Last year I supported a journalism project on Kickstarter called MATTER. Tagline: "The world is full of big stories. We don't want them to go missing." As a reward, I've gotten free access to the first few pieces. The quality of reporting and writing is exceptional, as one might expect from the people involved. But I've been somewhat disappointed by the content.

The first MATTER story, "Do No Harm," was about apotemnophilia, a compulsive desire for amputation. I thought, haven't I read about this before? Yes, there it was on my bookshelf: "Brain Games," in the Best American Science and Nature Writing of 2010. MATTER's latest story, "Bad Blood," about the radioactive murder of a Russian dissident, has given me the same sense of deja vu, this time reminding me of "The First Assassination of the Twenty-First Century" from BASNW... more »
