Last year I supported a journalism project on Kickstarter called MATTER. Tagline: "The world is full of big stories. We don't want them to go missing." As a reward, I've gotten free access to the first few pieces. The quality of reporting and writing is exceptional, as one might expect from the people involved. But I've been somewhat disappointed by the content.
The first MATTER story, "Do No Harm," was about apotemnophilia, a compulsive desire for amputation. I thought, haven't I read about this before? Yes, there it was on my bookshelf: "Brain Games," in the Best American Science and Nature Writing of 2010. MATTER's latest story, "Bad Blood," about the radioactive murder of a Russian dissident, has given me the same sense of deja vu, this time reminding me of "The First Assassination of the Twenty-First Century" from BASNW... more »

Notes from Nature has an incredibly elegant interface and a noble goal: to crowdsource the transcription of the world's biological collections. I just did a lovely cuckoo wasp. Highly addictive. H/t +CA Clark

If I had known about these years ago, I might be known as "Pugglejo" instead of "Plattyjo". Fascinating creatures!

Lovely piece about the disastrous state of US health care--and how to fix it. (It's pleasing that their excerpt is exactly the one I would have chosen.)

Celebrate Halloween with some real anatomical accuracy! (This will be my last KQED post for a while, as I'm going on maternity leave in November.)

I'm very fond of both parasites and babies, so it hurts me when people get them confused. Particularly interested to hear +Tommy Leung 's thoughts on the matter!

A good point about what kinds of studies get published in what kinds of journals--it's not just journalists who are biased toward the new and exciting.

Vampire squid: they are weird. Also they managed to remind me of my thesis subjects. I swear I'm not obsessed--there really is a connection!

Do you think the next pandemic is more likely to come from natural pathogens or a scientist's lab? Or won't it come at all?

I got to profile this gorgeous mural that transects California's eco-zones. The artist who painted it is pretty cool too.

L'Shana Tova! I made challah, one 3-strand and one 4-strand, then started reading about braid theory in topology, and learned that it is actually applicable to fluid dynamics! Who knew? http://www.math.ufl.edu/~boyland/stir.pdf
Also, the bread is delicious.

Does anyone else used Streamified? For a while there it was a handy cross-posting tool, but their latest updates seem to have created a crash-prone, unfriendly product. Maybe I'm just not using it right?

This has almost nothing to do with science, though two journal articles are briefly referenced. But the topic is irresistible, and what's more, the writing is inspired.

Wild! I had no idea the weather was such a hotbed of theoretical physics mystery. This makes me feel a lot better about the fact that I've never really understood thunderstorms.

My remarkable Jr. High science and math teacher passed away last week. Fitz's thoughts on education ring as true today as they did in 1987 when he called for "citizens who have a general awareness of problems--not just scientists who know only science or people in the humanities who know only humanities, but people who can understand both sides of the spectrum."
