Space Fan News!3,035,059Hello Space Fans!If there's one question that +Tony Darnell and +Scott Lewis have been asked more than any, it's "what telescope should I buy?". With the holidays in full swing, many are eager to either go buy the biggest, most expensive telescope they can or just find a local Super Duper Mart, buying what they have there. With so many things to consider along with some potentially confusing terminology being used, it's extremely easy to be overwhelmed as to what you should do when first buying a telescope. Well have no fear, your favorite dynamic duo will be hosting a Hangout On Air to help answer any questions and give some helpful tips, tricks and teasers into the best way to get started in observing the Universe! As a special treat, +Gary Gonnella, +Stuart Forman and +Peter Lake will also be joining the hangout to share their experience in getting into the amazing world of citizen astronomy and astrophotography. These three are powerhouses when it comes to observing from home, on the road or even remotely, and they will undoubtedly be able to bring a lot of information to the show!So how do ask your questions? You can always leave your questions and comments here in the Event page, as well as on YouTube when the show goes live. Also, the Q&A app will be in use while live, so you can interact directly with the crew! (Just like downtown)Beginner's guide to buying a telescope2013-12-19 03:00:00182G+

EyeWire256,783What's it like to build a game to map the brain at MIT? Did you know that it takes the best neuroscience labs in the world over 50 hours to reconstruct one neuron? One cell! There are over 84 billion in just one human brain. In order to exponentially advance neuroscientific progress, +Sebastian Seung 's Computational Neuroscience Lab at MIT has built +EyeWire , a game to map the brain. Anyone can play --- and you need no scientific background. Over 70,000 players from 130+ countries already do. These gamers mapping the 3D structure of neurons and discover never before seen neural networks that are fundamentally changing our understanding of the science of vision. Over time, the collective actions of players will train advanced artificial intelligence to more rapidly reconstruct neural networks from image data, thus solving one of today's biggest bottlenecks in the field of neuroscience. Join +Amy Robinson and +William Silversmith , Creative Director and Head Developer, respectively, from EyeWire HQ for a Q&A including a progress report and previously unreleased stats! Google Science Fair1,982,304What does an Academy Award, Theoretical Physics, & Kings College have in common? The sum of these is the brilliant mind of Google[x] Engineer +Dan Piponi and the work that he's done. Not only does he get to work on cool projects in the Google[x] lab, he can also explain science in a way that’s accessible to all ages. Join Google Science Fair winner +Shree Bose as she moderates a hangout with Google’s Dan Piponi. He'll shows us how to find subatomic particles from the comfort of your own home. Most of us are familiar with pictures of subatomic particles interacting but seeing it in real life seems like a lofty goal. What most people don't realize is that you can get similar results at home by spending about $40 on materials that are pretty easy to find.     Bring your questions and curiosities to follow along with Dan, Shree and the other #deSTEMber participants Wednesday, December 19 at 10 AM PST / 12PM CST / 1 PM EST. Keep tuning into the 31 days of #deSTEMber with +Girlstart and +Google Science Fair for more at-home experiments and STEM activities.      For a full list of events, check out Girlstart’s calendar http://goo.gl/fP810deSTEMber Experiment: Inside the Mind of Google [x] Engineer Dan Piponi2012-12-19 19:00:00162G+

Mystery of how rocks move across Death Valley lake bed solved

The "sailing stones" of Death Valley, some weighing hundreds of pounds, have been a mystery since the 1940s.

From the study:

"We recorded the first direct scientific observation of rock movements using GPS-instrumented rocks and photography, in conjunction with a weather station and time-lapse cameras."

The entire study is worth a read. I never thought that diagrams about moving rocks could be so interesting: http://goo.gl/3WGbpQ

OK, internet friends. If Brad doesn't stick to his goal to make a video each week and work towards doing all the cool stuff he wants to do, start nagging him. ;)

I feel special now. :D Thanks, +Brad Leclerc! Let's keep up this positive feedback circle! Anyone else want me to nag them?

Well well well. It's official. I'm back to making videos on Youtube. +Liz Krane's crazy adventures finally pushed me over the edge of laziness and got me motivated enough to get this rolling.

More to come over the next few days. Much much more.

Next up, actual prep work, probably an intro or something, and working out a way to have decent lighting without my glasses becoming blindingly reflective!___OK, internet friends. Last night, I accidentally joined a hike that was so far beyond my skill level, it was downright dangerous. Then I got temporarily stranded. And I've never had so much fun!

Here are a few details not included in the video:

This was a 4+ mile hike through some of the steepest trails in Griffith Park. Lesson learned: don't do this in tennis shoes! Get hiking boots! I was slipping and sliding all over the place, climbing more than hiking.

I walked through poison oak, got splinters all over my hands and scratches all over my ankles, and my calf muscles gave out twice in the first hour. (But no real injuries. I was lucky!)

How did I end up on this hike? Well, I arrived late, ran to the bathroom, and found that they had just left without me. I ran to catch up and joined them without asking what difficulty level this was and just followed blindly along,... more »

How did I end up on this hike? Well, I arrived late, ran to the bathroom, and found that they had just left without me. I ran to catch up and joined them without asking what difficulty level this was and just followed blindly along, wondering "what in the world did I get myself into?" and "will I ever make it back down this mountain?" (Maybe a tad bit dramatic. I was fine.)

Then... Not only did my car battery die while parked in the lot for the 2-hour hike, but I had forgotten to bring my wallet!

One of the old dudes veteran hikers insisted on buying my new car battery (which was $150). More kindness than I deserve! I mean, c'mon. Do I really look like someone you'd trust to pay you back? ;)

(Just kidding, of course. I'm going to give him a check at the next hike.)

And yes, I drank beer with the hiking group in the parking lot while waiting for the Auto Club guy to arrive. Don't worry, I only had a literal sip! It was safe to drive home.

I never thought that nearly passing out on a hike and then waiting in a parking lot for an hour or two could be so much fun, but what an adventure!

Day 17 and 18 of my experiment to socialize every day of August
(and practice embarrassing myself through video blogs)

I've finally reached the point where my video blogging may interfere with my goal of making friends, so I'm going to make a small change to my strategy.

Also, this turn from making friends to making dates may throw a wrench in the works. But that's a topic for another day!

Day 16 of my experiment to meet new people every day of August

Woohoo! Last night's outing was a great one. Actually, I'm even thinking about hosting one of the next meetings... (Or why not think bigger? Maybe I'll start my own meetup group.)

Any other INTJs in the house? =P What do you all think of the Myers-Briggs personality test, by the way? (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-Briggs_Type_Indicator#Criticism for some issues)

PS: I want to do something different for tomorrow's video. Got any suggestions for video blog topics? I'm just past the halfway mark and I need to mix things up a bit. If the project isn't crazy enough, I'll get bored and give up on it, soooo... where can I find more crazy?

This will whet your appetite for +ScienceSunday. :D

All you need to measure the speed of light is a microwave, a ruler & a bar of chocolate!

In the video, hosts Ross Exton and Nerys Shah use little more than a microwave oven and a chocolate bar to show how to calculate the speed of light. The video doesn't make it perfectly clear how measuring the melted bits on a chocolate bar relates to the speed of light. But breaking it down a little more just requires taking a look at some of the units used in their measurements.

Hertz is the physics stand-in for “cycles per second.” The microwave used in the video produced light waves with a frequency of 2,450,000,000 Hertz, or that many cycles per second. Going from peak to peak in a wave—in this case the distance between the first and third melted bit of chocolate—is one cycle. Exton and Shah measured that distance as 0.12 meters, or 0.12 meters per cycle. Multiplying something measured in “meters per cycle” by something in “cycles per second” will give a measurement in “meters per second.” That's the wave's velocity—the speed of light.

The trick that makes the At Bristol team's approach work is that we in the modern era already know a few important things about light: that it has a finite speed, and that that speed is largely constant. We also have the benefit of physicists having already teased out the relationship between wave length, frequency and velocity.

When Ole Rømer looked to Jupiter and first deduced the speed of light he came up with 214,000,000 meters per second:
http://www.amnh.org/education/resources/rfl/web/essaybooks/cosmic/p_roemer.html

“This measurement, considering its antiquity, method of measurement, and 17th century uncertainty in exactly how far Jupiter was from the Earth, is surprisingly close to the modern value of [299 792 458] meters per second,” says Dave Kornreich for Cornell.

Using a microwave and a chocolate bar Exton and Shah got 294,000,000 meters per second—not bad for a little bit of kitchen science.

+Jason Mayes always shares the coolest stuff (if you're into science and tech and especially web development). Seriously, I could spend all day just perusing his G+ posts. Too much awesome stuff!

If you are new to #JavaScript  and want to write in an object orientated way, you will enjoy this video. How does JS cope with pointers to objects? How do you perform #inheritance ? How does the "this" reference work? What is the prototype? Even if you don't know what object orientated programming is, you should also watch this as it is great for beginners and explains many of the "gotchas" you will experience over your JS career  #OOP . Find even more videos at http://www.letscodejavascript.com/ and check out http://www.objectplayground.com/ to see how your objects are stored in JavaScript's memory.___+Jason Mayes always shares the coolest stuff (if you're into science and tech and especially web development). Day 14 of my experiment to meet new people every day and practice making videos (and practice embarrassing myself!)

So here's a scary thing I did a while ago: a 10-minute solo play. This is a good time to share it, I think. (My embarrassment quota for the day has now been reached! Woohoo!)

Oh yeah, and last night's social outing was a work-related event in which I mingled with lots of journalism students and faculty at USC Annenberg. Free food, too! It was pretty fun.

(I didn't have time to talk about that in today's video. I figured it should be focused on just one topic, anyhow. It's also a long enough video as is, with the whole 10-minute play included.)

Notes to answer some common questions I get about this:

- Yes, the cybersex I acted out really was that innocent and uneventful. (But still... remember, kids: don't do... more »

- On the medical issues: I still have some odd neurological symptoms now and then (like tingling in my hands, feet and part of my scalp), but after many blood tests and two MRIs, I still have a clean bill of health, and I haven't had a bad flare-up since then. (And I can play video games again now and work on the computer all day long!)

- I have no plans to do another play, but then again, who knows? Anything's possible.

DnDnG: 7 minute documentary showing that girls will play Dungeons & Dragons with boys

"Boys like Dungeons & Dragons. Girls don’t. Or, girls aren’t particularly interested in D&D, because they don’t even know what the game is. Because they’ve never played before."

via http://boingboing.net/2014/08/14/documentary-proves-girls-will.html

(Thanks +Derek Pennycuff for reminding me to share this on G+! Sometimes I put stuff on Twitter and then forget all about it.)

Johnny, Danny, Josh, and Jacob (ages 9 to 11) play Dungeons and Dragons every other weekend with a group of their friends. This group never includes girls their age. DnDnG explores the possibility that maybe, just maybe, their female friends could enjoy the game just as much as they do.

My daugher had no problems playing in the table top roleplaying game I ran for some local homeschooled kids. Although she was the only girl I could successfully recruit.

Day 13 of my experiment to go out and meet new people every day

Today's advice solicitation: what wakes you up in the morning?

When you're half asleep and you're just not ready to commit to full consciousness yet, what do you do to convince your brain to push forward? What gets you out of bed each morning?

As for hiking: the great thing about hiking groups is I'm always too out of breath to worry about making conversation the whole time. ;) But I did end up having an interesting conversation with a new person this time!

Day 12 of my August experiment to make new friends every day
(and to practice making videos and embarrassing myself)

Last night was the hardest social outing so far, but I stuck it out, and I'm still glad I went. As for my video blog... well, it's long and boring, but here it is! I did it anyway!

That seems to be the main lesson I'm learning from this crazy project: just do it anyway. So far, I've been glad I did every single time.

I'm almost at the halfway mark now, and I'm not sure I have any new friends yet, but at least I've already experienced more new things and met more new people than I have in... well, probably in the last two years combined!

How a Web Design Goes Straight to Hell
http://theoatmeal.com/comics/design_hell

Working on redesigning a website for work, and hoping this doesn't happen in the near future. Any advice?

By the way, this is where I work:
http://communicationleadership.usc.edu/
(And also http://sunnylands.org/ but I'm not redoing their site)

Here are the things I need to figure out:

1) Come up with a new design
2) Create a custom WordPress theme
3) Make the switch from Movable Type to WordPress
4) Move the site to a new web host, but keep the old URL
5) Redirect old pages to new pages (accounting for new URL structure)

I can figure this out, right? =P But if you've been through any of this before and have some quick tips or any useful links to share... yes, please! :)

Day 11 of my experiment to go out and try to make new friends every day for a month

This was the best day yet!! Climbing up the biggest staircase I've ever seen with a group of fun, nice people who are all trying to get out of their comfort zones and make new friends, just like me!

I can't wait to go to their next meetup. In fact, I may even host an event of my own (another thing I've never done before)!

But now that I'm closer to turning acquaintances into friends, I'm anticipating a couple of obstacles:

1) I can't remember their names
2) I can't recognize most of their faces
3) I can't remember much of what anybody told me about themselves

Wahh. :( Of course, this only goes back to 2011, so it's not exactly a complete picture. But yeah, we could use some more rain here in California.

Sometimes, it feels good to just let yourself be sad. But I also enjoy working through it by challenging my muscle memory. :)

If the song is difficult enough (and fast enough), it's virtually impossible to think about sad things while practicing it.

Next, I just need to get reacquainted with all the other things that used to engage my brain so thoroughly -- and find more people with whom I can share it all!

It's day 10 of my experiment to meet new people every day (and practice making videos), and so far so good. :) I feel much less sad this evening, and more or less ready to tackle week two.

I hope you've all had a great weekend!!

Loving the printable chiplets and bendable acoustics! +Mark Bruce reminds us every Sunday what the rest of the world is accomplishing while I eat ice cream and watch cartoons. ;)

Happy Sunday. Better yet, happy #ScienceSunday !!

(PS: I so miss writing my own Science Sunday posts. I hope I can get back into it soon. In the meantime, I will at least be reading many of them today!)

SciTech #ScienceSunday Digest, 32/14.
Brain imaging & augmentation, IBM brain chips, sound from surface vibration, batteryless WiFi communications, magnetic microfluidics, perovskite LEDs, treating neurodegeneration, printable chiplets, miniature NMR.

1. New Brain Imaging and Augmentation Studies.
Many thanks to +Mani Saint-Victor for directing me to this article discussing the repair and augmentation of inter-laminar microcircuits across the neocortex, and specifically the use of technologies for the recording and microstimulation of cortical microcircuits to build neuroprostheses for such repair or augmentation of cognitive function http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3832795/. Of course, such general approaches may benefit significantly from improved brain imaging techniques, such as this new non-invasive method involving IR lasers shone into the brain from outside the skull to stimulate modified carbon nanotubes injected into the animal’s blood in order to gain an unprecedented look at blood flow in the brain http://news.stanford.edu/news/2014/august/skull-blood-flow-080614.html. And such a specific approach may benefit significantly from the new ability to synthesise uniform and structurally pure carbon nanotubes using defined molecular seeds for example http://www.empa.ch/plugin/template/empa/3/149811/---/l=2.

2. IBM’s Neurosynaptic Brain Chips take Next Step.
IBM announced the latest incarnation and demonstration of its neurosynaptic SyNapse chip with nearly five billion transistors powering one million “neurons” and 256 million synapses http://www.technologyreview.com/news/529691/ibm-chip-processes-data-similar-to-the-way-your-brain-does/. As an example demonstration a chip was tasked with recognising cars, people, and bicycles in video of an intersection; it did so 100 times faster and consumed 100,000 times less power than a laptop computer programed to do the same. The architecture is inspired by the structure of mammalian brains and artificial neurons communicate via “spikes” in a similar fashion. The chips themselves are scalable and the team wishes to connect thousands together into a novel supercomputer, although programming the chips remains a problem that they continue to work on. In related news IBM is trying to gear up its Watson supercomputer to assist with business meetings and executive decision making http://www.technologyreview.com/news/529606/a-room-where-executives-go-to-get-help-from-ibms-watson/.

3. Video Image Processing of Surfaces Can Extract Ambient Sounds.
In one of the more unexpected announcements for the week a new algorithm was demonstrated that is able to reconstruct an audio signal by analysing minute vibrations on the surfaces of objects captured in video footage http://newsoffice.mit.edu/2014/algorithm-recovers-speech-from-vibrations-0804. Captured sounds included intelligible speech from a distance of 15 feet through soundproof glass. Video framerate is key however, and needs to be higher than the frequency of the audio signal; many tests used a high-speed camera (2k - 6k fps) but other tests succeeded with a standard 60 fps digital camera due to how image data is captured by these sensors. The work builds on techniques for measuring a person’s heart rate via video feed for example.

4. Batteryless Sensors Communicate Via WiFi Backscatter.
Building on earlier work in which batteryless devices communicated with each other by harvesting ambient radio, TV, and wireless comms, the same group has now demonstrated a method of very-low-power WiFi-backscatter communications for such devices - powered just by ambient radio, TV, and WiFi - to connect to the Internet via WiFi http://www.washington.edu/news/2014/08/04/no-power-wi-fi-connectivity-could-fuel-internet-of-things-reality/. The ambient backscatter method works by the devices simply reflecting or not reflecting WiFi signals from a WiFi access point, which is detected by a reader device (e.g. phone) as discrete changes in signal strength. While proof-of-concept data rates were only 1 kilobit per second this could be a key enabling technology for aspects of the Internet of Things. WiFi is also being used to see through walls again http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/7/5979723/x-ray-vision-using-wi-fi-on-robots.

5. Active Magnetic Microfluidic Chips.
A surface patterned with micro-scale ridges and impregnated with a ferrofluid (oil loaded with nanometer-scale magnetic particles) spontaneously forms a ferrofluid cloak around droplets of water or other particles added to the surface. Once formed such droplets can be precisely controlled and manipulated by an external magnetic field http://newsoffice.mit.edu/2014/surfaces-can-control-how-fluids-particles-move-0801. A nice piece of fluid dynamics but applications might include for example microfluidic chips that lack defined channels, but rather droplets can be moved around “virtual channels” at will and reacted together in whatever combination is needed.

6. Perovskite Now for Light Emission as well as Absorption.
Perovskite is becoming a hot item in materials research focused on developing better solar cells. It turns out that the same properties that lend perovskites their excellent light absorption properties can also be exploited for excellent light emission applications, as recently demonstrated in perovskite LEDs http://phys.org/news/2014-08-material-perovskite.html. Added benefits include cheap, simple, and scalable manufacture, and straight-forward tuning to emit light in a wide range of colours. Related news in solar cell applications include flexible perovskite (textile) fibers able to harvest light http://phys.org/news/2014-08-inexpensive-flexible-fiber-perovskite-solar.html, and a new solar cell stacking technique aiming to create cells with 50% energy efficiency http://www.technologyreview.com/news/529651/stacking-cells-could-make-solar-as-cheap-as-natural-gas/.

7. Combating Neurodegeneration.
We had quite a few advances against neurodegeneration this week. First, neurons created from reprogrammed skin cells demonstrated complete and functional integration with mice brains http://www.alphagalileo.org/ViewItem.aspx?ItemId=144227&CultureCode=en. Second, a new test for neurodegeneration based on visual processing abilities http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-08/cp-dii073014.php. Third, investigations into how disruptions of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the brain can contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s and how we should try to restore this flow https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2014/08/considering-cerebrospinal-fluid-flow-disruption-as-a-contributing-cause-of-alzheimers-disease.php. Fourth, a newly designed peptide blocks the formation of, and helps to clear, misfolded proteins that contribute to amyloid buildup in Alzheimer’s and other diseases http://www.washington.edu/news/2014/07/28/new-protein-structure-could-help-treat-alzheimers-related-diseases/. Fifth, the successful demonstration of a new drug in reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s in mice http://news.yale.edu/2014/08/06/search-alzheimer-s-drug-major-step-forward.

8. Printable Chiplets Still Being Developed.
A PARC group chops silicon wafers into 200 x 300 micrometer chiplets and mixes these into an ink, within which individual chiplets can be electrostatically guided to precise spots and subsequently picked and printed and connected with printed electronic inks http://www.technologyreview.com/photoessay/529761/micro-chiplets/. This builds on initial work the group announced last year, extending the vision to enable the fabrication of new computing devices made up of arrays of chiplets that individually might comprise processing, memory, LED, MEMS, and other functions - all printed as needed to create custom devices. After demonstrating the placement and wiring of four chiplets, and ultimately wanting to do the same with billions at a time, the group still has a way to go.

9. NMR Chip Measuring Just 2mm.
A new nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy chip has been fabricated to a size measuring 2mm by 2mm, and is the smallest NMR system ever built http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/biomedical/devices/an-nmr-device-the-size-of-a-seed. NMR applications are extensive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_magnetic_resonance#Applications) but having such a cheap and miniaturised chip could open the door to a range of mobile and consumer applications such as diagnostic testing and environmental monitoring to name just two. While the prototype still needs a fist-sized permanent magnet to take readings, the miniaturisation advance was made possible with computational compensation of temperature fluctuations that can alter the fields of small magnets.

10. Bendable Acoustics and Sound Traps.
New acoustic engineering methods allow soundwaves to bend around objects and interfere to form acoustic bottles and traps in air http://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/computing/hardware/bendable-sound-waves-can-skirt-objects-trap-particles. The method involves precisely adjusting the phase and amplitude of dozens of closely-spaced speakers; a linear array of 40 speakers allows shaping of sound in two dimensions, while a two-dimensional array of 100 speakers allows shaping of sound in three dimensions. As part of the demonstration a 3D acoustic bottle or trap was able to grab and move a hard plastic ball. Other applications could include improvements to ultrasound imaging by being able to bend around bones to view soft tissues, and smaller acoustic tweezers to manipulate cells and other small objects.

After putting it off for a while, I restarted teaching myself the piano this year, with two songs that are far beyond my skill level. The more difficult, the more fun they are to learn!

Today I thought I'd share one of my daily practice sessions with you all! (It's at the end. The first part of this video blog is just me rambling about how my crazy piano experiment -- yes, another crazy little experiment -- has really helped me through depression, anxiety and grief.)

I said the act of practicing is a form of meditation for me, and now that I think about it more, it's a bit like biofeedback therapy! Except instead of looking at a graph of my skin conductance level, I'm getting auditory feedback that correlates with my mood.

What are your meditative hobbies? Anything you think I should try next? :)

Day 8: Done with the first week of my experiment to meet new people every day!

What's something you've been putting off, and why haven't you done it yet?

My usual excuse is that I don't think I could live through the fear and embarrassment. I might throw up on everybody. I might faint. People will judge me and it'll hurt so much emotionally that it'll also hurt physically. (And then I'll die miserable and alone.)

But I've been scared and embarrassed and judged every single day this past week, and I'm still alive! Nothing bad has happened. And it's getting easier. :)

But my feet do hurt tonight, lol. I'm going to go pass out now. Goodnight, friends!

Day 7 of my go-out-and-be-social-every-day experiment

I know a lot of you have been to a hackerspace before (I know you have, +Ben Hibben!) but this was my first time seeing one in person. I can definitely see myself coming back here on a regular basis. :)

BTW, if anyone has ideas for specific places or events to go to -- or topics for video blogs -- I'm all ears!

It's starting to get harder to think of things now, probably because the work week is tiring me out. I look forward to having time to curl up with a good book this weekend!

Day 5 of my experiment to socialize with new people every day

Soooo tired... blehhhh. But last night I at least met some new people and did something I never would've done otherwise!

But it's much harder to find social gatherings during the week -- at least finding ones I can get to after work during rush hour traffic, lol. After a full work day, I'm finding it difficult to make time to go out and practice making videos and take care of my day-to-day chores. Got any tips?

"The average male scientist authors 45 percent more papers than the average female scientist"

An interesting analysis of 938,301 scientific papers from arxiv.org, by Emma Pierson: http://goo.gl/mweWgs

"When a female scientist writes a paper, she is more likely to be first author ["indicating the scientist primarily responsible for the paper"] than the average author on that paper. But she is less likely to be last author ["indicating the senior scientist who supervised the work"], writes far fewer papers and is especially unlikely to publish papers on her own. Because she writes fewer papers, she ends up more isolated in the network of scientists, with additional consequences for her career."

But the good news is women do seem to be gaining ground in academic publishing, and here's an interesting point I hadn't thought... more »

Do you think it's better to force kids to learn something they don't enjoy, or better to let them decide for themselves? Yesterday I interviewed my dad about why he let me give up on my piano (and other) lessons, and he shared some of his parenting philosophy.

I think it worked out fine for me. Rekindling my love for the piano after quitting my lessons helped me discover a whole new appreciation for self-directed learning. But maybe that would've happened even if my dad made me continue taking piano lessons, and the only difference would be that I would've become an amazing concert pianist! Ehh... Doubtful. =P

This is so cool I wish I could take a 3-hour lunch break to really understand how it works!___

"You couldn’t take the pictures yourself standing a few hundred meters from the pad, as the shock wave of the firing rockets would kill you."

How rocket launch photos are taken from up close
Did you wonder how rocket launch photos like this are taken from so close? The answer is at the bottom of the image.

You couldn’t take the pictures yourself standing a few hundred meters from the pad, as the shock wave of the firing rockets would kill you. Instead, before the launch, selected photographers and media people are allowed to set up their cameras not far from the pad. You can see the cameras on tripods at the bottom of the photo.

The cameras’ shutter releases are operated automatically, typically by sound-activated sensors. The bags hanging from the tripods contain ballast, probably sand or dirt, to keep the cameras steady in the intense shock wave. Other ballast bags are at the feet of the tripod legs.

Day 3 of my socialize-every-day experiment

I got tickled by a metallic clown, I salsa danced with two new acquaintances, and I had fun filming the sights and sounds of Santa Monica's iconic Third Street Promenade!

I love how this experiment is motivating me to practice two skills at the same time, each one reinforcing the other: doing social things and relearning how to make videos. :)

Day 2 of my challenge to practice making friends and videos

I never thought I'd actually share my video from day 1 (http://goo.gl/sMVcbS)! When I pressed that share button, I instantly regretted it. But then you all made me so glad I did it. :)

I've already done so much more than I would have otherwise! So far:

- I went out to explore Griffith Observatory with a new friend

- I'm already relearning how to be myself while talking to an inanimate
object (a necessary skill for video-making)

- I'm learning how to use Adobe Premiere

- I woke up feeling motivated to work on something of my own early in the morning before heading off to my 9-5 office job

- I was happy to work on something in the evening instead of watching TV, and I didn't even feel like I was missing out on anything

- I felt... more »

- I felt absolutely terrified and sick to my stomach, but I did it anyway

- And a bonus that I wasn't even planning on: I saw Saturn for the first time!

How's that for fighting depression/anxiety/grief? I don't know how long this momentum will keep up, of course. Inevitably I will have another bad day and will likely fail at some point, but I look forward to finding out how far I can get. :)

If anyone has gotten this far, my question for you is: what's something you've made yourself do that you were absolutely terrified of, and how did it turn out?___

Star-gazing under the Hollywood sign at Griffith Observatory

Last night I saw Saturn with my own eyes for the very first time! It looked... fake. lol. But seeing it for myself was incredible.

Sometimes I forget there's stuff out there. Then when I remember, and when I see it, my own little problems seem, well, astronomically smaller in comparison.

I thought I'd try an experiment. This is my first video blog thing. It's just me blurting out my emotions, but I wanted to see what would happen...

You see, I want to get back to this old project of mine: So I'm Gonna Learn Everything (LearningNerd.com Intro) .... but it's been a while, and the more time that passes by, the harder it is to start. And as I discuss in the video, I have some emotional stuff that keeps getting in the way. (Warning: there is some crying.)

I figured that forcing myself to do something very, very uncomfortable and making it public might help spur me on to keep working towards my goals. Keep me accountable, guys! :)

Here are my two main goals right now:

2) Make friends

My challenges for this month: go do something social every single day and practice making more videos (even if they're just rambling vlogs that nobody should ever watch).

Tonight I went to the Griffith Observatory with a new friend (and had fun!), so... Day 1 complete, and 30 more to go!

And now I'm going to go pass out in a moment, but I'll be back here in the morning, assuming I survive the embarrassment and discomfort of getting out of my comfort zone. =P___
