Drink and Click™ Seattle, Washington116Our next Drink and Click event is happening in the fun & funky Ballard neighbourhood of Seattle. Tons and tons of bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and street photography await us as we meander around drinking and clicking. You don't have to drink alcohol either. Many of our members do not drink and they still come over for a good talk and networking. The first place we’ll all meet at is set in an old library. It’s Seattle’s only pub dedicated to all things Australian & New Zealander, the Kangaroo and Kiwi. It’s a great spot with lots of open space for us to hang out, shoot, and grab a few drinks. After we’re done here, we’ll wander around Market St and Leary Way wherever we may feel like heading to. The locks are nearby too, potentially a fun spot to catch the sun setting towards the end of the event.March Monthly Challenge! As usual, there's a monthly challenge with the event and this months' theme is Shallow Depth of Field, with awesome prizes from +Gary Fong Flash Diffusers, +c't Digital Photography, and +Trey Ratcliff. More info for the challenge can be found here: https://plus.google.com/events/cqhl3cme6cdparii4m541n63drgHope to see you! Cheers!+Jacob Lucas.Seattle Drink and Click - Ballard2014-03-23 16:00:0030
Drink and Click™ Seattle, Washington116The First Seattle +Drink and Click™ is happening! When: Saturday February 15th 2014, starting at 3pm. Rain or Shine.Where: Capitol Hill, just east of downtown Seattle. We'll meet at the Elysian Brewery and Pub at 13th & Pike. This should be a lot of fun - Capitol Hill is an always fun and vibrant neighbourhood to photograph... definitely something for everyone here. The plan will be to meet at the Elysian, get to know everyone while people arrive, and then wander west along Pike St until we get to Broadway. From there we can head north along Broadway up into Capitol Hill. There is a ton to shoot at the pubs and bars on the hill and along the streets as well. A lot of these pubs can be dimly lit - pack in that fast 50 for some fun low light shots.February ChallengeEach month there is a chapter wide challenge with some great prizes up for grabs. The theme changes each month, and this month the theme is "Rule of Thirds". https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c3fa0q2l3thvf3oo4gpnjluncu4Looking forward to seeing everyone there!Cheers,+Jacob Lucas.Seattle's First Drink and Click - Capitol Hill2014-02-15 15:00:0021

Brian Matiash1,437,935I recently announced that my brand new +SmugMug portfolio site went live (http://portfolio.brianmatiash.com) and that prints are now available for sale! We had so much fun with the announce that I wanted to continue the good times today. With Valentine's Day in full swing, what better way is there to show yourself how much you love YOU than by winning a 1 YEAR Membership with SmugMug? :)Before we get to the contest details, I want to share a crazy deal that any new customer can take advantage of - SmugMug has been extremely generous and is letting me offer a 25% discount off of any of their four tiered membership packages. To get in on this deal, just use the coupon code BMASH when you set up your new account. That is a ridiculously good deal and like all good deals, it expires on Feb 23, 2013 at the stroke of 11:59PM Pacific/US.Now onto the contest details - which are very straightforward. I want to you to share your one, single image that you think would benefit most from having its own SmugMug Gallery. Just share your image right here in this event and tag it with #SmugMash . Now, creativity and strength of vision count here! If you want to share a little ditty about what makes this image so important to you and why you'd want to share it on your own SmugMug gallery, be sure to include that. The contest will run for one week, ending next Thursday, February 21st at 11:59AM Pacific/US time. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. The first place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug Business membership. The second place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug Portfolio membership. Finally, the third place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug Power membership. If you're already an existing SmugMug member (good for you!) and you win, you will be upgraded to the respective tier that you placed in or if you placed in the tier that you are currently a member of, SmugMug will extend your account by 1 year. Please tag your comments and/or posts with #SmugMash  to make aggregating the entries easier! So who will be judging this contest? Aside from me, I am so excited to have three amazing SmugMug friends helping out. First, we have the go-to person for all of SmugMug's friends, the lovely and insanely sweet +Katherine Cheng. Next up is SmugMug's social butterfly, loyal father of Rocky the Dog, and the harvester of  #Bonocorns far and wide, +Michael Bonocore. Finally, the co-founder of SmugMug, crazy lover of hanging gigantic prints ofWin some LOVE! Well… some SmugMug LOVE!2013-02-15 00:00:00131
Seattle Photowalk617The Plan: We will meet at 2pm at the totem pole and assemble for a group photo. For those coming in from other states or those who haven't visited the area, the totem pole is in a courtyard at the corner of 1st Ave and Yesler Way. There is street parking and pay parking lots very close by.After that, roam in packs or individually and capture the ambiance, the tourists, the locals, the exposed brick and Victorian Romanesque architecture, and the unique flavor of this location. There is no set route, but we intend to slowly make our way down towards the waterfront and grab dinner and drinks at approx. 5pm. After dinner the die hards are welcome to stick around for some sunset shooting along the Seattle Waterfront. For more information on Seattle photowalks or photowalks in general, check out the profile for +Seattle Photowalk. Be sure to add +Seattle Photowalk to your circles to stay informed about upcoming walks.Remember, all posts related to this (and other) Seattle photowalks will be tagged with #seattlephotowalk .Hope to see you there!Seattle Photowalk - Pioneer Square Edition2012-08-25 14:00:0024

Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/2)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca  #sharedcircles #circles #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:30:374321234795

Mountain Summer Storm
North Cascades, Washington State

On a recent trip up to Mt. Baker, I was fortunate enough to catch Mt. Shuksan and Picture Lake at sunset just as a big Summer storm was blowing in. The entire scene was so dynamic and filled with such rich, deep color that I could hardly believe my eyes.

The Little Things
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Sometimes, even when surrounded by the grand vistas of the Columbia River Gorge, it pays to stop and appreciate the little things. Here a clump of Licorice Ferns grows out of the moss of the side of the tree in the Autumn damp--with a blanket of fall color in the background.

For day five of the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge  / #5dayblackandwhitechallenge , I'm posting a shot of a somewhat iconic landmark in my beautiful city. This is the view of the Space Needle from Kerry Park, just a bit northwest of downtown Seattle.

Thanks +Wendy Chase for the nomination, it's been a fun five days. For my final nomination, I'm nominating fellow Pacific Northwestener, +Peter West Carey. The rules (if you accept) are to post a black and white image (new or old) every day for 5 straight days, tag me, and nominate someone new to play along.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain

For Halloween and day three of the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge  / #5dayblackandwhitechallenge , I thought I'd post a shot I've posted on Halloween before, of a raven that haunted me on a solitary trip to Canyonlands National Park a few years ago. Thanks to +Wendy Chase for the nomination.

We arrive at day two of the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge  / #5dayblackandwhitechallenge , after being tagged by +Wendy Chase. Day One. I always seem to be late to the party, but the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge  / #5dayblackandwhitechallenge  has finally made its way to me courtesy of +Wendy Chase. I love color and don't choose to do much black and white, so this is definitely a challenge for me. Thank you Wendy!

The Night Has a Thousand Eyes

The night has a thousand eyes,
  And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
  With the dying sun.

The mind has a thousand eyes,
  And the heart but one;
Yet the light of a whole life dies
  When love is done.

This is a shot of the Milky Way taken up near Mt. Baker and North Cascades National Park during our last new moon. My daughters had been wanting to "really see the stars", and when the new moon coincided with some totally clear skies, we jumped into the car and headed into the mountains so they could see some. And they did.

The Night Has a Thousand Eyes

The night has a thousand eyes,
  And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
  With the dying sun.

The mind has a thousand eyes,
  And the heart but one;
Yet the light of a whole life dies
  When love is done.

Moonlight Vista -- Part Deux
Vista House, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Autumn is my absolute favorite time of year for photography. Color abounds. Each year I plan a few photography trips for this time, and the past few years I've scheduled extended trips down to the Columbia River Gorge--a photographic feast anytime of year, but especially in autumn and spring.

Here's a shot from last year's trip down there with +Jacob Lucas. This is the Vista House illuminated solely by moonlight. While the moon was plenty bright to light up this gorgeous building, it's dim enough to allow the exposure time to be long enough to bring out the stars in the background. While I was shooting this, Jacob was on the opposite side doing some light painting which turned out great as well : https://plus.google.com/111204757488124368395/posts/ZwV1yMwWAHi

San Juan Sunset
Washington Park, Anacortes, Washington

My family has an annual tradition of going camping with the same large group of friends somewhere new in Washington state. (One of a several summer traditions we have that revolve around camping!) This year we camped at Washington Park up in Anacortes, Washington--somewhere I've never been before. It is absolutely gorgeous and is very worthy of a visit--even if only for a day trip. The views of Puget Sound the San Juans can't be beat.

This last Saturday night, I managed to sneak out with my camera to shoot sunset. Here's a shot from near our campsite, just after sunset, looking west across Rosario Strait at the San Juan Islands.

I've seen a lot of shots of Antelope Canyon, but I haven't seen one quite like this one from +Brian Matiash. Love the perspective, use of fisheye, and the processing to handle the color and dynamic range. Please leave any comments on Brian's post!

Eagle Eye Rock

I cannot wait to get a crack at photographing Lower Antelope Canyon again. When I last visited with +Chris Lazzery and +Moe Chen, we were really limited in time due to the area closing for the day. There is a dizzying amount of ways you can photograph this narrow slot canyon and I truly feel that it's one of the best places in the world to refine how you see. If you haven't visited here, you owe it to yourself to carve it into your plans.

I took this photo with my +Sony A7 and Canon 15mm Funkbuster Fisheye lens. I recently gave my precious fisheye to +Nicole S. Young and replaced it with Sony's 16mm fisheye, dubbed Funkbuster: TNG. I haven't had much of a chance to use it yet but the few photos that it has produced are really awesome. On this trip, I brought my ultra-light +Really Right Stuff TQC-14/BH-30 tripod. I had the legs splayed out way wide to get low for this view. With regards to stylization, I was initially hesitant to edit this photo using Analog Efex Pro 2 (+Nik Collection by Google) because I wasn't sure how some of the filters would work against the scene. I did end up finding a particular combination of filters that worked nicely but ended up masking back in the original sky.___I've seen a lot of shots of Antelope Canyon, but I haven't seen one quite like this one from +Brian Matiash. Devils Tower and the Moon
Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming, USA

Here's a shot of Devils Tower as the nearly full moon is rising above it, just a bit after sunset. This is from an incredible road trip to South Dakota to visit the Black Hills and Badlands National Park--and on the way there how could I not stop and visit the famous Devils Tower in Wyoming? I had pretty lofty expectations about how interesting and awe-inspiring I expected this place to be and it lived up to all of them. Well worth the detour.

Shot Details:

It's a small world. Last weekend, while climbing Mt. Ellinor (just outside Olympic National Park), I ran into a father and son on the way up and spent and had a good time chatting with them there and the top. I later discovered that the father was a friend on mine from Flickr and that his son shot and posted a photo of me doing my thing at the summit. Here's a link to that shot--directly below me is Lake Cushman and beyond that is Hood Canal and Puget Sound.

Here's a little bit different of a view of these beautiful falls in Olympic National Park. Getting here just requires going off trail a little bit and standing on a mossy basalt cliff edge with a little bit of a 100 foot drop to the Sol Duc River, but it's not so bad.  ;)

See this image LARGE on my blog!

This past weekend my good mate +Sam Breach was in town, so I dragged her out to the University of Washington for a sunrise shoot. I had seen a lot of news that the Cherry Blossom trees on campus were in full bloom, and it seems they were right!

We got there about 30 minutes before sunrise to find a quiet and almost empty quad. It was a very tranquil and quiet shoot. Definitely pays to wake early sometimes :)

And Then This Bird Walked into My Shot...
Bay of Banderas, Mexico

This is a shot from a recent family vacation to Punta de Mita, Mexico--near Puerto Vallarta. This is looking west, out of the Bay of Banderas and toward the open Pacific.  While most of the sunsets were clear, this one had quite a few clouds setting up on the western horizon so I went out with the camera hoping for something good... and wasn't disappointed!  After I found these cool rocks to use as a foreground, this bird flew in and decided to start frolicking in the surf right in front of me. Sometimes I get lucky. ;)

Shot handheld with the Fujifilm X100s. (RAW, ISO 1600, 1/18s, f/8).

Should be great, looking forward to this--going to put the X100S through its paces.

Our next Drink and Click event is happening in the fun & funky Ballard neighbourhood of Seattle.

The locks are nearby too, potentially a fun spot to catch the sun setting towards the end of the event.

March Monthly Challenge!
As usual, there's a monthly challenge with the event and this months' theme is Shallow Depth of Field, with awesome prizes from +Gary Fong Flash Diffusers, +c't Digital Photography, and +Trey Ratcliff. More info for the challenge can be found here: https://plus.google.com/events/cqhl3cme6cdparii4m541n63drg

Hope to see you! Cheers!

Absolutely gorgeous shot by +Peter West Carey of my favorite city, during an early morning outing that he somehow convinced me to join him on.

Panorama: Before Sunrise In Seattle, Washington, USA

Summer mornings are near perfection in Seattle. We don’t get warmth all year round so when Summer finally begins (some time around the end of July, usually) and the days are long, getting up early for photography is easy.

My friend +Michael Riffle and I were up extra early, well before coffee stands were open (which is saying something in this coffee-Mecca town) and that allowed for extra time to set up and capture morning’s colors before the sun touched Mt. Rainier in the distance.

This view captures a lot of Seattle’s icons, form the obvious Space Needle and Mt. Rainier to the newer Great Wheel on the waterfront and the two sports stadiums in the far distance (while admitting I still miss the Kingdome sometimes….in the winter).

A Touch of Fall
Glacier National Park, Montana

Got up about three hours before dawn to make the loooong drive from Kalispell, Montana to the Wild Goose Island Overlook in Glacier National Park a few weeks ago. (Note to self: Stay closer to where you want to shoot at dawn..) Early morning tends to be the most interesting time to drive through National Parks, especially in terms of seeing wildlife. On this particular morning, I saw a huge grizzly bear sauntering up the road, trailed by a group of bicyclists trying who were too afraid to pass it by.  ;)

Ponytail Falls
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon

Here's a shot of Ponytail Falls, taken in the Columbia River Gorge during a cold, extremely rainy weekend earlier in the year. For some reason, I hadn't processed this photo until this week, but I've been going back and revisiting my shots from that trip in anticipation of heading back down there for some fall colors next month. I can't wait to get back out there, knee-deep in some more frigid streams.

Shot Details: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, +Really Right Stuff TVC-23 and BH-55, B+W Circular Polarizer, RAW, ISO 100, 16 mm, f/11, 0.5 sec.

Changing Conditions
North Cascades, Washington State

Took a trip up to Mt. Baker a month ago and spent the day enduring hordes of mosquitos and flies while hiking about shooting the scenery. This particular day had some stormy, unstable air, and the view of Mt. Shuksan (pictured here) was constantly changing. One minute it was clear as a bell, a few later it was completely hidden from view, and for a few fleeting minutes in between it was half covered with beautiful wispy clouds.

Shot Details: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, +Really Right Stuff TVC-23 and BH-55, +f-stop Guru bag, B+W Circular Polarizer, RAW, ISO 100, 40 mm, f/11, 1/25 sec.

Awwwwwwwww.....
Baby Mountain Goat at Glacier National Park

Came across quite a few pairs of mamma and baby mountain goats while on a hike in Glacier National Park this past week. This was one of the youngest babies who was gracious enough to pose nicely for my camera.

Shot Details: Canon PowerShot S100, 26mm, 1/125s, f/5.9, ISO 80, RAW.

Salt Creek Sunset
Olympic Peninsula, Washington State

Here's a shot from this summer of a beautiful sunset reflected in the mouth of Salt Creek as it empties into the Strait of Juan de Fuca on the north Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I grew up about 10 minutes from here, and one of the things I love about going back home is that I can quickly run down to some of the most beautiful beaches in the state to see what kind of sunrise or sunset will unfold. On this day, I was treated to a pretty spectacular one, indeed.

Kelp and the Lighthouse
Cape Disappointment State Park, Washington State

From a recent camping trip to Cape Disappointment State Park on the Washington coast, near the Columbia River. This is a pretty incredible park--two lighthouses you can hike to, seemingly miles of wonderful sandy beaches, a Lewis and Clark exhibit, and lots of scenic views. This is a shot at sunset of the North Head Lighthouse from a beach that was very near to our campsite.

Solitude

When looking for some quotes about solitude, came across this gem: "He who delights in solitude is either a wild beast or a god." (Sir Francis Bacon) This is a self portrait, taken a couple of weeks ago at Cape Disappointment, on the Washington coast near the Columbia River.

Incredible shot of a Seattle sunrise by my pal +Jacob Lucas. I hope to see a scene like this myself this fall!

Sunrise in the Autumn...
Kerry Park, Seattle, WA

The weather in Seattle has taken a chilly turn, and it's making think of Autumn with all kinds of excitement. One fun thing to look forward to is the gorgeous sunrises that we are privy to, such as this one from back in 2012.

Mt. Rainier is back there somewhere behind all that low cloud... just to the right of the Space Needle :)
