We're switching all our 65W can lights over to LED bulbs. Found a good quality, yet pretty cheap (~$10.50 per bulb) LED BR30 lamp that is marginally brighter, warm white, and just 9W...an 86% reduction in energy use AND I shouldn't have to replace them for about 20 years.

So a store had a $2 off $20 purchase coupon.

I just happened to need 10 of something that cost $20.99.

So, of course, I placed 10 identical orders for one item each.

That maximizes the work for their shipping department while maximizing my discounts and minimizing their profits. How could they think that's a good idea?

"David Lane, who is running Rand Paul’s outreach to evangelical voters for his potential presidential run, has a completely unhinged column at the Worldnutdaily calling on Christians to become martyrs in order to stop same-sex marriage — how, exactly? — because it will destroy America."

OK, Christians, let me be blunt. People like this guy make the rest of us nervous about your religion for two reasons.

First, both he and you are going to claim the other guy "isn't a true Christian." He's going to say you're not faithful enough, and you're going to say he's not embodying the love of Christ. Well, guess what...there's no way to know who's telling the truth. It's not like there's a "true Christian" certification exam. So, until you all start denouncing these guys en masse, it's basically your wordagain... more »

Ohio Gov. Kasich has a rather strained relationship with accountability, transparency, and the management of public funds.

Outside experts say the amount of effort taken by Kasich and Republican legislative leaders to block the JobsOhio funds from being audited is "unusual."

"I can't think of any good reasons why the state government would want to reduce audit scrutiny," says David Cotton, chairman of Cotton and Company, a Virginia auditing and advisory firm with a focus on government finances. "The thing that's puzzling is: What's the motivation? There's definitely something weird about it."

In light of the PRISM/Verizon surveillance row, a couple of things came to mind. First, we debated this hotly back in 2006, but it's taken 7 years to come to light how it manifested in practice:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From ZDNet (May 17, 2006):
SURVEILLANCE SOCIETY: GROWING DAILY?
Summary: A bill being floated on Capitol Hill by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner (R.—Wisconsin) would require Internet service providers to deliver logs of users' surfing data to the government. Is it time to pull the plug on this surveillance society?
As a result of the debate we were having at the time, I produced the attached image. I felt it was a continuation of Pres. Bush's policies that reflected a "security at all costs"a... more »
The NSA spying debate shouldn't focus on privacy, it should focus on trust.
The NSA communications monitoring program called PRISM is a hot topic...everyone is chattering about it. One discussion I've not yet seen is why we're upset about it. The presumption nearly always seems to be about our right to privacy. If not that, then people are pulling out the old "big government" expletive. I'm not sure either of those is the right issue.
I've long believed that no one should be condemned or punished for knowing something. By itself, knowledge is neither evil nor dangerous. {Aside: In contrast, not knowing is often more of a threat. Just wander hungry in the woods for a few days if you don't believe me.} No, knowledge alone doesn't merit our concern...actions are what we should be worried about.
I don't mind that there are... more »
I have a tremendous number of thoughts about the various revelations about the NSA's domestic espionage programs revealed this week. But first and foremost, I wanted to share this message from +Larry Page and our Chief Legal Officer +David Drummond. Google had no involvement in the PRISM program and the first we heard of it was when Greenwald's article hit the press.
I'm not sure what the details of this PRISM program are, but I can tell you that the only way in which Google reveals information about users are when we receive lawful, specific orders about individuals -- things like search warrants. And we continue to stand firm against any attempts to do so broadly or without genuine, individualized suspicion, and publicize the results as much as possible in our Transparency Report. Having seen much of the internals of how we do this, I can tell you that it is a point of pride, both... more »
Dear +Google+, I'm done with you for a while. This last redesign is just too damned aggravating.
I'm constantly losing my half-written posts and comments as Chrome (or G+...I can't tell which) refreshes while I'm typing.
I'm constantly having to go back and re-open the post in my notifications drop-down because scrolling scrolls the whole page instead of just the comments on that post.
I'm constantly having to click "Read more" because I can't see more than a couple of lines on a post or comment.
And my beloved Photo Zoom extension is broken, making me have to constantly click on photos just to see the full-sized version.
Look, you know I love you. I wouldn't have spent the last 2 years posting nearly 5,000 times if I didn't. But you HAVE TO FIX THIS. The old design, with all its faults, was quite... more »
Misunderstanding the Fundamental Purpose of Education
Ohio Governor John Kasich said, "I want universities to align their efforts to make sure that when the students come in, they’re trained for the jobs that exist."
The problem with that statement is pretty clear to anyone who has studied the way industries work. If universities only "train" students for "jobs that exist," we will be slowing down innovation and retarding growth, two very bad things.
In contrast, universities should be teaching (not training) students how to think critically and analytically while exposing them to knowledge and skills that will be useful for future professions.
Society and industries change, and that change is only accelerating. If we transform higher education into little more than advanced vocational training, we will undermine ourco... more »
Or would they prefer to let the market decide how people want to buy cars? Because they can't simultaneously want deregulation and government-stipulated restrictions. #Tesla  +Tesla Motors
