On the heels of the big "97% scientific consensus on climate change" news splash this week, +Andrew Revkin just published a post about the other science gap: http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/17/the-other-climate-science-gap/?smid=tw-dotearth&seid=auto
+Dan Kahan is quoted, saying
Climate scientists aren’t the only ones whose message never gets through. The “science of science communication consensus” that deficits in knowledge & rationality are not the problem — 99.9999999% agree! — never does either, & to the very people it should be of value too, viz., those trying to promote constructive engagement w/ climate science. Is there someone studying that science communication problem???!
Do go read Dan's whole post, including the comment thread, it's useful: http... more »

Yesterday I talked about the importance of a community of practice for science communication - the idea that we need a strong network to share successes and failures, to support each other, and to challenge each other to be better. (http://bit.ly/scicommunity)
One of those challenges was to get familiar with the research literature on science communication, and the scioSciComm community is one attempt to do so.
Hope you'll join us for virtual journal clubs and more.

Yesterday, I had a guest post at Nature's SoapBox Science blog. It is a bit of a manifesto, and I hope it pushes us forward. I was specifically thinking of this group (and I mention it).
Would love to hear the thoughts and ideas this may have sparked for you. http://blogs.nature.com/soapboxscience/2013/05/15/science-communication-at-a-tipping-point#more-4362
For more on what I mean by 'community of practice' - see Falk et al (2011) http://pus.sagepub.com/content/21/7/865 (paywall, sorry)

We'll be putting the tough questions to ourselves: why are we doing this? where do we want to be a year from now? what is our most effective path forward. Come prepared to brainstorm and share

You may have seen this in my other channels, but our commentary piece came out in PLOS Biology this week (http://bit.ly/COMPASSreachingoutsci - I'm the corresponding author).
It's a Community Page, which means the point is to talk about who COMPASS is and what we do, but we wanted to go broader than that. We wrote the paper to share our own lessons in scicomm over the past decade and kick off a bigger discussion about where we go from here.
I organized a mini blog carnival for scientists to talk about their personal stories, experiences, and tough lessons in #scicomm. So far, there are contributions from +Alan Townsend, +Chris Buddle, Don Boesch, +Dawn Wright, +Heather Leslie, Isabelle Côté, Jim Cloern, +Jessica Hellmann, Max Moritz, Ryan Kelly, +Simon Donner, +Steve Palumbi and more to come.
You can watch this unfold on twitter with the #reachingoutsci hasht... more »

Hi all,
Have been toying with scheduling, and want to float Tuesday May 7 at 4:30pm PT for our next hangout. Unless I hear a howl of dismay, we'll go with that. I'll confirm on Wednesday and we need to start selecting our next paper.

Had some fun with my latest blog post, asking the question: do scientists have a different news diet than average people? Does it matter if they do? http://bit.ly/XsDq2M
We have a little bit of data from surveys we collect in advance of each communications training. The researchers I know best are NPR/NYT/DailyShow fans, and this dinky little analysis raised so many fascinating questions. If you guys know anyone who studies this or would like to, please introduce me!

Really enjoyed this piece by +Emily Finke - "There is a profound ignorance in “common knowledge”. Mine was in assuming I knew how an engine worked. And my ignorance wasn’t fixed by a “how car engines work” post. It was fixed by a somewhat-unrelated intellectual tangent. I would have been horribly affronted had someone told me that I don’t understand this huge force of modern life, because what kind of idiot doesn’t understand cars?" http://www.thisview.org/?p=107
This is what inspires me to think hard about information deficit model approaches to science communication.

Really excited to start talking about this project publicly! http://bit.ly/GradSciCommSurvey
In short, I'm a co-PI on a new NSF project, tasked with surveying the current state of communication training for science grad students across the country, and then bringing together the best people to talk about how to systemically improve it.
We're inspired by the unmet demand we see, and the fabulous grassroots and institutional efforts to create change.
Calling all grad students who have taken a course or workshop, and all those who organize them: please get in touch or add your data to our brief survey here: http://bit.ly/GradSciCommSurvey

Hello everyone! Last night I hosted our first Science of Science Communication hangout. Thanks to all who participated for a really interesting discussion and proof of concept for virtual journal clubs. The video is here - http://bit.ly/scioSciComm1vid, and see twitter hashtags #scioscicomm and #scioscicomms (sorry for confusion).
I'd like to open up a debrief discussion and talk about how we might improve format, delivery, etc. Please share your thoughts here:

Brushing up on Google+ hangouts on air logistics for tomorrow's #scioscicomm journal club - https://plus.google.com/u/1/events/ci5k0u8k4o4tf8n69s1erso66os
Deep thanks +Fraser Cain his fantastic post https://plus.google.com/+FraserCain/posts/PaeeynDx34L
However:
"When you know when your event is going to happen, you'll want to schedule a public event so people can put it into their calendars. Make sure you select Advanced options -> On Air Event. Then invite the public to the event. http://www.google.com/+/learnmore/events/
Make sure you don't choose "Hangout", that will create a trap that puts people into the wrong location."
Oh Google+... sigh.

This event was deleted by a calendar syncing problem. We're still on as planned at 4:30pm Pacific Time Wednesday March 20. A small group of us will be on live video conference - everyone else will watch & chat via Google+ Hangouts on Air, and we hope to rotate some of the video spots open. Please invite anyone in your circles who you think might enjoy joining.
We are reading and discussing Anderson et al (2012) "Crude Comments and Concern: Online Incivility's Effect on Risk Perceptions of Emerging Technologies"
Google+ Events do not currently allow threaded comments except on photos, so I've added two: one for questions about logistics and one to begin collecting questions for discussion. I'll add more as we need them.
Looking forward to this experiment in the communication of the science of science communication! :)

At +ScienceOnline on my session on the Deficit Model, I made a joke about being a recovering Deficit Model addict ("Hi, I'm Liz...)
Yesterday +Karen James called me on it: https://twitter.com/kejames/status/307966117530447873 We've been talking and DMing on Twitter. She is right - it was a cheap joke. I like to think of myself as savvy and sensitive; a good ally. But I just hadn't thought about my own privilege in this.
It's good to stop and think, and make course corrections when needed. Thanks to Karen, apologies for an ill-considered analogy, and my promise to be more thoughtful in the future.

Talked at a lot about Google+ at #AGU12 but almost exclusively used twitter while I was there. Whipped up a blog post on the flight back about my favorite ways people use live-tweeting to enhance science meetings: http://compassblogs.org/blog/2012/12/10/wading-into-a-conference-tweet-stream/

Lots of great info in here:
"excavation of scientific papers' usually hidden prepublication trajectories from journal to journal"
** Nature and Science publish a greater percentage of papers previously submitted elsewhere than lower impact journals
** 75% of papers get published in the journal to which they're first submitted
** 3–6 years after publication, resubmitted papers are more highly cited on average than papers accepted first try in the same journal
So here's some evidence that peer review works, but it's not evidence that the current way we do it is the best way. I'm waiting for an analysis looking at pre-vs. post publication review on article impact metrics.

Hello to everyone who's recently added me!
What's at the top of my mind right now is the Ocean Health Index - http://www.oceanhealthindex.org/
I'm really proud to be a collaborator on the Nature paper that came out last week (never thought I'd get to say that!) - it's unfortunately behind the paywall, but you can see the abstract here:http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nature11397.html I'm at your service if you'd like to request a reprint ;), and all the data layers are available from http://ohi.nceas.ucsb.edu/index.html. One of my favorite pieces is the interactive visual by +Scientific American, where you can browse the scores for every coastal country in the world and see how the sub-components of the Index fit together: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=new-ocean-health-index-shows-clean-water-poor-management

Inspired by our June +SciLingual hangout and +Jerry Nguyen's #leavingacademia posts lately, I just posted my thoughts and some hard-won advice to those who think that science communication may be their career path.
Would LOVE to continue the conversation here, there, or on twitter. If we talk all the time, if we're total strangers, I don't care. This is very dear to my heart - I want to hear your thoughts and help if I can.

Focused on "science of science communication" this week. These papers are occasionally hilarious!
"The abstracts were fictitious... The first described a dry article about research on structure-mapping and systematicity in linguistics, whereas the second described an article about the various issues involved in capital punishment policy. All but 2 participants chose to read the capital punishment article." Ok so far so good
"In response to the 2 less cooperative participants," What?! They're cooperating! They're just geeks!
"the experimenter fumbled through papers and folders, cursed a research assistant for having misplaced the linguistics article, and asked whether the participant would consider read ing the capital punishment article instead."
So, is someone out there teaching Improv for... more »

In yet another genius +Ed Yong post, my jaw dropped at this line:
"In the US Civil war, soldiers were sometimes contaminated with P.luminescens, which gave their wounds a mysterious blue shine and protected them from blood poisoning – they called it the “angel’s glow”'
Wildly curious, I immediately started searching for more on that. It's FASCINATING http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/122477

SciLingual Hangout #5: Getting to know you! June 26th @ 6PM PT
We're going to do something slightly different with this Hangout! I (+Jerry Nguyen) would like to introduce you to a #realwomanofscience , the fabulous +Liz Neeley. As part of this Hangout, I'll be interviewing Liz about her career trajectory, interesting science news, and whatever other topics she wants to talk about.
Turnabout is fair play, so she'll have the opportunity to ask me about my life as a Pottery Barn window decorator and my short stint as an in-flight male stripper...or not.
Of course, the real fun starts when we open up the Hangout for everyone to join in the fun. Do you have a unique science career trajectory? Are there any topics that cross with science that interest you? Bring your questions, comments, and silly anecdotes. We want to hear 'em!
