The Living Room - Behind The Scenes

Here's a BTS view of the living room +Jake Johnson and I set up last night at Kerry Park. Two flashes behind umbrellas, and one flash inside the lampshade (thank you gaffer tape!), all wirelessly triggered.

This was such a fun shoot! We totally need to do this again, Jake.

The Basilica of Saint Mary
Minneapolis, MN

In the middle of the city, the skyline is cut by the steeple of the first Basilica established in the USA. I had no idea when I walked inside how magnificent the main hall of this building would be. I remember walking down the middle of the hall, looking up in awe at the size, detail, and beauty of this sacred place. It was spellbinding to stand inside this building.

Even though I don't use Photoshop, I still don't agree with Adobe denying their customers the choice to own or rent their product and forcing them into a certain flavour of their software.

Now you can make your voice heard if you disagree, too. There's a petition to sign if you're so inclined.

Stranded In A Tidepool

I spent a week on the big island of Hawaii back in January to escape the winter of Seattle in favour of warmer weather. It was a wonderful week of photographing, relaxing, and hanging out with turtles. :)

What a great day!
Thanks to everyone who made it out yesterday to the photo walk under the shadow of the Space Needle at the Seattle Center. We had a great turnout for the walk, ending with a very pretty sunset up at Kerry Park. Stay tuned for details on the next walk some time during June...

Anyone on here use fstop camera bags? They seem to be having some supply issues on the ICUs (the part of the bag that holds all the camera gear) and I would love to have a Loka bag to use on an upcoming trip.

The bag is in stock on their website, but I will probably need to borrow a large pro ICU or two small pro ICUs, since their supply won't be back in stock until after I leave. Does anyone have one that I can borrow in mid-June for a couple of weeks?

Imagine Dragons, Live in Portland OR.

This one is my favourite image from the show. The singer had just broken his drumstick, and handed it right to the people in the crowd behind me. I crouched down, and grabbed this shot of the fans reaching out to him. I love the look on the singer's face.

The Milky Way, A Meteor, And A Cabin Walk Into A Bar - Mt. Shasta, CA

On Saturday, +Joe Azure +Natalia Stone +Casey McCallister and +Eric Leslie drove up to Mount Shasta to look for a cool place to photograph the annual Lyrid Meteor Shower. We stumbled upon this awesome little spot, where we could easily photograph the Milky Way and Mt. Shasta in the same frame....but we had to wait until 3:50AM when the moon set. I took a number of exposures, but this one had the best meteor trail out of all of them. Another weekend of 40+ hours without sleep...but it was all worth it (Minus the curious horses knocking over our timelapse rigs at 3:00AM)

And yes, this is my very first photo of the Milky Way. What was I waiting for?

My Dad was in Seattle this past weekend and I was able to find some time for us to wander around the city and teach him a little bit about photography. It was a lot of fun to explain some of the concepts and the fundamentals to him.

This is one of the images I made while walking around the city, on Seattle's Queen Anne hill. I fully expected not to be able to shoot the cherry blossoms this year... so running into this row of trees was a fun surprise :)

Spring has sprung, and it's time to get out and get shooting! Join +Jake Johnson, +Jacob Lucas, and +Michael Riffle at the Seattle Center for the first +Seattle Photowalk of the year!

We'll meet at the International Fountain for a group photo at 3 PM, and from there walk around chatting and shooting the sights of the center--including the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden, and the EMP. Afterwards (around 6ish) we can go out for food and drink, and the die hards can meet up at Kerry Park for sunset.

All skill levels are welcome! Come out and meet some of your fellow plussers, and put some faces to those +Names. :)

The Sound of White

Very often I see a particular scene in front of me and I'm reminded of song lyrics. Sometimes the scene morphs and becomes a memory from my life. Sometimes the lyrics serve as inspiration for the image. Both of these were the case for this photograph. The lyrics are from a song called "The Sound of White" by Missy Higgins, an Australian singer-songwriter whose music I immensely admire and enjoy.

Ruby Beach
Pacific Coastline, Washington State

Ruby Beach is one of those locations on the Olympic Peninsula that I try to visit each time I’m there. It’s so accessible from the highway, and because of tides and swell the landscape on the beach changes quite a bit. The level of water up on the beach remaining in tide pools or small rivers turned into ponds from a retreating shoreline create some pretty wonderful elements to work with in photography.

The Winding Sol Duc River
Olympic National Park, Washington State

I think this short and peaceful hike through to the Sol Duc Falls may well be one of my most favourite hikes of all time. Around every turn is something spectacular to experience, like this little creek about half way along the trail to Sol Duc Falls. I wandered out into the creek, set up my shot as the water gently flowed over my feet, and made this photograph. I'll never forget this - it's one of the more peaceful and beautiful memories I have, just being here in and amongst the forest. I absolutely love it!

Emerald City Sunrise

The warmer and fairer weather is slowly starting to return to Seattle. Glimpses of Spring are starting to show in the streets, with flowers beginning to bloom and the days getting longer. That seemingly permanent cloud bank that perches itself over Seattle for the winter is starting to fade away. It’s still coming and going, but when it’s gone the days are simply wonderful to experience.

Masking is fun! An +onOne Software makes it really easy to selectively apply adjustments to select areas of your image with the Perfect Brush. This mask allows me to edit the city skyline independently of the sculpture foreground, and was created very easily by casually painting with the Perfect Brush inside Perfect Effects.

This image is WIP... can't wait to see how it turns out :)

An Arctic Sunset

Even though I was only there for a short time last year, Iceland is a country that immediately fascinated me. The people were so very friendly and warm, and the landscape of the country was phenomenally beautiful. One of the days I was there I spent some time driving down around the southern coastline. The main highway is quite drivable, but the best thing about it is that you can't go too far before running into some amazing mountain, road, or waterfall. There's an understated purity and beauty about this land that words cannot convey.
