Competing Browsers and Search Engines Blocked From Cortana on Windows 10

Microsoft has blocked 3rd party browsers and Search providers from Cortana on Windows 10. Moving forward, only Bing Search and Microsoft's new Edge browser will work with the company's integrated Virtual Assistant, in the name of what Microsoft calls the, "Integrated Search Experience in Windows 10."

Personally, I don't object to this move in principle, as Cortana clearly needs access to an integrated browsing and Search experience as part of the Microsoft ecosystem in order to be optimally effective. As long as Windows 10 will allow 3rd party alternative Virtual Assistants from companies like Google, which can be similarly designed to work only with an integrated Search and browsing experience (i.e. Google Chrome and Google Search), there will be room for healthy competition.... more »

After years of open and covert accusations and complaints to regulators about alleged anticompetitive behavior, Scroogled campaigns, and heated Public Relations battles, Microsoft and Google have agreed to drop all hostilities against each other and compete with each other on merit.

It would have been difficult to imagine this development just a few years ago, and probably says a lot about the new leaders of the companies, Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, and their priorities and personal philosophies of leadership.

Of course, Microsoft seems to have no intention of foregoing their royalty demands from Android partners for their use of certain (allegedly) patented software, so it isn't all roses yet between the two companies.

This is probably also partly driven by the blowback their back-and-forth conflict produced,... more »

A new study of former winners of the TV show Biggest Loser has found that their rapid weight loss reduces their metabolism, and that it never recovers. This is part of why only a single contestant has managed to keep the weight off, and even he is struggling with an abnormally low metabolism.

It seems certain that these findings can generalize to other cases where people lose a lot of weight quickly through extremes of diet and exercise. The body is simply not meant to lose hundreds of pounds in a hurry, anymore than it is meant to gain hundreds of pounds in the same rapid timeframe.

While there can be no doubt that morbid obesity (as opposed to merely 'weighing too much' according to subjective standards) can have dangerous health consequences, the price to be paid in the pursuit of a thinness many people can never obtain (because their natural body types don't permit it) can be measured in damaged metabolism, 'yo-yo' weight loss and weight gain, and in extreme cases in potentially fatal eating disorders.

Perhaps saddest of all, it is unlikely these findings will lead to the end of the 'Fast Weight Loss' genre of television shows, even though it is arguably unethical to continue knowing what we know now. No one cares what happens after the cameras stop filming, unfortunately.

Google+'s new focus, ever since its recent 'Material Design Makeover', has been squarely on two areas of the network: Collections and Communities. It has now become far easier to connect with Followers along a particular topic or theme than to attract Followers to your Profile. (By all accounts, including +CircleCount's extensive data about Google+ users and trends, Profile and Page growth has virtually flattened as the emphasis has changed to Collections and Communities.)

The latest update for +Google Photos​ for Android removes the Material Design-inspired 'Floating Action Button' (FAB) for Searching photos with a dedicated Search bar at the top of the app.

This is a good move. Visually, it brings Android in line with the web version of Google Photos (which also sports a Search bar), and at the same time proves that Material Design is an ideal, not a pair of handcuffs.

The 'pre-filled Searches' previously available by tapping the FAB (and before Searching for anything) are now available under 'People', 'Places', and 'Things' in a ribbon at the top of the Albums screen.

Chrome Tops Internet Explorer While Edge Is MIA

Google Chrome has overtaken Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the dominant web browser for PC users. According to some statistics, this actually happened years ago, but other stats have shown IE ahead before now. Even those statistics now show Chrome on top, while Microsoft's new Edge browser doesn't even show on their radar.

This may help explain why Microsoft has now hardwired Cortana in Windows 10 to work exclusively with the Edge browser and Bing.

Google is testing a new Search feature allowing select Verified Users (presently limited to some Presidential candidates, businesses, athletes, and other public figures and organizations but expected to roll out more widely) to 'Post' directly and instantly to Google Search Results.

These 'Google Posts' (or 'Posts with Google', if the URL for the program is to be taken as its name) are similar in style to embedded Tweets in Search Results, and sometimes drive those same Tweets down in the SERP's.

As this has been one of the major benefits of the renewed Twitter-Google Search deal, this may be very bad for the long-suffering 'Little Blue Bird' social network, as I also argued in 'How Google Posts Could Hobble Twitter' (http://goo.gl/edYjEc).

The single-celled slime mold is more impressive than its disgusting name would suggest. It can solve mazes (by means of chemical markers), display basic altruism, and it even exhibits an intuitive knack for efficiency.

And, as it turns out, they're also capable of a form of learning previously believed to require sophisticated neurological structures (i.e. a brain). In a recent experiment, slime molds were found to habituate over time to a bitter but nontoxic substance in order to reach a food supply, crossing a 'bitter bridge' slowly at first, but then more quickly upon discovering its harmlessness.

Hillary Clinton isn't highest in anything, but does well on Loves and Love-Anger ratio and lowest on Wows, as one might expect from the way her campaign frames her and her supporters view her as a 'Mature, Qualified, and Steady Hand' with 'Realistic Policy Proposals' who can 'Build On The Gains of Obama'.

One can also see in these results the 'double-edged sword' (https://goo.gl/pzAOOn) of particular Reactions. Trump probably gets Anger Reactions from both supporters (the 'anger' of his base voters is famous) and opponents (who are angry at him, not with him). He also gets the most Wows, and this is probably a mixed bag as well, with both supporters and opponents contributing.

Microsoft has blocked 3rd party browsers and Search providers from Cortana on Windows 10. Moving forward, only Bing Search and Microsoft's new Edge browser will work with the company's integrated Virtual Assistant, in the name of what Microsoft calls the, "Integrated Search Experience in Windows 10."

Personally, I don't object to this move in principle, as Cortana clearly needs access to an integrated browsing and Search experience as part of the Microsoft ecosystem in order to be optimally effective. As long as Windows 10 will allow 3rd party alternative Virtual Assistants from companies like Google, which can be similarly designed to work only with an integrated Search and browsing experience (i.e. Google Chrome and Google Search), there will be room for healthy competition.... more »

A man in a furry suit, sunglasses, and a surgical mask was shot by police outside a Baltimore Fox TV Station (WBFF Fox 45), after setting his vehicle on fire and making bomb threats. The man claimed to have a bomb vest, a USB containing some type of information about astronomy and the government, and a message that needed to be heard.

It isn't clear if the mysterious man has survived the shooting or if he perished, but staff at the TV station were, luckily, unharmed.

Comcast Raising Data Caps To 1 Terabyte

As many Comcast users are aware, the company has been introducing data caps for their internet users in a number of test markets. This cap has, until now, been a mere 300gb unless you pay $50 extra per month for an unlimited plan.

For certain types of users, 'cord cutters' who view all TV and movies on Streaming services for example, this has just been completely insufficient. Netflix even re-encoded their entire library with a new compression format to help keep their users below these caps.

As a Comcast internet customer and cord cutter, I can tell you that even after turning down the resolution of all the Streaming services I use to their lowest levels, it has still been difficult to keep below this cap.

Therefore it is good news that the company now plans to boost that cap to 1 Terabyte in all the test... more »

The German city of Augsburg wants to stop pedestrians from walking in front of their trams and getting squished just because they were too busy paying attention to their phones to pay attention to the world around them.

To this end, they've installed LED 'Traffic Lights' in edge of the pavement, so that these poor Phone Zombies can possibly receive one final warning of disaster, a warning which they don't even have to look up to see.

Unfortunately, this is sure to keep some Darwin Awards contenders from making the list, and will make it more difficult to breed the Stupid Gene carried by such individuals out of our species. I.O.W., it will probably save a few lives.

The 'Search' For Authority: Google Posts, Google Authorship, and the Semantic Web
 
Google Posts (a.k.a. 'Posts with Google') is a new way for authoritative Verified Google users to Post content directly and instantly to Google Search Results.  Currently being tested with candidates for the U.S. Presidential Election and some public and organizations, it functions similarly to a 'Social Search' feature (not unlike, in fact, their Search deal with Twitter), but with only the Posts themselves and no real social network attached to them (though they can be shared to social networks and as a link).

The 'Search' For Authority: Google Posts, Google Authorship, and the Semantic Web
 
Google Posts (a.k.a. 'Posts with Google') is a new way for authoritative Verified Google users to Post content directly and instantly to Google Search Results.  Currently being tested with candidates for the U.S. Presidential Election and some public and organizations, it functions similarly to a 'Social Search' feature (not unlike, in fact, their Search deal with Twitter), but with only the Posts themselves and no real social network attached to them (though they can be shared to social networks and as a link).
 
It also has something very fundamental in common with the now defunct Google Authorship program: a way of connecting web content (in this case a very specific type of web content, i.e. the Posts themselves) with the Identity with its Author.  This is critical to the evolution of Semantic Search, Google's quest to understand the Objects and Entities being Searched for and their associated facts and data (i.e. knowing that someone Searching for news about the death of Prince actually wants to know about the musical talent known as Prince and not just any random dead Prince, and at the same time knowing that Prince was a person with a particular gender, age, height, hometown, birthplace, etc...).
 
While Google knows a great deal about Entities, especially the authoritative Entities we call Politicians, Movie and TV Stars, Professional Athletes, etc...  where they've lagged has been in their ability to connect these Semantic Entities with their Online and Offline Identities, an area where they've been slow to answer effectively to the challenge of social media (where Facebook is behind Google in its knowledge of Semantic Entities, it easily laps them as a platform for following the Online Identities of these individuals, and of verifying that their Online Identity is connected with their Offline Identity as well, i.e. 'Verifying' these authoritative user accounts so other users of the network know that they're legit).
 
In the following article, I explain what Google Posts share in common with Google Authorship (and where they vary), and how they fit (or may fit in the future) into their goal of bringing Identity into their corner of the Semantic Web alongside the associated Entities and data in their Semantic Knowledge Base.

I believe this is a mistaken perspective, however, as I explain in the following article, that these new standards need to be understood contextually, as both 'signals' to service providers that a given piece of content will be very fast-loading, and as a means of segmenting audiences viewing the selfsame web content from within different browsing contexts, between those who need and would benefit from the full and dynamic website experience and those who just want to quickly consume a piece of web content and then return quickly and smoothly to their Stream, News Feed, Search Results, etc..., and without surpassing their data caps in the process.
 
The needs and expectations of Mobile users and PC users, and even Mobile users in different contexts, can vary significantly, and it is ultimately good for everyone, site users, owners, and developers alike, if these differences are recognized and adjustments made for the different types of users and contexts. These new fast-loading Mobile web standards are one way to begin to solve and address these issues.

Google Play Store: Coming Soon To A Chromebook Near You?

Some Chrome OS users are starting to see an option in their Settings to enable support for the Google Play Store, and the whole million+ app enchilada that comes along with that.

If it wasn't obvious by now, Chrome OS may continue to coexist with Android for a long time, or they could merge into a third OS before too long, but either way, Android won the war already. They may be proud of both of their children, but the little green robot is the favorite child, not the fancied-up browser.

So, if you're a Chrome user (like myself) and you've ever found yourself looking at Chrome and looking at Android and wishing you could get one or more apps for Chrome that you can get on your phone or tablet, your dark days are nearly over, and the good times will soon commence.

That may be about to change.

And of course, if users can accept Android apps on a Chrome PC, then why not simply make Android PC's? It seems the next logical step.

On the contrary, instant Mobile web standards aren't and probably never will be replacements for the traditional website. Rather, they function as both a 'signal' of fast-loading web content for 'On The Go' mobile users, as well as a means of segmenting your web audience between those who need all the dynamic bills and whistles of your website, and those who just want to consume static web content within Mobile apps as quickly and efficiently as possible.

While web developers (and their clients) are gun shy about giving up any of their bells and whistles for the sake of improving the Mobile web experience for all users, I believe that by understanding the real purpose and context of these new standards it becomes clear that everyone benefits from it, especially the web users themselves.

On this day in 1985, the Coca Cola Corporation embarked on a fateful journey in branding and product development when 'New Coke', a reformulated version of the #1 cola soft drink meant to better compete with the emerging threat from Pepsi, landed on store shelves.

The best Chat Bots, like Facebook M, are actually 'Mechanical Turks', i.e. they look like Chat Bots on the surface but in reality the 'bot' is just a front end of a process with human operators backing it up, like the operators the aforementioned voice response systems throw you to when your needs don't fit into the menu options. In a time when text chatting has overtaken phone chatting, this may make a certain amount of sense, but as an evolutionary development rather than a revolutionary one.

Even if, some day, it became possible for a Chat Bot to function in the ideal way, the 'Truly Conversational' system designed to pass the Turing Test, it's hard to imagine why we would then completely forego the use of apps and websites. And managing everything in one place sounds like something people want, until they actually see what that looks like and are reminded that trying to keep everything under one roof is as messy in the digital realm as anywhere else. Simplicity is, in fact, a virtue of chat apps, and bots risk overcomplicating them and trying to turn them into a 'Chat Wide Web'.

On the other hand, supposing again that the perfect Chat Bot were possible, it seems unlikely this would lead to an ecosystem of Chat Bots rather than 'One Bot Per Platform': Siri for iOS and Mac, Cortana for Windows, Google Now for Android, Alexa for Fire OS. Those aren't exactly 'Chat Bots', to be sure, but they all offer an increasingly 'conversational' model of interaction along the same lines as Chat Bots. Maybe a few of their largest competitors will also push their own solutions for their own over-the-top platforms, e.g. Facebook M.

For these companies, offering a 'bot platform' to developers is a no-brainer: they can effectively crowdsource millions and billions of dollars worth of development of their Artificial Intelligence software, soak up and analyze the data on all those bots, and then build the best of them right into their own platforms. But for those developers who take up the platform for their own or client businesses, there should be no illusion: Chat Bots may be here to stay, but you'll only be accelerating the training of the Virtual Assistant platforms that will act as Middle Men between the user and your business. Sooner or later, they'll want a piece of your action for themselves, and their 'bots' will be able to do everything your bot does and a billion times more that it doesn't.

That future is coming, and most of us look forward to it, but for businesses this future is fraught with uncertainty, and its near-term value is mirky at best.

Microsoft And Google Bury The Hatchet

After years of open and covert accusations and complaints to regulators about alleged anticompetitive behavior, Scroogled campaigns, and heated Public Relations battles, Microsoft and Google have agreed to drop all hostilities against each other and compete with each other on merit.

It would have been difficult to imagine this development just a few years ago, and probably says a lot about the new leaders of the companies, Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, and their priorities and personal philosophies of leadership.

Of course, Microsoft seems to have no intention of foregoing their royalty demands from Android partners for their use of certain (allegedly) patented software, so it isn't all roses yet between the two companies.

Microsoft, in particular, helped bankroll the same regulatory hostility through their shadow lobbying efforts that have forced them to, among other things, respond to a flurry of Right To Be Forgotten requests for Bing. It is in their own best interests at this point not to make things even worse.

The 8th update to Google+ for Android this year, version 7.7.0 is rolling out. Along with a bunch of bug fixes, there are four major new features:

Updated 'New Posts' Notification - The in-stream 'New Posts' Notification is now red and appears (when it appears) at the top of the Stream (but auto-hides while scrolling down the Stream), bringing it in line visually with the web version.

Updated Edit and Create Collections - This is a small but noteworthy redesign for people who want to create and/or edit their Collections from the Android app.

Chrome Tab 'Pre Connect' - The app will start loading web pages in Chrome Custom Tab before you tap the link itself, speeding up the browsing experience for the user.
