I posted a bit more info about the SLAM project here, for those interested in the background story and reading the full text of our submission.

+Teresa Lee and I made it to the finals of the NSF Graduate Education Challenge! We would love your support, if you can take a moment to register and vote for our idea: "Training graduate students in Science Leadership and Management (SLAM)"

Blogs about chemistry tend to get a lot less traffic than those about psychology, but I think this is still solid advice.

Wibbly wobbly airy-wairy...stuff
When air blows past an obstacle, intricate and beautiful vortices can form. When ocean winds blow past islands, the beauty is palpable. And when this is seen from space, well, it's phenomenal.

A well made infographic to demonstrate a surprising trend.

A chilling story. The memory of these students is definitely still alive today in Berkeley chemistry.

Awesome idea! For anyone in science education, trying having kids "bling out" their PPE.

"When the public asks, “Did climate change cause this?” they are asking a confused question. It’s like asking, “Did steroids cause the home run Barry Bonds hit on May 12, 2006?” There’s no way to know whether Bonds would have hit the home run without steroids. But who cares? Steroids mean more home runs. That’s what matters."

Interesting take on the relationship between scientists and science journalists by Soren Wheeler. Sometimes I feel annoyed by cutesy endings and personal anecdotes, but I agree that they come from good intentions.

What a crazy story... these people have to bathe their child in poisonous water, and the police are more concerned that someone took a photo of it.

How does he know my life??? This literally happened to me last week. I was staring for so long at a STEM image (ordered rows of dots representing atoms) that my eyes relaxed and I was seeing in stereo. Fortunately, there was no hidden message...

I love the simple explanation here of why correlation =/= causation.
"Perhaps people who eat lots of eggs are more likely to have allergies but less likely to have cancer."

It never occurred to me before that journals would skimp on the peer review process. In my mind, it is a holy tenet of How Science is Done, so who would ever dream of betraying it? But some of the awful papers I've seen start to make a lot more sense, in light of the vague definition of the word "peer" and the protection that anonymity provides.

"Such a change in attitude should start with graduate advisers, who must fulfill their role as true mentors, helping students explore the range of opportunities that their training has enabled, both inside and outside the box. Crucially, they must make it clear that leaving academe does not suddenly brand them a waste of their mentor's time."
My thoughts exactly! Thanks for the link, +Helen Chappell

My take on this is slightly different than +Elizabeth Boatman's, but I can definitely appreciate her point. It's shameful that manufacturers can take advantage of the rules and claim that their ingredients are "natural" and therefore "healthy".

I hadn't heard the story of Love Canal before... when companies act this way, it's no wonder that our society has an amorphous fear of "chemicals".

"The preference for “rigor” in science education can also interfere with the teaching of science at the college level. For example, in an introductory biology class, students are often required to learn the names of the 10 enzymes that oxidize sugars in a process called glycolysis. But an obsession with such details can obscure any real understanding of the central issue, leaving students with the impression that science is impossibly dull, causing many to shift to a different major."
