Portrait of the brown bull ant, Myrmecia pyriformis. This giant, inch-long insect from Victoria, Australia, is much larger than any of our North American ants. It's one of the few ants capable of staring down humans in the field. Kind of spooky to be followed by an ant, even for an ant guy like me.
This image almost made the cut for my spring print sale ( http://bit.ly/11j46mQ ), but I decided to include an army ant soldier instead. Maybe next time.

I'm a Toronto-based illustrator + fine artist interested in evolutionary biology and metaphors used in science. By day I work for a digital health agency called +INVIVO Communications Inc. doing social media and qa, and blog for Scientific American on the art + science blog, Symbiartic.
I also manage the ScienceArt Circle community on G+ and find myself connecting a lot of artists with people in the sciences. Which is awesome.
