A fascinating story about a woman I was unaware of. A critique from Edward Weston changed her life and she once bested Ansel Adams in a landscape photo contest. (Mr. Weston placed first, Ms. Lavenson second and Mr. Adams fourth. Her prize was $75.)

"Ansel Adams produced some of the most iconic and breathtaking images of the great American outdoors: His famous photo of the church and tombstones in Hernandez, N.M., beneath the rising moon; images of New Mexico pueblos under the hot sun; quivering aspens at dawn in Colorado; and the peaks of the Sierra Nevada in California by every light you can imagine.
Today, the Corcoran Gallery of Art is opening a touring show that includes more than 125 of those fine-art photographs of nature."

Mike Johnston of TOP received a letter with nice questions...
Read Mike's reply here (scroll to the end of the post there):

"Hi Mike,
You’ve written at some length about the pros and cons (mostly cons) of editioning photographic prints (and I agree with what you say ). My main problem, and I’m sure that many other photographers have the same problem) is on pricing my prints. I am of the opinion that non-editioned prints are infinitely reproducible and therefore should be priced accordingly. I currently charge £75 (US$115) for an A2 sized inkjet print—is that reasonable? Am I shooting myself in the foot with this relatively low price—will people not take my work seriously because it is not 'seriously' priced? This really frustrates me! Sometimes I think that I should l... more »

We take photographs. We live for light. We breath vision. It's what keeps us going. We are photographers.
But David is blind. Totally blind. He sees colour only in his dreams. He says he feels like a ghost - nobody notices him - but he only knows he's for real when he walks into something and feels the pain.
Please watch this video by UK documentary photographer +J A Mortram who's been documenting David's life for a while along with the lives of many other folk in his home town. It's a project called Small Town Inertia. It's important.
I've never asked before but if you're one of the Google+ big wigs with thousands of followers then please would you consider sharing this? We want to raise - no, we WILL raise - $3200 dollars so that David can have a scanner and then be able to read again.
If you feel moved then please contribute - a... more »

New Nik Collection by Google training video, Silver Efex Pro 2 The Zone Mapping System
Ever wonder what the little step chart in the lower right hand corner of your Silver Efex Pro 2 was? It's the Zone Mapping System! Basically it is an indicator system that allows the artist to visualize the relationships of tonal values in the black and white photograph. Check out the video to learn more.
Do you have a particular use for the zone mapping system that I didn't talk about here? If so let me know! I'd love to share all the different ways the tool can be used.
