Beauty pageants are about grace and poise under pressure as well as beauty. Contestants are expected to be an expert at soundbites and be able to answer something about everything. I was a contestant in a pageant a long time ago (Miss Guam World) when I was merely 17 (so young!) and simply, you are coached to sound confident and fluent, even if the answer is incredibly dumb. The bar is not high in this world. Hard questions are asked so contestants can prove confidence, not intelligence. A bit messed up, I agree.
Why do a pageant? Someone from the Miss World pageant committee approached me about joining and I thought, "Now, how many people are asked to join a pageant? This ia a unique opportunity do something beyond my penchant for intellectual pursuits." I saw it as an experience opportunity, one that I'm glad I participated in so I have a perspective of that world, even though it... more »

Good interview with the geneticist who discovered the BRCA1 gene.
Worth the read if you are trying to understand the Supreme Court ruling about patenting of genes.
Also weird to know that a movie has been made about her starring Helen Hunt (to be released later) but she knew nothing about it!

An article about education from the man who devised the "hole in the wall experiment" where a computer was embedded in a wall in a slum in Delhi for children to use freely. He aimed to prove young people could be taught computers easily without formal training.

She attached her Nikon to her telescope and found the ISS using an iPhone tracker! Technology these days!

Today (June 16) marks the 50th anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's landmark 1963 flight, which launched her into history as the first woman to fly to space, just two years after Yuri Gagarin performed the first spaceflight ever in 1961. 50 Years of Women in Space: http://oak.ctx.ly/r/6bij

Four Women in Space at One Time (2010)!
The greatest number of women in space at one time was four aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2010!
From lower right: NASA astronauts Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger, Stephanie Wilson, both STS-131 mission specialists, Tracy Caldwell Dyson, Expedition 23 flight engineer; and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Naoko Yamazaki, STS-131 mission specialist, on the International Space Station in the Cupola.

Lone Signal: First Continous Message Beacon to Find and Say Hello to an Extraterrestrial Civilization
A team of scientists and entrepreneurs are launching a new initiative called “Lone Signal” which will send the first continuous mass “hailing messages” out into space starting later this month. They’ll be specifically targeting one star system, Gliese 526, which has been identified as a potentially habitable solar system.
And yes, the general public can participate.

Trivia.
Escape velocity from Phobos is merely 25 mph. That's weak gravity!
And for Deimos it's only 5.6 m/s (20 km/h),
Usain Bolt was doing over 28mph when he broke the world 100 meter record at olympics.
A fit bicyclist easily could easily go 25mph, if they could get traction to move vertically, of course!

From the article:
What the kids did discover, however, was that Big Data technologies like SAP HANA can have meaningful impact on a very pragmatic basis. Analytics can reveal layers that may otherwise be hidden at an aggregate level. For example, knowing which neighborhoods to police at what time of day, determining the optimal route for the police patrol car, ensuring that broken street lamps are promptly fixed and graffiti cleaned up before it begins to fester…. these are all small actions that City Hall can take to ensure that San Francisco remains not just an iconic landmark but a safe place to call home for its 800,000 residents

Being "sciencegoddess" comes with a lot of opportunities but not often does it come with a paycheck! I have a great day job at UIUC as a faculty lecturer teaching students online (after many years of teaching lab courses). Here's a sneak peek at my job, for those of you curious about that. This is the introductory video for a course I teach to certified teachers working on their Masters of Science Teaching. This summer I teach two versions of a course on the Human Genome and Bioinformatics.

This unique atlas comprises a series of maps showing the distribution and abundance of minerals formed in water, by volcanic activity, and by weathering to create the dust that makes Mars red.
Together the maps provide a global context for the dominant geological processes that have defined the planet's history.
The maps were built from ten years of data collected by the OMEGA visible and infrared mineralogical mapping spectrometer on Mars Express.
