NASA2,410,367Fifty years ago, President John Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon within the decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.   As we remember Neil Armstrong this week – the man who, with a single step realized the hopes of a president, this nation and the world – we are recognizing the extraordinary achievements of the past five decades achieved by our nation's space agency and where the passion to explore will lead us in the future.   President Barack Obama has set NASA on course toward an asteroid and to send humans to Mars within the next two decades. This goal is not without notable challenges, but using the knowledge, expertise and American ingenuity that has been the trademark of NASA scientists and engineers for the last half-century, NASA continues to make possible that which is seemingly impossible.   At 3:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, September 12, NASA astronauts, scientists and engineers will hold a Google+ Hangout to talk about NASA's rich history of innovation and ingenuity and talk about NASA's future goals for scientific discovery and human spaceflight. During the event, we'll be joined by: - Dan Dumbacher, Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Systems Development in NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. He is the former Director of Engineering at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Previously, he was the deputy director of safety and mission assurance at Marshall. - Ron Garan, astronaut who lived and worked aboard the International Space Station. He has been in space for 178 days and has conducted four spacewalks. - John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. He is an astronaut and researcher in high energy astrophysics, cosmic ray physics, and in the emerging field of exoplanet studies. He was also the deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, managing the science program for the Hubble Space Telescope and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope. - Michael Lopez-Alegria, the President of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation. He is a former Naval Aviator and test pilot (Capt., U.S. Navy, Ret.), NASA astronaut and International Space Station (ISS) commander. To join the event, visit http://plus.google.com/+NASA at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.   Ask your questions of the group in the comments below or using hashtag #askNASA :50 Years Later: NASA Discusses Using Innovation and Ingenuity to do Big Things2012-09-12 21:00:00652

After The Storm.

Many times the Best light for a Landscape Photographer is after a storm passes.

For National Camera Day I shot the storm light with my Fuji X100s.  Nikon D600 and with vividHDR on my mobile phone.  Each gave a different result and knowing their strengths and weaknesses allowed me to make hay out of this amazing light.

This was fascinating process to watch from capture through to completion.

I shot this image of James P. Abbott, esq. during my Palm Beach Photographic Centre's Infrared Workshop. This is the image I worked on with the entire class doing the same file part of day two: post processing an infrared file. Well I did say the class get's thrown into the pixel ocean and will swim to the finished image shore. I can smell the smoke of burning brain matter. Welll.... THEY did ask for this....
Once again only brought two cameras to the workshop and three lenses. The camera used was a Nikon D800 modified (by lifepixel.com) to capture infrared. The Lens used here was a Nikkor 24-120mm. Post processing was done with Capture NX-D (Raw processing) Photoshop CC 2014, onOne Perfect Suite and Nik Collection Software.

Spotlight on the Everglades. This image was all about waiting. My approach to Landscape Photography is like an action sport, when the light is at its best it changes rapidly which it did on this day but I had to hunker down to avoid the mid day sun and wait for something special to happen.

Two Wolves.

On Early Successes. Guard your passion. People will want to take it away from you. I was told at an ASMP meeting when I moved to Seattle that I should pack up and move to Portland "You'll do better there". Every gallery I called in Seattle hung up on my when I said I was a Black and White Photographer. "We don't show Photography".
I think that's why I'm an Educator, I want to tear down roadblocks for people wanting to learn Photography.

Thanks to everyone that ever told me to go into insurance or some such thing. All you've done is fuel my passion.

PS I would make the worst insurance salesman and I like coffee. And coffee is for closers.
