Google+ Comments Used On A Personal Blog

Google have just rolled out a great feature in the way of integrated comments across the Blogger network. This will enable a greater integration of one's social identity on G+ and that of a general online persona. Google have taken it a step further though, showing all interactions on shares of the blog pages across the G+ network, giving a great view of all activity and discussion involving the posts.

Although the release is limited to Blogger, I have managed to get it up and running on my own self-hosted blog. This is not the intended use (yet), but is surely a peek of what will be available in the future. There is a good chance that this implementation will be shut down so be sure to check it out.

As soon as Google give this a go ahead, if it is requested enough I will investigate writing a WordPress plugin to implement... more »

If Trees Could Talk

Another interesting tree found in the gardens on our walk to shoot the harbour bridge. I'm sure plenty of people have sat beneath it to enjoy the shade that it gives. Luckily the man that was there as we arrived moved so that I was able to capture this shot.

Another Day At The Beach

The weather was a bit touch and go on this afternoon at Bronte beach, but all these people at the beach didn't seem to care. Those clouds would soon bring some showers though.

Sails In The Sky

A different perspective of the opera house.  It was being lit up by an outdoor opera event from just across the bay.

Puddles Of Reflection

Somewhere half way between Bronte and Bondi beaches in Sydney.  This was around the large cliff face seen in some of my previous photos.

The End Of The Rainbow

As we neared bondi a storm was passing over, luckily it didn't bring much rain with it as the 400+ photographers would likely be heard screaming for miles.  What it did bring though was this beautiful rainbow.

Sit Back And Relax

I was quite excited to find this large overhang down under a piece of the headland just before Bondi. If there was more time it would have been the perfect place to sit back and relax for a while.

It begins at Bronte

This was one of my first shots from where the record breaking photo walk commenced. After a quick group photo (at least quick to us as we were running a little late), I set off down to the rocks where I felt most comfortable.

The Harbour Bridge

Looking across at the harbour bridge from across the bay I could see some people climbing up doing one of the skywalk tours at sunset. Whilst it would be fun to do, I was more than happy to be sitting back taking photos.

The Golden Arches (Not McDonalds!)

There was something about this location that really stood out as I was walking past it. The way the tree was lit up was part of it, but also the colourful lighting of the windows made it impossible to walk by without taking a photo.

I can't remember exactly what this building is, but they had some kind of exhibition inside it.

Hopefully we can head back there one day to explore them some more.

The House Across From The Opera

The Sydney Opera house is one of the best known landmarks in Australia and yet on this night the focus shifted toward the other side of the harbour, where an outdoor opera performance was taking place.

I'm not sure if this is the traditional lighting on the sails, but it was cut short due to the start of the show on our side of the water, much to the dismay of +Colby Brown  as he was trying to get his final shots of the opera house sorted (after waiting a good few minutes for the water police to turn off their lights).

This was taken the day before the record breaking photo walk hosted by +Colby Brown and +Michael Sutton. Congratulations on organising a great event - I can't wait for the next one.

Facebook mistakingly blocking some goo.gl URLs

After looking into a support ticket for one of our +Fotostat users, it was discovered that Facebook seems to be incorrectly blocking some shortened URLs.

As many people may know, URL shorteners are often used by those with malicious intent to obscure the destination site, so Facebook blocking some of these URLs is not a bad idea.  Unfortunately, this block is NOT case sensitive, and therefore will blacklist a URL of goo.gl/TEST even if goo.gl/test is the intended recipient of the block.

So if you find you are unable to post a certain shortened URL to Facebook, simply run it through the shortener again, or share the full link.

Growing Up Pt 2

My little girl is usually quite camera shy, though during this shoot she was quite happy to really pose for a few shots. This is one of her own poses, as most would know it is next to impossible to force a set pose on a 3 year old!

Growing up

A couple of weeks ago my son celebrated his second birthday. It's such an exciting age as this is the time where our daughter really started to share her personality.

It's so crazy to me how quickly time passes once you have children. Every week brings a new change, a new adventure and often they can be somewhat surprising.

The baby of the house is no longer a baby, but I am very excited to see what lies ahead for our son.

Goodbye Summer

It's officialy autumn here in Australia and I can't help but think summer just decided to not turn up this year. We've had the crazy tropical storms that are to be expected, but not much of the hot sunny beach weather that we have become accustomed to!

Personally, I would like a refund. Here's hoping autumn is a little more rewarding. This shot was taken last year.

First test of the Fotostat Lightroom plugin!

Reflections of a war photographer

I'm a big fan of TED talks and was surprised I hadn't come across this one before by photo journalist James Nachtwey.  The way he speaks of his experiences shows that he cares deeply for the regions in which he takes the photos and for humanity in general.

Well worth the watch.

Google rolls out interactive posts and a write API

The latest of changes to Google+'s API and web integration brings forth a few goodies that many have been waiting for.

- Facebook connect like functionality, that gives you access to certain G+ actions when visiting approved sites that support it.  In the future this should hopefully allow Google+ Comments (in lieu of Facebook) which has been talked about a lot lately.

- Interactive Posts which allow sites to place certain calls to action on shares done within their site.  Think votes for polls, deep linking suggested purchases or inviting others to listen to a certain song.

- The ability to create 'Moments', which is Google+'s first attempt at a write API.  Moments will allow people to share certain activities that are done across supported sites or services.  Think photo sharing,fitn... more »

Another alternative for community forums offered by Discourse

Late last year I posted about the release of Google+ Communities and how they have the potential to disrupt the ageing forum ecosystem, today we have another player enter the game in Discourse.  Created by Jeff Atwood (of Coding Horror and Stack Exchange fame), +Robin Ward , +Sam Saffron and their team, the project is completely open source and has the potential to become the 'WordPress for Forums'.

The product is still in beta and has a ways to go yet but it certainly has potential. There are plans to also provide a paid one-click hosted alternative (much like wordpress.com does), but for now if you are looking to use Discourse you must set it up yourself.

To see it live, check out the sandbox forum @ try.discourse.org

What's in a logo? (and how Fotostat's came to be)

Let me start out by saying that I am not the most graphically talented guy you will ever meet.  That is actually quite an understatement.  I'm a colourblind, stick-figure drawing, artistically lacking individual.  If not for my photography I would dub myself creatively defunct.  But you know what?  I'm ok with that because it's simply not my calling in life.  It does become a problem however when one is trying to launch a startup that does not yet have a logo.

A logo is one of the most important pieces of the puzzle when it comes to brand recognition, even moreso in the online world.  It is usually the first thing a potential customer will see from your business and is the primary identifier of who you are and what you do.  That's pretty important!  With that in mind I set out on creating a smallbrief fo... more »

Twitter support added to Fotostat

One of the more common requests we get for +Fotostat is for more networks to be supported.  From the beginning we have tried to prioritise the networks we were supporting by their popularity in an effort to help out as many people as possible, but there has been one glaring omission, +Twitter.

With so many photographers utilising the micro-blogging platform it was a hard decision to not include Twitter from the outset.  Around the time Fotostat was moving through beta, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the direction Twitter was taking in relation to developers utilising the service.  Not wanting to implement something and have it shortly taken away I was hesitant to support the service at all.  After much thought and consideration I have now tentatively added Twitter to the growing list of networks.  I'd rather save our usersas mu... more »

Control whether community posts appear on your profile

Thanks for all the great feedback on how we can make Google+ Communities even better. It’s been inspiring to see all of the different ways people are using communities, and we’re excited to keep making improvements.

Community posts are a great way for people to see your different interests when they visit your Google+ profile. But some of you have asked for a way to keep community posts separate from the rest of your Google+ posts.

Today we're adding a new setting that lets you do just that! Simply visit https://www.google.com/settings/plus, look for the new "Communities" section, and make your choice. (We'll be rolling this out gradually.)

Remember that your private community posts will only be visible to people in those communities, regardless of whether or not you showcommu... more »

Fotostat is now monitoring over 1,000,000 photos

The end of each year is often a time for reflection, a time to look back on our accomplishments, our failures and everything in between.  When running a startup you tend to have quite a few data points to work with which makes it that little bit easier.

2012 was a big year for +Fotostat, bringing about about massive changes to our codebase, a couple of server upgrades and a new site design.  We invited those that signed up to the mailing list to our closed beta and then finally opened the doors to everyone with an open beta at the end of the year.  One month later and we have hit a few milestones:

Over 500 users have signed up to try the service

1,000,000 photos are being monitored to help photographers better understand their audience.

Creating a Great Looking Video for Your Product or Service

It may come as no surprise to most that having a video on your website to describe your product or service can help increase conversion rates.  It has become quite common place these days with many leading retailers, brands and startups creating quirky, funny or just plain informative videos to help turn a visitor into a customer.  But that's not all video is capable of with statistics showing that it can also also assist in reducing customer support requests, increasing social shares and even in helping sites rank better on search engines.

With this in mind I decided early on that I wanted to create a video to help describe my startup, +Fotostat [fotost.at].  Based on our experience, describing a service in words is not all that hard, but really conveying how a service can be beneficial to a customer is muchhar... more »

How I Intend to Blog in 2013

I have a confession to make, I have started blogging at least 3 times that I can recall (it is likely more) but have never managed to stick with it.  It's a common story, one that is easily proven by the abundance of first posts followed up with nothing at all on blogs all over the web.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact cause of my inability to blog for a decent amount of time but is likely a combination of lack of motivation due to other projects taking priority, lack of focus on a topic or subject for the blog and possibly the idea the noone cares what it is I have to say.  Despite having these issues in the past, I feel like this time will be different.  Some problems may still pop up from time to time but the way in which I now blog will hopefully allow me to keep on track.

Over the past year and a half or so I have beenthe... more »

Easily copy your photos from Instagram to Google+

With Instagram recently causing an uproar by changing their TOS many people went looking for an easy way to make a copy of their photos.  Given that there weren't any extremely simple solutions I decided to throw one together for myself and others to use.

Instagrab will ask you to sign in to both your Instagram and Google+ accounts, then with the click of a button will create a private Instagram album on G+ and copy all of your photos across.  Transfers will be queued up, so if it isn't happening right away please just a wait a while as there are likely others using the service.

I'm a little late in releasing this as I got a little caught up in the holidays but figured some may find it useful.  It didn't take too long to put together as I have a bit of experience integrating with both networks due tomy... more »

Google+ is now making a move on forums

Anyone who has been on the internet for a decent amount of time has been exposed to forums in some way or another.  Whether it be on a quest for information, or to engage with those of similar interests, forums have been a huge part of the community side of the internet.  Even though forums have been around for so long, there really hasn't been much in the way of disruption, until now.

Today Google has announced Google+Communities, a way for like-minded people to come together and share their views on whatever the subject of the community is.  People have been looking for ways to connect with others interested in certain topics since G+ was first announced.  This was the whole reason I originally created group.as, a site where you could find people grouped by topical interest.  It's great to see Google pick up the slack here tohelp... more »

After watching a large storm cell that had formed just off the coast yesterday afternoon (albeit, from afar) I was reminded of a shoot from a few weeks back showing a storm passing in the distance.  I haven't really shot any storms before so am looking forward to seeing what summer has in store for us.

Splash at dawn

This is my last upload from my most recent shoot at Cabarita.  I took this shortly before deciding to put on my long exposure filter which produced some of my earlier uploads.  It is sometimes hard to decide what kind of shot to take as these are certainly much easier and less time consuming but it really comes down to the look and feel that you are after from each location.

Horizon of Fire

I tried heading to a new location earlier in the week hoping to capture somewhere I hadn't been before. Unfortunately I wasn't all that happy with the compositions in that area and had to walk further up the beach to somewhere more familiar. Half way there though I spotted this little rock formation, and though it was facing away from the sunrise I really liked the way that the horizon had lit up.

With the sun just start to peek over the line of dense cloud over the horizon the entire sky lit up. The long exposure of this shot allowed the light to be pulled out into streaks across the sky. It really set off well against the headland.
