Big Android BBQ7,788The 2015 Meat & Greet will take place on the Cherry Blossom paddle boat embarking from Alexandria, Virginia. We will begin the evening with a delicious, smoked BABBQ-style dinner prepared by our pit-master Ray Walters afterwards we will depart from the USPTO via chartered buses to the Alexandria waterfront. The 3-hour cruise will tour up the Potomac River from Historic Old Town Alexandria, to the DC Tidal Basin and back (3 hour charter). The BAMG is a perfect opportunity to network with fellow DC developers as well as our sponsors. Find a new partner for that next project you want to tackle, or land that new job you’ve been looking for -- or just relax and enjoy the ride, view of the Cherry Blossoms. The return trip will be capped off with an evening fireworks display (weather-permitting). A full, open bar and light snacks will be included in the cost of your reasonably priced ticket.BAMG Cherry Blossom Riverboat Cruise2015-04-04 16:00:0045

Josh Wilson1,803*Sorry everyone, I don't know what happened, but somehow the event was deleted. I've recreated it, but I can't get the original guest list back, so if you're attending please reconfirm on this event. Again, I apologize for the trouble.* *The Intro*: Explorers far and wide! Come one, come all, as we travel back in time to an age of castles, knights, chivalry and pretty cool sword fights. Back to a time where Google Glass does not exist and these "Witch Goggles" invoke curiosity and a possible burning at the stake. It promises to be an enjoyable evening for all with good food, good company, and a very entertaining performance. For this Glass and Relax, we will be heading to Medieval Times near Baltimore, Maryland. Currently I have the date set for 3/1, but we can adjust that prior to purchasing the tickets if a better date suits the group. These events are predominantly for Glass Explorers, but significant others and others are welcome too. While you may demonstrate your Glass to people if you like, this isn't meant to be a "What is Google Glass" meet up. This is meant to be something we can all attend, have fun, and leave with some enjoyable memories with your fellow Explorers. *The Details*: -I've been in talks with the sales rep and we can get the corporate discount rate if we can get a group of 10 or more people together to go. There are some add on a we can consider too, one that I would recommend is the Royalty Package, which is an extra $10 per person, bit includes guaranteed first or second row seating, some commemorative items (pennant, booklet) and one DVD for the group (would be given out at random, I'm not a contender as we already have one). There's also the appetizers for an additional $9.95 per person, where we would have pre-show appetizers separate from everyone else. The appetizer thing may be nice, but I still would recommend the Royalty package over it.- -The base rate would be about $44 per person, or $54 per person with the Royalty Package. The only downside to doing the group thing is that the tickets must be purchased at least 2 weeks in advance, and they must be purchased by one person, meaning we would all need to pay the same person in advance, be that me or another of the group, in order to get the group rate. That is the portion that I do not like but I understand it. I would prefer not to have to pool the money before hand and have everyone purchase their own ticket, but we could get better rates grouping. - The other option is we all purchase our own tickets via whatever means we like (sometimes groupon has deals) and just meet at the mall prior to the show. If we arrive as a group, we'll be seated as a group. This option is potentially more expensive, but I'm sure many of you would be more comfortable with that. We would all still need to agree on Royalty package or not though in order to still be seated together. *Update*  It looks like they have gift tickets on sale right now. a pack of 4 Royalty package woul#GlassAndRelax Medieval Edition2014-03-01 17:00:0012

A lifetime ago, my best friend and I took on the world together. A pair of Tolkien nerds with a functional understanding of chainmaille, blacksmithing, and medieval combat. We were addicted to a time that wasn't ours, and had great plan for sharing that knowledge with the world for a living. It was naive, but amazing.

When reality set in and we shifted focus to creating families and building careers, knowing that we never grew apart was important. I got a phone call early one Saturday from his wife, who between sobs told me he had died in a terrible car accident. It took me years to learn how to move beyond that loss, during which time an injury to my arm took away the only thing that tethered me to the life I once had. The only way I could cope for a long time was shutting everything about that part of my life out and walk away.

The little girl in this photo is his daughter, who was in the womb when he passed. She's amazing, and I kind of hate myself for missing her grow as much as she has. There's a lot more to her life that I can be a part of though, and I'm genuinely looking forward to it.___

Not sure why folks are surprised that I'm not talking about the price of the OnePlus 2 in my work. It's entirely consistent with the way I talk about every other piece of technology. Price is a relevant and important factor when deciding what you're going to purchase, but starting with the price in the decision making process limits your field in ways that don't make sense to me so I don't write that way.

I've never walked into a furniture store or car dealership and had the person wandering the floor start with asking me what I want to spend. Pick the things that are important to you, and then look at the prices for those things. If the OnePlus 2 is missing things you think are important, the price should be irrelevant because it's not on your list anymore. If it has everything you care about, price now enters the conversation.

My surprise and excitement at the availability of Avengers: Age of Ultron on the +Delta in-flight entertainment system was matched only by my disbelief and disappointment at how the film was edited.

All the swearing had been replaced, and while ordinarily that doesn't bother me in this film it's actually part of the movie. This version of the film also removed a couple of Stark's lines entirely. "Dick move, Banner" and his brief rambling about how he'd be as a ruler of Asgard were just gone.

This experience was made all the more bizarre by the realization that the folks in front of me were watching Get Hard. With the way my movie was edited, it made me wonder what they were even watching.

This was a great chat, and I feel way better about this sort of thing now.

This is a must-listen for you nerd parents out there! We're shaking things up a bit this week as Russell and Jerry continue the discussion about virtual reality, bringing in "techie pediatrician" Dr. Joe Cohen of Austin, Texas, to help answer some burning questions about VR and our children. Is it…___This was a great chat, and I feel way better about this sort of thing now.

This, by the way, is what an overheating phone looks like. Those benchmarks that show processor cores adjusting (and yes, sometimes even stopping altogether) to successfully avoid this behavior even under significant and lasting load, all while never actually dropping a frame, is not overheating.

When your phone can't function because it's got a case on it and its a little warm outside, you've got a problem. When your processor scales back under load, even if it's less load than its predecessor under vaguely similar conditions, that's something else entirely.

Attempted to wade through the contents after reading this and its pretty much exactly as terrible as Jason said it was.

Meanwhile, +Erica Joy is one of the most intelligent and driven folks I've met on that half of the US. In no way does she deserve the derision pointed in her general direction for this.

This is an interesting story.  I don't "know" Erica, but I remembering interacting with/in the same threads as her back when Google+ launched and she struck me as a great person.

I'm actually a pretty big fan of salary transparency.  Not because I think that everyone out there is looking to screw over their coworkers, but because I think it can point to bigger problems (intentional or not) in hiring and raises, so good on her for doing this.

But the main reason I wanted to share this piece is because of the trash that BI calls the comment section.  Shit like the comments left on this article are exactly WHY the idea that people get paid less based on their gender/race is still a thing.  In the comments people said :

1) Comments on how she looks
2) That she's not a "real" engineer. (bullpucky)
3) That she "accepted" her salary so she can't complain (to which the response is, how can you really accept something if you don't know the scale offered to others)
4) That Google should fire her for encouraging discussion of salaries (bullpucky)
5) That the only reason she got a job at Google and now Slack is because she's a POC women (seriously, someone thinks this)

You want to know why people still get so worked up about racial and gender inequality?  Look at those comments..  do you see anyone discussing the merits of the study? No, you see people trivializing her opinion because she's a women and a person of color.

And we STILL want to operate under the myth of a meritocracy?  really? ___Attempted to wade through the contents after reading this and its pretty much exactly as terrible as Jason said it was.

That time right after a photo session when Bill Nye, Sascha Paladino, and NASA Astronauts Dr. Mike Massimino and Dr. Yvonne Cagle geeked out for five minutes about all the new data coming from New Horizons and everyone just stood there perfectly silent, enjoying every second of it.
