This guy filmed this video with just his phone while all alone in Las Vegas' airport. He describes in his comments how he did it:

"I had a person behind a ticket counter give me a roll of luggage tape before she left. I then used a wheel chair that had a tall pole on the back of it and taped my iPhone to that. Then I would put it on the moving walkway for a dolly shot. I also used the extended handle on my computer bag and taped the iPhone to my handle. I would tuck different stuff under the bag to get the right angle. For the escalator shot I had to sprint up the steps after I got my shot so the computer bag didn't hit the top and fall back down. Quite fun!

Having gotten two tattoos in my late teens I think more about how to get rid of them than what makes them permanent. Maybe if I had one of these cool science tattoos it would be a different story.

What makes tattoos permanent?
A tattoo machine causes a wound that alerts the body to begin the inflammatory process, calling immune system cells to the wound site to begin repairing the skin. It is this very process that makes tattoos permanent.

The earliest recorded tattoo was found on a Peruvian mummy in 6,000 BC. That’s some old ink! And considering humans lose roughly 40,000 skin cells per hour, how do these markings last? Claudia Aguirre details the different methods, machines and macrophages that go into making tattoos stand the test of time.

Pizza or tacos for lunch? Let Schrödinger's cat/science decide...

Important Decisions Require Science
Schrödinger's Cat Executive Decision Maker: May or may not contain live cat...

Why stick to eenie meenie miney moe when you can have Schrödinger's cat make decisions for you?

Open the door and if the cat is alive, the answer yes. If the cat is dead, the answer is no.

You can even devise a decision tree to answer more complex questions like: Should I wear my Dr. Who shirt or my Tesla vs Edison shirt today? Should we play WoW or LoL? and, of course, Should we have tacos, burgers, or pizza for lunch?

Google Cardboard - #VR  for your smartphone

Voila! DIY Google Cardboard (g.co/cardboard)

The cardboard I used was too thick, so I had to improvise on the design a bit.

The results are quite mixed. The images don't fuse for me when I use the Cardboard app; I basically see two sets of images.

But I have much better success when using the demos on the Chrome Experiments site (http://vr.chromeexperiments.com/#/desktop). I'm able to fuse the images very easily. The effect is pretty darn convincing for such a cheap device.

I'm not sure why there is a discrepancy between the two sets. I know that you can specify the interpupillary distance in the Cardboard dev kit, so it could be that the IPD is set too small for me in the Cardboard app.

The folks in the office had fun trying it out (also with mixed results).

When I have more time, I might get a nicer looking and sturdier pair.___Google Cardboard - #VR  for your smartphone

Puts things into perspective

The Dali Lama was asked what surprised him most about humanity. His reply?

"Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices his money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

Brings a whole new meaning to car pooling

When is a Hot Tub Cool? When It's Also a Cadillac Coupe DeVille!
On becoming the world's fastest hot tub

How many times have slightly inebriated engineering students asked, "Wouldn't it be cool if we could drive a hot tub?" Probably too many to count.

But how many times have those students gone on not only to build a fully functioning hot tub/car hybrid, but to have the opportunity to set the land speed record for world's fastest hot tub at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speedweek 2014? As far as I know, these guys (proud +McMaster University alum) are the first. And they are almost half-way to their +Kickstarter goal of $10k to get the Carpool DeVille on the track in August.

The photos show their first Carpool, made from a 1982 Chevy Malibu (Carpool Mk I), and their latest - raceworthy - version made from a 1969 Cadillac Coupe DeVille Convertable (Carpool Mk III; aka the Carpool DeVille).

They've re-engineered the entire car, and even built their own hot tub insert, inspired by a quote from Ernest Hemingway:

"Always do sober what you say you’d do drunk, that’s the only way you’ll learn"

You can read about the science and engineering behind the Carpool DeVille at their +Kickstarter site (http://goo.gl/0d3kAN). If you're so moved, think about donating even $1 or $5 to support these wacky folks and go down in history as part of Team Hot Tub Hot Rod!

If they make their goal, when I get my DVD of their attempt, I'll host a showing of the documentary so folks can get inspired to take risks and make their dreams reality. Maybe we'll even do a little hot tubbing after ;)

Get out of the gym and into the park

Studies have also found that days spent exercising outside lead to a greater use of energy the rest of the day, meaning your body continues to burn more calories after an outdoor workout. Research further suggests that even a short five minute walk outside, regardless of weather conditions can help increase mood, coping abilities, and improve self esteem.___Get out of the gym and into the park

Computer model backs 'publish or perish' mantra

The mantra 'publish or perish' is drilled into every early-career scientist — and for good reason, a computer model suggests. The most important predictor of success for a young biomedical scientist is the number of first-author papers published in journals with high impact factors early in a researcher's career, according to the formula.

Best and Worst Ceremonial Pitches

One of my favourite infographics of the week: the +Washington Post did an (admittedly unscientific) analysis of ceremonial pitches at baseball games to see if 50 Cent's ceremonial pitch really was the worst of all time.

The answer? Pretty much yes.

But it should be noted that the Cookie Monster cheated, although we should cut him some slack considering that he is a fictional character....
