On the Edge of Mordor, Hawaii
BEST VIEWED LARGE - You should be able to see the subtle intricate details in the Lava as well as the highlights.
We were incredible lucky to have wandered to the Edge of Mordor and back on Big Island of Hawaii. The lave has just started going into the ocean two days before we arrived and on our second visit an inflation cycle in the Volcano cause more than normal lava flow into the ocean. I wanted to capture the essence of what it was like when photographing the lava at Twilight.
How was this image created?
This is an manually blended image using our iHDR manual blending workflow. The sea floor and steam is lit by the light from the lava stream. While the sky is showing of the last glow from the setting sun. One of the biggest challenges was to dealing with the thermals caused by the heat around the lava streams. Camera's... more »

The largest and most southeastern island of the chain, Hawaii (Big Island), consists of five volcanoes. Kilauea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai have erupted in the past 200 years. We are back in LaLa Land after spending a month on the Big Island of Hawaii. One of our first stops was to revisit the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. Translated, the "Place of Refuge at Honaunau".
"Those who broke ancient Hawaii's intricate system of kapu (taboo) - perhaps by treading on the shadow of a chief, or fishing in the wrong season - could expect summary execution unless they fled to the sanctuary of a place such as this. As chiefs lived on the surrounding land, transgressors had to swim through the shark-infested seas. If successful, they would be absolved and released overnight."

At The End Of The Line
Repeatedly evidenced in the early years of rail across the continent, railroads looked to expand their passenger business by operating hotels at the ends of the lines.
Once a railroad was being built to a new location, the land speculators would prepare for cashing in on their investment. A hotel would typically be in place by the time the railroad service began.
Prospective buyers needed to have a place to stay, so they could become enamored of the scenery and have time to be enticed into buying a piece of property.
Likewise, an ocean liner, while it served as a moving hotel, needed to make sure people had places to stay where the cruise ships stopped.
Simply look at the early history of trains and ships, the pattern is apparent. Several in Hawai‘i followed this example in the planning of their transportation systems.

Kāhi Hāli‘a Aloha ("The Place of Loving Remembrance")
Unlike western burials in caskets (where the body is stretched out in the prone position,) native Hawaiians were typically buried wrapped in tapa in the flex position (the legs were drawn taut until the knees touched the chest (Malo.))
In addition to actual burials in and under the earth or land, Hawaiians also used burial caves, disposal pits and caverns to hide the bones of the dead (Kamakau.) The funerals take place in the night, to avoid observation and to maintain secrecy.
There are several special secret burial hiding places for the high chiefs, including the caves in ‘Iao Valley, Maui and Pali Kapu O Keōua, Kealakekua Bay, Hawai‘i.
Many ancient Hawaiians were buried in the beach and sand dunes, in unmarked graves.

I find myself thinking about Hawaii almost every day. It's funny, because I never wanted to go there in the first place. It's also funny because after that first trip all those years ago, I couldn't wait to go back.
This was probably the most vivid sunset I've ever seen. Pele set the clouds on fire for us over the ancient fish pond (loko i'a) that night.
