Traveling until Tuesday

I am off to delivery a painting to a new collector today and for a few days on the west coast of Vancouver Island. So you will not hear much if anything from until Tuesday morning. Have a great rest of your week and a fine weekend.

Until later!

aspiring architect

The afternoon slips passed me in a haze of overexposed summer light from a mottled sky. My bags are packed. Groceries are bought stored and prepared for the person staying home. There is anticipation for an upcoming five-day trip beginning tomorrow midday. I am restless with not enough time to start a new project but too much time to just curled up with a book. So I decided to take a browse through a few of the set aside but unedited images from last month. This is where the work of an anonymous architect was rediscovered. I love these random half-creations that accent our beaches from time to time. They are usually found after long weekends when city dwellers come and have yet to learn the power of imitating the seals lounging on the sun-warmed  sandstone. Roses for Friends - paintography

There is a local farmer who has beautiful rose stems for sale at a roadside stand this time of year. I picked out ten and slipped two fives into the lock-box as required. When I got them home I went out and snipped salal and ferns from the yard to build an arrangement to take with us when we went to friends for dinner. Maybe if there are still some of these roses next week I will get a bunch for me and pull out a canvas to render them forever freshly cut.

All the best of Wednesday to you!

Private and Public life - does the boundary exist in an online world?

Today, I sort through what image to share with self-conscious need and commitment to say “hello” to the outside online world where my daily visit is anticipated and to some degree expected. That is, if I don’t show up after a few days there are those who will come looking to make sure I am okay. This is likely to occur faster than anyone will notice I am missing in my physical community. Admittedly there is some overlap yet there is a speed to a facebook timeline update, a twitter tweet or a Google plus update that defies the now-rather-intimate telephone call. What does this mean to my creative process, my dividing line between private and public life? Where is that line? Does it exist?

The line appears to be clearly defined for me in what is shared and not shared. This is easy. I have a clearintent... more »

This morning's painting...

A Gift of Roses - resting 12 x 12 inch oil on canvas

This #workinprogress is far too shiny and wet and it is way too early in the morning to take a respectable photograph. But I decided it could as easily rest with you as it does with me.

I find painting roses or any vase of flowers challenging. It is not the technical aspect of the painting of them but the reality of trying to get through the gazillion painted translations that overlay what I see right in front of me with my own eyes. I do not seem to have this same driving need to remove internalized filters when I am painting our landscapes. They are somehow so much more my own and the language of the landscape and my own are much more direct and mutually understood. These roses I had to observe with much more attention to keep the visual memories of the middle painters from telling... more »

Stop feeding the WOW-smacked dragon!

Yesterday's morning walk provided this one image with the only hint of soft sunlight we saw all day. It is not very exciting and in fact, it is very ordinary - just a bit of soft sunlight coming through the cedar trees on a path in the woods. The image has not been heavily edited and rendered and is truly the ordinary of the ordinary everyday anywhere one might find a path in the woods. So why might I share it with you then?

Well, I have been reading here and there how people are feeling bad, sad and insignificant when they visit their "friends" on social media. They are mumbling about how their lives just don't measure up as being as successful, exciting or happy as these other streams of wall, tweet, circle, blog postings. And since I have been recovering from a miserable cold I have had lots of time to muse about these... more »

Today's painting study...

End of Storm Georgina Point Mayne Island - resting 8 x 10 oil on canvas

Still too shiny and wet to really photograph and possibly will make some edits later but for now it is resting. Often I find the most freedom in painting these small works because the risks are so much less than an adventure on a large canvas. I love the smashing resistance of waves against the rocks - neither land nor sea willing to give in easily.

Island with the Lighthouse 8 x 10 inch oil on canvas

The southern gulf islands are not always easy to name individually if you are unfamiliar with how they relate to one another. Mayne Island is often described as the island with the lighthouse as it is viewed from the ferry traveling from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island. This small window to the sea is what you might view on a fine day from that ferry as you near the entrance to Active Pass.

Dead Wood

There is a point after death that it seems we become something else. The steer becomes steak. The lettuce becomes salad. The tree becomes dead wood. If we care to look, we can often imagine the subject’s former living structure. With the steak I prefer not to go there and even with the lettuce it is best not to wonder if it noticed being pulled up by the roots for our dining pleasure. But with the fallen tree, I often imagine. I wonder how long it has been laying there. I wonder what was the precise moment that we understood that this former tree is now dead wood.

* Aiguille du Midi, France* ... Amusing Planet - "The Aiguille du Midi is a 3,842 meter tall mountain in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps. The name "Aiguille du Midi" translates literally to "Needle of the Noon" or "Needle of the Mid-day". The mountain gets its name from the fact that it lies to the south when viewed from in front of the church in Chamonix.

A cable car runs to the summit where there is a viewing platform, a café and a gift shop. The cable car was built in 1955 and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3842 m.

The Aiguille du Midi lift was first thought of by two Swiss engineers in 1905. Their plan was to link the hamlet of Les Pelerins with the summit of l'Aiguille du Midi. The project met... more »

Today's work...

Reaching the Sea resting a 2nd time 30 x 40 inch oil on canvas

A year a go in January I thought I was done with this painting. But within a few months I knew we were not finished. Still, I set it aside and even showed it last summer for a while. Eventually, I just turned its face to the wall and waited. Today was the day. Around and round we went untangling and tangling up again within the tension of land sea and sky.

Here is where we have come to rest at the moment. I hesitate to say it is done but it could be... or it could be a #workinprogress indefinitely :)

Oh! If you are curious here is the Creative Potager post with where I left it last January:

Today's work...

An Edgy Kinda day

Painting the edges of my larger paintings is a little like cleaning closets for me - it has to be right kind of day. We are on... I forget how many... straight days of misty warm spring-time rain.

I finished packaging and shipped a painting this morning that had sold to a collector in California. I released a new painting over at +Terrill Welch Fine Arts Then I wandered across the studio and did some small edits on yesterday's study. And then... I started on edges. Only one really large and one just large painting left to go for now.

There is a promise of a wee bit of sun tomorrow - it won't be an edge-painting kind of day I am thinking ;)

Pileated Woodpecker foraging for grubs

These are large crow-sized woodpeckers are listed as uncommon in my bird book. I am not so sure this is the case as much as they are usually extremely shy. I can only assume this is a young fellow and he was more interested in the grubs than my proximity. These are also the woodpeckers that make the loud laughing sound like the cartoon character Woody.

This one is throwing moss and dirt like mad trying to catch up to his breakfast.

Seaside Trail Mayne Island

One of my favourite trails on Mayne Island follows the sea down both sides of a point of private land. The landowners have given local residents permission to hike here but you will not find the trail marked on any map. For this reason, I most often leave the location unnamed. It is a privilege not a right to be able to enjoy this particular piece of earth. I am most grateful. This is the Strait of Georgia side of the trail where the waves visit with you the whole stretch as you watch your footing so as not to trip and end up going for an unplanned and not very safe swim.

All the best of Sunday to you!

The Settling

While I was waiting for the moon to rise last evening in the east there was a settling of time over the sea. The defining shapes of the landscape began to recede into darkness. Birds were making their last calls before roosting in the nearby trees. A full tide slapped lazily against the shore as the warmth of the day was brushed aside with the whisper of a breeze. These are moments of forgiveness.

From Felix Jack Road Mayne Island - resting 11 x 14 inch oil on canvas  - plein air

Well here it is. There is a magic to this spot that is extremely difficult to translate. As I was standing on the side of the road painting today, I think I discovered what is so difficult. You see, the drive from the ferry terminal at Village Bay to this spot is heavily treed. Once a person turns onto Felix Jack Road this view becomes visible. It is not that this view is so incredibly spectacular in itself. Rather, it is spectacular because the view is shrouded in the tall trees until getting here. None the less, I like this spot and painting it is a good way to enjoy the view.

But I will take its yellow face beaming down on me even on a snuggle-in-and-snooze-a-little-longer day. It is Friday. Today's work...

winter sun II resting 18 x 24 inch oil on canvas

Actually, I started working on this yesterday or possibly it might be more accurate to say three years ago. The underpainting for this painting is a winter sunrise that fell out of my favour. Since it was still in the studio, this is what happened to it!

I suppose it really doesn't need to be in the #workinprogress folder as I have no intention of doing anything other than taking a better photograph once it is dry. However, I felt this way about the painting study I shared yesterday too. Then I got up this morning and made some edits. So, just in case, I am giving myself permission to tweak as necessary.

Today's #workinprogress ...

remembering an untold mystery resting 10 x 10 inch oil on canvas

Now this one is definitely best viewed from a distance. Get up from whatever device you are using that is bigger than a smartphone and step back 3 to 6 feet. I promise you won't be disappointed.

It reminds me of a very strong memory I have from grade three when a boy in the next row looked at my drawing of "the bush" with a fawn next to it looking longingly at a garden and said with absolute disgust "What a mess! You didn't draw anything. It is all just scribbles!" So I took him and my hurt feelings farther down the row of desks from where all the drawings were pinned on the classroom wall. Then I said "look again." He did and though still not terribly impressed he could see how all those lines gave the impressions of trees, grasses,... more »
