Debi Davis3,645_The purpose of a case study is to explore and experiment on a focused area of interest in order to develop theories, gain insights, and formulate conclusions that can be useful in advancing a body of knowledge._ On November 8, 2014, the #EagleCO  Team* was formed for the purpose of learning *how to introduce local businesses in a single town to Google Plus through the familiar territory of Google Maps.*  That, at least was the starting point.  This team of Google professionals – that’s what we’ve come to call ourselves as a result of this experience – has documented what we did and what we learned. The case study was published on April 15, 2015. (see link below) @101696764219780312734, known for her ability to get to the heart of the matter, will moderate a candid conversation with members of the team in a discussion about how the case study was conceived, the challenges encountered, the processes tested, the discoveries made, and plans for applying all of this going forward. None of this could have been accomplished without the support and encouragement of our various Google Plus networks and relationships.  If you’re receiving an invitation to this event, it is because you have shown interest in this project at some point: you have viewed or commented on an episode of the #PYBShow  featuring the project, you have commented on or shared a G+ post about it, or you have followed the @116892521277251383087 page that was created for the project. We invite you to be part of this event by commenting, asking questions, or just cheering us on. *This is, above all else, a celebration* of a goal that has been achieved through collaboration and dedication that was all made possible by the fabulousness of Google Plus. (Yes, “fabulousness” is a real word!)  *Team members:@102000982871890720967 @106708791607347215739 @115217137999606626868 @114099764891795191083 @111074048130521266574 @117875987563872032638 @114288177005200377179 @115238438924596047165 @115711602904460768024 @107095918319983994988 @106377741775412763530 @103252396937594847933 @113042596998797418291 @109243977328310908212 @103558652341658229842  Case study: http://bit.ly/1EpaWN4Local Businesses on Google Maps - A Case Study2015-04-21 23:00:00144
Network Round Table: The Softer Side of Business768*Join us as we talk about Open-Mindedness on the Softer Side of Business HOA Season of #CoreValues    * *Open-Mindedness* Many of us think we are open minded. I am sure most of us could be more open to new ideas and ways of thinking. One of my (@104641199698156385999 ) favorite experiences had to do with this weeks guest @107022061436866576067. He had been spammed by someone new to Google+ and instead of just ignoring the situation he decided to take a few minutes to help this new Plusser learn what is expected here on #ThePlus . I have since seen Mark do this very thing and have learned from his example. This week as we explore the past present and future of Open-Mindedness we will be enlightened by one of the most peaceful men on the Plus. *Friday, March 20th 2015* *11:42 am MST* (1:42 pm EST, 12:42 pm CST, and 10:42 am PST) This Weeks Guests: This Week's #PlusOneSuperHero      @107022061436866576067  This Week's #PlusOneSideKick      @110619855408549015935  This Week's #CoHostOne  is      @101280116286631896187  This Week's #CoHostTwo  is      @104683923092143784953    Mobile Link: http://goo.gl/m2nUDG Watch on Google+: http://goo.gl/VwSZcZ Watch on YouTube: http://goo.gl/m2nUDG Learn More on http://.GPlus.Training's blog: http://goo.gl/aaNbYG Network Round Table is back for the Season of Values!   Core values are as vital as goals to our success. Yifat Cohen78,518*What if....* Google+ is not a social network at all - never intended to be a Facebook killer, nor a Twitter wanna-be and definitely not in a rush to keep up with everything else out there...? *What if....* Google+ is Google's way of analyzing our personal relationships across all their products (because relationships can't be faked) and use that knowledge to fuel services like Google Now, Nest, Home automation and Driveless cars...? *"So what the fuck is Google+ for anyway?"* @102034052532213921839 is an ex-Google employee who helped design the UX of Google+ before he left Google a year ago, and whose name came up again on the Plus stream when he shared his *Thoughts on Google+* asking [quote] "So what the fuck is Google+ for anyway?" and got the community talking. *SO LET'S -TALK- HANGOUT ABOUT IT.* Chris is very disappointed with Google+ because he expects better from Google. But maybe he's expecting the wrong things? @113117251731252114390 rebutted Chris' post and defended Google+ in a Google+ post that was shared 524 time and sparked conversations across the Plus (https://www.gplusgotogal.com/MikeElganRebuttal1)  Chris responded - https://www.gplusgotogal.com/ChrisMessinaRebutal And Mike claimed that Chris lost the argument because he didn't answer the main questions: "What site has 1) a better community; 2) better troll control; 3) better photo tools; 4) better integration with a leading wearables platform; 5) better conversations; 6) better monetization; 7) better search?" (https://www.gplusgotogal.com/MikeElganRebuttal2) Basically, comparing Google+ to Facebook again. (_sigh_) *IS CHRIS USING GOOGLE+ WRONG?* Chris, who was an integral part in the development of Google+ for 3.5 years was told by @107742059751171695340 that he was using Google+ wrong. He should have been talking and listening to Top Contributors (which Jaana is one) who have their ears to the ground: _"Which is the direction it's taking? That depends. Also on us, the users.  Google listens."_ (You should definitely read the comments on Jaana's post, where she and Chris get into an agreement - https://www.gplusgotogal.com/JaanaNyströmGooglePlus) *IS IT ABOUT THE SHARED INTEREST GRAPH?* Perhaps the best insight is that of @105103058358743760661 who read between Chris' lines and brought up the point of Big Data and information networks: [Google+] "should have been 1000% focused on helping people build a rich information network around the things we care most about - our interest graph - and then to use that interest graph to connect us with *new* people who share those interests with us - our "shared interest graph." And if it's about the interest graph, then who's better than @115620878851836664537 to remind us that that takes time: _ It requires building a bunch of things, integrating them and then waiting to see how people will use them and what the data will show you. This means that we have to wait to see some results (many of which will impact search) andGoogle Rebuttal - Chris Messina's Perspective.2014-12-11 19:00:00173

I get to share my experiences from my point of view so that those who it resonates with will hopefully share some of theirs. The multitude of uses for Google Plus are in large part what I find so fascinating and witnessing each persons creation, minute to minute is akin to seeing a micro-verse develop right before my eyes. I've had a successful blog, a blog-talk radio show, both very past tense...now, I simply enjoy the camaraderie and I get to promote people and businesses I believe in. @110619855408549015935  - I've lived in South Florida my whole life, and it would be hard for me to imagine living anywhere else. I was born to two wonderful parents who are still together after all these years and into a wonderful and supportive family that stuck together through all the trials we faced. I'm an absolute technology geek. If software runs on it, I want to know about it. I've had many passions in my life, and nearly all of them have involved technology and science, but art, philosophy, and even a mystical streak also help define me. I can also geek out on stuff like Doctor Who, Sleepy Hollow, and Homeland.Gender Roles cont. | The Diversity Zone2014-04-17 19:00:00110

Barry will be joining our regular #ISOOSIChat panelists including @113426828273677356184 @106515636986325493284 and @112430199625001815612. Barry has provided a very unique and valuable commentary on search engines and the search marketing industry for many years. Barry and the SER team report on the most interesting threads taking place at various popular Search Engine Marketing forums each day. Search Engine Roundtable not only reports on these topical issues, but also provides a synopsis that provides greater detail on these forum threads. One of SER's primary goals is provide a single source for the reader to visit to locate the most interesting threads covered at the SEM forums. Those in our audience that visit or contribute to forums know that sometimes things can get stated that are not based on facts. Sometimes these observations may lead to statements that sound like fact, but they are unfounded. We are after all talking about search engines here and considerations that are impacted by their algorithms - which unfortunately we in the SEM arena don't have access to :) Observations such as these can quickly turn from threads with some small incorrect assumptions into more widespread rumors and sometimes into larger myths that stick around for a longer period of time. Barry and his team do a great job of monitoring “hot topics” on the forums, presenting all sides of those important issues while contributing to the discussion with their own valued opinions. Bill Slawski, (Director of Search Marketing at Go Fish Digital) is well known for his vast knowledge of Google and other search engines and the patents that have been filed relating to their ranking algorithms. Although it is difficult to have certainty about the value and mix of individual search engine ranking signals, Bill has the notable ability to always bring always bring it back to facts…. referencing related patents, interviews or official statements on the subject. On this hangout we aim to separate fact from fiction. Rumors and myths versus papers and truths and all points between.Search Marketing Rumors, Myths and Truths2014-03-18 20:00:0061

Those 4 Girls1,005*Welcome to @101560483852587124925 weekly show!!* This week we are talking about *_Gender Roles - When Were They Defined  & How They Affect Today_* *When were gender roles defined?* *What was in place before gender roles were defined?* *Who defined them?* *How do gender roles affect us today in our current society?* *Meet Our Guests This Week!!!* @118298229252974224674  - My life, my experiences, and my education have two unique facets to them, and on this page, I hope to showcase how the two have blended to develop me into the person I am today. As a former active duty soldier now serving in the United States Army Reserves, I garner wisdom from both the Military training and from my civilian business adventures. As an Army Reservist Psychological Operations Specialist, I work to influence the behavior of enemy personnel and foreign audiences. In this line of work, we distribute targeted information or conduct specific activities with the purpose of changing emotions, ways of thinking, and ultimately behavior. We study target audiences. We work to understand cultures, symbols and practices. We then use what we learn from these studies to identify the most effective courses of action to change their behavior. As a graphic design artist, I find that these skills from Psychological Operations become invaluable in guiding every aspect of a successful design. The typography, imagery, placement, color and every other aspect of a print or web design can work together to influence the behavior of a potential or returning customer. Each aspect of a design can communicate alongside the actual message contained in the words. A design can convey emotions, nostalgia, patriotism, and much more to support or reinforce the message being delivered.  As an online marketer, these skills become equally valuable. In the modern landscape of social media, many lessons can be taken from Psychological Operations. By carefully crafting targeted messages and responses, you can subtly create and steer conversations and gain rapport with people around the world. This strategy of visual and social communication is one of my greatest passions. I can also geek out on stuff like Doctor Who, Sleepy Hollow, and Homeland.  The geekery runs deep within me, but so does the artist and the dreamer. I'm also an Elder Scrolls addict, 1/16th Ewok, half Vulcan, and three-quarters Irish potato stew. I love technology and how it chGender Roles - When Were They Defined & How They Affect Us Today2014-03-13 18:00:0090
Meloney Hall3,721Teacher Says, “ Okay, class --  you better take notes for this lesson.” Fifteen students take notes vigorously as they try to keep up with writing cursive on their lined notebook paper. Eight Students do not take any notes at all.  They might ask for someone’s notes later. One Student draws doodles as a form of note-taking.  She gets laughed at and told to “grow-up” and take notes the right way.  I’m kind of embarrassed I listened to those peers; I need to gain those skills again!  So much easier to retain the information when you can draw pictures with your written notes (printed, not cursive).  How about the Digital Way of taking notes today?  That’s what +113865527017476906160  will be showing us during the HOA broadcast with me.  I will be interviewing Sacha Chua on Wednesday, March 12th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT about how she uses SketchNotes for taking notes in a digital format.  Free-flow handwriting and techy all at the same time!  She’s a woman in science and technology, so she really loves gadgets!    She uses SketchNotes, and it’s really very fascinating!  Watching her do them LIVE is really the best!  I know Sacha as a fellow HelpOuts Provider, and I have seen her do this for many HOA’s.  This is why I wanted to interview her --  you’ll say WOW like I did when I first learned about her and what she does.    This is a link to give you the basic idea of what the system is and why it is so handy for students, business people, and anyone else who needs to retain information.  And if you’re into saving paper, then this is a true match for you!  I like to think of SketchNotes as a digital white board.  http://www.core77.com/blog/sketchnotes/sketchnotes_101_the_basics_of_visual_note-taking_19678.asp Select YES or MAYBE to get a reminder on your calendar.  It will also help mark the spot if you can’t watch live, but will want to watch the replay.  You’re in for a techy-treat!  Hope you’ll be watching! Visual Note-Taking with Sacha Chua2014-03-12 23:00:0034

Jess + Scott + You387People are bombarded with so many messages...which requires intentional planning to integrate a message across mediums, interact with customers in a way that brings them into the story, and know exactly what the result will be. *That’s the obvious truth of using storytelling in marketing.* *Source:* The company value proposition. (Who are you, what do you do, and why does it matter?) *Framework:* Stories position your product within the marketplace and are reinforced by every customer facing area of the business (and to ensure consistency...the buy in from employees, vendors, and collaborators must exist too). *Connection Point:* Stories show solutions to customer problems, give them opportunities to experience what they are told they will receive.  Here are some commonly held beliefs...that are actually myths: - Try to get customers to interact with the brand (but, do they really want to?). - Interaction builds relationship (but, do people want to have a relationship with a brand?). - Be everywhere all the time to reach customers (but, do customers want to hear from you all the time?) *Special Guest: Mike Allton* Combine all that with SEO and @107499215004519214139  is the one person we immediately thought of. Why? He comes from a website background, understands how the web can be our sales funnel and how our time and energy using social media (ohh… including automation) generates return. Come and lets dig into our understanding of *how we tell our story*, how it affects the actual experience when connecting to us, and how to create referral or recurring business by maintaining relationships.  Ohhh...Did we talk about “Differentiated Storytelling?”   And now, so can you. *YOU* (the *Y* in JSY) matter - come and explore this topic with @110746124112827812577 and @109237790792840071389. *Start the conversation now.* (We are a LATE show. Eli Fennell66,897*Mommy Blogging* Moms are some of the hardest working people in the world.  Working moms especially can teach you a lot about the tricky balance between home and hearth and struggling to pay for those things. Blogging is a powerful tool used by many moms to earn extra income from home, and as a means of connecting with the world beyond the home.  Mommy Bloggers can be some of the most creative bloggers and blog marketers out there. This week we're fortunate enough to have three great mom bloggers joining us on the show.  @116049412326685043114 is the Owner and Founder of @109443498013606253208, a company that broadcasts your conferences and meetings via social media.  She also runs the @104387705093966958943 blog along with @105157585341687205092.  @105461979270549477337, founder of the HinesSight Blog, Luxury Travel Editor for Skimbaco Lifestyle, and writer for Examiner.com, knows the best places to eat and stay in North Carolina.  As a mom to two young children, she knows the best in family travel, but as a parent in her mid-forties, she seeks out restaurants and hotels that adults can enjoy, too. @116648555722751383250 is Founder, Editor, & Writer of GoDanskerMom.com, and writes a guide for parents in the Triangle region (MominChapelHillNC.com).  Her work has appeared in several places including HerStories Project, ChapelBoro, Carolina Parent, Durham Macaroni Kid, Triangle Moms on Main, Vend Raleigh, and the Raleigh News & Observer‘s Triangle Mom2Mom.   I'll be interviewing them about Mommy Blogging, the skills, tools, and commitment necessary to be successful at it, and how their insights can help other Mom Bloggers and bloggers in general.  Join us this Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 8 PM ET!  We hope to see you there! #dmcshow   #digitalmediaconnections   #mommyblogger  Digital Media Connections #4 - Mommy Blogging2014-02-27 02:00:0016

Wednesday, February 28th 11:30am PST/12:30pm MST/1:30pm CST/2:30pm EST More about our guest @115620878851836664537 - we all know and love him for his business smarts and now we get to hear what makes him tick when we ask him.. What's Your Story? _Before I got here to Google Plus, I used to be a corporate rat who used to be a journalist, before I jumped ship into full-time writing and blogging._  _I travel a lot. Over the last three years I've spent time in thirteen countries and three continents making airports and hotel rooms more of a constant, for me, than home. The one stability in all this is Google+ where I can be found, time allowing, on most days._  _The conversation here is very real and the issues we talk about are engaging and I have met people on G+ who are simply superb to connect with. I post frequently on what grabs my attention. I share insights from my writing and research and I take part in many conversations where I feel I can deliver value.  Social media is changing everything. How we shape that change and what we do in the aftermath is down to us. _ This week's show is sponsored by: @108712904755834193601  A full service hotel, conveniently located in downtown Washington, DC The hotel is located within walking distance of the White House, DC Convention Center, and two separate Metro/subway stops. http://www.inndc.com Each week @117778937939543425499 & @101696764219780312734  spotlight guests who share their inspiring stories of ingenuity, tenacity and courage! Eli Fennell66,897*Building a Following* There are different ways to build a following, and different goals in terms of reach and scale.  The small business owner may dream of internet media stardom, but probably doesn't need it like the Big Brand, their goals may be more modest (reaching that small but critical fan base, for example).  Likewise, the Tech Blogger may never rival the audience of Britney Spears, but can build a respectable and valuable audience in their own ways. This Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 8 PM ET, we'll be discussing this issue with three guests who have approached it in very different ways and with different opportunities as well. @110677274294554982279 is a web guy, home brewer, and "glasshole" (Google Glass Explorer) from my home state of Florida.  His turn ons include long walks on the beach while playing Ingress, and his turn offs include poorly coded or incomplete websites and blogs. @102000982871890720967 is an Authority Marketer & Brand Strategist at @115000108263064481690, a graduate student at Kent State University, and also a Glass Explorer.  She is a bit of a health nut and the proud owner of three dogs. @114468593663912084118 is a social media "International Man of Mystery".  His Google+ profile tells you very little specific about him, yet he earned a spot on Google+'s coveted  Suggested User List and has gained hundreds of thousands of followers.  He's not afraid to call out anything that bothers him, and when he does, he usually goes viral. We'll be discussing the different ways to build a following depending on your goals and the opportunities that present themselves.  I'll be adding my own perspective as a Two Time Veteran of the Google+ Algorithmic Suggested User List. It should be a very insightful discussion with a great group of people, and there will almost certainly be random moments of humor and silliness.  We hope you'll join us! #digitalmediaconnections   #DMCshow   #throughglass  Digital Media Connections #3 - Building a Following2014-02-13 02:00:0034
ISOOSI Research Engine3,513@107022061436866576067 joins the ISOOSI chat today at 3pm EST and we're super excited to have him on the show.  Mark has been one of the people for me personally (and I know for many others too) that has really been instrumental in highlighting the benefits of Google+. But, not only the easy pickings that are clear to see. Mark evangelizes the use of Google+ as not only a business network but a social network. A social network that is on a different level to anything else we have on the interwebs. He'll be the first to say that it has given him opportunities that would never have existed before it. And I for one share that experience and couldn't agree more. All businesses can learn from this hangout... and we'll start really with the basics too. We know we have many small businesses that use ISOOSI and list their businesses in our search directory that currently have zero presence on Google+   So, some of what we talk about may be already known to those that are immersed in it on a daily basis.... but through this hangout we hope to join Mark in expressing our belief in the platform and communicate the benefits it can bring to you - from a personal AND business perspective. @112430199625001815612  President, ISOOSIGhost Town or Land of Opportunity - Google+2014-02-11 21:00:0094

Christine & Mia8,249Join +Christine & Mia and our January guest host +Craig Fifield to interview special guest +Eli Davidson this week. *Wednesday, January 15th* 11:30am PST/12:30pm MST/1:30pm CST/2:30pm EST More about our guest: +Eli Davidson is a nationally acclaimed female motivational keynote speaker, executive coach, award winning author, and corporate spokesperson. _If playing small is no longer an option this show is JUST for YOU. The worst day of my life sparked $100K DAYS and is helping kids in Africa. It’s still hard to talk about it. I fell in love- in love so bad that going to Costco was like going to Paris. You get the picture. I closed my business to move to Hawaii to get married. Baby, my abs looked really good. On a Wednesday morning my fiancé woke up and announced that he didn't know if he wanted to be in a relationship with anyone. And then asked me to get on a plane and go back to LA…..that day. So, in February 2011 I didn’t know how I would be able to pay my rent. I was a mess to put it mildly. That diamond I had given back was a symbol. A diamond is the most condensed form of wealth on the planet. I had to find the diamond inside myself. What was my value and contribution and how could I help others?_ _I am an entrepreneur so this took me on a journey of discovering the “diamond in my business “. By uncovering that value (and I will continue to be a student of this for the rest of my life) and creating those diamond systems I took my business from $4k a month to $100,000 days of sales and over $1million in sales in 2 years. Then I got to mentor other business owners to use those same systems. I guess it sounds self-serving, but that is not the intention. Women in particular have told me this story gives them the courage to stop playing small and go for it themselves. I am so excited to be on the show so I can give some tangible tools to help people now._ _I believe that small business can and must be a genuine engine of good works. What if every entrepreneur gave back to the planet? Now, helping business owners is a way to help make our world a better place. My life is pretty unrecognizable from a few years ago. I am still in awe. In my last event we just raised $25,000 to adopt a village and teach entrepreneurship in Africa. That is the point of all this. There is just so much good we can do together!_  *This week's show is sponsored by:* +CT Social  CT Social, LLC is an interactive digital agency based in Central Florida. Yifat Cohen78,518METal is an exclusive gathering of and for dynamic entrepreneurs and change-makers in the media, entertainment and technology space. Their events range from talks with high-profile thinkers to connecting ideas and collaboration in our community. *One time sneak-view into METal's private meetings* This week, Tim Sanders, a New York Times bestselling author, public speaker, and former Yahoo! executive will be speaking about *Creating the Sale* The soul of this belief, comes from that creatives of all types have a passion for what they are doing because they are chasing the truth and doing “what’s right” with their lives. This is the fuel for their inventive thinking. They don’t deduce their way to the close, they create new worlds that bring everyone together. Much like a marketing executive or a software engineer, they bring their creativity to work everyday and find new joy in selling. *Many of us have one thing in common:* We are creative types trapped inside a body that is focused on a professional career, at this week’s COED METal, Featured speaker Tim Sanders will show us how to *become a creative sales genius.* Tim will show how the “funnel system” of sales is outdated, primal at this point in it’s assumptions. Each time we look at sales as a numbers game, we reduce people to statistics. That’s bad for our brand, future relationships and our sales-karma. This talk is perfect for any professional who faces a complicated sales process or an entrepreneur who is up against a high wall of resistance in selling his or her idea This week’s featured speaker is Best Selling Author Tim Sanders. Tim’s business expertise and deep research capabilities make him indispensable to some of the biggest brands in the world. He speaks for strong business relationships, both internal and external. *“Get them right,” he says, “and you’ll grow your business during good and bad times alike.”* Tim’s relevant point of view and reputation as a people expert makes him one of the most in demand keynote speakers on the conference and convention circuit. *ENTERTAINMENT* Enjoy the music of Freddie Ravel and Jhameel during this event. *Freddie Ravel* has two infectious passions: creating purpose-driven music and applying its proven effectiveness in helping entrepreneurs, businesses and corporations thrive. Jesse Wojdylo838,778Over the last few months I have noticed many people using Twitter to supplement Google+ or the other way around. I think there are some very effective strategies that can be used. This week we will get some of those strategies out on the table. All the information you need on Google Plus Chat is available here: http://wojdylosocialmedia.com/google-plus-chat-twitter-chat/ In December of last year I really jumped on Twitter in a big way as I love the real time updates and the sports engagement. This has yet to come to Google+ so I spend my weekends chatting it up with college football and college basketball folks. While doing that I notice plenty of other awesome social media users that know and love the Google+ platform. This led me to these discussion questions: 1. How long have you been active on Twitter? 2. Do you use Twitter for pleasure or business? Or pain? 3. Do you auto post to Twitter? Do you post Google+ Posts? 4. Google+ is Google No More

When Google+ launched over 4-years ago, the idea was to both promote a new social network, and create a unified account system and social spine for all things Google.

As this latest blog post from +Bradley Horowitz admits, they didn't get it all right.  Google+ the identity layer was forced on people who had no desire to use the network; integrations with the network became nearly ubiquitous across properties; the 'social spine' became a privacy nightmare for some people; and the effort became at times so obnoxiously in-your-face it soured people on both the social network and the larger ecosystem.

In short, Google+ was the branding equivalent of New Coke.  Much like the Coca Cola Corporation, Google is recognizing this, as recent deintegrations (removals of Google+ features from other Google properties) have shown.

Drive-By Engagement is No Engagement At All

In my previous posts on this topic, I've discussed the rug-yanking tactics some social media personalities employ when they get a taste of fame and turn hard-sell on you (https://plus.google.com/u/0/+EliFennell/posts/2zEAnT9EDWz), and the importance of the social 'contract' (https://plus.google.com/u/0/+EliFennell/posts/g9Vdhn3uGo6).

Quick Recap: If you followed me for my geeky posts on Doctor Who and I'm suddenly posting nothing but my paid services as a marketer or my latest book, I broke the contract and owed you some insight into how my thinking had changed.

Now I'd like to vent, if I may, about the most misused term in the social media marketing field: engagement. I'm guilty of using the term as a shorthand, a way people in the industry speak, and I haven't always been clear what I meant by... more »

I'm guilty of using the term as a shorthand, a way people in the industry speak, and I haven't always been clear what I meant by it.

It really is simple.  Engagement means a more-than-one-way exchange, an interaction involving two real parties.  We'll throw bot accounts out of the equation; they can be as realistic as they like but they aren't people.

I appreciate a Like, Favorite, +1, Share, Retweet, or Subscription/Follow/Friend as much as the next person.  It is like smiling at me as you walk by, it makes me feel good.  It does not, however, win my trust by itself.

I'm sure there are too many hoaxy 'Social Media Strategy' courses out there for me to blame them all for the behaviors I see in some professional circles who believe they 'must social media' on any one or handful of sources.  Maybe you took one of these, yourself.

What they didn't tell you was this: anyone who's been around the social media block a few times sees through it.  Serially Liking our content, sharing our stuff without a thought of your own, dropping us in Shared Circles or Twitter Lists, it doesn't make us want to throw traffic or followers your way by itself.

In fact, any time our networks show us this kind of mindless robo engagement, their algorithms have failed us.  I don't care if you have 10 or 100 or 100K followers, one spammy moment of armchair interaction that we are bothered by being shown is a failure.

There is on social media, as in life, a spectrum of ways to interact, and I don't pick my friends by who favorites or pokes me the most.  I also don't go by who absolutely agrees with me the most, because if me and thee agree on all things, only one of us is necessary.  Don't be a troll, but bring your best to the table from time to time.  I don't always expect or always give profound thoughts or deep interactions, but don't try to slide-by on only the shallowest levels.

And if you think my numbers, my views or followers or reach, make me some remote figure you can't possibly speak to, let me reassure you: I do everything I do the same way you do, one step at a time.  I have no Harry Potter Wand to make my life any easier than yours, or to allow me to fly above the rest of you.  We may not get along if you do reach out to me, but you won't have lost anything trying.___

Nepalese Boy Becomes Human Sacrifice Victim

In a story that sounds like an occult thriller fiction to Western audiences, but is tragically common enough still in some places, a young Nepalese boy has become the victim of a vicious human sacrifice.

Worse than that, perhaps, is that he was killed by a father who believed doing this would help his own sick child survive.  A life for a life would be bad enough, but this is a life for a phony promise of life, suggested by a so-called 'Holy Man'.

Sadly, this is a tale told too often in this region by the very group at the center of the story: Hinduism's 'Untouchables'.  The lowest caste in society, they earn their name by a traditional belief that for higher caste members even to touch them is to be contaminated by their spiritual impurity.  (Gandhi was noted, in part, for his willingness to touchth... more »

Sadly, this is a tale told too often in this region by the very group at the center of the story: Hinduism's 'Untouchables'.  The lowest caste in society, they earn their name by a traditional belief that for higher caste members even to touch them is to be contaminated by their spiritual impurity.  (Gandhi was noted, in part, for his willingness to touch these people, even their sick and dying, and to welcome them into his cause against England.)

Surely it is impossible that such prejudice manifests only in the form of an OCD about spiritual germs.  The Untouchables see the perceived 'sins' (not being rich, being too dark skinned, etc...) of their fathers visited upon them yea well beyond the 7th generation.

They are a group cursed by their very names, condemned to poverty, poor education, lousy employment, and the intimately linked structures of social discrimination and systemic oppression.

That said, and while I cannot endorse human sacrifice, if one absolutely must do so, then it let be in the name of Our Dread Dark Lord Cthulhu.  May His reign overtake the Earth in a glorious era of madness and bloodshed.

Ia Cthulhu!  Ia Dagon!

Google to France: It's Your Right To Be Forgotten, Not Everyone Else's

France's data protection regulator wants Google to honor European Right To Be Forgotten requests across all versions of their Search Engine globally.  Google is refusing, and I will support them all the way to withdrawing their business interests in France if that is what must be done.  Let France enjoy their censored Intranet while everyone else enjoys free, if not entirely unencumbered, access.

These words, to me, are the key to the whole battle, which in this case goes well beyond any business interests:

"While the right to be forgotten may now be the law in Europe, it is not the law globally. Moreover, there are innumerable examples around the world where content that is declared illegal under the laws of one country, would be deemed legal in others: Thailand criminalizess... more »

"While the right to be forgotten may now be the law in Europe, it is not the law globally. Moreover, there are innumerable examples around the world where content that is declared illegal under the laws of one country, would be deemed legal in others: Thailand criminalizes some speech that is critical of its King, Turkey criminalizes some speech that is critical of Ataturk, and Russia outlaws some speech that is deemed to be “gay propaganda."

"If the CNIL’s proposed approach were to be embraced as the standard for Internet regulation, we would find ourselves in a race to the bottom. In the end, the Internet would only be as free as the world’s least free place."

Globalization should never mean "Lowest Common Denominator".___

What Watermelons Used to Look Like

You've probably seen a watermelon and think you know what they look like, and you'd be partly right.  Modern watermelons look like the image on the right below.

But do you see that image on the left?  That's a watermelon as depicted by a Renaissance artist.

As you can see, selective breeding has had quite an effect on it.  In truth, many of the fruits and vegetables we eat today are quite different from their counterparts of previous centuries.

Bad Science: Yet Another 'Cell Phone Cancer' Scare

A new study is claiming that cellphone radiation can, in fact, cause cancer. While many people are rushing to embrace this resurrected fear, this part of it is worth keeping in mind:

Skeptics emphasized that the new study is a "meta-study," or one that is a compilation of many other reviews. The larger study, in turn, inherits any and all inadequacies of those evaluations, including possible inaccuracies in study-participant reporting, recall bias, and changes in technology.

Bad Science: Yet Another 'Cell Phone Cancer' Scare

A new study is claiming that cellphone radiation can, in fact, cause cancer. While many people are rushing to embrace this resurrected fear, this part of it is worth keeping in mind:

A Meta Analysis or Meta Study is an effective tool in some cases for isolating a weak and inconsistent effect, such as the link between daily low dose aspirin and heart attacks, and is most easily accepted when the studies it analyzes aren't especially controversial methodologically, i.e. the underlying experiments are not widely believed to have been flawed.

In this case, the underlying flaws in the studies analyzed were never reconciled, and despite fancy postulating about metabolic imbalances, the fact remains that years of laboratory tests exposing cells and lab animals to cellphone radiation have never observed them growing tumors or suffering other ill effects even at levels and durations of exposure no normal human would be subjected to.

Cellphone radiation is electromagnetic radiation, and at sufficient power can cause thermal damage (hence microwave ovens), but is not an ionizing form of radiation like gamma rays which cause cellular mutations and, yes, cancers. Your mother might not have known this when she warned you not to stand in front of the microwave, but remember, she was also taught ducking under her desk would save her from atomic warfare.

So keep calm and keep embracing your smartphone addictions, folks. It is probably one of the safest vices out there.___

The Tight Rope of Money on Social Media

Following up on my previous post, about social media 'gurus' and their sometimes very sudden and complete shift from people to salesmen (https://plus.google.com/+EliFennell/posts/2zEAnT9EDWz), I have a few additional thoughts about making money and social media.

Authenticity. It's a word 'Social Media Gurus' like to throw around, while rarely answering the question: what is authenticity?

+David Kutcher of +Confluent Forms LLC in a post titled "You can't fake authentic, nor do you need to work at it" (https://plus.google.com/+DavidKutcher/posts/CEvG5AmTyCv) put it brilliantly:

"What is an authentic interaction? An interaction based on knowing the other person's goals in doing/saying what they're doing/saying, and accepting them at face value."

Accepting them is the part of the social transaction that requires you to trust them, and this is where it gets tricky. Because once you've signed that trust contract, they can potentially use it against you.

I have followed a number of people, some of whom I nonetheless respect overall, but who preached a gospel they did not follow. They spoke of authenticity, and yet the reasons I once followed them are so far gone I can't remember why I still am (and sometimes no longer am), and with no evolutionary process to understand it.

They seemed to experience a rapid evolution in response to the smell of dollars and change, and the possibility of making more.

I've no problem with the money itself, or even the use of a social media profile to make it. Social Media has been professionally useful for me, to be sure. It is the breaking of the contract: what was a person became a business, as if through a hostile takeover. Great Posts and shares became replaced by endless litanies of hard selling, punctuated by the laughable pretense that engagement still mattered in their plan.

They pulled a bait-and-switch, to put it bluntly.

So lest I be misunderstood, here is my authentic truth: this account, the one I am posting this to (and any I cross-post this to) are PERSONAL accounts. I will share to them what I wish. I will never hard sell you, but money is part of my life like everyone else's. I will never say something because I think it will get more clicks (click-baiting). I won't promise to engage with everyone, since people do not scale that way, but I will promise that on my personal accounts you will never deal with a manager.

And if there is any way to do it, I will prefer rather than to ask you for money to give away what I can for free (or ad supported) to my followers and friends, because if I have gone farther in the Internet Marketing Industry than some it is because I followed a basic rule: don't pretend to be social if you're just out to sell people stuff. It may be impossible to quantify the ROI of followers who never pay you any money, but not the cost of driving away your most loyal supporters.___

GoPro Goes Spherical

Proving that it's still possible to innovate in the dedicated camera market, GoPro has introduced yet another multi-camera rig in partnership with Kolor: GoPro Spherical.

Growth potential has been a concern in some circles for the GoPro brand, but creating a compelling reason to buy multiple GoPro's is definitely one solution to the problem in theory.

Disclaimer: I own shares of GoPro, but my opinion of the brand is uninfluenced by this.  After all, who would own stock in a brand they don't believe in?

First Two Female Rangers to Train in Florida

Two female West Point Academy graduates are 17-days from becoming the first women to earn U.S. Army Ranger tabs.

The next stop in their amazing G.I. Jane-like adventures bring them here to the Sunshine State to Eglin Air Force Base, the largest military base in the free world, where they will train in our unique swampy conditions.

If they survive the skeeters, gators, and drill instructors, they will have completed their historic journey.

Good luck ladies, and good hunting.

Wherein I ruminate on the virtues of failure for business...

Fail Fast and Fail Often

Is your business 'playing it safe'?  If so, you could be leaving a lot of money and opportunity on the table.  You've been leaving out one of the ingredients to business success: failure.

I know, it's an ugly word to most business-minded people. It means lost money and wasted time and talent.  Who wants to fail in business, right?

Not so fast...

Did you know that many of the most valuable companies in the world fail more often than they succeed?  Five names from the technology world, where stock prices are hottest and valuations highest, spring to mind:

Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon

Apple's history of failures was lampooned long before I came along.  For every Mac or iPhone, the company has churned out a myriad of flops like the Newton and the Mighty Mouse (if you've never heard of either, you didn't miss anything important).  They've also had their share of duds, which sometimes they powered through to success, like their early experiment in dark art landscaping known as Apple Maps before they improved it.

Google has a similar graveyard of failures.  Buzz, Wave, Jaiku, Schemer, and Orkut all spring readily to mind.  They also once killed a product which was arguably a success: Google Reader.  And even when they do succeed, such as with Chrome or Android, it often isn't without its stumbles.

Microsoft seems to follow an "Every-Other-Fail" model for their operating systems, where each positive release follows on a flop, e.g. XP for ME, 7 for Vista, 10 for 8.  They've failed too many times to count in phones, tablets, music players, and other areas.

Facebook: Facebook Phone.  Need I say more?

Amazon: Fire Phone.  Enough said.

Yet these are among the most valuable companies on Earth.  Some are valued in the billions even when they lose money in a given fiscal quarter.

Why?  iPhone & iTunes.  Gmail and YouTube.  Windows and Office.  Facebook and Messenger.  Amazon (Enough Said).

What they share in common, at most times, is a fast-fail approach.  We never hear about their failures most of the time, because they bury them faster than they birthed them.  The ones where they kept pushing it are the ones we remember, the rest are quickly forgotten, and the myth of the 'unstoppable' (insert company name) resumes.

Don't be afraid to fail.  Be afraid of not heeding its lessons soon enough.  An innovative business can fail seven times before breakfast and be stronger for doing so.

Terminal Lucidity and the Evolving Science of Death

Some patients with extreme conditions of the brain and mind regain remarkable, even perfect (if brief) lucidity on their deathbeds.  For centuries this has been a well-described anecdotal phenomenon, but modern medical sciences have gone beyond the anecdotes to study the phenomenon in as controlled a fashion as possible.

What they've found only deepens the mystery.  For example, in many cases a patient's brain has been so thoroughly shrunken, destroyed, or replaced by malignant tissues it is inconceivable by our current standards that there is any ordinary medical explanation for their sudden recovery.

(Though it's worth noting, there is a small category of cases of people with bizarrely undersized brains somehow living cognitively normal lives: https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn12301-man-with-tiny-brain-shocks-doctors/ ; while this doesn't explain anything, it does call much of our nueroscience into question.)

Proof of 'Survival' beyond death, or just proof the brain is still a greater mystery than we can yet fully explain?  This remains a subjective choice until much more data is gathered and many more hypotheses tested.

What does seem clear, however, is that death and dying are not the binary "On-Off" classifications modern scientists tend to use.  People have widely intuited this from observations of the dying over thousands of years.

The Tibetan Bardo Thodol, among its many topics, devoted much time to studying the pre-mortem to post-mortem transition process, in what many regard as an almost scientific empirical approach to  the matter.  That it was empirical, i.e. was not meant to prove a religious view, is confirmed by the fact that it generally rejected any Personal Postmortem Survival as an explanation... though it did not rule out postmortem "non-physical" experiences entirely.

While the Scientific Community has understandably rebelled against the theistic interpretation of these matters, it now appears there may have been 'something to it' to after all... if only that the boundaries of life and death, sickness and health, and brain-consciousness are not so clear as we may have convinced ourselves.

I'm just going to leave this here...

I don't often share press articles about our products – they rarely seem to say much of use – but this was just such a good case of a journalist Getting It Right that I had to share. Google+ is very much alive, and our recent changes are focused on making it be the best product it can be for what it's best at: helping people meet people and have great conversations about things they're passionate about.

One particularly noteworthy thing in this article is its discussion of the "majority illusion:" people tend to assume that their friends are typical of the wider world, but almost by definition they aren't – for one thing, they all have one uncommon attribute in common, which is being your friend in the first place. And since people don't choose their friends randomly from the entire spectrum of humanity, one's friends are always a distorted sample.

So yes, we have here a tech press article which (correctly) uses an important result in cognitive psychology to explain why lots of tech press articles are nonsense.___I'm just going to leave this here...

Windows 10 is the Best Windows Update Cycle To-Date

This is exciting. Google is hitting back against the Facebooks of the world with app store search ads and blowout quarterly earnings; Microsoft is hitting back against the Googles and Apples by showing what an established install base still means.

If we've ever had a chance in the technology market to end the permanent duopoly status it is now. Everyone is doing well in their own ways. There is overlap but no one is 'killing' the core market of the other. Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Apple, and Amazon are the five horses (sorry Samsung; you're the one horse of hardware in some ways but you've got no growth markets beyond that). This is the time as a consumer to sit back, grab the popcorn, and watch it all unfold.

2) Those who face the temptation to become like this, and they remember why anyone cared what they said in the first place: because they weren't that type.

Everyone thinks they're better than that, of course.  THEIR program for success REALLY DOES WORK.  Their Infographics are so supremely high quality, +Matt Cutts would surely burst into flames before the ruling intelligences of the universe would let him penalize it.   Surely a young Bill Gates would have sold off all his early Microsoft investments to throw themselves behind him.

But we all know better.  Making money is fine and well, but we know who promised to be different, who promised their first concern was engagement and their first priority their followers; and it doesn't take long to recognize the ones who were blowing smoke from their every orifice.___

The problem with too many people in the tech media is they build a narrative that, regardless its inaccuracy, becomes Gospel, and Google is one of those companies that seems to get some of the harshest treatment: every Google thing ever has been 'dead'.  Just look back and you'll see it all the way to Google Search in the early days.

Even if somehow these people were right... Google did eventually 'Sunset' the Plus... it would not change the fact that there has been a vibrant community here since the start.  You couldn't fit us all in a stadium, even if we overspilled into the parking lot and surrounding neighborhood.  If every Google+ user in the world had a Hangout In Real Life, we would probably take over a major metropolis doing so.

If you have a nail, and I offer you a hammer, and you say, "No, I'm holding off, because the company that made the hammer might discontinue their hammer making business, and anyways maybe something better than a hammer will come along," you look foolish, not I.   As websites across the world wide web and apps across the app stores struggle to monetize, a vibrant and passionate community they've been ignoring, spamming, or trolling anytime they see the slightest possibly bad news, laughs at their pretenses.

The Key to Social Media is Being Social.  That goes for any network.  You can score it huge on anything from Snapchat, to Pinterest, to Instagram, to Tumblr, even Reddit... if you can learn the 'rules' of engagement on that platform.

The largest audience isn't always the best audience.  The easiest channel isn't always the natural one.  And if you live your life avoiding software that might go away some day, you should get it over with right now and go Amish.  You might still have to hire the English to do computers for you, but you won't have to worry about it yourself.___

How To Be a 'Supernatural' Brand

In surveying the internet marketing landscape, I feel I can hardly overstate the importance of a single demographic: teenagers.

As I wrote in "Take the Teen Smartphone Challenge for Your Business" (http://goo.gl/mW6mvm), "Teens drive consumer technology in the 21st Century." ... "These are your future, if not present, customers."

The last statement is a truism, of course: today's teens are tomorrow's adults, so obviously if teens are not already your customers, at least some will be as adults.

Teens have a less immediate impact on popular entertainment, depending on the type; their influence on music, for example, is greater than their influence on television or movies.

Their tastes, as we know, change quickly, especially as teens soon mature into adults and "put aside childish things".  Yet, for nearly a decade, one TV show has held the attention and enthusiasm of a largely teenage audience, even retaining many of them as fans as they grow to adulthood: Supernatural (http://goo.gl/wkFGrm)

First launched on the WB Network in 2005 (which merged into The CW Channel in 2006-2007), Supernatural follows the adventures of two brother 'hunters', Sam and Dean Winchester, who battle ghosts, demons, and other supernatural and mythical beings.

While the Dawson's Creeks, One Tree Hills, and Smallvilles of the same network have folded, Supernatural has continued to win the new teenage audience every time the old one grew up and moved on.  So how did they do it?

Putting it bluntly: repetition.  The entire show can be described as a repeating story arc with slight variations: at first some catalyzing event, usually a tragedy, reunites the estranged brothers, who set out for revenge and to help others along the way.  Sam faces a spiritual crisis of some sort, whereby he can go down a path leading to doom or damnation, or pull back.  Dean takes charge when he feels Sam has gone too far, and asserts his own impulsive judgment.  Sam goes too far, Dean pulls him back just barely in time (but always just a bit late), and one brother or the other dies, forcing the other to make a foolish self-sacrifice to bring the other back.  The brother who is brought back resents this, other things go wrong between them, and they split.

With slight variations, and only as a simplistic framework, this is the formula of the show.  And it works.   In addition, the arc opens to a new adversary each time: ghosts, demons, angels, werewolves and vampires, gods, etc...  The brothers remain the same, but the trappings of their adventures are given a fresh coat of paint.

What can your brand learn from this?  In the first place, that consistency works.  Absolute originality may be the obsession of the starving artist, but even the great artists always use a certain degree of formula.  For businesses, where you won't be judged in a softly lighted gallery over wine and gourmet cheeses by intellectuals, formula is indispensable.

Beyond that, while the formula remains the same, something has to change to keep people interested.  Even a huge brand like Coca Cola has reimagined and reinvented its branding too many times to count.  The cola may remain Classic, but nothing else is too sacred to at least explore other options and approaches.

Your target customers and clients are as fickle as teenagers when it comes to choosing you, and why shouldn't they be?  They owe you nothing unless you win their loyalty, over and over again.  Give them what they want, while keeping them delighted, and they'll help keep the demons of poverty from breaking the circle of your bottom line.

Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Diversify My Marketing Strategy

I had a bad feeling about the article linked to below before I even clicked it, but I hoped perhaps to find some kind of satire, a sarcastic statement on the culture of "Quick and Dirty SEO Tricks".

My desire for a chuckle was quickly to be killed.  The title of the article, as hyperbolic as it is on its face (is Super SEO 'Super' the way Superman is Super, or the way a Superconductor is Super?), pretty much tells the whole story... or so I wish it did.

No, in fact, not only is this article suggesting that Infographics are the ultimate key to an SEO strategy, it goes one further and suggests you devote the resources of entire teams to the designing of infographics, while both mentioning and dismissing warnings from Google's own spam team that infographics could lose their SEO juice or see it reduced at any time.  Nods to 'quality' seem entirely secondary afterthoughts to the main goal of link building.

Let me state outright, I view this advice as completely backwards.  When you find an SEO 'Trick', and you may find one (there are always plenty to be found), it should be treated as simply another tool in the toolkit, and an experimental one at that until it is clear whether the technique is approved of by the Search Engines. (Spoiler: If it really is a 'Trick', it won't be.)

Under no circumstances devote vast resources to the pursuit of a 'One Trick SEO' Strategy.  Instead, use your team and your resources to develop a broad and diversified strategy that builds loyal customers and clients that no algorithm changes can take away.

I am not saying don't use Infographics ever at all, but I am saying if anything looks too good to be true in the world of marketing (as anywhere else), it isn't.  Or, at least, it won't be for very long,  and then you'll have wasted all that effort when you could have built your marketing castle on the rock instead of the sand.

In an era where Automatic Infographic Makers are a thing, this strikes me as an incredibly suicidal approach.

In conclusion, in the words of Admiral Ackbar:

It's a trap!

Don't Forget to Define Your Business Culture

One of your most valuable business assets is also the most intangible: culture. Culture makes the difference between good companies and bad ones, and also good ones and great ones. The most successful companies are also those with the most identifiable business cultures, e.g. Apple, Google, Facebook.

In my latest post for +On Track Tips | Wiser Sites I explain why you need to define your culture for business success, instead of trusting everyone to 'just know' what you are.

Define Your Business Culture

You may be a business, but are you also a culture?  You should be.  Culture, in this case, means "the attitudes and behavior characteristic of a particular social group".

The social group in question?  You and everyone who works there, from the owners and executives down to the lowest level employees.  You are the embodiment of the corporate culture.

But what is your culture?  Does everyone know?  If I asked any random employee this question, would they all give similar answers, different answers, or blink and ask, "Our culture?  What do you mean?"  If it isn't the first, then your culture is at best fragmented, and at worst nearly invisible.

Why is defining the culture important?  For the same reason any culture functions best with a well-defined sense of community and purpose.  This can be observed in national cultures in the tensions inevitable when large immigrant groups arrive, with said tensions usually dying down as second or third generations acclimate and come to identify with their new culture.  In large businesses, a takeover, merger, or acquisition can also bring in new employees, sometimes with incompatible or undefined cultures of their own.

In the early days of a small business venture, there may be an intuitive sense of "What We're About", but without defining this, how can you scale it should the business grow or even just experience employee turnover?

Start by literally defining your culture, on paper.  This should ideally be done when the business is first forming.  Don't make it into a Bible: you might need to make changes or additions later.

Also resist the temptation to become some sickly sweet corporate 'family' culture of the type so hollow and insincere it has been lampooned, along with the unenthusiastic employee reaction to such sentimental impositions, in the fictional corporation Initech from the movie Office Space.

Three things I recommend be part of any Business Culture:

1) Fun - Unless your business is exceptionally somber, for example you run a Funeral Home, Fun should be something all of your employees and customers associate with you right away.  Don't fret, Fun doesn't mean unproductive.  Googlers have slides in their offices, yet it clearly doesn't stop Google from getting stuff done.  Fun means people enjoy working for you and buying from you.

2) Caring for Customers or Clients - This emphasizes the need to stay responsive to the needs of those who do business with you.  Nothing will undermine a business culture faster than people who pay you money feeling neglected, ignored, or actively mistreated.

3) Pride in Results - Your business and employees should take pride in delivering great products and/or services, and should only take pride when they deliver on that.

And remember, these can't just be words.  Anyone who is just repeating 'The Mantra' without embodying it may very well be dead weight and the weak link in your chain.

#MarketingTips   #BusinessTips  ___Don't Forget to Define Your Business Culture

One of your most valuable business assets is also the most intangible: culture. Culture makes the difference between good companies and bad ones, and also good ones and great ones. The most successful companies are also those with the most identifiable business cultures, e.g. Apple, Google, Facebook.

In my latest post for +On Track Tips | Wiser Sites I explain why you need to define your culture for business success, instead of trusting everyone to 'just know' what you are.

Seriously, Microsoft, you mean you guys were designing Windows 10 when these two things happened:

1) Someone said, "How do we display error messages?"  Someone else said, "How about a useless message on a blue background?  Our customers always seemed to like that."  And you all thought this was a fantastic idea.

2) You managed to find a way to make your already useless Blue Screen of Death error messages even more useless?  That deserves some sort of prize.

Is a Blue Screen of Death really a necessary design element?  I mean... I don't really see anyone else doing it.

New Facebook Marketing Strategy

I've been observing the dynamics of the Facebook News Feed since my return to that network (which I intend to stay on this time, unless and until I find the clause in their TOS which surrenders my soul; a professional marketer loses the right to be too choosy).

Facebook changes their algorithms a lot.  I mean A LOT.  One day they're pushing photos, the next videos, then suddenly they want to show you more stuff from your Friends (imagine that!).

This can be understandably confusing.  Luckily, I've observed one constant, and the right marketer can no doubt easily exploit it:

Change Your Profile Pic

Seriously... try it.  Change your Profile Pic, see what happens.  You'll get comments from folks you'd forgotten you Friended.

So... instead of Profile Pics and Cover Photos, just keep swapping out new ads into that space.

I almost want to pat myself on the back for being an evil genius... but I'm entirely too honest to use this technique.  I'd love to hear if someone actually tried this what results they would get.  The only problem I can see is users might actually catch on to what you're doing and some may resent it.  But if you're just trying to game the system anyways, who cares about that if it works, right?___

How a More Focused Google+ Could Succeed

Surprisingly... very surprisingly... the infamous +The Verge (known in some Android circles as the pejorative 'iVerge'), has probably written the single best, most balanced piece yet on why the narrative of a more focused Google+ isn't necessarily PR spin, but could very well be what it needs to become a 'Top of Mind' network.

Being honest, and speaking as one very fond of Google+, and while I don't deny this network enjoys considerable 'reach' (integration across Google tends to guarantee that, or did at least), it lacks one thing most popular social networks enjoy: being top-of-mind.

Google+ doesn't and never did have such a hook.  Forget being too much like Facebook: it wasn't enough of anything.  The Photos part was certainly vibrant, vibrant enough to be split off as its own app.  Hangouts is a great communication tool, and likewise great on its own.  So what is Google+?

Users like myself will tell you, it's the best place to follow great people for the great topics and content you love.  Unfortunately, it hasn't always been easy to explain to people how to find this.  Despite its obvious strengths, Google+ split the onboarding process between a futile attempt to get your friends and family joining up with you, and a supposedly interest-based following that really just lumped people known for some interests.  While the latter was an attempt of sorts, it suffers a basic problem: Chefs don't only post about Chef-ing.  Shared Circles could sometimes help people find  a good group to follow, but were more often used for spam.

While it is likely only a first step in the right direction, Google finally seems to be fully embracing its users love for what the platform is good at with Collections, interest-based collections of posts by users, which users can follow without following the person, or unfollow without unfollowing the person (so if I love your muscle car posts but hate your politics, I can follow the one but not the other... assuming you did them as Collections).

If Google+, over the next period, really focuses like a laser on its unique talents, they could very well find a niche which, while not likely to overthrow any other network, may be both sufficiently valuable in terms of data and perhaps even profitable for Google, which so far has struggled (in part due to the good reason of no advertising... whether that lasts or not) to monetize Google+.___

Germany to Facebook: Shove Your Real Name Policy!

Facebook's days of enforcing the Real Name Policy their network has become somewhat notorious for (even as other networks have dropped the requirement) may be numbered, as German privacy regulators in charge of policing Facebook have ordered them to cease their policy and cease unilaterally changing user names to match identification (which they can no longer request, either).

A post by +Yonatan Zunger (https://plus.google.com/+YonatanZunger/posts/WegYVNkZQqq) made good points, after Google+ ended their real name policy, about the myth of the value of 'Real Names', in terms of people behaving 'better' or 'more authentic'.

"In practice, the forced revelation of information makes individual privilege and power more important. When everyone has to play with their cards on the table, so to speak, then people who feel like they can be themselves without consequence do so freely -- these generally being people with support groups of like-minded people, and who are neither economically nor physically vulnerable. People who are more vulnerable to consequences use concealment as a method of protection: it makes it possible to speak freely about controversial subjects, or even about any subjects, without fear of harassment."

So, basically, the privileged act worse and the unprivileged run away or face the storm of negativity they will inevitably face.  Real Name Policies do not make users behave better, nor does anonymity make them behave worse.  The lack of face-to-face or even voice-to-voice interaction, combined with the ease of safely 'hurling stones' from behind a keyboard are sufficient cause unto themselves to explain the trolling problem on the web.

If Google knows this, and if most social networks don't even bother to try such a policy, we must ask: why is Facebook really doing it?  There seems only one answer: data.  Knowing you're who you say you are makes them more money from advertisers.  A sudden and total end to the policy might just cost them some ad revenue and hurt their stock valuation (optimistic as it already is).

I, myself, once bought the myth of the glorious "Real Name".   Yet I cannot justify, to myself, the costs even if the benefits were real, which by in large they are not.___

On the Origin of the Gremlins  (The 'Real' Ones)

Let me preface this by saying: my apologies if you get the theme song from the 1984 film Gremlins stuck in your head because of this post... or because I just planted that idea in your head.  Sorry.  It did that to me, too.

As the movie itself explains, however, the lore of Gremlins is quite real... in a manner of speaking.  During World War 2, as hard as this may be to imagine, a surprising number of air pilots reported being harassed and sabotaged by a tiny race of supernatural beings.

Nor was this simply a case of 'Urban Legend', with each pilot claiming to know someone it happened to.  More than one pilot actually reported such things.

What is to account for such legends, well into the 20th Century from a group of professionals traditionally held to the highest honesty, especially with the care and safety of their aircraft and in reporting truthfully the conditions and causes of aircraft crashes and issues?

A Sociologist would no doubt point out that this was still a transitional period, for much of the world, between an era when most people would live in rural places to today, when most people live in and around cities.  Rural people tend to be more superstitious and tell more supernatural legends (to pass the time) than urban people.  Some pilots also came from such places, sharing legends amongst their fellow officers and, perhaps honestly if mistakenly, blaming the same sorts of spirits they always blamed for mayhem.

These same men, one might observe, were under tremendous stress.  Often times they were overworked, flying long night runs and taking experimental military stimulant drugs.  Imagine how you might feel driving all night on a dark two-lane road through an empty desert... now remove the ground, the road, and any features of any kind and add the sound of propellers and engines.

Another point that might explain it would be the imperfect science of human flight at the time in regards to keeping human occupants alive.  Outside the hull of a high flying plane is an air so thin it won't sustain most people long, so atmospheric life support is priority #1.  Unfortunately, even today, pilots of some military aircraft have reported negative experiences associated with their air supplies, with the cause sometimes going undetected for years.  If any of this was happening, or pilots were suffering hypoxia, predisposition to hallucinations and negative reactions is to be expected.

Yet another factor is the illusion of control: this is hard enough to maintain on solid ground, and miles up, in the dark or maybe with antiaircraft fire lighting the sky around you, it is a Herculean Labor.  While the idea of a race of tiny beings harassing your plane can be scary, especially as air flight was so new it wasn't entirely laughable, it can also be empowering.  That which can be identified can be controlled, especially when it is a being.  One imagines a Cottage Industry of Charms, Prayers, and other 'wards' sprung up from this.

Of course, all of these factors are very rational and logical and almost certainly close to the actual explanation, but it overlooks the very real possibility... and I'm speaking now to anyone reading this in the air as we speak...

There's a Gremlin on the wing!  There's a Gremlin on the wing!

Partly inspired by a topic of much discussion on Google+ today, here is my thoughts about going 'all-in' on a social network.

Get Out of Going 'All-In'

Social networks change.  Sometimes, they even die and go away, or languish in some purgatory of perpetual non-growth.  As the reaction from users to nearly any change proves, people generally don't like this, at least not at first.  Businesses, especially, don't like it.

Life is change.  You will never find a social network that doesn't change, and if you do it won't last long.  Unfortunately, changes can bring real problems when you've got money riding on something: decreased reach can hide you from your fans, a deprecated feature can throw your strategy into shambles, and much more.

So what is the best solution?  Stop going all-in!  If you've built your strategy on selling "The Secrets of Twitter"; if your only social presence is a Facebook Page; if half your traffic is coming from Pinterest... you may be living on borrowed time.

"But all my customers use Facebook!"

Then use other networks to find customers who don't.

I just don't get Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr/Google+!

Hire someone who does.

However, not going all-in also means not going all-in on social media in general.  Balance your social media strategy with SEO, SEM, Blogging, selling through eBay, etc..., etc...  Social media isn't the only channel for businesses online, and often isn't the best.

"Maybe winning isn’t everything. One just needs to hedge the bet and minimize the risk. - Doug Cooper

In short, Google+ was the branding equivalent of New Coke.  Much like the Coca Cola Corporation, Google is recognizing this, as recent deintegrations (removals of Google+ features from other Google properties) have shown.

Now the final, major step will be made: instead of Google+ accounts, Google will now simply use Google accounts, which by themselves aren't tied into social anything, private and unsearchable.

So is Google+ dead?  No, fortunately not.  While the Google brand reverts to Google Classic, Google+ will finally receive the type of focus many of us suggested it always needed: no longer a would-be "Facebook killer", the network can now presumably focus on what its most passionate users agree it is good for: discovering great content and accounts to follow (i.e. Twitter without the obnoxious limitations and fewer bots).

Google+ (the social layer) is Dead.  Long live Google+ (the network)!___

His manner of death was very sudden, though if he was indeed a terminal cancer patient as he claimed that might not be so unusual.  His fiancée thought it was, though, and evidently left his body in the car thinking the mysterious agency he claimed to work for, and which she assumed had killed him (in part because he claimed they were watching him), would come get him.

Who was he, really?  How did he get so many guns and so much ammo so quickly?  Was he really a cancer patient, and was this the cause of his sudden death, or something else entirely?

Further investigation has revealed his identity, at least (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-family-id-s-dead-man-with-cache-of-1-200-guns-20150722-story.html), and the not-so-surprising fact he was a gun collector.  Yet why he dropped so mysteriously from society, and the question of what he intended for all those weapons and ammunition linger, possibly never to be explained.

One thing, however, is certain: the term Gun Nut will never be viewed the same by comparison.  Oh, you've got a small collection of guns in your back room?  That's nice.  His collection went to 11.___
