Yahoo!'s acquiring Tumblr was all over the news, but I didn't hear about this until today. Apparently, last week a bunch of Automattic (wordpress.com) shares went on sale for $50 million. This values Automattic at around $1 billion — pretty close to Tumblr's purchase price. But they're still independent and going strong.

Changing my gender to male on Google+ improved my What's Hot experience Google+ has updated how they distribute content to users through Explore
Earlier today, +Kimberly Chapman told me about a little experiment she'd done. She'd opened a tab on her browser and directed it to plus.google.com/explore, a stream that enables you to see the hottest content on Google+. In another tab, Chapman changed her gender on her Google+ profile from female to male, and then loaded the Explore page into another tab.
The difference was astonishing. "As a girl, I get stupid warm-fuzzy meaningless shit," Chapman writes on a post (http://goo.gl/ZDBxT). "As a guy, I get nerdy stuff. This is not okay. I get that [What's Hot] algorithms are based on what people click, like, share, comment on, etc. Fine. But I challenge anyone to give me one good reason why there should ... more »

I know a lot of people going to hacker schools and learning programming, and, like others, I'm concerned about the lack of girls and women interested in technology and other STEM fields, but here is a strong argument emphasizing the Arts as well (STEAM). We really need more writers who will write more diverse roles for women and girls on TV and other media. This makes me think that we need to do a writing workshop at LOL soon …

Come celebrate Liberating Ourselves Locally's first anniversary and new year's open house! We'll bid farewell to the dragon, and say howdy to the snake! There will be lots of food and plenty of great people! We want to spread the word about our space, but also to give people a chance to talk about how they'd like to use our space. :-)

I've been baking a lot of pies recently, and people have been asking me about the recipe I use for the crust. It's basically a modified version of the Cook's Illustrated crust (where vodka is the secret ingredient). I got a vegan version from veganbaking.net and then modified it to use grams as the measure for most ingredients and, more significantly, to use maple syrup as the sweetener. This is actually a 3x recipe, meaning it yields 6 crusts, enough for 3 9" pies w/ both bottom and top crusts. Actually, I find there's more dough than you need for a 9" pie unless you are going for a thick crust.
Vegan maple syrup pie crust (yields 6 crusts)
Ingredients (don't worry about being exact … these measurements imply much more precision than they probably should):
937.5g flour
145g maple syrup
15g salt
133g vodka
129g water
4.5 s... more »

Please consider supporting Agen(c)y, a cabaret about the non-profit industrial complex. This should hit home for anyone who's worked at a non-profit whose aims have been subverted by looking for funding, or who had their funding cut unexpectedly by a foundation, etc. But there should be something for everyone in this show!
Thanks!
Full-discloser: I'm performing in the show.

It's a three-peat! +Judy Tuan has proposed at and won another app contest! This time it's an awesome iPad app called PlayPitch. Unlike other music games, you actually play a real instrument, and PlayPitch tells you if you hit the right notes! It's kind of awesome, and it's now competing in the global App Olympics: http://appolympics.bemyapp.com/?cat=3. Please vote for them!
Teammate and Android wizard +Chiu-Ki Chan(creator of http://monkeywriteapp.com/) wrote about the process here: http://blog.sqisland.com/2012/02/bemyapp-hackathon.html. And there's a video featuring Judy using the app w/ a pan flute: PlayPitch on the pan flute

It is truly a sad state of affairs that Australia, of all countries, has the ability to lead the world with solar renewables. There are brilliant ideas developed by Australian companies for multi gigawatt power plants which burn NOTHING, sadly they have had to take these ideas to the USA.
I have read plenty about the political lobbying from the mining companies, it's such a tragedy that a few 100 people can sway the government because, for the very short term future they are making billions of dollars.
I've driven far and wide across Australia, one of these towers would be such a landmark and produce so much energy people would travel from all over to marvel at it. But no, let's keep digging shit up and burning it.

Looking jfor good examples of mobile web apps — Web sites that are optimized for a phone or tablet experience. The ones I find kind of useful (over native apps) are Google Maps and Gmail. I was (sort of) impressed with Amazon's cloud reader, but it hasn't been super useful on a practical level. For a while, I thought Facebook's mobile web version was better than the native app (by a lot) until they released their update. Any you particularly like? I'd especially like to hear of apps that are equal or better than native apps, on any platform (iOS, Android, RIM, WebOS, etc.).

What's your favorite IRC client on Mac OS X? I used to use Colloquy a few years back. Just recently I've started working with a few teams that use IRC. I tried Colloquy first, but had some problems and noticed that it hasn't been updated in a year or so. So I looked around and saw a few different clients on the Mac App store, and saw LimeChat and Textual. LimeChat's UI seemed a little confusing to me; Textual's seemed a little more clear (even though it's a fork of LimeChat). Seems to be okay, but wondering if there's something else out there that folks like a lot. Or reasons to try to get to know LimeChat better. I have also considered using a command line client ... I used to use irssi once upon a time, which was actually very convenient because I could leave it running on a vm I had somewhere in the cloud so I could see messages that I might have missed while offline (is there... more »

Please don't think that you aren't guru enough to speak at conferences! I have attended conferences and hack-a-thons where I have caught mistake after mistake from people who label themselves as gurus in fields i don't feel anywhere near guru-esque.
So, you don't have to label yourself a guru (I certainly don't claim to be a guru of anything, other than making chocolate desserts and self-invented mixed drinks). Just realize that many people speaking at conferences aren't gurus at all. They just feel comfortable enough in a single sub-topic to present on that topic. Realize, if someone knows your topic like the back of their hand, they're not going to attend your session. Instead, they'll attend a session where the material is new.
So, while I truly believe all speakers should be competent in their subject matter (and i have seen many 'great'... more »
