The simple trick for overcoming AirBnB’s biggest flaw

When people go on vacation, they might specifically know where they’d like to go. “Let’s go to Italy!”

As a nomad, I’m less particular about where, exactly, because I intend to live everywhere eventually. The real question is: when?

Living nomadically affords the delicious luxury of opportunism. Rather than going to that one-and-only place, maybe I’ll look for extreme deals. Maybe I want to live in a treehouse. Maybe I want to live in an ancient farmhouse.

Unfortunately, AirBnB blocks you from easily finding the location of your dreams.

Google's got an incubator. Should you have one, too?

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/52p544 )

Google is creating its own private Silicon Valley. More specifically, according to an exclusive on The Information, Google is building an incubator for its employees.

The organization is called "Area 120," and it's run out of a San Francisco Google office by Don Harrison, Google's vice president of corporate development, and Bradley Horowitz, vice president of streams, photos and sharing.

As far as I can tell, the Area 120 initiative is a big improvement on the "20 percent time" policy of yesteryear, which encouraged Google employees to spend 20 percent of their time working on pet projects. Occasionally, those projects resulted in big hits like Gmail and AdSense.

As far as I can tell, the Area 120 initiative is a big improvement on the "20 percent time" policy of yesteryear, which encouraged Google employees to spend 20 percent of their time working on pet projects. Occasionally, those projects resulted in big hits like Gmail and AdSense.

Employees with a startup idea need to pitch it—with a business plan—to the Area 120 honchos. If the pitch is accepted, the employees will be allowed to drop what they had been working on and devote all their time to the startup project for a few months.

Such accelerators are created as an alternative to innovative and creative employees leaving the company, launching startups externally or, in a worst-case scenario, taking business away from the company they left.

In other words, it's a practical solution to the real problem of employees who leave in order to do startups. By enabling employees to launch startups without leaving, the thinking goes, the company keeps the employee as well as the startup.

How is YOUR company keeping its best employees?

Another win for Google Photos: Auto-backup uploads smartphone theft suspect selfies

Excuse me: "persons of interest."

A woman named Desiree Hernandez was walking down the street in Los Angeles, when a car drove by, someone reached out the window and grabbed her purse, which contained all the stuff one would normally keep in a purse, including a smartphone.

Shortly thereafter, all kinds of selfies taken by people she's never seen before started showing up in her Google Photos account, which I'm sure the police will find helpful.

I'm calling it: Social networking is over

(Read my column http://goo.gl/I10wwL )

And just like that, social networking is no more. The sites formerly known as social networks are pivoting to something else.

It was great while it lasted, but social networking is going away.

A few years ago, social networking was the center of the known universe. “Social” served as linguistic pixie dust that magically transformed any boring old thing into something relevant.

Call me Debbie Downer, but I'm here to tell you that those days are over.

Here's who's killing social networking and why:

Need to make sure someone takes their pills? There's an app for that!

An app called AiCure uses artificial intelligence, plus a smartphone, to make sure someone takes their medicine.

The patient has to show the pill to the camera, and the pill is recognized and the dose approved by the app.

Here's the crazy part: The app then watches the patient take the pill, and even listens to the swallow sound to make sure it's really happening. It can tell whether the pill is actually swallowed or not.

AiCure is being used in US drug trials as we speak.

If the patient fakes it, or fails to take the medicine, the app informs the trial organizer.

Why you'll want augmented hearing

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/xtXoLq )

The past few years have seen the emergence of a smattering of cloud-based white noise sites that simulate coffee shops. Sites such as Coffitivity and Hipstersound let you not only choose the ambient sounds of a coffee shop, but also specific locations such as Brazil or Paris. A site called Coding gives you the sounds of a room full of developers writing code.

There are many others.

These sites are nice. But they're basically just recorded and looped sounds.

The new world of augmented hearing will replace canned sounds with the digital processing of actual sounds.

Here's how you can try augmented hearing free, and also learn about the coming wave of augmented hearing devices:

Buzzfeed whispers the news with new ASMR Facebook Live channel

BuzzFeed is conducting an experiment on Facebook Live to whisper the news.

ASMR, the initials for "autonomous sensory meridian response," is the effect of whispering and various sounds that has the effect of calming and mesmerizing some people, a "brain orgasm," according to some.

BuzzFeed calls it "a euphoric journey through the news."

It's weird because the news itself is filled with upsetting realities like terror attacks, drug cartel murders and Donald Trump, and you receive those realities while being lulled into a trance.

Shooting down drones is actually a thing

Apparently they make drones specifically to be shot out of the sky with shotguns. The leading brand is called Gnat.

Here's video of drone-shooting enthusiasts doing their thing:

Worst portable charger design ever

The Powerbomb is a portable, 13,000 mAH charger that can charge your phone or tablet and get you arrested at the airport.

It looks like a hand grenade, for some reason.

(Fortunately, I don't believe this is an actual product. Just a bad design.)

How the smartphone is being reinvented (in 7 cases)

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/en7U77 )

A popular gadget blogger proclaimed last week that "phone design has plateaued," that we have "reached peak smartphone" and that smartphones are pretty much as good as they're going to get. She has a point.

And yet move forward we must. Smartphone users crave new features, and I believe that's why innovation is moving out of the smartphone and into smartphone cases.

No, I'm not talking about mere customization, like Google's new $35 Live Case, which lets you customize your Nexus case with personal photos and gives you a "Shortcut button" that you can assign to any number of actions on the phone.

I'm not talking about "weaponized" smartphone cases, like the idiotic case that looks like a gun or the IDEAL Conceal gun that looks like a smartphone case -- or even 247 Security's Volt case, which doubles as a 50,000-volt stun gun.

I'm talking about innovation that extends the features and functionality of the smartphone itself and that transforms the smartphone into a super smartphone.

Here are seven cases that reinvent the smartphone:

Hollywood censors another movie for the Chinese Communist Party

In the Marvel comic, "Dr. Strange," a character called "The Ancient One" was a Tibetan man.

But for the upcoming movie, they made "The Ancient One" a British woman played by Tilda Swinton.

The reason, it turns out, is appeasement of the Chinese Communist Party, which doesn't want anyone bringing attention to their annexation of Tibet, their cultural genocide of Tibet, or their treatment of the Dalai Lama.

It's one of many, MANY ways that the Chinese government censors what you see, hear, read and know, regardless of whether you live in a country with "free speech" or not.

Who knew that "Spanish" was a race?

I just signed up for the "social operating system" called notospy.com just to check it out.

When you sign up, they ask you a bunch of personal questions, including your "race."

For "race," the options are "African-American," "Caucasian," "Spanish," "European" and "Asian."

Is "African-American" a race? What if you're African or of African descent but are not an American?

Is "Spanish" a distinct "race," from "European"?

The real question is: What are the notospy people smoking?

Why bots aren't ready for prime time

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/Fou6lI )

Everybody's hyping bots as a solution to out-of-control mobile apps. Don't believe the hype.

The breathless promises about bots are just raising expectations among users, who will be disappointed, get turned off by their limited capabilities and may never come back.

This year will not be "The Year of the Bot," as so many journalists are proclaiming. It's going to be the year that users mock, hate and are confused by bots.

Bots just aren't ready for prime time.

Here's what you need to know:

Five ways Europeans are different from Americans

Europeans and Americans share most values. But according to a Pew poll, there are five fundamental ways we differ.

Here they are:

1. Americans are more likely to believe they control their own destiny

2. Americans tend to prioritize individual liberty, while Europeans tend to value the role of the state to ensure no one in society is in need

3. There is greater tolerance in the U.S. than in Europe for offensive speech

4. Religion is significantly less important to Europeans than to Americans

5. Americans and Europeans often disagree on questions about morality, especially on issues related to sexuality

And you're next.

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have successfully transmitted real-time video-rate data through giant slabs of raw meat.

The research is working on ultrasonic communications with implanted medical devices.

Soon you'll bring home the data and fry it up in a PAN (personal area network).

Why even Google can't connect Cuba

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/VwheBi )

Reports say Google intends to help wire Cuba and bring the island into the 21st century. But that's not going to happen.

I spent a month in Cuba until last week, and I was there when the president said Google would help the Cuban people with better broadband. But I think the possibilities of what Google might accomplish in Cuba are misunderstood.

The Cuban government uses high prices and draconian laws to prevent the majority of Cubans from having any access to the Internet at all. The government actively prevents fast, easy access as a matter of policy. It's not a technical problem. It's a political one.

Here's why even Google can't help the Cuban people get online:
