Derek Ross1,221,966*The original Android Hangout Show returns!* Hi. I was the first guy on Google+ to start doing live Hangout Shows for Android news and discussion way back during the Hangouts on Air beta days. My team and I ran a successful Android related Hangout show for for 74 weeks in a row before our hiatus. Our show was watched and listed to by thousands every week via Google+, YouTube, and various Podcast platforms. *The band is getting back together...* ...or at least the lead singer. I've come to realize that the shows offered today just don't cut it. They're not professional. They're boring. They don't offer any value such as show guests or giveaways. They're just not what my team used to provide and it angers me. I'm going to try my best to change that for you guys. I'm tentatively going to relaunch our Android on Air show next month. The time and date are subject to change pending renovations to my office. If everything can be completed by then, I'll be back in business providing you with quality HoA Android goodness. The original Android Hangout Show returns!2014-06-06 03:00:0099

If you ever said to yourself, how can Samsung make TouchWiz worse, well, this is how. Apparently some lucky Samsung users are getting advertisements pushed to their phones. Sweet, more ads! Said no one ever.

Version numbers really don't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. However, for those that need validation on Android Marshmallow getting a full version bump, here's a nice feature list reminder.

Some people believe that Android M doesn’t deserve the title of Android 6, mainly because it isn’t as big of an overhaul as previous Android 1.x releases have been or because it doesn’t accompany the visual changes we’ve seen on previous 1.x releases.

While on some level this is true, going over the long list of improvements does really put into perspective how big of an update M truly is.

Let’s go over all the features we will(or might) see on Android M:
• Now on Tap
• Permissions Management
• SD Cards can be “merged” with internal storage
• Android Pay
• Native fingerprint authentication
• Automatic app data backups
• App Links (you’re going to see less of those “what do you want to open this in?” prompts)
• Doze and App Standby
• Multi Window(currently hidden, uncertain future)
• Theming support(currently hidden, uncertain future)
• Dark theme(removed, uncertain future)
• Customisable Quick Toggles along with other UI tweaking
• Visual Voicemail Support
• Redesign of the Clock Widget and Music Identification Widget
• New “Memory” Section in Settings(it was there before, but hidden)
• Support for deleting screenshots directly through the notification centre after they’ve been taken
• Landscape mode available for the Google Now Launcher(feature will likely be backported to older versions of Android)
• New app and widget drawer with scroll bar support and vertical scrolling
• Built-In File Manager receives a bump in functionality
• Native tap to wake support
• Ability to disable “heads up” or “peeking” notifications
• Native 4K output support
• Stricter APK validation
• MIDI support
• USB Type C support
• New boot animation
• Introduction of a “voice interaction” API to allow better interaction with voice actions in apps
• Toggling battery saver by voice
• Ability to undo and redo text changes with bluetooth keyboard shortcuts
• Multi-selection to merge, delete or share has been added in the contacts application
• Faster text selection along with a floating toolbar for text actions
• Default apps UI
• Direct share can allow you directly share stuff with contacts through the share menu
• Much more granular app info
• Native bluetooth stylus support
• Split-screen keyboard
• Better do not disturb along with repeat caller exceptions
• Bluetooth scanning to improve location accuracy
• Native flashlight API
• Easier access to Multi volume controls(ringer, media, alarm)
• Smoother volume scrubbing (credits to Jason Efstathiou)

Putting all those features aside there are also a number of under-the-hood improvements that seem to have had a very positive impact on both performance and power usage.

I’m puzzled as to how someone could call this a “minor” update.

Huawei Watch finally shows up with premium pricing and iOS support?

It's happening. The Huawei Watch is finally available for pre-order on Amazon and ships on September 2nd. Also, the description mentions iOS support. If that's true, it looks like all of the rumors and code hints last Spring about iOS support were accurate.

Which one do you want?

Random thoughts on Android Wear's new Together Watchface

Together is pretty fun and neat, being able to send quirky messages, doodles, emjois, and photos to the person on the other end. That said, I think my wife needs a smartwatch now. +Jeremy Waite is probably getting tired of me changing his watchface background to pictures of me naked.

Now, having these two talented guys on one podcast is interesting, but what's even more interesting was the topic of discussion this week: iOS and the iPhone.

These guys talked up and down what they mostly liked about the iPhone hardware, software, the whole experience, and why they're using an iPhone as their daily driver versus an Android phone, the platform that pays their bills.

I'm sure these guys will catch a little bit of hate mail in their inbox over the next few days, which is a bit saddening.

2) With Android, we put up with a lot of shit for the sake of customization or doing 'cool things'.

I've never used an iOS device for more than a few seconds, setting up someone's WiFi or configuring someone's email settings. I personally cannot stand the look and feel of the OS and would never use it as my personal device.

Anyways, give the show a listen, it's definitely insightful.___

LG's new Nexus display panel spotted online

Well, you can tell it's Nexus season when we're comparing third party mockups based CAD files with supposed display panels leaked online. As insane as that sounds, the two devices do seem similar and as a bonus, the bezel seems smaller on the leaked panel. I love the hype, but seeing as we have a few months still, all this does it make the wait seem even longer.

The Amazon Fire Phone is done and so are workers from the product's team. This phone was doomed from the start, launching overpriced and with exclusives. No one should be surprised by this.

iPhone 6S rumored to include animated wallpapers

A new report suggests that the latest iPhone will included live wallpapers, a feature that's been available on Android since the beginning. 9to5Mac reports at least 3 animated wallpapers that will be included: animated fish, a koi pond, and colorful arrays of smoke. Other iPhone 6S rumors include Force Touch display and camera improvements.

Amazon's Free App of the Day has been retired, say hello to Underground

Amazon’s “Free App of the Day” program — where they’d offer up popular Android apps and games free for 24 hours — is officially dead. All is not lost though. Amazon is launching a brand new method for getting free apps and free in app purchases, one they say will actually benefit developers. You'll have to download Amazon Underground to get started.

So... do any of you actually use Amazon's app store? I find having two app stores, Google's and Amazon's a bit redundant. At least in the past, Amazon's apps weren't updated as fast as Google's or sometimes vice versa and app updates would sometimes fight or not play nicely. I haven't used Amazon's app store in a while. Should I?

I haven't purchased one yet, I have no need with my current Netgear Nighthawk working beautifully and the fact that's Google hasn't enabled the built in Weave and ZigBee radios. When they do or when the ASUS variant is available, I'll reconsider.

Did you get one? Or are you waiting for more features to come or the ASUS model?

If you haven't had time to check out YouTube Gaming, here's a nice overview and first impressions video. I still think Google's offering has all of the tools it needs to take on Twitch. Will Google be successful? Sure they will. They have the network infrastructure, technology, and the user base for it. Will Twitch be left in a smoking crater? No, not so much. Both platforms will continue to thrive for a while.

Facebook's personal assistant is called M and lives in Messenger

Unlike other AI-based services such as Google Now, Cortana, and Siri, Facebook's M completes tasks on your behalf thanks to a group of real life people doing the ordering, booking, and making appointments for you. So, it's not really like other personal assistants at all, it's more like Fancy Hands, with a tiny bit of automated responses.

Meh.

I could tell after an evening out that the air quality was pretty bad. Breathing just felt odd. Like I had been breathing in smoke. I just wasn't satisfied after taking a deep breath.

Beer jelly exists. That is all.

IPA for breakfast? Grains on your grains?

A former archaeologist named Nancy Warner launched a company called Potlicker to make jam from beer.

Beer Jelly comes in flavors like ale, apricot ale, "heady" (tastes like Heady Topper, maybe?), Hefeweizen, pumpkin ale IPA, black IPA, oatmeal stout, porter and others. (Note: It's alcohol-free.)

A few weeks back, +Koushik Dutta gave me an early look at his upcoming project called Vysor. This tool allows anyone, but directed towards developers, to easily mirror your Android device onto your computer with full keyboard and mouse support.

I didn't notice it during my testing, but apparently you can create a shareable link and give that link to other users so that they can remotely test your device or application. What a great way to provide a demo for an upcoming application or for remote teams to work together, huh?

Vysor Share

Remote screen and ADB access

There's a few tools already out that that lets you control your Android through your PC. Vysor isn't unique in that regard. However, I think I have the other apps beat in with seamless setup and compatibility (no root to boot). :)

However, I had actually envisioned Vysor as a developer tool. Vysor gives you all the benefits of a physical device, but with the ease and integration of an emulator in your development environment.

The headline feature of Vysor is Vysor Share. You can share your device to another Vysor user, across the office or across the globe. This means screen and ADB. This is something I've wanted as an indie dev for a long time: a way to deploy and debug on a remote tester's device. It's as easy as sending a link.

Vysor was actually leaked before I was ready to release, but the roadmap also includes Vysor Server: a device farm that your Android dev team can access remotely. Test device specific issues, run automated suites across a dozen devices, etc. You don't need to pass test devices around anymore, just access them through Vysor.

Supposed Huawei Nexus leaks, shows us 5.7 inches of Angler ugliness

Ah yes, Nexus season. My favorite time of year... Here we see that Google and Huawei decided to make a phone as ugly as the deep sea creature itself, by putting an ugly black bar across the top of the rear of the phone. It's ugly, but I'll probably never see it, as I'll be rocking some sort of skin from +dbrand.

The phone in question does match +Steve Hemmerstoffer's previous renders based on provided dimensions, but the bootloader image says Angler-V4 so it's possible that this is still early hardware and not finalized.

The bootloader also reveals a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. I guess that puts to rest the Snapdragon 820 report by +Evan Blass.

Do you think these pics are legit or are you calling a fake?

Google Maps now makes it even easier to post reviews and food pics

Google has really been stepping up their reviews game the past year with the launch of +Google Local Guides. For those not familiar. the program basically gamifies reviewing, allowing reviewers to level up and receive perks along the way. Google also added various survey questions about establishments too, allowing them to build a crowd sourced database of information from available WiFi to the quietness of a restaurant. Google seems to be doing a great job at collecting information and reviews, so now they're moving on to making sure restaurants and businesses have plenty of photos to go along with their Google Maps listing. If you snag a photo of a delicious meal at a restaurant, you'll now get a notification popup allowing you to share it to the world in just two taps.
