17-Hours Does Yosemite!

Yes, another short trip up north to Yosemite Valley. It was another last minute decision to take the 5 hours drive into Yosemite Valley to catch some Milky-Way awesomeness. Of course this trip did not contain an once of sleep between the two of us, just hunkering down on top of Glacier Point for the whole night.

The moonless night made for some pretty dark skies and even colder temperatures. The only light we had that night was a distant lightening storm that was attacking some mountains in the surrounding valleys. 

This image was one of my last of the night (sunrise). I was about done from the long and cold night, but as soon as the morning light began to fill the valley, I had a second wind.

A lot of people ask me about my workflow - how I process photos and that sort of thing. Lightroom 4 is a big part of it, and the new Lightroom 5 (currently in Beta) will be as well. I find Lightroom to be so much easier than Photoshop (though I use that too!) On Wednesday, the Lightroom product team will be hosting a hangout where we can all ask questions and hear what's going on with the new product. My photographer friends 
+Dallas Nagata White and +Ed White are going to be acting as the Google+ community representatives and help field the questions from the user base.  Don't miss it, it's Wednesday at 11:00am PST. Here's the event link:

Vasari's fresco begun in 1568, and completed by Federico Zuccaro in 1579.

The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (English: Basilica of Saint Mary of the Flower) is the main church of Florence, Italy. The Duomo, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.
The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. The three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction... more »

5 Years ago today my mother passed away from PSP.
Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

This is a rare, horrific neurodegenerative disease. It is relentless. 
There is no treatment, no cure.
It robs you of your ability to see, ability to swallow, ability to speak, ability to walk, ability to use your hands and so on... yet it does not rob you of your mind. You remain painfully aware of everything that is happening to you. 

I am posting this to raise awareness and in honor of Barbara Varallo who fought this disease valiantly and then donated her brain to The Cure PSP Research Program. She wanted desperately for there to be a cure found...

When I went in search of peace, I found you pointing to eternity.

There are several beaches that I’ve truly come to love in this world. Beaches that I’ve thought were absolutely calming and peaceful. But of all of those beaches, the most peaceful I’ve ever visited has to be Bombay Beach over by the Salton Sea. The ruins of what was once whole simply sit there, aging and will probably still be there long after my time has come. One section of the ruins I found rather interesting (from several angles for those of you that have seen my other shots from here) was what I believe was a pier. What I found so fascinating was how it was pointing out to a never ending sea. To eternity as I like to think of it, especially because of how long this ruins has lasted. I do plan on visiting this area again, but I would love to make sure to visit this area a few decades from now to see what’s left andwhat pa... more »

 ~ Saint-Paul de Vence , France

"The core of Saint-Paul de Vence between the year 1000 and the beginning of the 12th century was the Plateau du Puy, where the cemetery now stands. Dwellings had probably been set up around the church of Saint Michel, which played a religious role obviously, but was also where the community's representatives would gather to take major decisions. The current chapel probably dates from the 16th century.

"Flowers, cupcakes, tombstones and a giraffe are just a few of the objects scientists have coaxed materials into impersonating. Imaged through microscopes -- and with the help of a little artistic license -- complicated nanostructures can sometimes take on surprisingly familiar guises.
Since 2005, the Materials Research Society has hosted a Science as Art competition at both of its biannual meetings, challenging entrants to infuse a bit of creativity into the images of materials they meticulously manipulate and manufacture.
