The Toy Box - 25/05/2013
This is my second set of fire pois. They are handmade by me - except for the loops where they are held which were sewn by a friend with a sewing machine (and mad sewing skills, too).
These pois are based on the design of the first set. The first set was loaned to a feral who reckoned she'd return them after her weekend of fire spinning out bush. I've yet to see them - and it's been six years.
The third set of fire pois are in Melbourne where they will stay for future visits and fire spins. They are not handmade but were purchased from juggleart.com - when I make more pois in the future, I will certainly use their design. They move well, there are no hitches whilst spinning and they are smoooooth.
The fourth set is currently hanging on my book case. They are also from juggleart.com and they've yet to be burnt i... more »

Cables from Down South - 25/05/2013
We haven't quite made it to the markets yet, +Cathy Samuels and I, but I can already smell the coffee... okay, okay - I can't really smell the coffee as we're still some hundreds of metres away - but I hadn't had my morning coffee hit as yet so I was imagining I could smell the coffee.
Maybe.

To Kinglake and Return
On my last Tuesday in Melbourne, +Vikki Sinnott and I drove (well - I passengered - Vikki's the driver) to Kinglake to re-visit areas we've been to before as well as make a trip to Masons Falls - a new experience for both of us.
There are cables - of course - as well as textures and a bit of play with the ND filter (that, in particular, needs more play as it was only a day old at the time).

Lights, camera, rope... ACTION!
It was a great way to spend a Saturday night. Dinner with +Shari Mattox & +Peter Sherriff , Pink Floyd cranking out on the stereo, a torch, some rope, a ladder and cameras.
Hanging a torch from the ceiling, set it spinning in a darkened room, camera's pointing up.... lay on the floor while Pink Floyd CD's blast wonderful tunes to warm the soul. Excellent!

In the Back of a Ute
Earlier in the week, +Benjamin Kappel Schmidt posted a rather #Cableicous image of cut cables and I noted that I'd spotted something similar on the back a ute. I didn't manage to get an image of those cables on that ute but I did manage to make an image of these cables on another ute.
The huntering and gatherering is complete - it's now time for an afternoon nap (after a spot of reading, of course).

Walks in Water
I caught the train at Jewell Station and headed to Flinders Street to then catch another train to Glen Iris to catch up with an old mate. We nattered for a while at his place and then headed out for our Walk and Talk. We walked, we talked, we sat, we talked. He tried to convince me the water was refreshing. My tropically acclimatised body was having none of it - so I sat on the bank and watched him walk in the water: that was refreshing enough for me.

Antejentacular Ponderings
The coffee is ready so I'll ponder this image whilst I consider breakfast: good morning, welcome to my Saturday.
After Thursday night's rain, it seems that the Dry Season has arrived: tis a good thing that we pulled the doona out of cupboard before sleeping time - the temperature was down in the teens over night.

The Toy Box - 24/05/2013
Meet today's toy: his name is Fred and he is newly hatched.
The younger lad is having a sleepover and, before pasta for dinner, we helped Fred get out of his egg. Fred's now sitting on the counter under a bright light such that his glow can develop. The younger lad is now in bed reading and will have another look at Fred before it's sleeping time.
G'day Fred - welcome to the collection.

Splashing for +Al Christensen
By the time I had my lunch break, the sun was well and truly out and about and there were mostly light, fluffy clouds about the place and most of the puddles were gone. I did manage, however, to find a small puddle to do some splashing in though jumping into it wasn't really an option.
Will this do, Al?

Beginning of the Dry
This past Wet Season was rather dry - it's as if we had a nine month buildup to the Wet that never came. On the way home from the working place yesterday, the sky was full of big clouds, some dark, some bright: more storm weather than the beginning of the Dry.
The thunder and lightning started not long after I made it home after the bus. The rains started a few hours later. It has rained most of the night and it's raining now.

Mr Rabbit makes rhubarb chocolate chili tart
Start with beautiful fresh rhubarb, roasted in the oven with a sprinkle of sugar. (180°C for 10 mins)
Prepare a pâte sucrée replacing 30g of the flour with cocoa. Backe blind at 180°C until the base is biscuity (depends on the thickness of the pastry). Mine was about 30 mins. Leave to cool.
Make a chili ganache with 200g dark choc (I used 72% Frey) & 50g chili chocolate. Or use 250g dark and add chili to taste. Or not...
Break choc into smallish pieces. Try not to eat it all.
Heat 2 dl 35% cream to almost boiling and pour over chocolate. Leave to sit for a few minutes before stirring gently to blend. Leave to cool.
Line tart with ganache, layer rhubarb over it, and cover with remaining ganache.
Voilà

I scraped my knee, I did, I did: the adhesive bandages worked a treat. And they didn't hurt when I yanked it off, either. Two miracles in one, perhaps?

The Toy Box - 22/05/2013
This is the newest toy in my collection of toys (I can't really count the toys that I got for the lads as being min, can I?) and it was a gift from #goodman +Paul Pavlinovich. For those of you who bother checking the EXIF information for images, you'll note that it's geotagged as being at Mount Donna Buang - that's the location where Paul took it out of his bike bag and passed it to me.
The orb lights up when you bounce it and it makes me laugh every time I do so: it's obviously one of those things that I will always cherish - even if it gets taken away for a few days by the lads (which has happened twice already).
Thanks Paul, muchly.

In case you missed noticing, there is a huge civil disobedience campaign against Coca Cola and its products here in Australia. It's called Out of Order and it tells Coke that they were Out of Order to come into this country and ban a viable container recycling scheme in the Northern Territory through a loophole in the law there.
+Greenpeace Australia Pacific has taken on Coca Cola Amatil as well by means of an advertising campaign using online media. Watch the video. Get informed. Stop buying Coke and Coke products.

The Toy Box - 21/05/2013
As well as the myriad #Bionicles that were gifted to myself and the lads some years back, the boxes also contained a partial Lego Mindstorms set. Fortunately, that partial included this bit of beautiful nerd heritage: a Lego Camera.
http://rantz.me/?page_id=3471
This camera has been used for broadcasting Pond Cam for the past five years and I trust that it still has many years of service left in it.
It also gets used, occasionally, to shoot other projects but it certainly works well - your kilometrage on this may vary - for the special purpose of the pond.

My main medium for stuff outside of the interwbez is radio. More particularly, it's Radio National on my ABC. I listened to this particular show last evening and have just listened to it again this morning.
There is so much Terry Platchek (Medical Director for Performance Improvement, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital) that Terry identifies in this piece that needs to be fixed in the hospital system - around the Western world - that I see and deal with as part of my day job. _So much_.

The arguments and false controversy over whether global warming exists (it does) and whether humans are responsible (we are) are ones generated by the public due to politics, deniers, interest groups, and lack of education.
According to the majority of climatologists and other informed analysts, most of the claims made by global warming skeptics on TV, online, and in print aren't based on legitimate science.
An extensive review of the scientific literature was just published on May 15, 2013 in Environmental Research Letters and is the most comprehensive meta-analysis on the subject ever performed to date.
The review looked at ~12,000 international studies on climate change from peer-reviewed scientific journals over the past 2 decades (1991-2011). Of these, ~4,000 studies specifically evaluated and expressed a stance on anthropogenic global warming: an... more »

You've kept me on top of that computing box for over a year: your time is up - I am coming down and I am coming down now. No excuses will be heard, no apologies accepted. I am your excitement for the day: get used to it..

Above and Below
I still haven't acclimatised to the changes in how the newest incarnation of G+ doesn't share images added to albums as a single image with the album linked (other than for those uploaded with Auto-Backup, of course). As such, I've uploaded a bit of #Cableicous beauty shot whilst in Melbourne, re-ordered the album such that the image I wanted to share is at the top (or the beginning - depending on your view-point) and now share it with you.
I've read that this is a bug and that it's being fixed - I hope that's an accurate reflection of the situation.
