Space Fan News!6,561,632Hello Space Fans! If there's one question that +Tony Darnell and +Scott Lewis have been asked more than any, it's "what telescope should I buy?". With the holidays in full swing, many are eager to either go buy the biggest, most expensive telescope they can or just find a local Super Duper Mart, buying what they have there. With so many things to consider along with some potentially confusing terminology being used, it's extremely easy to be overwhelmed as to what you should do when first buying a telescope.  Well have no fear, your favorite dynamic duo will be hosting a Hangout On Air to help answer any questions and give some helpful tips, tricks and teasers into the best way to get started in observing the Universe! As a special treat, +Gary Gonnella, +Stuart Forman and +Peter Lake will also be joining the hangout to share their experience in getting into the amazing world of citizen astronomy and astrophotography. These three are powerhouses when it comes to observing from home, on the road or even remotely, and they will undoubtedly be able to bring a lot of information to the show! So how do ask your questions? You can always leave your questions and comments here in the Event page, as well as on YouTube when the show goes live. Also, the Q&A app will be in use while live, so you can interact directly with the crew! (Just like downtown)Beginner's guide to buying a telescope2013-12-19 03:00:00179

Can false memories for both pleasurable and aversive events be artificially created? What about false memories for more than just contexts — false memories for objects, food or other mice? These are the once seemingly sci-fi questions that can now be experimentally tackled in the lab.” Check out our second Geek Week Hangout on Thursday, Aug 8 at 2 PM: http://goo.gl/EqHLtX Faking It: Neuroscience of Memory at MIT2013-08-06 20:00:0050

Hubble Space Telescope7,318,954The #Hubble Space Telecope is poised to provide us with new images of Comet #ISON as it approaches the inner solar system.  In the coming months, we'll get views of the comet from a perspective only #Hubble can provide. Here's the url to the #ISON  blog: http://hubblesite.org/go/ison The approach of this comet has generated a lot of excitement, it is going to pass extremely close to the sun and when it does, astronomers tell us this may be among the brightest comets we've ever seen hanging in our night sky. Or will it be a dud? Well, we're going to talk about that and a whole lot more: Is it going to hit us? Where did it come from? How big is it? What's it made of? What's so great about comets anyway? What if it breaks up?  Will the pieces hit us? How can I get a comet named after me? Is Scott's head a comet nucleus? Please join +Tony Darnell, +Alberto Conti and +Scott Lewis as they discuss these and any other questions you can think to ask to some of the planetary scientists working at the Space Telescope Science Institute. A spherical video (virtual reality style!) that demonstrates spherical video editing with Möbius transformations!

It gets pretty trippy when you basically find yourself standing in the middle of Vi Hart's face, lol! Read +Henry Segerman's awesome blog post here:

Weekly self-therapy vlog (2016, Week 2)
learningnerd.com/2016/self-therapy-vlog-2/ Every week, I'm making an appointment with myself to reflect on my challenges, review my progress, and try to make deliberate, incremental improvements to my life.

The first week of January was eventful! I finished 100 video blogs in 100 days, gave a talk at a local high school, and started a course to learn computer science from first principles. But the focus of this week’s self-therapy session is my anxiety – more specifically, adult separation anxiety. I made some good progress, though! The strategy I came up with last week was a success, and I had a fun and short visit with my family and stuck with my original plan.

My last daily video blog! (Daily Learning Vlog #100)
learningnerd.com/daily-learning-100/ This is it! A quick vlog to reflect on what I learned from making 100 videos in 100 days. Thanks to everyone who shared this crazy journey with me, because our conversations are what made this all worthwhile! As for what's next... I'll still make 3 videos next week and I hope to gradually transition away from thrown-together vlogs and towards more polished videos again. For right now, though, I just can't wait to experience a day without doing any filming or video editing -- I forgot what that feels like!

Being confused is fun and good for learning! (Daily Vlog #99)
learningnerd.com/daily-learning-99/

Just a quick personal check-in, plus a couple thoughts on my learning process and why I'm nervous about the talk I'm giving at a high school tomorrow. Eeek, teenagers! Nah, I'm sure it will be fun once I get over my nerves.

Playing with truth tables and Boolean algebra (Daily Learning Vlog #98)
learningnerd.com/daily-learning-98/
Today I finally started exploring what I've learned so far from the NAND2Tetris course. I had fun matching up the logic gate names to their truth tables and then checked my understanding of Boolean algebra by reducing an expression down to its simplest form. It was a fun few minutes!

Checking my understanding (Daily Learning Vlog #97)
learningnerd.com/daily-learning-97/

When you only have 5 minutes to spare and you're half-asleep, how can you still make progress towards a learning goal? Do a quick review, of course! I hadn't looked at NAND2Tetris (nand2tetris.org) in a while so I gave myself a tiny challenge: see how much I could remember from Chapter 1 off the top of my head.

Thoughts on my programming workshops (Daily Learning Vlog #96)
learningnerd.com/daily-learning-96/

Today I taught the first Learn to Code LA (http://learntocodela.org) workshop of the year, and as we approach our one-year anniversary (with over 2000 videos!), I reflect for a moment on how I feel about it at the moment. I may have come across as a bit more pessimistic than I really feel, probably just because I was really tired when I recorded this.

2016 Week 1 Self-therapy vlog (Daily Learning Vlog #95)
learningnerd.com/daily-learning-95/

Today I experimented to see what a self-therapy video blog might look like. And I may also post the unedited version here once I have time to upload it. I also started a personal changelog (see blog) to track my efforts to reprogram my brain and conquer anxiety and my other most personal obstacles.

First look at NAND2Tetris hardware simulator (Daily Learning Vlog #94)
learningnerd.com/daily-learning-94/
I spent 30 minutes poking around the software tools for #NAND2Tetris (nand2tetris.org), so here's what that looked like. Boring? Yes. But I'm having fun experimenting with how the act of documenting my learning process in different ways can alter the learning process itself. It seems to spur me on to keep trying when I might normally give up.

Dad teaches me how to subtract (Math Month Day 23)
learningnerd.com/math-day-23/

I'm 70% done with 6th grade math on Khan Academy, but subtraction still drives me crazy! My dad taught me a new subtraction algorithm, which was apparently the most common algorithm taught between 1700 and 1900 -- but more on that later, once I figure out how to get access to the academic journals. ;)

Christmas makes me sad and non-mathy (Math Month Day 21)

Aside from getting up to 6th grade math on Khan Academy and doing non-math work, I reflected on a strange reaction I had to Christmas trees while walking around the city. Wow, I really miss my mom today and it hurts. But I'm glad I can still smile about the good memories I have of her, and I'm thankful for the opportunity to do what I know would make her proud.

Sleepy math after a busy day (Math Month Day 16)
learningnerd.com/math-day-16/

Today was a wonderful and busy day between my interview with my mathematician friend and other social adventures, so I just rambled a bit when I got home tonight and did 5 minutes of arithmetic practice in bed while I was half-asleep. Eh, at least it's better than nothing!

My first day as a math tutor (Math Month Day 15)
learningnerd.com/math-day-15/

I joined my friend John to help tutor people at The Midnight Mission in downtown Los Angeles, my first time tutoring anyone! It was so inspiring to be in a math class where everyone wanted to be there. I can't wait to go back -- maybe one day I'll even teach a class! Today I also finished fourth grade math on Khan Academy, woohoo!

Solving the Borromean hairpins puzzle (Math Day 13)
learningnerd.com/math-day-13/

I can't remember the last time I tried to solve any kind of puzzle. Why'd I ever stop?! Puzzles are so fun!! So here's proof that I did solve the Borromean hairpins puzzle! Today was another busy day, so aside from doing more arithmetic practice, I quickly spliced together some new footage with clips from my interview with mathematician Henry Segerman and my first time using a 3D printer.

A minute of practice (Math Immersion Month Day 12)
learningnerd.com/math-day-12/

I squeezed in an hour of practice on Khan Academy today, but no time for anything creative. I have a challenge against my online friend Chris Lucas to see who can get farther in math this month! Aside from that, I'm just busy working on a paid side project and trying to recover from this cold I've been fighting on and off.

My mathy interview with Alex, a random cool dude! (Day 8)
http://learningnerd.com/math-day-8/

This was the first time I've filmed an interview with someone other than my parents, woohoo! We talked a bit about number theory, cryptography, a must-see math movie ("Pi"), and why math is cool! Big thanks to Null Space Labs (http://032.la/) for providing an awesome hackerspace full of nerds who are willing to be on camera! ;) Today I also made two or three half-finished videos, which I'll share later.

My plan to kill the "math person" myth (Math Month Day 2)
learningnerd.com/math-day-2/

After realizing that my assumptions about myself were completely wrong, I spent some time learning about just how destructive the "math person" myth can be, and I created version 1 of my plan to squash my own "not a math person" myth once and for all.

Huge thanks to Saramoira Shields for making this excellent video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Xs9aGVUZ3YA) and pointing me to the articles I read today!
