My coffee roasting adventures will never be the same!  =D
Thanks, +Tim Campbell! <3 <3 <3

This was the first time roasting with the new HotTop Roaster.
I ran it on "auto" just to get familiar with how it works.
I had read the entire manual to try to determine if/when I might need to tweak the roasting, mid-cycle.  First and second crack passed while I was watching the color of the beans and the next thing I knew they were being ejected at 428ºF before they were quite to the level of darkness that I wanted.

They were almost as dark as I wanted, but not quite.

I went back to re-read to see how to extend the roast, just a tad.
It turns out 428ºF is the safety cut-off temperature.  :-/

I learned that as first-crack started, I should have cut the heat by 50% to allow a more gradual temperature increase between first and second crack. That way, second crack could go off at a lower temperature and allow for the possibility of slightly darker beans with a little oil showing, and without exceeding 428ºF.  Who knew!!!  ;-)

Always learning.  =D
I'll do better the second time.  =D

Hi guys!

A friend and I are considering a startup to design and build a home roaster for today's market. Our intention would be to run the project through kicktarter and but right now we're genuinely interested in what people who roast want from a roaster. So, we're doing some market research to try and better understand this.

I was hoping to get some feedback from people here in the form of a questionnaire. I know it's a lot to ask but it's not a long one so if you have 5 minutes we'd really appreciate your opinions here:

Columbia Huila El Tempo de Palestina from Sweet Maria's. 150 g roasted in a 150 deg F preheated poppery unit 435 deg F was achieved.

The last two batches I have upped my beginning roast weight from 120 to 150 grams. So far it seems I am achieving a more uniform roast. This is the limit for the original West Bend Poppery. I had to stir this batch until first crack.

From the past ten batches I have lost nearly 15 % weight between green and roasted beans. Does anyone else track and compare green bean weight and finished roast weight? I do my best to avoid bean loss but I do lose a few here and there.

Infographic explaining key differences between fair trade and direct trade coffee!
#coffeelovers   #fairtradecoffee   #coffee   #infographic

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters released the first infographic explaining key differences between fair trade and direct trade coffee to help educate consumers, roasters and farmers about the differences and benefits of a direct trade model over the widely used fair trade practice.

Through the direct trade process, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is able to work directly with the farmers who grow coffee, and by removing the third party exporter. The direct trade model results in more money for the farmers, and better quality coffee for the consumers. This has helped Bird Rock Coffee Roasters receive recognition for their roasting and sourcing efforts, including the coveted “Roaster of the Year” award in 2012.

“Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has seen the benefits of direct trade coffee sourcing firsthand,” said Chuck Patton, owner of Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. “Helping individual farmers improve their sustainable farming practices wouldn’t be possible through the alternative, fair trade model, which doesn’t allow for individual transactions, and often results in lesser-quality coffee. While the direct trade model may not be the easiest way to source coffee, here at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, we believe it’s the most ethical.”

The infographic developed by Bird Rock Coffee Roasters aims to show the differences between direct and fair trade, and highlights the main points of differentiation, including money handling, percentages of income that the farmers receive and feedback from the roasters, all ultimately leading up to the quality of the coffee. Also, since the term “direct trade” is not officially defined by the coffee industry, this infographic is an attempt to define the term and how it applies to many of the coffees that Bird Rock Coffee Roasters secures.___Infographic explaining key differences between fair trade and direct trade coffee!

Remember to time your shots

If your #coffeeroasters are anything like ours, you already know they take pride in the meticulous way they prepare your coffee beans. Their intention is to provide your friends and customers a beverage they will enjoy, talk about, and come back for.  Professional roasters do not stop there, and will carry on to determine the best brewing time that will result in bringing out the flavorful aspects of your coffee blend.

If you do not time your #espresso shots, you may end up serving a bitter mouthful of something that people will not be able to negatively stop talking about or something so weak that many will wonder if that really was coffee. Soon your roaster will become indignant and your mother will curse the day you were born.

If you are adjusting your brewing times because your customers like the taste of your coffee better, always verify your equipment is operating efficiently and your grinding burrs are sharp. After you have confirmed that all is well, we encourage you to speak with your roaster about your customers feed back.

Your roaster will appreciate your partnership and may agree that your brewing time is appropriate or they may wish to explore the idea of changing your blend. Either way your customers and your mother will appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Coffee Plants Need TLC!
#coffeeplants   #coffeegrowing

.. at the coffee plantation .. it is amazing how the coffee plants become just right after the harvesting season .. you do not recognize them anymore (truly beaten up) .. thats why one needs to give them so much TLC .. and then aftr the harvesting season they have to endure some 3 months of dry season .. and to make it worse .. they flower during the dry season .. and now we are in a situation where the beans have started to ripening (premature ripening!!). but you see it more in areas where the plantations are poorly nutrioned .. (like in the plantation for sale I went to see ).. these days weather conditions are funny (they are all over the places) .. but a badly nutrioned plant really gets affected .. and to keep a plantation in optimum conditions .. well one really needs to reach ones pocket .. but it does pay off .. these plantations are so grateful.!! .. I love coffee and really love my coffee plantation .. it is my second child!! .. I am really getting top coffee quality out of it!!! .. so it does pay off!!!!___Coffee Plants Need TLC!

Behmor 1600 Plus Drum Rotation
With the new 1600 Plus control panel there's a two speed drum rotation toggle. How does drum rotation effect the roast and when should a particular speed be applied?

Stumbled upon a local #coffee roaster last week just a few minutes walk from work. Crema is looking quite nice. First pic is after a 26 sec extraction, second is with the crema settled.

Using a stock #Gaggia Baby Class except for the Rancilio steam wand.

Two kinds of drums have been prepared now.
I'll do my best in roast.
I am sorry for the insufficient video of explanation.
Camera tripod was obstructive.

Yeah, What Robert Said!!!  :)  I love this bean.  This was a light roasted Chiapas.  Chocolaty and smooth.  A very nice roast and a great tasting cup.

I think I have my new probes adjusted just right and am getting used to the temperature difference.  This was my first good roast after re configuring, so keep an eye out for more to come!
