Money Making Techniques for Startups.  I thought this slide deck from a company called "Board of Innovation" was interesting.  This seems to be mostly for online businesses thought they don't really say that.  We have already talked here about how the "freemimum" model is much less effective than many people think http://goo.gl/RF36B and investors often roll their eyes when startups say they will be supported by "advertising".   Nothing earth shattering here, but this has some good food for thought about what people will pay for.

PHP and App Engine.  Learning PHP has been on my list for ages, as has been learning Spanish.   I hack at it to make my open source applications work, but I am really not a coder.   This seems like it must be a good thing in some circumstances - not having to mess with servers.   No mySQL though, right?   I would also have to learn that "big table" thing also?

Something weird is going on in my brain this morning.  I seem to be able to see into the future - but only about 30 seconds into the future.   Seriously I think about something and a few minutes later they are talking about it on the radio, or I think about some person I haven't interacted with in a while, and suddenly they are on top of my Google+ stream.  Probably just a series of coincidences, but it has been happening for the past hour.

Before I say anything, I want to remind everyone that after the last major Google+ update, I said I liked it, when many others were criticizing it harshly.   So now I will say it - what a chaotic mess!   Seriously, this is an improvement?  It reminds me of the "improvement" to our profiles here, which I still consider to be a disaster. 

With the possible exception of better tag placement, this doesn't look like an improvement at all  I am still processing, but in almost all cases an "upgrade" by Google means a loss of functionality for normal users.  I will try to adjust - what choice do we have, but at the moment, not a happy camper.

Business & Startup Books   My "moderator pick" this time is a post I saw a while back by  +Kevin Kauzlaric introducing himself and his blog about startup books.   While his introduction wasn't as detailed as I might have liked, I did really like his blog and the niche he is working in - basically he reads startup books gives brief reviews - enough to decide if it is for you or not.  

Since a big part of intelligent reading is deciding what to read, his blog makes this easy.  He has a section "reasons to read this book" and "reasons it may not be for you" that make it perfect for this purpose.  Kevin has recently moved his blog to: http://kevinkauzlaric.com/

I won't be around much this weekend; lots of yard work to do, Sunday outing with boys, plus the need for quiet intellectual pursuit. Anyone who really wants to reach me can work out how to do that. 

Several things bothered me today. Most specifically:

Do you still need a mom? I've been one for a long time, to a lot of young people. Three of them are adults now. Two are neat, one is still easily overwhelmed by her stuff. But I know she tries. 

Maybe you try, too, or maybe you just don't. So I'm gonna play mom for a minute here. It's the weekend, time to do stuff, for most of us. If your house or apartment is a mess, and you aren't very ill, disabled, or recovering from giving birth, clean it up. I mean it.
