Leslie Hawthorn OSCON 2014 Keynote
Checking Your Privilege: A How-To for Hard Things

Over the past 3 years, we've witnessed the discussion of the role of women and other underrepresented groups in technology grow broader, deeper and louder. From Wired to the Wall Street Journal, we've heard the message that we all have a problem. Even more exciting, major tech employers are just starting to respond with hard demographic data to back up years of academic research -- and lived experiences -- on the gender gap.

So, the first step is admitting we have a problem. But where do we all go from here?

The answer is simple, but the solutions are not: understanding one's privilege requires hard work. Doing something productive with that understanding is even more difficult. We'll all require a great deal more empathy for individuals whose lives we've... more »

Thousand-robot swarm assembles itself into shapes
http://youtu.be/IKCmhGbVd-o

There is something magical about seeing 1,000 robots move when humans are not operating any of them. And in a new study published in Science, researchers have created just that. This swarm of 1,000 robots can assemble themselves into complex shapes without the need for a central brain or a human controller.

Self-assembly of this kind can be found in nature—from molecules forming regular crystals and cells forming tissues, to ants building rafts to float on water and birds flocking to avoid becoming prey. Complex forms emerge from local interactions among thousands, millions, or even trillions of limited and unreliable individual elements.

"Schutt (News Corp.; adjunct, Columbia Univ.) and O'Neil (Johnson Research Labs) present a timely introduction to data science in this current era of big data. Their book, based on a course Schutt gave at Columbia (with numerous guest lecturers) and O'Neil's blog entries about the course http://mathbabe.org/, covers pragmatic topics rather than theoretical concepts and principles. The authors present foundational statistical models and computational algorithms, data visualization, and data preparation and engineering from the data scientist's perspective. They also provide various real-world examples from multiple disciplines including finance, social networking, and epidemiology, as data science has emerged in almost every area of study. Notably, the authors address the critical roles of future data scientists along with related ethical issues regarding data science. Although the references provided are not comprehensive, the authors include pertinent recommended readings. Unfortunately, the black-and-white figures are hardly readable. It would be helpful for readers to have prior knowledge of R and/or Python in order to understand the coding examples presented. A valuable resource for students and professionals with some background knowledge in data analytics who want to step into the data science world."

Building pipelines to facilitate data analysis
http://oreil.ly/1qtGru0
A new operator from the magrittr package makes it easier to use R for data analysis. by +Hadley Wickham
In every data analysis, you have to string together many tools. You need tools for data wrangling, visualisation, and modelling to understand what’s going on in your data. To use these tools effectively, you need to be able to easily flow from one tool to the next, focusing on asking and answering questions of the data, not struggling to jam the output from one function into the format needed for the next. Wouldn’t it be nice if the world worked this way! I spend a lot of my time thinking about this problem, and how to make the process of data analysis as fast, effective, and expressive as possible. Today, I want to show you a new technique that I’m particularly excited about.

Tim O'Reilly At Home

+Tim O'Reilly  has been speaking with +Slashdot  and they are posting the videos this week. Here's what they have to say:

We've run a few two-part videos, but this is the first time we've split one video into six parts -- with two running today, two tomorrow, and two Thursday. But then, how many people do we interview who have had as much of an effect on the nature of information transmission -- as opposed to just publishing -- as Tim O'Reilly? We don't know for sure, but there's a good chance that O'Reilly books are owned by more Slashdot readers than books from any other publisher. That alone makes Tim O'Reilly worth listening to for nearly an hour, total.

Understanding Context http://oreil.ly/1mR4BNU
Environment, Language, and Information Architecture

Understanding Context, a new book by Andrew Hinton, offers a powerful toolset for grasping and solving the challenges of contextual ambiguity. By starting with the foundation of how people perceive the world around them, it shows how users touch, navigate, and comprehend environments made of language and pixels, and how we can make those places better.

Make: Wearable Electronics http://oreil.ly/1pxclcB
Design, prototype, and wear your own interactive garments

Our bodies are our primary interface for the world. Interactive systems designed to be worn can be intimate, upfront, and sometimes in your face (literally). Bringing wearable electronics from concept to prototype to product can be both inspiring and challenging. This book gives you what you need to start working with these new materials, tools, and techniques. It covers popular wearable products such as the Arduino Lilypad, and Adafruit Flora.

Does net neutrality really matter?
Competition, access to bandwidth, and other issues muddy the net neutrality waters.
http://oreil.ly/1pxaYLc

+Andy Oram tries to fill in the blanks in this brief history of the subject.

Most people who latch on to the term “network neutrality” (which was never favored by the experts I’ve worked with over the years to promote competitive Internet service) don’t know the history that brought the Internet to its current state. Without this background, proposed policy changes will be ineffective. So, I’ll try to fill in some pieces that help explain the complex cans of worms opened by the idea of network neutrality.

We'll all require a great deal more empathy for individuals whose lives we've... more »

We'll all require a great deal more empathy for individuals whose lives we've never led, whose experiences we've never shared and whose challenges are all the same, but still quite different -- and often greater -- than our own.
