Researchers "weighed" the central parts of Saturn's most massive ring for the first time.

The results confirm that more opaque areas in the rings do not necessarily contain more material.

Research on the mass of Saturn's rings has important implications for their age.

It seems intuitive that an opaque material should contain more stuff than a more translucent substance. For example, muddier water has more suspended particles of dirt in it than clearer water. Likewise, you might think that, in the rings of Saturn, more opaque areas contain a greater concentration of material than places where the rings seem more transparent.

An animated Doctor Who series was planned by Nelvana. Concept art was drawn by Ted Bastien but the series was never produced.
In 1990, following the cancellation of the live action series, the BBC approached the Canadian animation house Nelvana to propose a animated continuation of the show. The cartoon series was to feature an unspecified Doctor incorporating elements of various BBC series Doctors and was not to be oriented to a younger audience than the live action series but was intended to be a continuation of the cancelled series but in animated form in order to save costs but with design elements that would promote merchandise sales.

Concept art was prepared depicting several possible versions of the Doctor modelled on actors such as Peter O'Toole, Jeff Goldblum and Christoper Lloyd with elements of the wardrobes of previous Doctors and new versions of allies such as K-9 and enemies such as the Daleks and Cybermen. The Master was to be " half man, half robot with a cybernetic bird accessory and a face modelled after Sean Connery." The show was also to feature female companions from Earth, and space battles which the BBC would not have been able to afford for the live action series.

The series would have been Nelvana's biggest show to date, however, according to Bastien, "it was pulled out from under us" after a British animation studio told the BBC that it could do what Nelvana intended for a much lower price.[1]The project did not proceed further and no pilot was produced.

The Superbowl ad reminds us of when we had goals for space exploration and actually accomplished them not #journeytomars hash tags that are mere mirages of actual goals. When we focused our collective minds to solve the problem of space we engineered great things #forthebenefitofall but sadly today we PowerPoint away our time talking about going but never leaving the shallow waters of low earth orbit because of myopic vision and attention deficit. I expect a redirect in a year or two that puts us with our international partners on a path for a lunar gateway, telerobotics on the surface, then a lunar base. An international Mars mission is realistically no earlier than 2050. The Moon is calling it is time to answer.

Combining Wearables and 3D printing to keep soldiers caloric and nutritional intake on task
the field soldier is getting hungry or not enough protein today his wearable sends a signal back to base camp and a high energy protein bar specific to his nutritional/caloric needs is printed out.

It would work well for the Space Station or future missions because workload would drive different needs each day (going for a spacewalk better bulk up)

The email I sent out Feb 3rd 2003 regarding the Loss of Columbia and her Crew
I want to thank everyone who emailed/phoned these past few days giving their support in these trying times. I am doing one blanket email to try to gather my thoughts(sorry for the length) and answer questions on where I was, but feel free to email me back. I will pass on anything I know, but at this
point I know nothing more than what has been reported on the news.

I was not in Mission Control for the STS-107 Entry. I could have been there to observe and train, but instead I was in Missouri for my future brother in law's graduation from Army basic training. He was going right from basic to Germany with the possibility of being deployed so I wanted to be there for his graduation to show him how proud I was. I have worked my fair share of landings and wasn't assigned to work this entry so if I was going to be there on Saturday it would have been merely as an observer.

Do I regret not being there? I can't say. Do I think I might have noticed something that the people on console missed? No, I had the opportunity to sub at A/E Control during one of the final ascent/entry sims in the weeks before liftoff and I have the utmost confidence in the team that was on console. From all reports so far everything was nominal up until the loss of comm and I for one am not
about to start second guessing or pointing fingers at the team.

How am I doing? pretty crappy right now. I really feel like we lost 8 members of the family. Columbia was like the family dog who had gotten old, but she was still loyal and true and you knew you could count on her. I was amazed as I drove home with all the signs from the local businesses offering their support. We really are One NASA and it hurts to lose friends like this. I didn't know any of them personally other than a meeting here and there or maybe in a sim together, but right now it feels like a big part of me is gone.

As most of you know space isn't just my job it has been my destiny and dream for most of my life. To work here at mission control is a wonder each and every day and really is the stuff dreams are made of. For some this is just a job, others share my enthusiasm and love for the program, but everyone is dedicated 110% each day to bring each astronaut safely home every mission and when they don't then we all feel the pain and anguish like right now.

I watched Apollo One from the HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon" on Sunday to try to get some prospective. It wasn't carelessness but failure of imagination that caused the Apollo One Fire and maybe we have failed once again in our imagination on what could have gone wrong. For all the training we do to prepare for each mission, the trainers can only come up with a limited amount of scenarios, but obviously there is at least one way out scenario that we didn't think of. In some sense watching that episode and seeing how those left behind handled the tragedy spoke to me more deeply now than when the series first aired. I remember Challenger, but being in junior high and only dreaming of working on the space program it didn't hit me as hard as this disaster hits now.

To paraphrase what John Shea (former head of the Apollo Program) said to Harold
Storm (fmr head of North American Aviation -they built the Apollo command module) at the end of the episode " As tragic as the loss of losing the astronauts is, I think it is much worse for those of us left behind."

So what can I tell you about where we go from here? Not much, even before I got back into town on Saturday I was trying to find out if there was anything to do to help. I got in touch with my boss when I got home and right now it is a wait and see how the investigation is going to be set up. I do believe that we will get to the bottom of what happened and make sure we fix it and get back to flying, but I don't think we can rush the investigation on account of the ISS. There are mechanisms in place, though I am not privy to them all, but I am sure that in the near term our international partners will come together to ensure that we don't abandon the station and its crew.

I am a little surprised at how the whole nation is supporting us in this time, but it is a shame that it takes a tragedy to once again get the nation interested in the space program. For too long shuttle missions were of little interest to the general public. The meager budget that kept shrinking was seen as too much for those who cared little for space science and more for problems here on earth. Space has always been dangerous, but its benefits are for all humankind. In the 40+ years of NASA's history we have now lost 24 brave men and women in the pursuit of space exploration. They knew and accepted the risks and we on the ground work diligently to keep them safe and bring them home. Some times we have let them down, but I do believe we will pick ourselves up from this latest tragedy and continue moving forward.

Space is our future, not just for the U.S. but for all us on planet Earth. We need to keep pushing out and understanding our place in the universe. Someday in the distant future this planet will be gone whether by nuclear war, exhausting of the sun or some other disaster, but for whatever the reason some day they will speak of "Earth that was" only if we continue our exploration of space. If we let this latest incident ground us and stop us from finding our place among the stars then when the earth is finally destroyed it will take with it all of our potential, all of our heroes/writers/explorers, all of our dreams, all of what we were and who we were with it. If we don't fix this and continue to explore then who will remember Shakespeare, Columbus, Einstein, Hawkins, Grissom, McAuliffe, and now Husband and the rest of the STS-107 Columbia crew?

Error is detected by ATVC/ASA hardware when sensed delta pressure across actuator exceeds a limit indicating the FCS channel is no longer driving the actuator. FCS CH 4 failure will annunicate for any of the following: LIB / LOB / RIB / ROB elevon actutor 4, rudder actuator 4, speedbrake actuator 4, SSME 1/2/3 P/Y Actuator D, & L/R SRB R/T actuator D.

Since the speedbrake is at zero but is being commanded to "over-close" position (-10) this results in a force fight between channels 1,2,3 and channel 4.

13:59:35/36 Sideslip on vehicle changes sign. The event occurred between the two times listed. Just prior to initial LOS the magnitude of the negative Sideslip started to decrease and between 59:34 and 59:37 sideslip grew from -.6 to +.8 deg. With this change, the normal roll and yaw moments on the vehicle would change sign. Aerodynamic forces due to sideslip are now reinforcing aerodynamic asymmetry.

13:59:36 Growth in Bank attitude error Up until this time the flight control had been able to maintain the Bank error around 5 deg. Aerojet DAP drops left wing to compensate for increasing aerodymanic moments, creating a bank attitude error.

The ROLL REF message is triggered when Roll command req'd to fly reference profiile falls below 37 degs. Message generation less than 10 secs (5 guidance cycles) after start of 4 yaw jets firing suggests rapid change in Lift to Drag ratio.

Note: BFS does not have this message in the Fault message stack. It is likely that BFS annunciated this message during the 25 second gap of no data, but that if it was annunciated it was pushed out of the downlist stack by additional fault messages (at least 5) annunciated during the gap.

CAUTION: Data from this period is suspect because multiple bit errors were evident in this reconstructed data. Many of the parameters were 1 Hz data and therefore only one data sample was available. Where possible, high rate data and/or corroborating data were used to draw subsystem performance conclusions. However, some of the conclusions drawn below may be in error or misinterpreted.

During this final 2 second period of reconstructed data, the data indicates the following systems werenominal: APUs were running and WSB cooling was evident (although potentially overcooling). MPS integrity was still evident. Fuel cells were generating power and the PRSD tanks/lines were intact. Comm and navaids systems in the forward fuselage were performing nominally. RSB, Body Flap, main engine, and right wing temps appeared active. With the exception of an apparent FES shutdown, ECLSS performance was nominal.

During this final 2 second period of reconstructed data, the data indicates the following systems wereoff-nominal: All three Hyd systems were lost (zero pressure/zero rsvr qty's). The left inbd/outbd elevon actuator temps were either OSL or no data exists. WSB's appeared to be overcooling APU lube oil. The FES appeared to have shutdown. Majority of left OMS pod sensors were either OSH or OSL or no data exists. Multiple BFS and PASS fault message annunciations for left pod hardware were found in the buffer. Elevated temps at bottom bondline centerline skin forward and aft of the wheel wells and at the port side structure over left wing were observed. EPDC shows general upward shift in Main Bus amps and downward shift in Main Bus volts. AC3 phase A inverter appeared disconnected from the AC Buss.

GNC data suggests vehicle was in an uncommanded attitude and was exhibiting uncontrolled rates. Yaw rate was at the sensor maximum of 20 deg/sec. The flight control mode was in AUTO. (Note that all Nav-derived parameters (e.g., alpha) are suspect due to high rates corrupting the IMU state.)

Based on the nominal and off-nominal system performance described above, it appears that the fwd/mid/aft fuselage, right wing, and right pod were still intact.

Note: BFS downlist bits indicating CSS mode are initialized to "ON" for entry because BFS does not have an "Auto" mode, is always CSS, and will drive the eyebrow panel lights ON if engaged. These bits are always on in BFS through all of OPS 3 until touchdown.
