PG's problem understanding founders with accents, if he indeed has one, is causing waves on the Internets.

From personal experience, decoding spoken accents may be a skill in itself, a separate process in the brain. At 17 I was one of 250 kids from dozens of countries that toured the US for six weeks and remember how understanding each other was not just a question of English, we all spoke it fluently having just spent a year at US highschools or colleges, but also of being able to get past each other's accents. Easy for some, impossible for others, sometimes influenced by how tired people where.

Communication isn't as simple as it looks.

"Electronic theorists have been using the wrong pair of variables all these years--voltage and charge. The missing part of electronic theory was that the fundamental pair of variables is flux and charge," said Chua. "The situation is analogous to what is called "Aristotle's Law of Motion, which was wrong, because he said that force must be proportional to velocity. That misled people for 2000 years until Newton came along and pointed out that Aristotle was using the wrong variables. Newton said that force is proportional to acceleration--the change in velocity. This is exactly the situation with electronic circuit theory today. All electronic textbooks have been teaching using the wrong variables--voltage and charge--explaining away inaccuracies as anomalies. What they should have been teaching is the relationship between changes in voltage, or flux, and charge."

Not just young people. I always felt that FB is a waste of time because everything it does I can do better and more targeted with other tools.

Still wondering about how useful Google Plus is although on occasion there is something interesting. But HackerNews is more focused.

LinkedIn is getting better as people engage more. But there I am beginning to question how helpful it is to show everybody one's resume.

Keek is fun in a silly random way. Interesting to me how they blend celebs with normal people into "friends".

When I was in first grade they started us in math with set theory.

It was experimental approach, no reading or writing, we where learning that in another class, instead all we had where red and green marbles.

Addition, subtraction, all kinds of math naturally comes out of set theory! We loved it, best introduction to math ever! Everybody was engaged.

Parents where outraged, this did not look anything like the math that they had had in school and sadly eventually succeeded in killing the program.

The locust economy.. I marvel at supermarkets these days.

Paper bags where the handles come off. Club membership that makes me enter my phone every time. Having to wait behind people with coupons. Having to remember which items are normal priced and which ones are short term sucker priced today. Prices that double and half in the course of days. Two or three for one deals. Misleading yellow stickers that sometimes are discounts, sometimes not.

One can feel the spreadsheet toting analyst in the back room, telling his bosses that he is optimizing profit yield. May I suggest that measuring customer satisfaction not short term profits might be better if you want to maximize long term yield?

This is a great illustration of collective phenomena. If you look closely, each dot is just moving around in a regular circle; but because the different circles are out of phase with each other, when you back away you see waves steadily moving across the screen. It's a simple demonstration of how large-scale, collective phenomena can emerge from very simple small-scale behavior. Things like this happen all over the place: water waves and sound waves, for example, work in basically the same way, with the small back-and-forth motions of individual molecules leading to compression patterns moving through the air.

NASA could easily fund itself with cool stuff like selling movie tickets to things like landing on Mars. Science is content, physics is that awesome.

Hyperbaric oxygen and use of red light to stimulate healing on the cellular level. SAD prevention and better sleep with light therapy, blue light in the morning, white during the day, red at night. Grow plants, only about 50 square meters are needed to provide food and oxygen to one person.

Whatever you pay for you get more of. Where capitalism has a problem with ignorant buyers, non profits have a problem with ignorant donors.

What makes one person become a scientist while another with similar brain power creates a non profit to blow people up and create misery?

Random thought of the morning..
