Their activity on social media sites, including Google+. has played a big role in the growth of the studio over the past couple of years.  Mike and Nicole will be joining us to share their success story and tell us how they used social media to promote their business.   Many photographers who are getting into social media have questions about whether they should share their photos over social media sites.  Is the risk of people using their photos without purchasing them worth the wide audience potential?  Does it devalue their beautiful work? These are some of the topics that will be discussed as Mike and Nicole take us along on their journey to success! The TGIF Business Networking Hangout is for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to network, give themselves a little promo time on air, share questions and advice, and learn from their peers.  Won't you join us? *Where to Find Past Episodes*  There is a past episode in this event listing, you can find all past episodes at: http://www.youtube.com/user/MeiWorksConsulting/videos *How To Join This Hangout on Air* You MUST send me a request if you would like to be invited into the peanut gallery! Has anyone else noticed the bait & switch going on in the articles that claim that not raising the debt ceiling won't lead to default? Here's where it happens:

"Treasury Secretary Jack Lew says the U.S. has "no option" if the $16.7 trillion debt ceiling isn't raised in the next two weeks, suggesting that the U.S. would have to default on its debts. Not true. The U.S. has more than enough money to pay interest on its debts."

Note that last sentence:

"The U.S. has more than enough money to pay interest on its debts."

Note this part of it:
"to pay interest on"

I'd ask everyone who believes it's not a default when you fail to pay your principal to call any creditor at all, and ask what would happen if you stopped paying the principal on your mortgage/car loan/credit card/other debt... more »

Awesome! I'm glad to see this making a comeback...

This has to be one of the best science Kickstarters I have ever seen.
It is bringing back the original chemistry set in all of it's potentially dangerous glory.
With that being said, as one of the last kids to receive a real chemistry sets before the safety craziness took hold for science education kits, I have to applaud the effort.

This however is the real thing. If you ever wanted to give your budding scientist a chem set, this is it. ___Awesome! I'm glad to see this making a comeback...

My son has been interested in robotics since he was 13. He's now 16 and he and his Dad are building a quad-copter (slowly). He would LOOOVE to be able to focus on the code, instead of the hardware. He taught himself JAVA so he could learn to code collision detection, and now he's learning pathing algorithms, because he wants to be able to make a copter fly autonomously (no remote control) and avoid obstacles. He just got an internship with a makerspace in Cambridge, MA, where he'll be working with some folks from MIT to develop a "DIY drone building" class, based in part on his experience thus far. We live in the mountains of VT, so he'd be shooting local scenery, his obstacle courses, and probably a bunch of crashes! Google has launched a person finder for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan

Google has launched a person finder for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan known as Yolanda in the Philippines, where friends and family can search for information on a loved one or enter information about a person's whereabouts so others know they are safe.

Private aid groups said there was an immediate need for rice, canned foods, clean water, medicine, clothes, shelter and blankets. But U.S. officials said that, just as in other disasters, the best thing Americans can do is donate cash to reputable humanitarian organizations.

Those seeking to send help can go to website for InterAction, a consortium of 180 non-government organizations involved in global assistance programs. Among the members are the American Red Cross, AmeriCares, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Mercy Corps, Oxfam America, Save the Children, U.S. Fund for UNICEF and World Food Program USA.

More on the annoying new privacy-invading "features" of G+

Dear G+,

Thanks for smacking us all with waves of TuberTrolls while still not reinstating the old ability to turn off plus 1 notifications - a really basic thing you could have done to show the power users that you were serious about our requests for better user controls.  I'm really enjoying having my important notifications drowned out by idiots.

Sincerely,

Google+ was pretty cool. Now, with its new data mining and privacy invasion features, not so much. Throw in the lack of willingness to do anything about online harassment/stalking/bullying that seems to befall women - especially women in the tech industry, and I'm getting ready to declare it a failed experiment, and move on.

Google Services Replacements I Recommend

So long to my beloved Google Reader, so now I use Protopage for my RSS feeds:
http://www.protopage.com/
Why I am disgusted with feedly.com:  the mandatory login with Google adds steps and feedly itself ties into the Google data collection behemoth

So long to my beloved iGoogle home page which held all my most valued widgets like weather, RSS, calender, favorite websites, etc.  Now I use Protopage for this as well

So long to Google Search:  when I am logged into a Google service, my search is interrupted by ads and clogged with Google+ posts that mention my search terms.  In addition, about a year ago my google searches became cluttered with "popular" and shopping sites listed in the top results.  Now I use duckduckgo.com an anonymous search service that is awesome!

Getting around paywalls on popular news articles online:  when I am NOT logged into a Google service, then I use Google News.  If you go to a site such as NY Times, their paywall can block you by counting the number of articles you view monthly and try to get you to pay for viewing.  But if you use a search term in Google news with the exact phrase in the article, then when you click a link into the NY Times, it does not count your view in their usage tracking.

Google calendar: since I see no need to share my created calendars, I just don't use it.  I have a nice calendar on protopage.com as a widget and it's fine for my uses.  If I really want detailed calendar features, I use http://www.timeanddate.com/, which has customizable view and print features.  It also works well with screenshots I can then email to friends and family. Also has great conversion and  time/world clock features.  BTW, I have used http://timeticker.com/ for years for the very fastest visual display of world time zones.

Image search:  I like the Bing image search for the ease of searching with terms and the suggested related searches:
http://www.bing.com/images?FORM=Z9LH

For all time best photo dump and storage:  I still use flickr.com and the changes are great for many uses.  It just is annoying for the way it dropped the community involvement through groups.  I miss the social connections once very important to me in making friends around the world through photos.  Now I do use the Google+ theme days and theme pages to discover folks of similar interests.  But I can't easily link to images I post on Google+ and get them out to friends outside of Google+, so why should I use it as my main photo-sharing service?  I don't.

Now, I am searching for a good alternative to Gmail, which I do like, BUT I do not like the way that when I am logged into a google service, ALL THE EMAIL ADDYS of contacts I have within Google+ are displayed and added into my email contacts!  I can't tell you how many strangers have used their search of gmail contacts have tried to contact me in a gmail chat window!  BOO google, this is a horrible invasion of privacy.

Lastly, I just do not visit youtube and plan to leave any comments whatsoever on any video.  I do not want my "tracks" there to be posted in Google+.  This is also an invasion of my privacy.  So if I visit a youtube video, I do it when I am not logged into a google service.  And I've never changed my ID there to my IRL name because I have had a long-established account there under a nick that I have used for my job primarily.  No need for a link into my personal life.

I for one have no interest in following recommendations of contacts that are data mined!  I have no interest in sharing more and more of my life with friends across social networks.  I turned off the Google+ feature of sharing my 1+ posts with others.  I tend to drop contacts where I see way too many of what "so-and-so" has plussed.

I use Dropbox more and more to share private images and get images to family for their downloads.  I use Evernote more and more to save my bookmarked articles and links.

And finally, Chrome is an annoyance to me for it acts up often and is very quirky.  It handles bookmarks/favorites poorly for organization.  I'll only use it if I have to use it for photos posted to Google+ or editing features in Google+ photos and albums.  And I will use it for nice Chrome extensions needed for Google+ management.  And it's a fast browser for my iPhone.  But other than occasional uses, Firefox remains my trusty go-to-browser, customized fine for many years with the uses I put it too.

What are your Google feature alternatives?  And why?

The film was written, filmed, and edited for public showing in two weekends. Teams were given a basic narrative to include in all the films: getting lost in the woods, taking shelter by a fallen log, and remembering a great grandfather's spooky story. Additional rules included: no blood, no gore, no violence, and no swearing.

Now to figure out how to get the lighting settings on both cameras to match, since their light levels were way out of synch, despite looking the same through the viewfinders and having exposure levels set the same.

I'd ask everyone who believes it's not a default when you fail to pay your principal to call any creditor at all, and ask what would happen if you stopped paying the principal on your mortgage/car loan/credit card/other debt instrument.

The answer: you would be in default on the loan.

The creditors to whom the US owes money are NOT amused by the threat to stop paying what we owe. They don't give two hoots and a holler about whether or not we might keep paying interest, when we're threatening to not give them back the money we borrowed from them. They park that money in US treasuries so that they have a safe liquid asset which they can access quickly if they need the money to finance a big project or a big trade deal.

If we say, "nope, you can't have it back." They're not going to respond with, "Oh, ok, I guess we'll just let you keep it, then."

Who didn't see this coming? (Hint: a bunch of idiots in the republican party.)

"The prolonged negotiations over raising the debt ceiling ... risks undermining confidence in the role of the U.S. dollar as the preeminent global reserve currency, by casting doubt over the full faith and credit of the U.S.," Fitch said in laying out its reasons for the possible downgrade. "This 'faith' is a key reason why the U.S. 'AAA' rating can tolerate a substantially higher level of public debt than other 'AAA' sovereigns."

Politely (really - it's much more effective) ask the principal to rescind the punishment of this student who was kind and responsible enough to prevent a drunk friend from driving home from a party. Here is the public contact data for the Principal from the school's web site:

One question: why our schools' administrations are so full of idiots and jackasses?
Rhetorical question, I know.
What will be next? Suspension and punishment because student has to walk past a liquor store and school has "zero brains tolerance policy" against alcohol?
Disgusting. ___Politely (really - it's much more effective) ask the principal to rescind the punishment of this student who was kind and responsible enough to prevent a drunk friend from driving home from a party. Here is the public contact data for the Principal from the school's web site:

Anyone out there interested in the Lean Startup Machine event in December in San Francisco?  If so, if use this link to get more info, I'll be entered to possibly win a free ticket. I could really use a free ticket. :-)

This isn't great news, even though Chrome users are better protected since Acrobat / Flash run inside sandboxes. Still, quite concerning.

US Capitol Lockdown
(Note: Noting is confirmed, yet, by the police, so take the following with a grain of salt)
The story as reported thus far: someone tried to run through the NE security gate at the White House. When the driver failed, they took off toward 2nd street, apparently hitting a police officer along the way, then running into the median strip. The driver was shot.

Popular Science Magazine has found that allowing reader comments on scientific articles causes readers to misunderstand the science more than they would without the reader comments. So, off they go.
