We’ll tackle some hard issues, speculate about the future of thought, and give away a few prizes, too. This #BigDataChat looks at augmented cognition: the ways machines are helping humans to decide better, and what that means for the future of human intelligence. Are we getting a brain upgrade? Are we becoming a new species? Were search engines just the start of a slippery slope towards assisted thought? And will we create unhealthy dependencies, or a digital divide that simply can’t be crossed?Today’s nascent tools like Siri, Cortana and Google Now are the earliest forms of #AugCog—but what’s in store for us next, particularly when tomorrow is filled with connected devices and smart motes.Whether you’re a #data scientist, UX designer, or just like speculating about where technology might take us, this topic is a fascinating and vital part of your future. So grab a coffee, follow the #BigDataChat hashtag, and join the conversation. Here's an interesting excerpt, but the entire post is very interesting:

"One thing you should do is visit a Cybermart -- there is a chain of electronics stores with that brand, but it also refers to the general category of electronics malls. These are big, multi-story stores, with large-footprint floors, but divided up into booths of different sizes, like a trade show, each rented out to a different merchant. To an American eye, the whole thing is a little nuts, but it works, and and it's worth seeing how it works. These are big, multi-story stores, with large-footprint floors, but divided up into booths of different sizes, like a trade show, each rented out to a different merchant. To an American eye, the whole thing is a little nuts, but it works, and and it's worth seeing how it works. (I'd love to take you to one if you have time while you're in Shanghai, though a Shenzen Cybermart may be better.)

The economics of the floor space mean that the showy, high-margin stuff is at street level, and the gritty low-margin is at the top. Start on the first floor; it will be bright, clean, white, with a few big booths. On sale: Samsung, Apple, Sony, maybe Alienware. Like a Best Buy, but less blue; you could be in a mall in Ohio, except for the Chinese signs and more smartphones on display. Skip this whole floor and head up the first escalator you can find.

Second floor. More merchants in smaller booths. More off-brands. Acer and Asus for laptops, Oppo and Huawei for phones. Flip phones and Nokia. Radio Shack with Chinese characteristics. There may be some nominally-banned-but-who-are-we-kidding consoles -- PS4, Xbox, Wii. Some accouterments -- mice and joysticks, chargers, cases. (And right now, for some reason, laser pointers. Laser pointers are the new black. No idea why.) Off to the side, maybe places selling routers and cables. Probably a soup place too, for the workers, and maybe a Family Mart or a 7-11. Look around a bit, then head to the escalator again.

Third floor. Parts. Want a PC? All the fixins are here -- chassis, power supply, motherboard, RAM in any pin configuration you'd care to name, disks by the crateful. Nothing up here is branded Dell or Sony; many things are branded Nanya or Western Digital. Like Fryes, but with all the stuff for end-users cleared out. There's little advertising or style -- the customers up here know what they want and are shopping on price. And that smell? Ah, that is the sweet smell of rosin-core solder. Smells like...victory. Well, victory and volatile organic compounds. You've left the "We sell computers" part of the store and entered the "We sell the technology you can make a computer with" part. People still make their own computers here. Keep that in mind when thinking about hardware hacking in China. Keep heading up.

Fourth floor. All solder, all the time. Full-on disassembly, modification, and repair of pretty much anything that has a screen. Back office services like "You want that laptop to run Windows 7 in Thai, instead of Windows 8 in Chinese? Come back in half an hour." There is no American commercial version I know of; it looks like the inside of a Jawa sandcrawler. There are broken screens everywhere, enough shattered glass to redo the facade of every Urban Outfitters in America. You know that message on the underbelly of your electronics? "No user-serviceable parts inside?" They scoff at that message on the fourth floor."

With over 80 sessions across 3 days, time travel would be the only way to attend every session at Velocity NYC. Thankfully, we've recorded the sessions and they're available today in our video compilation! Now you can enjoy all of the great presentations with the ability to pause, rewind and fast-forward... and without running the risk of creating a time paradox by meeting yourself.

This #BigDataChat looks at augmented cognition: the ways machines are helping humans to decide better, and what that means for the future of human intelligence.

Are we getting a brain upgrade? Are we becoming a new species? Were search engines just the start of a slippery slope towards assisted thought? And will we create unhealthy dependencies, or a digital divide that simply can’t be crossed?

Today’s nascent tools like Siri, Cortana and Google Now are the earliest forms of #AugCog—but what’s in store for us next, particularly when tomorrow is filled with connected devices and smart motes.

Whether you’re a #data scientist, UX designer, or just like speculating about where technology might take us, this topic is a fascinating and vital part of your future. So grab a coffee, follow the #BigDataChat hashtag, and join the conversation. Connect with experts & heavy hitters in the data industry for an hour of surprising insight, thought-provoking
questions and polls, and plenty of networking.

How to Join:

1. Go to #BigDataChat on Twitter Wednesday, Oct 8th at 10am PT
2.@Strataconf will post 10-12 questions about data topics, one every few
minutes, labeled Q1, Q2, Q3, etc.
3. Anwer the questions that are the most interesting to you, labeling
them for the corresponding question: (A1, A2, A3, etc.).
4. Make sure all comments, replies, or retweets include the hashtag

In pursuit of universal IoT standards
Universal standards could super-charge IoT growth, but can we get there?
http://oreil.ly/ZeHI2b

The first remotely operated domestic machine — a toaster — was connected to the Internet less than a quarter-century ago, in 1990. The Internet of Things (IoT) doubled in size a year later with the addition of a coffee pot. Eventually, the Internet Engineering Task Force Network Working Group assigned the coffee pot its own specific standard, HTCPCP 1.0, the Hyper Text Coffee Pot Control Protocol, RFC 2324.

The Internet of Things has grown a bit since then, to somewhere between two billion and 10 billion devices, depending on who’s counting. But it could grow even faster, according to many of the biggest names in the global technology industry, if everyone would just agree on a universal set of technical standards.

Be a squeaky wheel, but always bring oil
Camille Fournier on becoming a “multiplier” — and why multipliers are more effective than managers. http://oreil.ly/1BbIqbY

There are times when we all wish we could clone ourselves so we could get more done at work. In a Velocity New York 2014 keynote, Camille Fournier, CTO at Rent the Runway, presented an alternative, practical solution, that she argued is far more effective (not to mention feasible): become a “multiplier” rather than a manager.

Technical skills are important, she said, but they’re not ultimately the bottlenecks you experience later in your career — eventually, time and focus become the main hurdles.

To overcome these hurdles, Fournier argued that you need to take a step beyond managing and focusing on creating additive value, and focus on multiplying your value by increasing the effectiveness of the people working around you.

Inspired by Larry Wall, she outlined the three virtues necessary to become a multiplier:

Laziness
Impatience
Hubris
Breaking those out, Fournier explained that laziness in an engineer means automating things you’d otherwise have to do manually, and putting in effort to train the people around you to take over your tasks. “It’s the closest thing to cloning yourself,” she said, “and it removes a lot of bottlenecks…and frees you up to move on to do other things…and make other teams better.”

Impatience in an engineer means writing code to anticipate future needs, and “an impatient multiplier doesn’t do the stuff that isn’t important,” Fournier said. “A multiplier looks at the list of tasks — not only for themselves, but for everyone on their team — and says, ‘Why are we doing half of this stuff?’”

Finally: hubris. Fournier explained: “An engineer with excessive pride believes the code they write is beautiful…they are really proud of their work…[and] they have a high value of their own opinion.” Which means, she noted, they might be a squeaky wheel, but they always bring oil. “They not only think of how to make the technology better,” she said, “but how the whole team can be a little more productive.”

For more on how to become a multiplier, including how to measure success, you can watch Fournier’s keynote in the following video:___

“Promise theory is actually a description I came up with to analyze distributed systems. When I was trying to rewrite CFEngine and to learn the lessons from 15 years of use, what I’ve discovered is that there really are no good theories in computer science to describe distributed systems, which might sound like a paradox. I guess the theories of computing come from the world of linear sequential processing, Turing machines — which is not really the way computers work today, in the modern world. I needed some kind of way to approach distributed systems, and also to be able to talk about policy, because CFEngine is a policy-oriented approach to managing systems. We really didn’t have a theory of policy, either, in computer science that went beyond access control.

Who will build the “god platform” for the Internet of Things?
Everyone is racing to build the topmost layer for home automation.

Everyone’s racing to build the “god platform” for the Internet of Things: the highest, most generalized layer of intelligence and user interface that ties together connected devices and web services.

It’s tempting to look for analogy in mobile phone platforms, where Apple was initially dominant and now enjoys an extremely lucrative and influential minority position against Android. There are some crucial differences, though.

For starters, adoption won’t be quite as easy; domestic appliances last for a long time, and nothing consumers have seen yet makes connected laundry seem appealing enough to justify early replacement of a washing machine. And even in cases where replacement is relatively easy, the grandest promises entail stitching everything into a seamless system — replacing just the easy stuff can seem pretty lame.

Mobile phones initially channeled existing behavior (Facebook on a desktop browser) into the convenience of availability anywhere (Facebook on a mobile app). The jump from light switch to mobile app is much more dramatic, and, frankly, light switches are a pretty refined and satisfactory technology.

So, companies that want to participate in the home automation market will need to create products that work compellingly in isolation and alongside competitors’ products — and somewhere in all of this, the god platform might emerge.

A dialogue about this arose in a long e-mail chain among the Solid team over the weekend. I’ve edited and excerpted some of it below; we’d welcome additions to it in the comments section.

Mikey Dickerson Velocity NY 2014 Keynote
"One Year After healthcare.gov: Where Are We Now?"

From the 2014 Velocity Conference in New York City, Mikey Dickerson's keynote: "One Year After healthcare.gov: Where Are We Now?"

healthcare.gov, possibly the most closely watched government IT project of all time, launched to intense media scrutiny on October 1, 2013…and spectacularly fell on its face. The next six months would be a watershed in the federal government, as a trillion-dollar agency came to grips with the fact that there was no product to buy, and no check they could write, to deliver a working website. The next six months would be a watershed in the federal government, as a trillion-dollar agency came to grips with the fact that there was no product to buy, and no check they could write, to deliver a working website. Yet the site did eventually become functional, helped by what Time Magazine described as “a team of unknown coders and troubleshooters who dropped what they were doing in various enterprises across the country and came together in mid-October.”

As best as we can in 25 minutes, we’ll catch you up on the legacy of healthcare.gov, the current state of the art in federal government technology, what has become of those formerly-unknown engineers, and what these all have to do with each other.

About Mikey Dickerson (Federal Government | United States Digital Services Team):
Mikey Dickerson worked in Site Reliability Engineering at Google from 2006 to 2014, modulo side trips to work on the Obama campaigns in 2008 and 2012. In 2013 he took one more leave of absence to join what became known as the “ad hoc” team that rescued healthcare.gov after its disastrous launch on October 1. He has been on a baffling through-the-looking-glass adventure ever since, including a move in August 2014 to become the Administrator of the newly created United States Digital Service.

At the O'Reilly Velocity Conference in New York Mikey Dickerson gives his first keynote talk since being appointed the administrator of the new U.S. Digital Services Team.  He is telling the story of the troubled U.S. healthcare launch last year. When he saw that CNN was the monitoring solution, he knew they were dead in the water.

Mikey said he went back to his regular job at Google after consulting for the US Gov healthcare launch and "tried really hard to care." He says "Bad news: Everything is broken…Good news: There are a lot of easy things to fix."     #workthatmatters   #DevOps   #WebOps   #monitoring   #velocityconf
