Markos Giannopoulos6,137It's the start of a new month and as I did for June, this is my thank you to people I engaged with in July. But first some stats! In June I've had 526 plussers, 65 commentators and 95 sharers. In July the numbers are 710 plussers, 93 commentators and 158 sharers! An amazing month for which I'm most thankful :) I have added back everyone one who engaged with me (tracking is done via +Circloscope, if you want to learn how you can do it, read this http://bit.ly/14oNoYR) but since I can't fit everyone in the 500 people limit of circles, this July Engagers circle includes all sharers and commentators and the grand majority of plussers sorted according to the relevancy score that Google+ calculates for each two users (along with some other criteria where there was no relevancy score). I've also include the 20+ people who through the last months honoured me by including me in original circles as tracked by +CircleCount. My posts this month had a variety of topics around technology, web/mobile apps and web development, social media, Google+, photography and some ranting about overuse of animated GIFs :) So if you're looking for some geeky engagers, add this circle! #circleshare   #circleoftheday  2013-08-02 22:06:375005840130CC G+

As a result I have decided to follow a recent trend and show my gratitude for their belief in sharing me by sharing them with those of you who have me in your circles. A Little Acid Turns Mouse Blood Into Brain, Heart And Stem Cells

"Biologist Haruko Obokata and her colleagues at the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology say they've figured out a fast, easy way to make the most powerful cells in the world — embryonic stem cells — from just one blood cell.

The trick? Put white blood cells from a baby mouse in a mild acid solution, Obokata and her team report Wednesday in the journal Nature. Eventually a few stem cells emerge that can turn into any other cell in the body — skin, heart, liver or neurons, you name it."

The global learning crisis is costing $129 billion a year and will last for generations unless urgent action is taken, says the latest Education for All Global Monitoring Report, released on Wednesday.

A quarter of young people in poor countries unable to read a sentence and in a third of countries analysed, less than 75% of teachers are trained.

Magic Sand or Hydrophobic Sand

Magic sand, Moon Sand, Mars Sand, Space Sand, Sqand or Aqua Sand is a toy made from sand coated with a hydrophobic compound. The presence of this hydrophobic compound causes the grains of sand to adhere to one another and form cylinders (to minimize surface area) when exposed to water. As soon as the sand is taken out of water, it is completely dry and flows freely.

These properties are achieved by covering ordinary beach sand, which contains tiny particles of pure silica, and exposing them to vapors of trimethylsilanol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimethylsilanol), an organosilicon compound. Upon exposure, the trimethylsilane compound bonds to the silica particles while forming water. The exteriors of the sand grains are thus coated with hydrophobic groups.

Magic sand was originally developed... more »

In Germany there's no provision for homeschooling. That's bad enough, but this! A very sad article indeed.

Intro: "At 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013, in what has been called a “brutal and vicious act,” a team of 20 social workers, police officers, and special agents stormed a homeschooling family’s residence near #Darmstadt, Germany, forcibly removing all four of the family’s children (ages 7-14). The sole grounds for removal were that the parents, Dirk and Petra Wunderlich, continued to homeschool their children in defiance of a German ban on home education.

The children were taken to unknown locations. Officials ominously promised the parents that they would not be seeing their children “anytime soon." Read on...

Quite appalled by this action!

Flight Delay

It’s a well known law of physics that the speed of light (in a vacuum) is always the same, regardless of your frame of reference (essentially your vantage point).  But this isn’t entirely true.  It actually depends on how you define “speed”.

There are different ways to define speed, which is easy to see if you think about a car.  One way to determine the speed of a car would be to look at the speedometer.  If it says you are travelling 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour), then that is the car’s speed at that moment in time.  We sometimes call this the instantaneous speed.  Another way to determine the car’s speed is to time how long it takes the car to travel a certain distance.  So if we observe the car travel 50 miles in one hour, then we would say its speed if 50 mph.  This is known as an average speed.

So what does this haveto do with the spee... more »

The crisis in Darfur has taken a heavy toll on the local environment. The UN's World Food Programme is helping families tackle this problem by providing them with food in exchange for learning about sustainable farming and market-gardening practice. WFP is also helping them learn how to make fuel-efficient cook-stoves, which consume substantially less fuel than an open fire.

Meet Chengetanai. She lives in Zimbabwe, where her husband is a gold miner, and they have 3 boys, ages 12, 10 and 5. She hopes they will grow up to be doctors or pilots.

To help them achieve their dreams, she uses income from her shop selling clothes to pay their school fees of $30 every term. Her Kiva loan is helping her save even more. Here she is, looking at all the generous lenders who supported her loan on Kiva. She was amazed and so grateful that people from all over the world wanted to help her and her family.

We are biological machines
The DNA replication complex, an assembly of proteins that synthesizes new DNA before cell division.  It consists of helicase, primase, single-strand binding proteins, and dna polymerase III. Because DNA strands can only be copied in one direction, the complex must pull out loops of one strand and replicate it in fragments. At this moment there are hundreds of trillions of these molecular machines in constant activity within your body.

Prove It

If you’ve been following my posts for a while, you’ve occasionally heard me mention a project  I’m a part of known as +Prove Your World.   Prove Your World is a project to present scientific concepts to kids in a way that demonstrates the process of scientific understanding.  The long term goal is to create a television show for 8 - 13 year olds.  One that demonstrates scientific thinking, features scientists as real people not stereotypes, and that empowers children to explore their world.

But for now we want to create a series of science webisodes that are fun, goofy, attention-grabbing, whimsical, inspiring, and useful.  So we’ve started a +Kickstarter  campaign to raise $10,000 for the series.  We think the webisodes will show just how good the TV series could be.

To that end, I’m asking for your help.  If you’d like to contribute, that would be cool.... more »

Right now, 12 students in Kenya are sitting in classes at Strathmore University, but they may not be there for long if their loans don't get funded on Kiva before July 20. These students will not be able to pay tuition if their loans expire. They'll have to return to their home villages, and won't get to go to college after working so hard to get there.

Please consider making a loan to one of these incredible young people today -- and SHARE with your friends and family. Higher education should be a fundamental human right. But until it is, people like you can make the difference.

AeroVelo Human-Powered Helicopter Wins Elusive $250,000 Sikorsky Prize!

“Canadian startup Aerovelo just won the elusive $250,000 Sikorsky Prize with their incredible human-powered helicopter called Atlas! The Sikorsky rules—which were developed when the competition was launched in 1980—are daunting: they require teams to keep their helicopter suspended at least ten feet in the air for a minimum of 60 seconds, and, while there, they must remain within a 30×30 foot boundary. After several failed attempts, AeroVelo’s Todd Reichert and Cameron Robertson finally hit the mark within ten seconds of the competition’s end."

Life free of junk
Settling is a choice. Having an OK life and tolerating things in it just because others do is a choice. You don’t have to bend under the circumstances – you should make them bend around you by taking control over your life and taking responsibility for the choices you make. Life doesn’t suck “just because” - it sucks when you make no effort to make it otherwise.

Sometimes it is as simple as that. Sometimes you just have to let go of what’s holding you back in order to move on to better conditions, conditions you will feel more comfortable in and feel happier. You don’t have to live a life where at every turn you suppress your own happiness in order to maintain the status quo. Sometimes, your life needs a catharsis.

[Most likely] Have to go:
Toxic people. It can even be your “friends” or people you are used to interacting withjust because you ... more »
