Toward an open Internet of Things
Vendors, take note: we will not build the Internet of Things without open standards. From +Mike Loukides via +O'Reilly Radar
http://oreil.ly/QrVdHh

In a couple of posts and articles, we’ve nibbled around the notion of standards, interoperability, and the Internet of Things (or the Internet of Everything, or the Industrial Internet, or whatever you want to call it). It’s time to say it loud and clear: we won’t build the Internet of Things without open standards.
What’s important about the IoT typically isn’t what any single device can do. The magic happens when multiple devices start interacting with each other. Nicholas Negroponte rightly criticizes the flood of boring Internet-enabled devices: an oven that can be controlled by your phone, a washing machines that texts you when it’s done, and so on. BioCoder is the newsletter of that revolution. It’s about biology as it moves from research labs into startup incubators, hacker spaces, and even homes. It’s about a very old programming language that we’re just beginning to understand, and that’s written in a code made up of organic chemicals. It’s the product of a sharing community of scientists that stretches from grade school to post docs and university faculty.

In Roseanne's last article, she demonstrated how improved performance and a lower PageSpeed Insights score were accomplished by removing unnecessary external JavaScript and CSS requests. YepNope was also used to manage the asynchronous loading of external requests.

After the improvements, She thought it was time to move on but PageSpeed Insights advised there was more work to do.

From our Programming Blog: Simon St. Laurent pulls highlights from +Jen Simmons  +O'Reilly Fluent Conference  keynote address. http://oreil.ly/1lGhADs

For a growing number of developers, “web” means “JavaScript”. Programmers like to focus on programming languages, but the Web’s basic power comes from its support for communications, not programming.

I asked Jen Simmons, host of the Web Ahead podcast, to keynote Fluent after seeing her give a talk on responsive layouts at the ARTIFACT conference last year. It wasn’t just a great talk on responsive layout, but an exploration of the Web foundations that make responsive layout possible. Responsive layout’s foundations are deep in HTML, which contained those multi-device values from the beginning.

At Fluent, Simmons delivered A Love Letter to HTML, exploring HTML’s origins. The goals driving a memo written25 years ago gave ... more »

Read  +Michael Ross's review of Mobile HTML5 on +Slashdot today.

"Web designers and developers nowadays are familiar with the critical decision they face each time before building an application intended for mobile devices: whether to target a particular device operating system (e.g., iOS) and create the app using the language dictated by the OS (e.g., Objective-C), or try to build an operating system-agnostic app that runs on any device equipped with a modern web browser (primarily using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript), or try to do a combination of both (using a library such as PhoneGap). The second option offers many advantages, and is the approach explored in the book Mobile HTML5, authored by Estelle Weyl, an experienced front-end developer."

Webcast: 7 Versions of 1 Web App - Building HTML5 Apps - from Desktop to Mobile 4/8, 10AM PT, by: Yakov Fain @yfain http://oreil.ly/1ooEJeB

This webcast talk is a fast paced comparison of different ways of developing HTML5 Web applications. The audience will see seven versions of the same Web application. We'll start with architecture and code review of a basic HTML/JavaScript version of a sample charity application. After that we'll switch to its jQuery version, then you'll see how to do it with Ext JS framework, then we'll cut this application into slices for modularization reasons. The second part of this presentation is about moving this application to mobile devices. You'll see this application implemented with Responsive Design principles, and then two more versions: one with jQuery Mobile and the other with Sencha Touch.

Transforming the Web (through transformation)
Decorating content may no longer be enough
+Simon St.Laurent  http://oreil.ly/1ik5qgB

Thousands of people invented it independently. Millions use it without thinking about a broader context. It’s time to name it so we can talk about it.

Transformation is changing the way we look at the balance between clients and servers, our approach to formatting and layout, and our expectations of what’s possible on the Web. As applications shift from transformation on the server toward transformation on arrival on the client, transformation’s central role becomes more visible.

“Templating” doesn’t quite capture what’s happening here. While templates are often a key tool, describing that tool doesn’t explain the shift from server to client. Templating also misses the many cases where developers are using plainJavaScript to in... more »

Facebook’s Hack, HHVM, and the Future of PHP
What is Hack and what does it mean for the future of PHP?
+Josh Lockhart http://oreil.ly/1fP4Vt4

Facebook recently released Hack, a new programming language that looks and acts like PHP. Underneath the hood, however, are a ton of features like static typing, generics, native collections, and many more features for which PHP developers have long been asking. Syntax aside, Hack is not PHP. Hack runs only on Facebook’s HipHop virtual machine (HHVM), a competitor to the traditional PHP Zend Engine.

Joi Ito, +Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)  Media Lab director  talks with Jon Bruner, Editor-at-large. “This nexus of wearable intelligent devices and ubiquitous wireless connectivity will greatly amplify our essential powers.”
- Joe Burton, +Plantronics http://oreil.ly/1pMFAGD

+Glen Martin talked to Joe Burton recently about Wearable Technology, and how it will potentially be dealt with socially.

“People are always clustered around the President, looking into screens, talking into headsets, bending over to whisper something urgent in his ear, handing him a paper or a phone with a text message that he needs to read,” observes Burton. “At any given moment, a large number of people are gathering, filtering and organizing the information that he requires. Wearables will essentially perform the same function for all the rest of us. They will be our ‘personalizer’ for the Internet of Things.”

"Transformation is changing the way we look at the balance between clients and servers, our approach to formatting and layout, and our expectations of what’s possible on the Web. Are we finally seeing connected vehicles doing more with the connection than infotainment?
+Jim Stogdill has some thoughts. http://oreil.ly/1mr5RZf

+O'Reilly Radar +O'Reilly Solid
Too much of the emphasis in the “connected car” market so far has been about staying in touch with your Facebook friends while you’re driving. There may be stupider uses of technology than that, but no examples spring readily to mind. At a recent conference, an executive at a major auto manufacturer described his company’s efforts to digitize their line-up like this: “We’re basically wrapping a two-ton car around an iPad.” First off, no car needs to be two tons anymore. The idea that manufacturers are spending R&D dollars to put your Twitter stream in the dash instead of making your car weigh 1,000 pounds so it can get 200 mpg viscerally rankles. Second, if I want aniPad, I’ll carry a... more »

Horseshoes, hand grenades, and building mobile applications
The difference between location and proximity: knowing you’re in the restaurant vs knowing what table you’re sitting at. +Matthew Gast
http://oreil.ly/1gyuD9i
As the old proverb goes, “close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” It doesn’t quite apply when building mobile applications, however. Smaller screens and the resistance to extensive keyboard input define the input and output constraints of mobile apps, but there is something more fundamental that a mobile application can do. At its best, an application that knows where you are will augment reality to help you navigate and interact with the physical world. These applications are sometimes described as “location” applications and sometimes described as “proximity” applications. Many people are guilty of using the words interchangeably —myself included.

Simon says, "I was delighted to sit down with Jose Valim, the creator of Elixir, earlier this month. He and Dave Thomas had just given a brave keynote exploring the barriers that keep people from taking advantage of Erlang’s many superpowers, challenging the audience with reminders that a programming environment must have reach as well as power to change the world.

Elixir itself is a bold effort to bring Erlang’s strengths to a broader group of developers, adding new strengths, notably metaprogramming, along the way.

Watching Elixir grow has been a unique experience for me. I’ve seen other languages (JavaScript and XSLT) emerge, but Elixir combines solid foundations on prior (Erlang) work with a remarkably open conversation abouthow to str... more »

Editor’s note: we’re running a series of five excerpts from our forthcoming book Designing for Emerging Technologies, a compilation of works by industry experts in areas of user experience design related to genomics, robotics, the Internet of Things, and the Industrial Internet of Things.

In this excerpt, author Andy Goodman, group director at Fjord Madrid, looks beyond wearable computing to a deeper, more personal emerging computing technology: embeddables. Goodman says that beyond wearables and implants lies a future symbiosis of human and machine that will transform not only the delivery of information and services, but human natureas well. ... more »

Many industries are beginning to grapple with the ability to develop good software on a short timeline. What about the industry you’re in? http://oreil.ly/QfYkST

+Jim Stogdill talks about how traditional 'Hardware' manufacturers are becoming more and more 'Software' makers.

"I don’t know what proportion of the JSF weapon system cost is in software, but in addition to the eight million lines of code in the aircraft, another 16 million lines are expected for off-airframe systems. Everything from logistical pipelines to command and control systems either have to be written or updated for this aircraft to seamlessly fit into the rest of the force. Given that this code is written and tested under some of the most conservative rules, my guess is that coding will account for something like a thousand person years of effort in the JSF program. Actually, that numberis pr... more »

Tailoring for performance
One source does not fit all  by +Roseanne Fallin

Like a lot of web teams, O’Reilly’s web group has increased its focus on using global components to better scale maintenance and optimize workflow. From a load-time measurement perspective, our performance ratings stay near benchmarks. However, after a recent analysis, using metrics other than load time, we found that our global efforts may have sacrificed performance on a handful of highly visible and heavily visited web pages.

Let there be (intelligent) light
Smart lighting's greatest impact won't be in connected homes — it will be in commercial and industrial sectors. http://oreil.ly/OHSXKP

New technologies often manifest their most dramatic effects through things that are commonplace, even prosaic. Consider the electric light: it’s ubiquitous and, well, boring. But meld it with some modern technology and you get intelligent lighting — wirelessly networked LED lights augmented by software and sensors.

Early adopters have included creators of Las Vegas shows and productions, but in the big picture, entertainment is a mere sideshow. Intelligent lighting’s greatest impacts will be in the commercial and industrial sectors: warehouses, office buildings, factories, cold storage plants, hospitals — any place that encompasses large spaces and employs a lot of lights. *The Web is eating software *
Web technologies have become the default, and are spreading http://oreil.ly/1gbrfSt  +Simon St.Laurent

A few years ago, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen wrote that “software is eating the world”:

"Six decades into the computer revolution, four decades since the invention of the microprocessor, and two decades into the rise of the modern Internet, all of the technology required to transform industries through software finally works and can be widely delivered at global scale."

That may be true, but Andreessen seems to have left out some of his earlier, more Web-centric visions (though perhaps he considers them complete). Software may be eating the world, but the Web has been “eating software” in a similar sense for as long as the Web has been visible. Continue reading: http://oreil.ly/1gbrfSt

Radar Podcast: thinking with data - Data tools are less important than the way you frame your questions. http://oreil.ly/1cUAYvN

Max Shron and Jake Porway spoke with me a few weeks ago about frameworks for making reasoned arguments with data. Max’s recent O’Reilly book, Thinking with Data, outlines the crucial process of developing good questions and creating a plan to answer them. Jake’s nonprofit, DataKind, connects data scientists with worthy causes where they can apply their skills.

A few of the things we talked about:

The importance of publishing negative scientific results
Give Directly, an organization that facilitates donations directly to households in Kenya and Uganda. Give Directly was able to model income using satellite data to distinguish thatched roofs from metal roofs.
