The kickoff will be Saturday morning, probably around 9am, however,  there will be people out much earlier to catch the sunrise, that's for sure. But please add your comment in the comment section after you have posted them. *And if you are the one who failed to complete the mission and are thinking you are going to do it again next year, you can add your fav one you took for the project here!* One last thing: I have made this event "public." This time it wasn't my fault. My 15yr old daughter "needed" to record herself and didnt't fix it into the tripod properly.

Not The Classic Eilean Donan Castle Shot

But then I never was much into being the same as everyone else... the classic shot of course would consist of this angle and the tide in to give a lovely reflection. Then ad din sunrise or sunset and bingo bango bongo.

Another castle to add to me, BTDT list but one I would have, in this case, liked to at least have had the tide in to give me an option. But at east it was dry and the sun made an appearance - can't ask for more than that really.

What's on your BTDT List or better yet, what's on your I want to have been there done that list?

Waiting For Sunset

It got a bit "splashy" at times and I had to move the camera pretty sharpish several times ...

Stir Crazy

What does this phrase mean to you?

For me, at the moment it simply means complete and utter frustration that I haven't been able to get out an about with my camera since just after Christmas. There have been some good reasons why I haven't and chief amongst them are Gertrude, Henry and Imogen closely followed by general family busyness, illness and a broken lens.

So instead - have this delight taken back in late 2014 whilst on the European Photowalk led by +Athena Carey +Andy Bitterer +John Dunne    - it is an image of "The Breeches", a sea stack by Crohy Head off the coast of Donegal, Ireland.

Loving this ...

My little country of just 3 million inhabitants is in Rough Guides top 10 to visit. We come in at number 8, but hey, anywhere in the top 10 is awesome.

Come visit and if you do, give me a shout so I can show you some of my favourite parts.

Ogmore Castle
Pre Sunrise

There are benefits to winter mornings... it mans you can get up later and still be in plenty of time for sunrise.

Had fun with my first outing this month with my camera even though I'm still reduced to using my kit lens due to my precious daughter putting my landscape lens through the wrecker... oh and word to the wise, when your inner voice says "put your wellies on" then listen to it. Instead I wore my walking boots and ended up with damp feet as I had to wade back across the now submerged spit of land I was on due to the incoming tide!!!

World Prematurity Day

Did you know that November 17th has been dedicated to raising awareness of premature births which amount to (worldwide) 1 in every 10 births. What is premature? The medical definition I was given was any baby born before the 35th week of gestation but that appears to have crept up to 37.

Why do I care?

As the father of a child born at 28½wks gestation or 11½wks early I can never be thankful enough to the UK health system that saw my child as a living, breathing individual that had as much right o healthcare as I do. The paediatrician at the time, it has to be said,  was a doubter and gave us news we didn't want to hear and didn't take on-board. My child was given a prognosis of not surviving and if by any miracle he did then he'd "never walk, talk or play an instrument". Those were her exact words.

My child was given a prognosis of not surviving and if by any miracle he did then he'd "never walk, talk or play an instrument". Those were her exact words.

How can I forget when he grew into such a marvelous young man who now lives and works on the outskirts of big bad London forging his own path in this world.
- Yes he's profoundly deaf but he talks and understands like you or I that aren't.
- Yes he walks. He was never an athlete but he's healthy and loving life.
- And Yes he plays a musical instrument. In fact I've lost count of the number he actually does play but lets just leave it at piano and trumpet to certified orchestral standards.

My son ... Owen.

So what am I saying?

If someone metaphorically shakes a bucket at you to give money for this then do so. These children are our future and we have no right to say they don't have a right to life.

If you can support someone who has a child recognised as 'prem' then do so.

If you can fight for free health care for all that recognises the right of the newly, though severely ill, born to be treated as an equal then do so.

More details can be found here: https://www.neonataltrust.org.nz/about-us/world-prematurity-day-17th-november

Oh, and I get to be the proud dad that shares a few images of his life...___

Sunrise at Llangorse Lake

It's typical that you can spend a week within throwing distance of somewhere and it's only on your last morning - typically a mad dash to pack and get out - that the sun decides it's going to make a proper appearance.

The hut is the same hut I shared in my Sunset(ish) shot a day or two back but from a different angle. It is the information centre for the Crannog that is neatly tucked away behind this hut.

Profoundly Moved ...

The family took a minor detour on our way home from our week away and dropped in to see the Children's Memorial at Aberfan Cemetery in South Wales. For those that are unaware, Aberfan is where 116 children and 28 adults lost their lives October 21st 1966 due to slurry from the nearby colliery unexpectedly sliding down the hillside and engulfing the local primary school.

This image is just a apart of the overall memorial and as a family we were all profoundly moved by this location - the peace that we experienced was wonderful and the area has been beautifully landscaped now. However, this memorial serves to remind that live is but a moment and for some of us it's even shorter.

Even I had to stop reading some of the gravestones as they were bringing a lump to my throat.

Sunset (ish)

Grabbed possibly my last chance to get some sort of sunset shot this week I'm away. Due to weather predictions it is expected to rain for the rest of this week - well at key times of the day at least.

And as it was, the sunset was actually off to the right of this shout but there wasn't anything of interest there so snagged a long exposure of this instead. 149s of B&W goodness with my +Formatt-Hitech ND 10 stop filter.

Sunrise

From the other side.

Because the rain, mist, wind, etc has hit my locale all I have to provide today from my break to the beacons is a shot of the same sunrise I shared yesterday but this time from the other side of the church at Llangasty.

I love the colours going on in this one....

Memories.

Time, distance, circumstances, vision, perception.

All these things change when viewed under a different structure set.

What am I talking about...? Well last time I saw this church it was open to the public 24x7. Last time I was in the company of those rare souls known as friends that just allow you to meet together once in a blue moon but it feels like it was just yesterday you last saw them. Last time I wasn't a camera toting artist looking at composition and light with a critical eye. Last time I came here it was mid-morning and memory tells me the surrounding area wasn't locked away behind 'no access' gates and fences.

- This time it was closed.
- This time I was alone.

Greenan Castle Sunrise and reflection.

Or The Shot That Shouldn't Have Been

I captured this beautiful scene on what was my 2nd morning in the Glasgow area on my recent trip 'oop North' for the +Scotland Photowalk 2015 - the truth is, it shouldn't have happened.

Unknown to myself and my driver, +Kai Bergmann plans had changed because the other photogs had consulted the weather gods and they said - no sun so put their arrival back to well past sunrise. Trouble is, despite plans changing I managed to oversleep and woke to check the time (I've never been the best sleeper) and did one of those double takes when I realised it was 05:20 when I should have been leaving at 05:00 - quick check on FB and I had a message encouraging me to 'wake up sleepy head' - 5m later and I was in the car heading for the Ayrshire coast.

On arrival it was clear that the best picture opportunities to be had were out to sea so off came the boots and socks. Then I rolled up my trousers and went paddling at 06:30. Chilly isn't the word but I quickly adapted and managed to get a whole host of images including this one, just about showing the sun...

The start of another very long but wonderful day of photography and friends.___

WWPW 2015 - Tenby

My thanks to +Clive Surman who organised and led this walk - I had a great time meeting a bunch of fellow photogs and mostly enjoyed not being the organiser this time around!

All of these shots were shot on the day using my Lensbaby and Sweet35 optic which equates to 56mm on my crop sensor. I decided to go lightweight this year and didn't even bring a tripod. Some shots are more fun than serious and others I love. You pick which you like (or don't) and please, feel free to tell me what you think.

Thanks as always to the team behind the +Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk for persuading folks that it is possible for fellow photogs to get together and have fun at least one day a year.

The Armadillo

This is The Clyde Auditorium or more commonly known as 'The Armadillo' - seeing it side on makes it 100% clear why but you likely get the idea from this front on shot.

This is yet another in the series taken on my recent +Scotland Photowalk 2015 and is the end of our first full day in / around Glasgow and we are standing on one of the many bridges over the river. The trick here was to expose for long enough to bring out some detail in the shadows whilst not blowing out the bright lights. In post all I did was sharpen a tad, crop a tad and punch the shadows a bit.

As always, if you've any thoughts please do share them below.

Samsung SmartThings

So I got picked to trial the Samsung SmartThings which is new to the UK but I believe the US has had it for a while yet.

Mine arrived today and my first impressions are that the box it's in and the main 'hub' itself are all of Apple'esque design... be interesting to see what I can do with this over the next 6 weeks and will probably post a few more snaps and notes as the weeks go by.

Sunrise (yes really) at Glasgow Tower

This was our first full morning of the weekend that was +Scotland Photowalk 2015 and was supposed to have got  us off to a glorious start.

The crazy aspect is that as I was getting ready at 5am and looking out the 6th floor of my hotel I could see the stars and a brilliantly clear sky with a few clouds. The first hints of colour was also just starting to creep into the morning and I was looking forward to some fab opportunities.

Even as we walked towards the tower which was about 30min away the colour was there but cloud was rapidly descending and then this is the moment of sunrise .. LOL. but as ever it is the memories made and not always the images captured. Me, I love the symmetry on display here.

When in Glasgow recently for the +Scotland Photowalk 2015 myself and fellow photog buddy +Kai Bergmann came across this fantastic piece of 'graffiti'. This thing is huge but fitted in easily with my wide angle on - however as it was at night I was trying to eliminate the surrounding dark and distractions of street lights, etc... if you click through to the link above then you'll see the full thing. You could even opt to follow the artist himself.

Portencross Pier

As a landscape photographer there are times when locations are simply so underwhelming that you wonder why you bothered.

But then you realise you went to the location with a bunch of fellow photogs and that in reality it isn't the image but the experience that counts far, far more.

This pier was one such. The location and end image are, for me, pretty "meh". The people I went with are simply some of the finest around and made the effort and distance more than valuable... and as the advert goes, "Priceless". That said, do a google for Portencross Pier and look at the glorious sunset imagery that this so could have been for it was that time of day...really!

Barrel Jellyfish

Today I took part (rather than lead for a change) in the +Scott Kelby +Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk in beautiful and sunny Tenby in South Wales (UK).

And this, though a grainy shot through murky green seawater, is my absolute highlight of the day. What made it tougher to capture is the bright sunlight streaming in and my being 'stuck' with my Lensbaby and Sweet35 optic.

This gorgeous creature is harmless (no sting) and was approx 5ft long.

When Is  Wheel Not A Wheel?

When it's the Falkirk Wheel of course. I loved my time here though it was far too short and I missed out on grabbing a snap of the 'mini Kelpies' that are on display here.

For those not in the know, the 'wheel' is designed to lower or raise boats between different levels of the canal.

The Shot: The shot was created by allowing Lightroom to stack 5 images across various eV levels into a pseudo HDR and then I did my usual contrast, lights & shadows tweaks. You may ask why I opted to stack rather than grab as one shot and the simple answer is evidenced in the image... it was mostly due to the harsh light coming in from left hand side of the image as it was setting. That and to allow the few clouds in an otherwise blue sky to gain some contrast.

For the uninitiated ...

I'm sure most would recognise princes Harry and William. But would you recognise that they took sibling rivalry a bit further as one is honourary president of English rugby and William is vice patron of Welsh rugby. Thus the red and white jerseys ...

This image depicts the moment of the final whistle in last nights epic Rugby World Cup 2015 battle royal (no pun intended) between England and Wales.

I'll let you work out who won.

Peace
"It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart." ~ unknown

I have spent the last few days in the company of some of the most excellent folks I have ever met. Most I consider friends and the new joiners I trust will become so. Best bit is they are all fellow photographers and I get to pick brains to better know what I'm doing.

I, of course, talk of the #Europhotwalk2015 led by the excellent team of +Athena Carey +John Dunne and +Andy Bitterer and it was on this weekend that I snapped this image.

What it is: It's a sea stack at Dunure Castle just south of Ayr on the West coast of Scotland taken with an exposure of 30 seconds and converted to B&W.

The Old Packhorse Bridge in Carrbridge, Scotland.

This bridge was originally built in 1717 and actually was built to allow funeral processions to reach the church when the river was 'in spare' and as a consequence became known locally as the 'coffin bridge'.

I had hoped for the sun being more obvious through the arch but ah well, I'll take this kind of view any day.

What say you... fancy joining me on a sunset / sunrise shoot? Even if it's only to watch and not photograph the event? Which reminds me that I can't wait to catch up with +Athena Carey +John Dunne +Andy Bitterer and whole bunch of other crazy photogs next weekend on the +Scotland Photowalk 2015

Watermark in LR Not Working

I only use watermarks when I export images for my website or for Facebook (you lucky peeps get an unobstructed version) but for whatever reason when I use my export preset in Lightroom it is no longer working.

I've tried creating a brand new one and not using my export preset but it makes no difference. This is with Lightroom CC and only changes I've knowingly made are to clone my hard drive to a larger & faster one and upgrade to Windows 10.

I've done the usual searches but only results I'm finding are to a bug that was in LR3 a few years back...

Any thoughts?

I think this is only the 2nd competition I've ever entered... and even tough I never expect to win I do think it's cool just to get votes.

I'm not going to beg you to vote for mine - though the link below takes you to it but I will ask you to take a look and if you like it to vote for it. And if not, then vote for one you do like.

It's the beauty of nature competition if that helps...

Skye Bridge Sunset

Another shot from my family vacation to Scotland - and Skye was our third location.

Had the chance to talk to a young Chinese lady (taking selfies of course) whom was touring on her own and offered her some of my anti-midge spray as they were trying to devour her.

Not the most picturesque of bridges but boy was the sunset nice.

That Moment

Yesterday I shared my shot which I called "waiting for sunset" and you can see it here: http://bit.ly/1hLshYD

This one is sunset .... "that moment" in time as the sun dips past the horizon. I was blessed last night and very shortly after this I put away my camera and simply sat and watched nature play her movie for me. A fiery red golden hour was my reward.

Aside from which ... I needed to dry my camera out anyway :)
