Digital Connections for Older People

The Global Impact Challenge from +Google supports British non-profits using tech to tackle the world's toughest problems.

One finalist is +Age UK who plans to "inspire older people to reminisce using technology, and, in doing so, deliver digital training to open a host of opportunities, like reconnecting with loved ones, pursuing hobbies and saving money."

I need to watch the rest of them myself. This one just caught my eye because I have seen the loneliness and isolation the elderly can feel at times. Not understanding technology can make it even worse, so I think this is a worthwhile cause.

The World's First Braille Smartphone

I've been loosely following this concept since I saw a +TED talk about it awhile ago. Here's a little more about the braille smartphone and how it can help the visually impaired do so many different things.

"Converting electronic text into Braille is pretty impressive, but initial designs show that a Braille smart phone will do much more than that. Perhaps most impressively, the phone will be able to read printed documents and turn them into Braille."

"By using a smart phone’s camera, designers have found a way to translate images of words into Braille. It’s impossible to imagine how much this will benefit blind people. Suddenly, they won’t need special Braille editions of books and newspapers." They’ll just use their phones to read printed materials.

I missed the lead up to this marketing promotion, and only saw video of what occurred after it happened. I guess I need to be on Twitter more.

3D Printed Vinyl Records

New uses for 3D printers are being explored every day. This one is converting digital music to records. The sound quality is pretty terrible at this stage, but it's a start. We'll see how this develops over time. 

How it works: "The grooves of the 3D record are shaped by extremely fine layers of plastic resin that are added in layers based on the blueprint of a digital model...the entire process demonstrating a new form of additive manufacturing, layering sheets in a 3D model built from the ground up rather than regular manufacturing that relies on cutting, shaping, and refining material – a subtractive process."

Facial Recognition Using Google Glass & Google+ Together

Yet another reason to have your Google+ account set up - facial recognition using Glass! 

+Jesse Stay shares some early findings since receiving his Google Glass Explorer Edition

It's not the best setup, but it can get the job done. When taking a photo of someone, and sharing it to G+, they can be tagged and notified of the tag in order to confirm.  It would be interesting to see if +Google+ Developers could eventually use the data received from photos and profile information shared on G+ to deliver real-time facial recognition in some kind of live viewing mode.

Americans Fed Up With Irrelevant Ads Should Give Up Their Data

While advertisers know that what consumers say they do, and what they actually do can often be completely different, there's something to be said for this data on what consumers find annoying from brands, and how they say they respond.

If your brand's tactics fall more into the spammer category, you may want to adjust your approach or risk turning off your market. Ads need to be strategically placed, not omnipresent. Providing some incentive to motivate action goes a long way too. 

As a consumer, I can definitely relate to some of these frustrations with emails and pop-up ads. Though, if you are among the 19% reporting irrelevant ads are getting in the way of sexual activity, you need to get a handle on your life.
