I've joined Silicon Valley Data Science — I'm happy to announce that I've joined Silicon Valley Data Science as VP of Strategy.
I'm excited as we build an all-star team of data scientists and data engineers to take on interesting and difficult problems. It's all about using data in a smart way to create new capabilities and amplify existing ones.
I'll also be continuing as chair of Strata and Editor in Chief of Big Data.
Why the new gig?
Because being a part of inventing the future is irresistible.
My career with technology has always been about helping people do more and better. In tech, we're at a time of such phenomenally exciting change, for both people as individuals and businesses. Smart use of data, more than anything, has the ability to focus and multiply our potential as humans.
It's a... more »

Why the new GMail tabs don't work for me (but I'm not very normal)
It's neat that +Jason Cornwell was listening to me kvetch on Twitter a little about the new tabs in Gmail. He asked for expansion, so I thought I'd write it here. 140 chars not a great place for it, really.
So, first thing to say is: I'm an outlier. I actually think the new tabs are a really good match for how a lot of people use email. I am also thrilled to see innovation around email of any sort.
The main issue for me is the way I deal with my email. I'm "inbox zero" oriented, so my workflow is something like this: as much non-direct email as possible is filtered and I check it at leisure. The rest I read and either reply right away, or star for follow up then archive. Nothing stays long in inbox.

The registration of the new gTLDs is interesting. Here, for instance, is what Dish Network intend to do with the ".dot" TLD: get around domain/typo squatting by operating its own TLD over which it has unique control.
Fuller details copied here and at the link below
• The Internet has been plagued by cybersquatting, typosquatting, phishing, pharming and identity theft scams. This malicious online conduct has shaken the trust and confidence of consumers to share information and transact business online. Thus, the proposed .DOT gTLD has the following user experience goals:
o Unify the full breadth of products and services offered by Applicant and its affiliated entities under one brand umbrella;
o Improve and streamline the manner in which customers and other business partners can interact with Applicant and its affiliated entities in the online digital spa... more »

Rückkehrunruhe
n. the feeling of returning home after an immersive trip only to find it fading rapidly from your awareness—to the extent you have to keep reminding yourself that it happened at all, even though it felt so vivid just days ago—which makes you wish you could smoothly cross-dissolve back into everyday life, or just hold the shutter open indefinitely, letting one scene become superimposed on the next, so all your days run together and you never have to call cut.

Balisage is an annual conference devoted to the theory and practice of descriptive markup and related technologies for structuring and managing information. Participants typically include XML users, librarians, archivists, computer scientists, XSLT and XQuery programmers, implementers of XSLT and XQuery engines and other markup-related software, Topic-Map enthusiasts, semantic-Web evangelists, members of the working groups which define the specifications, academics, industrial researchers, representatives of governmental bodies and NGOs, industrial developers, practitioners, consultants, and the world's greatest concentration of markup theorists. Discussion is open, candid, and unashamedly technical.

+Chris Wiggins interviewed in IEEE Spectrum
"I will agree with what Jim Gray of Microsoft said years ago, which is that every field of human endeavor is being progressively transformed by abundant data. So both because there are more data available, the data are cheaper to store and transmit, and there’s easy access to data, and that’s changing every field of human endeavor, both in the academy and industry. So fluency in data science is an actual investment."

How can government help realize the economic and social benefits of big data?
+Neelie Kroes's speech on the economic and social benefits of big data to Europe. She calls out ways in which the EU and politicians can support big data:
"First, regulation. We need a set of rules that maximise the value and minimise the cost of data. Making it freely available for re-use, and freely flowing across Europe. Without compromising on fairness, transparency, or user control."
"Secondly, unlocking this data needs people's trust. So we need a data protection framework that builds that confidence and permits that digital innovation."
"Innovative data products and services need interoperability, standardisation, and where possible harmonised formats. Otherwise, the data is there in theory, but it's just too difficult to fit together... more »

Phones become commodity, value is in the cloud
Interesting quote from LG official on their not planning to make any more Nexus phones: [[ Wong said that Google phones have "no added value for us without our own skins." ]]
Turn that around, I think it's pretty obvious from the iPhone and the Nexus 4 that manufacturer-added "skins" add little or no value for the customer. LG's comments sound to me like the protestations of a dying model trying to lock-in relevance.
Phones are headed to commodity, and there's nothing they can do about it. The value to customers is in the cloud services.

My second opinion post on Medium: When Democratization Isn't a Good Thing -- the PC era has a lot to answer for
"I want everybody to have the power computers offer, but I don’t think we should make everyone into a programmer to achieve that. “Democratization of programming” is a positive-sounding term that actually means making humans do grunt work that computers ought to do themselves."

The new locations feature in the Google+ app lets you select a circle to share your location with. I've been selective with mine, but a few people like +Leo Laporte are sharing more openly.
It's a bit confusing on Android right now as the maps app still includes Latitude and checkins.

Feeling a bit better about #hangouts now…
I like the "Snooze notifications" feature. This actually makes a bit more sense than managing my "available/away" status.
The stored history is great, mirrored over every machine, and being able to jump into and drop out of a video call again is handy (I upgraded a text chat to screen sharing in a Hangout to help solve a problem).
I created an image from inside the hangout (screen snap) and that appeared in a gallery attached to the hangout in the G+ stream. I was impressed by that: it suggests that hangouts could be trusted for archived collaboration.

Removing presence indicators from the mobile version of #hangouts is a real problem. I'm not sure how this was omitted. Maybe all Googlers are online all the time?
It wouldn't be as annoying a regression if I could use in parallel with Google Talk. Being a good user, I've used the send feedback function to report this...
