While Primus was in the hospital, I ate most of my meals by sneaking out alone (so that he didn't have to watch me eat, and one of us was always with him). During that time, I did a lot of reading. The book I read was Old Man's War, by John Scalzi. It is a fun, modern sci-fi book that evokes Heinlein in tone, but unlike Heinlein, has a fairly satisfying ending. For some reason, it is currently $2.99 for Kindle, or through Google books. I highly recommend it.

Good morning, Pluskatopians!
What wonderful, exciting things are on your agenda today? I woke up this morning, pondering a deep and super important question. (If you know me, you know by now that when I say that I don't mean it.)
How often do you charge your cell phone battery? I now have a Droid Razr Maxx, and it really only needs a charge every other day (unless it's getting serious use, or searching for a signal all day /cough #balticon /cough). I got up this morning, having not plugged it in at all since night before last, and it's at 56%. But, the interwebs are telling me that newer phones don't need a full discharge, that they're designed the way most people use them: to get a partial charge whenever you're near a charger.
Apparently I'm the only one still asking this question, because most of the articles I could find were at least 2... more »

I blame you, Pluskatopians, for making me a techsnob... I saw this story on twitter, someone said, "If you're using Yahoo Mail, change your password." My immediate thought was, "If you're using Yahoo Mail, don't."

Know what makes an excellent super-quick dinner? Pita pizzas.
We were in the pool last night until almost 7, which is when we usually start the bedtime routine, so we needed a quick dinner. Slice open a pita, add tomato sauce and mozzarella for the boys, and voila, cheese pizzas. The adult pizzas were one white (with the good EVOO and freshly grated Parmesan), one pepperoni, with lots of fresh herbs from the garden. So good, and so easy.
I do 10 minutes in the toaster oven at about 375, but basically you just watch until the cheese melts.

The good tired.
You know that feeling you get when you worked hard, all day, doing something you enjoy doing? That. I was out in my garden by 10am, weeding, pulling up the peas to make room for the boys' watermelon and pumpkins, raking in compost, mulching, putting grass clippings under the strawberries... and then around 2 my loves asked me to get in the pool, so how could I turn them down? About an hour of lounging and playing, and then I came inside to rinse a huge batch of tie-dye. It is almost ready to go into the washing machine for its first wash.
Yep. The good tired. I have it. Also, insane curls from sweat/sun/pool water. =)

Mars Curiosity Rover Is The Next LEGO CUUSOO Set!
A great choice by LEGO I think. It's a comparatively small set which should keep it affordable. It touches on the excitement people have had over the Curiosity Rover mission. And it doesn't rely on a license.
Incidentally this LEGO model was designed by an engineer who actually worked at NASA on the rover itself!

Fascinating and beautiful teardown of Google Glass. Interesting to see the hardware inside. Loving the >9K reference. But what's the typeface on that site? Is it Roboto? It renders beautifully on my Chromebook Pixel, but looks horrible in Chrome on Windows 7.

Researchers Discover New Layer To Human Cornea
Apparently nobody saw this coming...
Yeah not proud of that one...=)
"A previously undetected layer in the cornea, the clear window at the front of the human eye, has been discovered by scientists at The University of Nottingham. This new layer, called the Dua’s Layer after Professor Harminder Dua who discovered it, could help surgeons to dramatically improve outcomes for patients undergoing corneal grafts and transplants..."
"“This is a major discovery that will mean that ophthalmology textbooks will literally need to be re-written. Having identified this new and distinct layer deep in the tissue of the cornea, we can now exploit its presence to make operations much safer and simpler for patients,” said Dua, Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences."

The 11th Doctor Plays The Cheshire Cat
In this delightfully styled illustration. Clearly Amy Pond is Alice and if there was ever an incarnation of the Doctor that suited the role of Cheshire Cat it's Matt Smith's.
Great work by James Hance and apparently you can buy a print if you like it.

Surgeons Implant First Bioengineered Blood Vessel
It may seem small but this could impact up to 400,000 people in the U.S. alone...
"Clinicians at Duke University Hospital are some of the first to implant a bioengineered blood vessel into a human patient. The vein was developed by Duke spinoff Humacyte."
"The surgery is part of a larger phase 1 clinical trial on 20 patients with end-stage renal disease that Duke researchers are spearheading. The vessels are being implanted into the arms of the subjects to help with performing hemodialysis, and the researchers will be closely following up to analyze the safety and durability of the new grafts."
