The head of the ruling Communist Party in China, Xi Jinping, has called his new doctrine the “Chinese dream” evoking its American equivalent. But what exactly is Mr Xi’s vision? It seems to include some American-style aspiration, which is welcome, but also a troubling whiff of nationalism and of repackaged authoritarianism http://econ.st/140xqPT

VIDEO: President Obama kills at the WHCA Dinner

This was hysterical:

THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you.  (Applause.)  Thank you, everybody.  (Laughter.)  How do you like my new entrance music?  (Applause.)  Rush Limbaugh warned you about this -- second term, baby.  (Laughter and applause.)  We’re changing things around here a little bit.  (Laughter.)

Actually, my advisors were a little worried about the new rap entrance music.  (Laughter.)  They are a little more traditional.  They suggested that I should start with some jokes at my own expense, just take myself down a peg.  I was like, guys, after four and a half years, how many pegs are there left?  (Laughter.)

I want to thank the White House Correspondents.  Ed, you’re doing an outstanding job.  We are grateful for -- (applause) -- the great work you’ve done.  To all the dignitaries whoare here, everybody on ... more »

Have you ever wondered why alcohol makes a cut hurt? Other liquid substances, like water, don’t cause pain when applied to cuts. The answer lies in the lowering of VR1 receptors. VR1 receptors are a special kind of cell in your skin that respond to heat.

Studies have shown that ethanol–which is a kind of alcohol–causes skin cells to put out the same neurochemical signals they put out when heat is around. The result is that it doesn’t take as much actual heat for the VR1′s to turn on. Researchers have found that alcohol lowers the amount of heat needed to turn on VR1 receptors by almost ten degrees.

It isn’t known for sure yet, but researchers think that ethanol may lower the threshold so much around inflamed tissue that your own body temperature kicks off the VR1 receptors. Not only does the cut hurt, but it now feels like its on fire as well.

New Plasma Device Considered The ‘Holy Grail’ Of Energy Generation And Storage

Scientists at the University of Missouri have devised a new way to create and control plasma that could transform energy generation and storage.

Randy Curry, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Missouri’s College of Engineering, and his team developed a device that launches a ring of plasma at distances of up to two feet. Although the plasma reaches a temperature hotter than the surface of the sun, it doesn’t emit radiation and is completely safe in proximity to humans.

While most of us are familiar with three states of matter – liquid, gas and solid – there is also a fourth state known as plasma, which includes things such as fire and lightning. Life on Earth depends on the energy emitted by plasma produced during fusion reactions within thesun.

I hadn't realized that Gallium could do this. Basically the gallium is insinuating itself into the metal lattice of the other metal, in this case aluminum, which weakens it and makes it brittle. What I find interesting is how far the gallium diffuses; we're not used to thinking of metals as porous conductors of fluids.

Aluminum gallium arsenide is a semiconductor, incidentally.

Wall Street Journal calls Ingress "Geeky" :-)

Geeks:

1.  Explore the real world with Ingress on their Android phones.
2.  Find cool new places and learn the history of their town.
3.  Refresh themselves with delicious infused 'Hint' water.
4.  Meet interesting real people at real-world meetups.
5.  Share their enthusiasm on Google+.

Non-geeks:

1.  Sit on their couch tapping on virtual birds or corn seeds with their non-Android devices.
2.  Drink large sugary beverages.
3.  Look for updates from their "friends" on other social networks.

Non-geeks, come on over, it's better over here :-)
