The city wears a slouch hat is one of those Cage works that many know about, but few have actually heard. Commissioned by CBS' "Columbia Workshop" to accompany a radio play by "Beat" poet/writer Kenneth Patchen--a surreal script centered around a mysterious drifter known as "The Voice" and his encounters with various characters of the urban landscape. Cage's music aptly fits Patchen's texts, scored for "sound orchestra" of 5 percussionists along with live and recorded sound effects, revealing Cage's gift for orchestrating the timbres of percussion. One can only imagine what unsuspecting families, seated around the radio for an evening's entertainment, made of this bizarre script and rambunctious music in 1942!

Congrats to Ibrahim Sy! He recently was awarded the MCC Board of Trustees Scholarship. He will be using this renewable scholarship to complete his specialized Associate’s Degree in Computer Sciences at MCC-Penn Valley and will then transfer to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Sciences at UMKC.

New York City is trying to lead the way in public health initiatives. Part of this initiative is city wide bike share program. The catch is you can only ride the bike if you are less than 260 pounds, meaning the people who need to bike the most are banned from the program.

The reason for the ban is wear and tear on the bikes. Yet a number of cyclists and bike shop owners have said that that the hefty frames on the bikes used in the program should be adequate to support someone who weighs 260 pounds. In any event, it turns out that DC and Boston have similar weight policies for their city wide bike share programs.

NYC doubles fines for electric bike riding to $1K
Electric bikes have been illegal in the entire state of New York since 2004. The reason that NYC is stepping up the fine is due to supposed numerous complaints of pedestrians nearly being hit on the congested NYC streets, and bike lanes, by delivery men using electric bikes which can reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour. David Pollack from the Committee for Taxi Safety went so far to say the bikes “a menace to little children” and a “menace to society”.

Making your own files inaccessible without a current subscription seems unreasonable and extortive. No matter how their marketing department spins it, Adobe's sales and licensing departments have lost their bearings. There are better ways to reclaim piracy loss and protect against future piracy that don't involve holding loyal customers' files hostage.
It's conceivable Adobe could change course, and it's likely to at least tweak the subscription offer. Senior Product Manager John Nack said Adobe is considering Creative Cloud changes so their files don't become completely inaccessible when their subscriptions end..

Objections to the subscriptions plan focus chiefly on higher fees for those who don't upgrade often. Another problem is that customers won't be able to do anything with their files unless they pay the subscription fee.

According to Japan's NHK News, the wind turbine will be 154 feet above sea level and the tidal turbine will have a diameter of about 50 feet. The two sections will be connected by a power generator, the Japanese news agency reports.
NHK News sources say that the turbine will be tested in the fall. Once operational, the turbine could generate enough energy to power about 300 households, the news agency reports.

TV Rant: ABC's Wipeout
Happened to look up at the stream when +marie lampi mentioned she was about to catch +Juliana Reed on tonight's episode of Wipeout. (Don't worry, I won't spoil it for those who may have recorded the show for later).
Now, to be honest, I've only seen this show a couple of times, and that was primarily to catch a glimpse of Jill Wagner (btw, SPOILER ALERT: her awesome 70's-style top in this episode).
John Henson is okay (he also kind of looks like my brother), but that other guy...uh, he must be the executive producer's son or something. I can't figure out why/how he has an on-camera job at all.
