Markos Giannopoulos13,655Engagers VI: Christmas edition // It's a festive season so my monthly "round-up & thank you" circle is on the right mood!First some stats on people who engaged me (gathered via +Circloscope) and on my posts (tracked by +CircleCount):September: 620 plussers, 93 commentators and 86 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 745 +1s, 74 re-shares and 117 comments October: 395 plussers, 33 commentators and 39 sharers on 43 posts for a total of 1057 +1s, 80 re-shares and 165 comments November: 616 plussers, 114 commentators and 176 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 1109 +1s, 234 re-shares and 227 commentsA great month fuelled by two posts: 6+1 WordPress initial-setup plugins  (http://bit.ly/1bKXVgX 359 +1s, 59 comments, 183 re-shares) and Ode à Eiffel (http://bit.ly/1heptNZ 46 +1s, 4 comments, 5 re-shares). If I wanted to get "analytical" about it, it was two posts with some decent value (helpful list of plugins in one case on a every-day issue for a WordPress developer and an album of 18 original photos of night Paris on the other) :) So on to the circle: the formula for this month is - Plussers who are on over 3 engagers circles (so basically who have engaged with me in previous months as well this one)  - Sharers and commentators - A few kind highly-engaging people who have shared original circles including me. - People with over 300 in G+'s "relevance score" (as reported by +Circloscope), e.g. the people Google considers that I interact more and post similar content to mine (or of my interest)All in all, this came to a healthy group of 340 content creators and real engagers interested in technology and photography. Feel free to add them! As usual, stats and circle creation for this post were only made possible thanks to +CircleCount and +Circloscope. #engagers   #circleshare #circlesharing   #circleversary #milestone #googleplus #circleoftheday #circleplus #public #publiccircles 2013-12-16 17:49:57340441177CC G+

Thomas Hawk6,164,4602,500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 5 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Thus far, I've shared last name A-Da, Da-Ho, Ho-Mi and Mi-Sh.  Today's , part 5 of 5, represents Sh-Z. I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for part 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OCPart 3-5:  http://goo.gl/lyVn6fPart 4-5:  http://goo.gl/Tq9HCO*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-05 16:07:314714531110CC G+

Charles Lupica66,461             Top 1000 most followed active        photographers sharing content on G+                  Circle One: A to JThis  is the first of two circles,  I'll share the second circle this weekend so that they're not so on top of each other.  The circles have been divided alphabetically to help give more exposure to people with fewer followers. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated. It has been two weeks since I announced my intent to update my circle of the 500 most followed photographers on G+.  I decided to do things a bit differently this time and so I'll share the top 1000.   To build the circles and the list I enlisted the aid of +Bill Wood +Gemma Costa +Jen Baptist +Kat Scan and +Margaret Tompkins.  They built circles and vetted profiles.  My starting point for this was a list of 2000 names generously provided to me by +CircleCount.  Thank you all for all of your help.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the contents of what will be in the two circles. The script / finding namesThe script is provided by CircleCount and looks through the tagline of every profile on CircleCount to find the word "photo" or "foto".  If a photographer doesn't have a CircleCount profile they won't be found.  If one of these two words isn't in their tagline, they won't be found.  A few people I know have fallen into this flaw in my thinking.  To fix this, CircleCount has asked me to provide a "whitelist" of names that the script misses.  The white-list list adds another 30 or so names to the result. How was the list processedThe list was sorted by the level of activity.  People that hadn't posted in the last month (approximately April 5 to May 5th) were removed from the list.  This included people that hadn't posted or people that had posted only once in the past 4 weeks.  Again, this has some flaws but I'm mostly happy with the results.  People who are posting only in private communities or people that interact a lot with other people but don't post their own work will get filtered out along with the people that aren't really active.  ValidationThese two circles were very heavily vetted.  Of the original 2000 names, nearly 35% do not appear in either circle.  This is a result of the filtering I mentioned above and vetting of ever single profile in the list until we had enough names to make a list of 1000 names.  The list was divided into 6 parts with Bill Wood, Gemma Costa, Jen Baptist, Kat Scan, Margaret Tompkins and me each taking a group of names.  I tried to assign the list so that the pe2013-05-16 16:41:2850113082147CC G+

David Marx4,263Shared Circle:  The Photographers Whose Posts Consistently Inspire Me Here On Google+I am writing an article tonight on how to find the right connections for photographers new to the Google+ platform.  My article is geared towards those just starting out here.  One of the things that I suggest in the article is that you start out your Google+ experience by immediately killing off the silly "what's hot and recommended" feed.  In place of that nonsense, I recommend that photographer's new to this platform start out their experience here by subscribing to this circle. This circle is a completely biased list.  This is my own personal list of photographers whose style, and whose words, resonate with my tastes everyday.  These is just a small sampling of the Google+ photographers whose posts I religiously follow and whose art, insight, and consistency inspire me.  This is a small sampling of the artists that I see sharing great art here and individuals who I believe exemplify good Google+ etiquette.   Again, this is by no means a definitive list of all the talented artists currently sharing their work on this platform.  This is not meant to be a list of the artists who have the most Google+ followers nor those who have the most industry influence.2013-04-11 05:20:1342116CC G+

Jeff Sullivan1,152,722Most-Followed 500 Photographers CircleWhile a circle like this has the obvious drawback of missing some excellent photographers newer to the site, Charles often follows up his Top 500 Most Followed Photographer circle with circles going all the way down to photographers with less than 5000 contacts.  Here are four circles Charles has created to help us discover and recognize photographers at all levels within the G+ community:Under 5000 -    Under 7500 -    Under 15,000 - 500 Most Followed Photographers - (here)I like to interact with people who are active in photography... share at least a photo or two of their own original work per week, so I'll slowly whittle the circle down to a stream of excellent photography (I've started, but may not finish for a few weeks).---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+Charles Lupica  Charles Lupica Dec 25, 2012 (edited)  -  Public►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄         Top 500 most followed photographers list                   circle of 500             and Group 6: 421 to 500►►►►►►►═════════════════════◄◄◄◄◄◄◄If you're not in this circle and you think you should be, I'm sorry.  I have missed a few people by pure accident.  My methods are entirely manual and I do miss people.  I have checked every profile and I have included only those people that share their own work, and share it on G+. Bloggers and people doing mostly reshares weren't included. Some big name photographers that don't share a lot of their own work were included - sorry for the double standard. Here is the 6th and last part  of my list of the top 500 most followed photographers - Here are links to the previous parts of the list.Group 1: http://tinyurl.com/cf58vws - 1 to 100Group 2: http://tinyurl.com/bodaspk - 101 to 193Group 3: http://tinyurl.com/bsb87u4 - 194 to 250 and circleGroup 4: http://tinyurl.com/d4ulv6q  - 250 to 340Group 5: http://tinyurl.com/cjpmgy4 - 341 to 420 Group 6: 421 to 500 and circle of 500 (this post)If you are on this list, I urge you to comment, plus and share the post. I have sifted through lots of pages and circles as well as http://circlecount.com/  to try to get an accurate list. If I'm missing anyone, please let me know.  I have specifically left off a few people who only share links to their content housed elsewhere,  people who share a lot of other people's work without sharing their own, or people that appear to be inactive. The rank numbers are off by 1 because I included the same person twice in an earlier list.#Top500CircleDec   #circleshare   #circlesharing   #sharedcircles   #sharedpubliccircles  420 +Jennifer Luzio 21797421 +Matt Suess 21794422 +2013-01-07 15:33:25500221451CC G+

André Distel4,019The People I FollowSo, here it is - my first circle share. I have a lot more people in my circles than I actually follow. With limited time and other social networking sites, I figure, I can only follow so many on a regular basis. The people in this circle are all top photographers and highly active on Google+ or simply interesting people.Don't worry if you are not in there. I have had probably not enough time to look at your stream in more detail with all the people I already follow. Just comment and let me know you are out there :). I always appreciate if people share circles with me in them, so I thought I might do that as well.Cheers,Andréwww.andredistel.com 2012-11-06 19:30:09213508CC G+

Google+Blog for WordPress 1.3.4 [Bugfix Release]

Hot on the heels of +Mike Elgan's #blogsofaugust  campaign I have gone ahead and updated the Google+Blog for WordPress plugin.  I originally created this plugin as I saw how great G+ was as a blogging platform but noticed many users were still wanting to keep their own sites populated with their own content.

Google+ Comments Used On A Personal Blog

Google have just rolled out a great feature in the way of integrated comments across the Blogger network. This will enable a greater integration of one's social identity on G+ and that of a general online persona. Google have taken it a step further though, showing all interactions on shares of the blog pages across the G+ network, giving a great view of all activity and discussion involving the posts.

Although the release is limited to Blogger, I have managed to get it up and running on my own self-hosted blog. This is not the intended use (yet), but is surely a peek of what will be available in the future. There is a good chance that this implementation will be shut down so be sure to check it out.

As soon as Google give this a go ahead, if it is requested enough I will investigate writing a WordPress plugin to implement... more »

The End Of The Rainbow

As we neared bondi a storm was passing over, luckily it didn't bring much rain with it as the 400+ photographers would likely be heard screaming for miles.  What it did bring though was this beautiful rainbow.

Sit Back And Relax

The Overhang

I was quite excited to find this large overhang down under a piece of the headland just before Bondi. If there was more time it would have been the perfect place to sit back and relax for a while.

It begins at Bronte

This was one of my first shots from where the record breaking photo walk commenced. After a quick group photo (at least quick to us as we were running a little late), I set off down to the rocks where I felt most comfortable.

The Harbour Bridge

Looking across at the harbour bridge from across the bay I could see some people climbing up doing one of the skywalk tours at sunset. Whilst it would be fun to do, I was more than happy to be sitting back taking photos.

The Golden Arches (Not McDonalds!)

There was something about this location that really stood out as I was walking past it. The way the tree was lit up was part of it, but also the colourful lighting of the windows made it impossible to walk by without taking a photo.

I can't remember exactly what this building is, but they had some kind of exhibition inside it.

I was very close to getting wet with the sudden influx of waves over these rocks. The formations around the cliffs on the coastline look amazing.

Hopefully we can head back there one day to explore them some more.

The House Across From The Opera

The Sydney Opera house is one of the best known landmarks in Australia and yet on this night the focus shifted toward the other side of the harbour, where an outdoor opera performance was taking place.

I'm not sure if this is the traditional lighting on the sails, but it was cut short due to the start of the show on our side of the water, much to the dismay of +Colby Brown  as he was trying to get his final shots of the opera house sorted (after waiting a good few minutes for the water police to turn off their lights).

This was taken the day before the record breaking photo walk hosted by +Colby Brown and +Michael Sutton. Congratulations on organising a great event - I can't wait for the next one.

Facebook mistakingly blocking some goo.gl URLs

After looking into a support ticket for one of our +Fotostat users, it was discovered that Facebook seems to be incorrectly blocking some shortened URLs.

As many people may know, URL shorteners are often used by those with malicious intent to obscure the destination site, so Facebook blocking some of these URLs is not a bad idea.  Unfortunately, this block is NOT case sensitive, and therefore will blacklist a URL of goo.gl/TEST even if goo.gl/test is the intended recipient of the block.

So if you find you are unable to post a certain shortened URL to Facebook, simply run it through the shortener again, or share the full link.

A couple of weeks ago my son celebrated his second birthday. It's such an exciting age as this is the time where our daughter really started to share her personality.

It's so crazy to me how quickly time passes once you have children. Every week brings a new change, a new adventure and often they can be somewhat surprising.

The baby of the house is no longer a baby, but I am very excited to see what lies ahead for our son.

Goodbye Summer

It's officialy autumn here in Australia and I can't help but think summer just decided to not turn up this year. We've had the crazy tropical storms that are to be expected, but not much of the hot sunny beach weather that we have become accustomed to!

Personally, I would like a refund. Here's hoping autumn is a little more rewarding. This shot was taken last year.

Google rolls out interactive posts and a write API

The latest of changes to Google+'s API and web integration brings forth a few goodies that many have been waiting for.

- Facebook connect like functionality, that gives you access to certain G+ actions when visiting approved sites that support it.  In the future this should hopefully allow Google+ Comments (in lieu of Facebook) which has been talked about a lot lately.

- Interactive Posts which allow sites to place certain calls to action on shares done within their site.  Think votes for polls, deep linking suggested purchases or inviting others to listen to a certain song.

- The ability to create 'Moments', which is Google+'s first attempt at a write API.  Moments will allow people to share certain activities that are done across supported sites or services.  Think photo sharing,fitn... more »

Another alternative for community forums offered by Discourse

Late last year I posted about the release of Google+ Communities and how they have the potential to disrupt the ageing forum ecosystem, today we have another player enter the game in Discourse.  Created by Jeff Atwood (of Coding Horror and Stack Exchange fame), +Robin Ward , +Sam Saffron and their team, the project is completely open source and has the potential to become the 'WordPress for Forums'.

The product is still in beta and has a ways to go yet but it certainly has potential. There are plans to also provide a paid one-click hosted alternative (much like wordpress.com does), but for now if you are looking to use Discourse you must set it up yourself.

What's in a logo? (and how Fotostat's came to be)

Let me start out by saying that I am not the most graphically talented guy you will ever meet.  That is actually quite an understatement.  I'm a colourblind, stick-figure drawing, artistically lacking individual.  If not for my photography I would dub myself creatively defunct.  But you know what?  I'm ok with that because it's simply not my calling in life.  It does become a problem however when one is trying to launch a startup that does not yet have a logo.

A logo is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle when it comes to brand recognition, even moreso in the online world.  It is usually the first thing a potential customer will see from your business and is the primary identifier of who you are and what you do.  That's pretty important!  With that in mind I set out on creating a smallbrief fo... more »

Twitter support added to Fotostat

One of the more common requests we get for +Fotostat is for more networks to be supported.  From the beginning we have tried to prioritise the networks we were supporting by their popularity in an effort to help out as many people as possible, but there has been one glaring omission, +Twitter.

With so many photographers utilising the micro-blogging platform it was a hard decision to not include Twitter from the outset.  Around the time Fotostat was moving through beta, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the direction Twitter was taking in relation to developers utilising the service.  Not wanting to implement something and have it shortly taken away I was hesitant to support the service at all.  After much thought and consideration I have now tentatively added Twitter to the growing list of networks.  I'd rather save our usersas mu... more »

Control whether community posts appear on your profile

Thanks for all the great feedback on how we can make Google+ Communities even better. It’s been inspiring to see all of the different ways people are using communities, and we’re excited to keep making improvements.

Community posts are a great way for people to see your different interests when they visit your Google+ profile. But some of you have asked for a way to keep community posts separate from the rest of your Google+ posts.

Today we're adding a new setting that lets you do just that! Simply visit https://www.google.com/settings/plus, look for the new "Communities" section, and make your choice. (We'll be rolling this out gradually.)

Remember that your private community posts will only be visible to people in those communities, regardless of whether or not you showcommu... more »

Fotostat is now monitoring over 1,000,000 photos

The end of each year is often a time for reflection, a time to look back on our accomplishments, our failures and everything in between.  When running a startup you tend to have quite a few data points to work with which makes it that little bit easier.

2012 was a big year for +Fotostat, bringing about about massive changes to our codebase, a couple of server upgrades and a new site design.  We invited those that signed up to the mailing list to our closed beta and then finally opened the doors to everyone with an open beta at the end of the year.  One month later and we have hit a few milestones:

Over 500 users have signed up to try the service

1,000,000 photos are being monitored to help photographers better understand their audience.

Creating a Great Looking Video for Your Product or Service

It may come as no surprise to most that having a video on your website to describe your product or service can help increase conversion rates.  It has become quite common place these days with many leading retailers, brands and startups creating quirky, funny or just plain informative videos to help turn a visitor into a customer.  But that's not all video is capable of with statistics showing that it can also also assist in reducing customer support requests, increasing social shares and even in helping sites rank better on search engines.

With this in mind I decided early on that I wanted to create a video to help describe my startup, +Fotostat [fotost.at].  Based on our experience, describing a service in words is not all that hard, but really conveying how a service can be beneficial to a customer is muchhar... more »

How I Intend to Blog in 2013

I have a confession to make, I have started blogging at least 3 times that I can recall (it is likely more) but have never managed to stick with it.  It's a common story, one that is easily proven by the abundance of first posts followed up with nothing at all on blogs all over the web.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact cause of my inability to blog for a decent amount of time but is likely a combination of lack of motivation due to other projects taking priority, lack of focus on a topic or subject for the blog and possibly the idea the noone cares what it is I have to say.  Despite having these issues in the past, I feel like this time will be different.  Some problems may still pop up from time to time but the way in which I now blog will hopefully allow me to keep on track.

Over the past year and a half or so I have beenthe... more »

Easily copy your photos from Instagram to Google+

With Instagram recently causing an uproar by changing their TOS many people went looking for an easy way to make a copy of their photos.  Given that there weren't any extremely simple solutions I decided to throw one together for myself and others to use.

I'm a little late in releasing this as I got a little caught up in the holidays but figured some may find it useful.  It didn't take too long to put together as I have a bit of experience integrating with both networks due tomy... more »

Google+ is now making a move on forums

Anyone who has been on the internet for a decent amount of time has been exposed to forums in some way or another.  Whether it be on a quest for information, or to engage with those of similar interests, forums have been a huge part of the community side of the internet.  Even though forums have been around for so long, there really hasn't been much in the way of disruption, until now.

Today Google has announced Google+Communities, a way for like-minded people to come together and share their views on whatever the subject of the community is.  People have been looking for ways to connect with others interested in certain topics since G+ was first announced.  This was the whole reason I originally created group.as, a site where you could find people grouped by topical interest.  It's great to see Google pick up the slack here tohelp... more »

This is my last upload from my most recent shoot at Cabarita.  I took this shortly before deciding to put on my long exposure filter which produced some of my earlier uploads.  It is sometimes hard to decide what kind of shot to take as these are certainly much easier and less time consuming but it really comes down to the look and feel that you are after from each location.

Horizon of Fire

I tried heading to a new location earlier in the week hoping to capture somewhere I hadn't been before. Unfortunately I wasn't all that happy with the compositions in that area and had to walk further up the beach to somewhere more familiar. Half way there though I spotted this little rock formation, and though it was facing away from the sunrise I really liked the way that the horizon had lit up.
