was so obvious he was an idiot that I just decided to drop it - it wasn't my post and he had taken it far off topic .  He wouldn't let me drop it, however, and repeatedly called me by name back to the post - essentially trolling, and I eventually had to mute the post.   Before I did, he made one last comment that was truly pathetic - he said he was on the help forums "every day and every spare moment" and that I had no right to complain unless I also was willing to do free work for Google.   His comment actually had a strange tone of exhaustion - like he was on a treadmill and didn't know how to get off.

Does Google understand why these people are doing this free work for them? - or do they just think "we found some suckers"?   What seems to have happened is that Google has selected out for a certain personality type - people for whom "support" means anything but - it really means satisfying  their own control freak needs.   Now it seems to have gotten out of control.  The actual needs of these "preferred contributors" can no longer be satisfied on the Google help forums, so now they are now are trolling other posts to make sure we can't get support there either, and that everyone carefully follows the Google "party line".

Now apparently, even Google itself is no longer enough for the "Top Contributors" - as you can see in the attached article, which could have been from the Onion.   Some genius has decided that Twitter will be a great place for them to continue to insult and patronize users of Google products.

As I have said before, we live in "golden age" of technical support - even big companies are figuring out how to do it well, but Google is an exception, and if anyone there is listening, you should know that these people aren't doing you any favors.   Yes, you are exploiting them, but they are exploiting you right back to have their own "needs" met.   In my opinion, if someone at Google is really under the mistaken belief that this is a useful program, they should at least try to "contain their damage" and keep them on the Google help forums, so the rest of us can still get help in other places when we need it.

I sometimes wonder if anyone close to Google ever tell them when "the emperor has no clothes"?   I can think of lots of examples  when someone should have, but I won't go into that here, I will just say that If I had to sum up my experience with the Google Top Contributor program in two words, those two words would be:

"arrogant and incompetent".___

Come on Science Guy - don't hold back.  Tell us how you really feel.

UPDATE:  Turns out it is not true, but I still think it would have been an appropriate response.
